NetNewsWire is the best RSS reader for most Mac users. It is free, open source, native to Apple platforms, supports iCloud and several third-party sync services, and focuses on fast, keyboard-friendly feed reading. Choose Reeder for a more polished unified timeline, lire for full-text and offline reading, Inoreader for monitoring and automation, or Readwise Reader for RSS combined with newsletters, PDFs, and highlights.
The important distinction is that you may be choosing two products: a Mac reading app and an RSS sync backend. Your ideal setup could be a native client connected to iCloud, Feedly, Inoreader, Feedbin, FreshRSS, or Miniflux.

NetNewsWire is the default recommendation because it gets the fundamentals right without requiring a subscription. It is free and open source, has native Mac, iPhone and iPad apps, and the current Mac version lists macOS 15 or newer as its requirement.

It supports direct feed downloading, reader view, article themes, keyboard navigation, sharing, and adding feeds from Safari. For Apple-only users, iCloud may be all the synchronization they need. NetNewsWire also supports Feedbin, Feedly, BazQux, Inoreader, NewsBlur, The Old Reader and FreshRSS.
Choose it if you want a focused RSS reader, quick keyboard-driven triage and a low-cost setup. It is less suitable if you require browser access, Android support, server-side monitoring, complex keyword rules or a large automation platform.
Best polished unified reader: Reeder
The current Reeder is more than a traditional RSS client. Its listing includes RSS, podcasts, videos and social content in a unified timeline. Rather than making unread counts the only organizing principle, it emphasizes your position in the timeline across devices.
That makes Reeder a strong choice for readers who care about design and want different content types in one Apple-native experience. The U.S. listing supports macOS 14 or newer and showed in-app purchases of $1 per month or $10 per year when checked.
Do not confuse this product with Reeder Classic. The current app is not simply a renamed version of the older RSS client, and its subscription model and reading behavior are different.
Reeder versus Reeder Classic
Reeder Classic is a separate application aimed at conventional RSS and read-later workflows. It supports iCloud synchronization and services including Feedbin, Feedly, FeedHQ, NewsBlur, The Old Reader, Inoreader, BazQux and FreshRSS, along with Instapaper and Pocket.
Classic is the better fit if you want familiar unread-based RSS behavior, traditional feed organization and a pay-once-style purchase rather than the current Reeder subscription. Its listings have shown different prices, including $4.99 and $9.99 depending on the platform and listing, so check the exact Mac App Store page in your country before buying.

The current Reeder is preferable for a unified media timeline. Reeder Classic is preferable for a more traditional RSS workflow. They should not be scored as one product.
Best for full-text and offline reading: lire
lire is the specialist choice for readers frustrated by truncated RSS feeds. It attempts to extract the article text from a linked webpage, presents it in the reader, and can cache retrieved full text for offline reading.
It supports standalone use, iCloud, Feedly, Feedbin, FeedHQ, The Old Reader, Inoreader, BazQux, NewsBlur, FreshRSS, Miniflux, Nextcloud News and Tiny Tiny RSS, among other services. Its Mac listing showed $9.99 with in-app purchases when checked.
Full-text extraction is not universal. Paywalls, login requirements, anti-scraping protections, JavaScript-heavy pages, malformed layouts and region restrictions can prevent retrieval. When parsing fails, lire can fall back to opening the original webpage. Treat it as a useful extraction and caching feature, not a guarantee that every partial feed becomes a complete article.

lire also includes newsletter-related workflows, although the exact behavior depends on the service or conversion method being used.
Best for monitoring and automation: Inoreader
Inoreader is the strongest choice when RSS is part of a monitoring system rather than just a reading list. Its official pricing page describes article search, collections, notes, highlights, Google News alerts, website monitoring, Readwise export and Zapier integration. It can monitor sites that do not publish a conventional RSS feed, subject to the relevant plan and feature limits.
Use it for keyword rules, inclusion and exclusion filters, alerts, competitor or topic monitoring, saved searches, and workflows that send articles to other services. A native Mac client such as NetNewsWire or lire can then provide a better desktop reading interface while Inoreader handles the backend work.

The trade-off is complexity and cost. Casual readers following a handful of feeds may find it unnecessarily elaborate. Exact prices, feed limits and feature availability vary by plan and should be checked on the live official pricing page.
Best for beginners: Feedly
Feedly is a straightforward cloud-first option for readers who want to add sources, organize them in folders and access them from a browser. It is easier to use across different computers and platforms than a local-only Mac reader.
Its weakness is that the primary Mac experience is browser-based rather than a dedicated native client. If you prefer Feedly’s backend but want better macOS keyboard behavior, offline handling or Apple integration, connect Feedly to a compatible native client such as NetNewsWire or lire.
Feedly plan limits and prices change, so verify the current official offering rather than relying on an old comparison table.
Best for research and newsletters: Readwise Reader
Readwise Reader is not simply an RSS reader. It combines feeds with saved web articles, email newsletters, Twitter threads, PDFs and EPUBs, then adds highlighting and knowledge-capture workflows.
It is a good fit if reading means collecting source material, annotating it and reviewing it later. It is less attractive for someone who wants to scan hundreds of feed items quickly, keep RSS separate from research documents, avoid cloud storage, or pay once for a simple client.
The U.S. App Store listing showed prices ranging from $8.99 per month on an annual-plan equivalent to $12.99 monthly, with annual options shown between $95.90 and $119.99. Pricing and platform behavior can vary, so confirm the current offer before subscribing. Its App Store privacy disclosure lists categories such as contact information, user content, identifiers, usage data and diagnostics that may be linked to the user; this is a disclosure, not an independent privacy audit.

Native Mac app versus cloud RSS service
A native client and a cloud service solve different problems.
Why choose a native client?
- Better macOS keyboard navigation and menu integration.
- More dependable local reading and offline behavior.
- Reader views, sharing extensions and Apple-platform integration.
- Potentially less dependence on a vendor’s web interface.
- A faster way to triage a large list of articles on a Mac.
Why choose a cloud service?
- Browser access from almost any computer.
- Centralized synchronization across platforms.
- Server-side search, filters, alerts and monitoring.
- Better support for Android, Windows and multi-device households.
- Easier migration between compatible Mac clients.
The most flexible arrangement is often native Mac client plus cloud backend. For example, NetNewsWire or lire can provide the interface while Feedly, Inoreader, Feedbin or FreshRSS stores subscriptions and reading state.
What RSS synchronization actually includes
“Sync” is not one feature. Check which of these an app or service synchronizes:
- Feed subscriptions and folders.
- Read and unread state.
- Stars, saved articles and tags.
- Notes, highlights and annotations.
- Timeline position.
- Downloaded article content and full-text cache.
- Podcast playback position or media progress.
iCloud is convenient for Apple-device synchronization, but it is not equivalent to a full cloud monitoring platform. It does not automatically provide browser access, Android support, server-side keyword rules, website monitoring, team features or extensive alerting.
The current Reeder emphasizes timeline position across devices, while Reeder Classic follows a more traditional RSS model. That difference affects whether you prefer reading by feed and unread count or simply resuming where you stopped.

“Native” does not automatically mean private. The relevant question is where feeds, reading activity and saved content are processed.

- NetNewsWire direct downloads: minimizes dependence on a dedicated RSS vendor, although your chosen sync method still matters.
- iCloud: convenient for Apple users, but still a cloud synchronization path.
- Commercial cloud services: Feedly, Inoreader and Readwise process account and reading data on their infrastructure.
- Self-hosting: FreshRSS or Miniflux can provide more control, but you must handle hosting, HTTPS, updates, backups, feed failures and security.
For the strongest privacy-and-control setup, use NetNewsWire or lire with a self-hosted FreshRSS or Miniflux instance. Self-hosting is not maintenance-free or cost-free in practice.

What to do about partial feeds
When an RSS item contains only a headline and short excerpt, you have several options:
- Open the original article in a browser.
- Use lire’s extraction and caching feature.
- Choose a backend that retrieves article content where supported.
- Use a site-specific full-text tool cautiously.
- Accept the publisher’s feed limit when extraction fails or would be inappropriate.
Extraction can fail on paywalled, login-protected or anti-scraping sites. It can also create bandwidth, publisher-rights and copyright considerations, so do not assume that a full-text feature is universally permitted or reliable.
What if a website has no RSS feed?
First look for an RSS or Atom link in the page source or ask whether the publisher offers an official newsletter. If there is no feed, Inoreader advertises website monitoring and can follow some sites without conventional RSS. Third-party RSS generators are another option, but they can break when a website changes its layout and may be unsuitable for private or account-protected pages.
Monitoring a site is different from subscribing to an official feed: it may produce noisy updates, miss changes or consume a paid plan’s monitoring allowance.
How to choose the right setup
- Want free, native and focused? Choose NetNewsWire with iCloud or direct downloads.
- Want the most polished Apple reading experience? Choose the current Reeder.
- Want traditional RSS with a pay-once orientation? Consider Reeder Classic, after checking its exact listing.
- Want full articles cached for offline reading? Choose lire, with realistic expectations about extraction failures.
- Need rules, alerts, search or website monitoring? Choose Inoreader.
- Want simple browser-based onboarding? Choose Feedly.
- Want RSS, newsletters, PDFs and highlights together? Choose Readwise Reader.
- Want maximum control? Pair NetNewsWire or lire with FreshRSS or Miniflux.
Migration checklist
- Export an OPML file from your current reader. OPML generally carries feed subscriptions, not universal read history, tags, notes or highlights.
- Choose the sync layer: iCloud for an Apple-only setup, a cloud service for cross-platform access, or self-hosting for greater control.
- Import a small selection first and confirm that feeds update correctly.
- Test reading-state synchronization on your Mac and another device before moving everything.
- Test partial feeds, newsletters and podcasts separately. Support varies significantly by app and backend.
- Keep the old reader available until subscriptions and saved material have been checked.
- Export saved articles separately if they matter. OPML is not a universal archive format for reading history or annotations.
Other Mac RSS options
News Explorer, ReadKit and Vienna may also be worth investigating, particularly if their current Mac App Store listings and supported services match your workflow. Feedbin and NewsBlur are additional cloud backends, while FreshRSS and Miniflux are self-hosted alternatives. Check current macOS compatibility, sync behavior and pricing before committing, since smaller products can change more quickly than the major services.
Bottom line
Start with NetNewsWire unless you have a specific reason not to. It offers the best balance of native Mac quality, price, openness and RSS focus. Move to Reeder for a more unified and design-led timeline, lire for full-text offline reading, Inoreader for serious monitoring, or Readwise Reader when RSS is only one part of a broader research workflow.
