There is no source-supported universal winner among residential proxy providers. The right choice depends on the sites you are authorized to collect from, the locations and session behavior you need, your expected bandwidth, and how much retrying, browser rendering, and extraction work you want to run yourself. A 2026 comparison published by Bright Data names Bright Data, Decodo (formerly Smartproxy), Oxylabs, SOAX, IPRoyal, and Webshare as candidates, but its rankings and product descriptions are provider-authored claims—not independent proof of performance. Treat them as a shortlist, then verify current plan terms and test your own permitted workload.
How to choose a residential proxy alternative
Start with the job you need done, not a provider’s advertised pool size or per-gigabyte starting price. A residential proxy supplies an IP address for sending requests; it does not automatically provide browser rendering, reliable extraction, retries, or structured results. Managed scraping products may include some of those tasks, but the scope differs by product.
| Decision | What to establish | Why it changes the choice |
|---|---|---|
| Target and task | Is the site relatively permissive, or does your authorized workflow need to deal with dynamic pages and anti-bot responses? | Different products are positioned for different levels of target difficulty. No proxy type guarantees access or successful collection. |
| Location | Do you need a country, city, carrier, or another level of geographic targeting? | Network reach and targeting controls vary by provider and plan. Confirm the exact locations included before buying. |
| Session behavior | Do requests need rotating addresses, or a persistent address? | Bright Data’s official FAQ distinguishes rotating residential use from ISP IPs for permanent, non-rotating needs. |
| Traffic and billing | Estimate both request and response data; check minimums, trial terms, pay-as-you-go availability, and whether unused traffic expires. | Providers count and package traffic differently. A headline rate alone does not reveal the likely bill or commitment. |
| Operations | Will your team handle retries, browser rendering, CAPTCHA responses, and extraction? | A raw proxy leaves more of this work to you; a managed service may bundle selected functions. |
| Onboarding | Check identity verification, business requirements, and permitted-use policies for the specific product. | Requirements can differ by service type, geography, and provider. |
Match the proxy type to the task
Bright Data’s own documentation presents datacenter IPs as a cost-effective option for mass crawling of less sophisticated targets, ISP IPs for permanent non-rotating needs, and rotating residential IPs for more sophisticated sites. Treat that as one vendor’s selection heuristic, not a promise that a particular network will work on your target. Use only collection methods appropriate to the site, the data, and your authorization.
Compare the whole purchase, not just the per-GB figure
Ask how bandwidth is measured, what volume is included, whether a minimum commitment applies, and whether a trial or pay-as-you-go option is available. Bright Data’s official pricing FAQ says its bandwidth calculation is the sum of data transmitted to and from the target site: request headers, request data such as POST data, response headers, and response data. The FAQ page does not show a publication date in the retrieved material. Other providers may define or package usage differently, so check the current terms for the exact plan.

Bright Data’s FAQ says pay-as-you-go is available for several proxy types and selected scraping tools. Its documentation also says residential and mobile network access can require KYC. Those are Bright Data-specific conditions; do not assume another provider has the same billing or onboarding rules.
Residential proxy alternatives on the 2026 shortlist
The following descriptions reflect the positions in Bright Data’s 2026 provider-authored comparison. They are useful for deciding whom to investigate, but not independent verification of network size, performance, current pricing, or plan eligibility. Confirm product names, locations, terms, and onboarding directly with each provider before committing.
| Provider | Position in Bright Data’s comparison | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Bright Data | Broad toolset, including Web Unlocker, Scraping Browser, Web Scraper API, and SERP API. Bright Data describes Web Unlocker as handling unblocking, CAPTCHA solving, and retries. | Which functions are included in the specific product and plan; pay-as-you-go eligibility; and any KYC requirements for the network you intend to use. |
| Decodo (formerly Smartproxy) | Presented as a budget-oriented all-rounder with residential, datacenter, and ISP options and additional scraping tools. | Current network options, entry price, usage limits, and whether the tools you need are included in the selected plan. |
| Oxylabs | Presented as enterprise-oriented, with a large network and dedicated scraping APIs; the comparison flags higher entry pricing and identity verification. | Current pricing, availability, verification requirements, and whether an API or proxy plan matches your use case. |
| SOAX | Presented as a candidate for granular geographic targeting. The comparison reports a paid trial and no pay-as-you-go option in its snapshot. | Current location granularity, trial conditions, and billing options; these distinctions can change. |
| IPRoyal | Presented as an option for flexible or occasional use, including traffic the comparison says does not expire. | Whether traffic currently expires, which plan the claim applies to, and the terms for any unused balance. |
| Webshare | Presented as self-serve with a free plan and comparatively few built-in scraping tools. | Current free-plan limits and whether the relevant product is residential, datacenter, or ISP. |
The comparison does not normalize plan sizes, eligibility, or feature scope across these companies, and the stated advantages are not independently verified. It does not establish a defensible winner for every target or workload. Treat any vendor-reported network-size or success-rate figure as a claim from that vendor or its comparison, not an independent benchmark of your use case.
When a managed scraping API is a better fit
Choose between proxy access and a managed scraping product based on the work you want to own. With a raw proxy, your application generally remains responsible for making the requests and deciding how to handle failures, browser rendering, and parsing. A managed scraping API may take on some of those steps or return structured data, depending on the product. Bright Data’s Web Unlocker is one example the company describes as handling unblocking, CAPTCHA solving, and retries; the comparison also lists provider scraping APIs and structured-data tools. Feature scope and pricing vary, so compare the actual product rather than assuming every API does the same job.
- A proxy is a more direct fit when you already have a scraper and need a particular kind of egress, location, or session behavior.
- A managed product is worth evaluating when your team would otherwise build and maintain more of the browser, retry, or extraction workflow.
- Compare total cost and engineering effort together: a lower proxy rate may not be the lowest-cost solution if substantial operations work remains with your team.
A practical evaluation before production
- Write down the workload. Identify the target pages, request volume, expected response sizes, required locations, session behavior, and whether pages need browser rendering. Keep the test within your authorization and applicable site rules.
- Shortlist by required controls. Eliminate plans that do not offer the locations, traffic model, session options, or product type you actually need. Ask providers to clarify ambiguous plan terms.
- Run a representative pilot. Use a small set of permitted pages and the same request patterns your production system will use. Record successful loads, failed loads, latency, response completeness, and bandwidth consumed. Do not treat a vendor-wide success-rate claim as a forecast for your target.
- Estimate recurring usage. Include request and response traffic, retries, and any rendering or managed-service charges. Check whether your balance expires and whether overages or minimums apply.
- Confirm operational and onboarding constraints. Verify identity checks, acceptable-use requirements, support expectations, and the current plan’s availability for your intended account and region.
- Recheck before renewal or scale-up. Plan pages, feature bundles, trial sizes, and eligibility are volatile. Reconfirm them rather than relying on a saved comparison snapshot.
Common mistakes and troubleshooting
The proxy connects, but the target still fails
A working proxy connection is not the same as a successful page load or permitted access. The target may return an error, require browser-side behavior, or reject the request for reasons unrelated to the IP. Check the response and your scraper’s handling before concluding that a larger pool or a different provider will solve it. Do not interpret proxy access as permission to collect data.
The billed bandwidth is higher than expected
Compare the provider’s accounting definition with what your client sends and receives. Bright Data, for example, says it counts request headers and data as well as response headers and data. Large responses and repeated attempts can increase measured traffic. Use usage reporting and a representative pilot to estimate costs; do not calculate from payload size alone unless the provider’s terms support that method.
A plan lacks the location or session behavior you need
Check the specific plan’s available locations and controls rather than relying on a provider’s overall network description. If the workflow requires persistent addressing, compare the provider’s relevant non-rotating product with rotating residential access; Bright Data’s FAQ positions ISP IPs for permanent, non-rotating needs. Ask the provider to confirm exact availability for your account.

Signup or access requires additional review
Identity verification and onboarding vary. Bright Data says KYC can apply to its residential and mobile network access. If review requirements affect your launch date, confirm them before basing a production schedule on a trial or advertised self-serve signup.

A CAPTCHA or blocked response appears
Do not assume a residential address guarantees that a page will load, or that a proxy plan includes CAPTCHA handling. Check whether your selected product explicitly includes a relevant managed function, such as the handling Bright Data describes for Web Unlocker. If it does not, evaluate a managed product or revise the workflow only in ways consistent with your authorization and the target’s rules.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. When the need is screenshots, try ScreenshotNeo first
If the goal is a visual screenshot or PDF of a webpage rather than residential network egress or structured data extraction, ScreenshotNeo is the more directly relevant tool to try first: it is a website screenshot API and MCP server for developers, not a residential proxy. A single GET request can return a PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF. It accepts cookie or consent banners like a visitor and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; those steps can each be turned off. Bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and response headers identify the page verdict and billing status.
For an API overview and parameter details, see the ScreenshotNeo documentation. The following examples use the documented API base and a placeholder API key; replace the example target URL as needed.
cURL
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp

A proxy does not make scraping lawful, establish that a site’s terms permit collection, or grant rights to particular data. The answer depends on the jurisdiction, data, site, and project facts; the available provider material does not establish those conclusions. Get appropriate legal advice for jurisdiction- or data-specific questions, and use services only for authorized collection. The provider positions and plan distinctions above are a 2026 snapshot from Bright Data’s comparison and official FAQ, not independent tests or a guarantee of current availability.
Frequently Asked Questions
Should I expect a residential proxy plan to include a browser or structured extraction?
No. Proxy access and managed scraping products are different purchase choices. Check the exact product description and plan inclusions; the word “proxy” alone does not establish browser rendering, retries, or structured output.
Can an advertised success rate tell me whether a provider will work for my target?
Not by itself. A provider-reported figure is not an independent, target-specific benchmark. A representative, permitted pilot is more useful for estimating how your own workload behaves.
