Installation bands and “tested with” versions are WordPress.org directory fields, not independent measures of security, speed, support quality, or compatibility with every theme and plugin.
Which plugin fits your WordPress workflow?
For a shortcode, block, or widget on a normal page
Kaya is the most direct starting point when an editor needs to place a code in a page, post, sidebar, or widget area. Its documented insertion methods cover shortcode, Gutenberg block, and widget use. It supports text and URLs, can use the current page URL automatically, and offers styling, error-correction controls, and downloads. The vendor says its QR library is bundled rather than generated through an external API.
For automatic codes on products and other content
QR Code Composer is designed for sites where editors should not create every code manually. Its directory listing describes automatic generation for pages, posts, WooCommerce products, and custom post types, with URL updates and downloadable output. That makes it a better fit for catalogs, product packaging, event pages, or a large editorial archive than a plugin intended only for an individual shortcode.

For a printed code that must survive a URL change
QR Code Management is the clearest candidate when a redirect is part of the operating model. Its optional shortened URL can redirect to the current permalink at scan time and log access. The plugin’s FAQ explains that, with the redirect enabled, a printed code does not need to be reissued solely because the page URL changed. Without that redirect, the URL embedded in the image remains fixed and a new code is needed after a destination change.
For destination editing as the central requirement
Dynamic QR Code – generator is aimed at the same fundamental problem: changing the scan destination without changing or reprinting the physical code. Treat that description as a starting point, not proof that every redirect, analytics, or access-control behavior you need is included. Confirm where redirects are stored, what happens if the plugin is disabled, and whether limits apply to the free or paid tier.

Static versus dynamic QR codes
Static codes
A static code stores its payload—often a URL, text string, contact details, or event data—inside the image. If the URL changes, the printed image still points to the old address. Static generation is simple and can work well for permanent URLs, downloadable files, Wi-Fi details, or labels that will not be edited.
Redirect-based dynamic codes
A redirect-based code stores a stable URL controlled by the site. The site then sends each scan to the current destination. This can preserve printed materials during a permalink change, campaign refresh, or product-page migration, but it creates an operational dependency: the redirect must remain available for as long as the materials are in circulation.

Before printing, identify who controls the redirect, where it is stored, whether it can be exported or backed up, and what the visitor sees if the plugin is removed. A feature advertised as “dynamic” is not automatically equivalent to unlimited editing, analytics, or a vendor-independent redirect.
Features worth comparing before installation
Placement and automation
- Can editors insert a code with a block, shortcode, or widget?
- Can the plugin generate codes automatically for posts, products, orders, or custom post types?
- Does it provide a front-end generator for visitors, or only an administrator tool?
Destination control and reporting
- Is the code static, redirect-based, or both?
- Can the destination be changed after printing?
- Are scan or access logs included, and are they retained locally?
- Does the plugin distinguish a scan from a page visit, bot request, or repeated request?
Output and design
- Which formats are available—PNG, SVG, EPS, JPEG, or PDF?
- Are logo placement, colors, templates, and bulk exports free or Pro features?
- Can you download a print-resolution asset rather than relying on a front-end image?
Dependencies and maintenance
- Does generation run in the browser or require an external API?
- Which WordPress and PHP versions are supported now?
- When was the plugin last released, and are support questions receiving recent answers?
- Does it coexist with your cache, security, WooCommerce, and page-builder plugins?
How to choose and deploy one safely
- Define the payload. Decide whether you need a URL, text, contact card, event, Wi-Fi details, product link, order link, or a visitor-facing form.
- Decide whether the destination can change. If the code will be printed on packaging, signage, menus, or labels, prefer a redirect workflow only after confirming its ownership and lifetime.
- Map the insertion point. Select a block, shortcode, widget, automatic product field, order screen, or front-end generator based on who creates and maintains the code.
- Check the tier boundary. Read the current directory and plugin page to verify whether redirects, logs, branding, bulk output, WooCommerce support, or integrations are free or Pro.
- Test a complete lifecycle. Scan the code with common phone cameras, change the destination if applicable, confirm the redirect, inspect any log entry, and test the result while logged out and on a mobile connection.
- Preserve a recovery path. Keep the destination URL list and exported images in your normal site backups. For printed campaigns, document the redirect owner and renewal or maintenance responsibility.
Printing and design cautions
Branding can reduce scanning reliability. Do not assume that arbitrary colors, low contrast, dense artwork, or a large central logo will remain readable. Preview the final asset at its intended physical size and test a printed sample with several current phone cameras before ordering a large run. A label printer is an optional accessory for turning exported images or PDFs into physical labels; no special hardware is required to use a WordPress QR plugin.

What the directory numbers do—and do not—tell you
The WordPress.org bands shown in the comparison are approximate snapshots: 10,000+ installations for Kaya QR Code Generator, 5,000+ for Dynamic QR Code – generator, 3,000+ for QR Code Composer, and 2,000+ for Qyrr at the stated access date. They can change and are not audited usage statistics. Likewise, a “tested with” version indicates the directory field at that time, not a guarantee that your theme, PHP version, caching layer, or other plugins will work without conflicts.
