Most PS5 owners did not need an aftermarket cooling fan in 2022. Sony’s first-line advice was to keep the console on a hard surface, leave at least 10 cm of space around it, avoid cramped cabinets and long-fiber carpet, and remove dust from the vents with a low-powered vacuum. A louder fan during some games could also be normal.
That said, a cooling stand could still make sense for organization, controller charging, game storage, or vertical support. The fan itself should be treated as a secondary feature unless a product provides credible, controlled thermal testing. This guide covers accessories aimed at the original 2020 PS5 Disc Edition and Digital Edition sold in 2022—not later Slim or Pro models.

Best overall decision for most owners: improve placement and ventilation before buying a fan. Best reason to buy a cooling stand: you also want charging, storage, or stable vertical support.
Does the PS5 need a cooling fan?
The PS5 already has an integrated cooling system designed to remove heat from its internal components. Warm air from the rear is expected: it means heat is being expelled from the console. Likewise, fan noise alone does not prove that the PS5 is overheating. Sony says the cooling fan may temporarily operate faster during some games and applications, which can make it louder.

Before purchasing an accessory, follow Sony’s documented setup guidance:
- Leave at least 10 cm of free space around each side of the console.
- Use a hard, stable surface rather than carpet or a rug with long fibers.
- Do not place the PS5 in a narrow or cramped space.
- Keep dust from accumulating around the vents.
- Disconnect the AC power cable from the rear before cleaning.
- Use a low-powered vacuum cleaner to remove dust around the vents.
These steps are more important than adding another fan. A PS5 sitting in an open, well-ventilated location generally has little reason to use an aftermarket cooler.
What causes PS5 heat problems?
Heat-related complaints are more likely when the console’s airflow is restricted. Common practical causes include:

- Blocked side or rear vents.
- A narrow television cabinet or enclosed shelving.
- Long-fiber carpet or fabric beneath the console.
- Dust around the vents.
- A hot room, direct sunlight, or another heat source nearby.
- Cable bundles pressed against the rear exhaust.
- A stand or accessory that covers a vent or obstructs a port.
A warm shell or warm exhaust does not, by itself, diagnose a failed internal component. If the console repeatedly shuts down, displays an overheating warning, becomes unusually loud after placement and cleaning are corrected, or behaves erratically, troubleshoot through PlayStation Support rather than masking the symptom with a third-party fan.

PS5 cooling products available in 2022
NexiGo PS5 cooling stand
NexiGo’s cooling-stand products were aimed at buyers who wanted a vertical or horizontal stand with additional organization. The 2022 coverage cited adjustable fan-speed designs and compatibility with both the Disc and Digital editions. Online Tech Tips listed a price signal of approximately $60 in an article dated November 11, 2022; that was not a universal or current price, and retailer stock and promotions varied.
This is a reasonable category for someone who needs a stand and charging or storage features anyway. The limitation is evidence: the cited coverage did not establish a standardized, independent ranking of internal PS5 temperatures. Treat the fan as a convenience feature, not a proven performance upgrade.
OIVO vertical stand with cooling and charging
OIVO products marketed for the PS5 combined a vertical stand, cooling fans, DualSense charging, and game storage. That combination could reduce desk clutter and make the accessory useful even if its cooling effect was modest.
However, multiple fan speeds and dual-controller charging were primarily marketplace or seller claims in the available material. There was no verified independent thermal test showing how much the accessory lowered internal component temperatures. Check the power adapter, charging alignment, port access, stability, and compatibility with the original Disc or Digital console before buying.

KIWIHOME clip-on cooling fan
A compact clip-on fan appealed to buyers who did not want a full stand. Listings highlighted features such as USB power, LED indicators, or USB pass-through. Its small size could be useful in a tight setup, but that does not establish that it improves the PS5’s internal thermals.
Clip-on designs deserve extra scrutiny because their effectiveness depends on alignment with the console’s airflow path. They can add noise, interfere with rear cables, cover part of a vent, or exhaust warm air into a wall. Available evidence was mainly seller or user-generated material rather than controlled independent testing.
Generic cooling stands
Generic stands were widely available and often combined fans, controller docks, LED lighting, and game storage. They could be inexpensive and convenient, but build quality, power supplies, model compatibility, and specifications were inconsistent. Changing brand names and duplicated designs also made product listings difficult to compare.
Do not rank a generic stand by fan count, RPM, LED features, or a “silent” label alone. More fans do not automatically mean better cooling. Airflow direction, pressure, obstructions, noise, and the surrounding cabinet matter more than the number printed on the box.

Cooling stand versus clip-on fan versus cabinet fan
Choose no fan for an open-air setup
If the PS5 is on a hard surface with Sony’s recommended clearance and its vents are clean, buying no cooling fan is the least risky choice. You avoid additional noise, power consumption, cable clutter, and the possibility of obstructing the console’s airflow.
Choose a cooling stand for organization
A stand can be worthwhile for stability, vertical support, controller charging, game storage, or a smaller footprint. Evaluate those benefits directly. Charging convenience and storage are easy to verify; a claimed reduction in internal temperature requires controlled testing.
Choose cabinet airflow for a cabinet problem
If hot air is trapped inside an entertainment unit, attaching a random fan to the PS5 may address the wrong problem. A separately powered USB fan positioned to exhaust hot air from the cabinet can be more rational, provided it does not blow dust toward the console and the cabinet has a practical intake path.
This is an airflow solution for the furniture, not proof that the PS5 itself performs better. The console should still retain adequate clearance and should not be enclosed simply because an external fan is present.

How to evaluate a PS5 cooling accessory
- Check airflow compatibility. Confirm that the stand or clip-on fan does not cover side, bottom, or rear vents. Make sure it does not blow against the PS5’s intended exhaust direction or pull warm air back toward the console.
- Confirm the exact model. The 2022 target was the original PS5 Disc Edition or Digital Edition. Verify orientation, base requirements, and fit rather than trusting a generic “PS5 compatible” label.
- Look for real measurements. The strongest evidence reports ambient temperature, workload, test duration, noise, and a comparison with the console alone. Exhaust-air temperature is not the same as CPU, GPU, memory, SSD, or power-supply temperature.
- Consider noise. Compare fan speeds and listen for tonal whine as well as ordinary airflow noise. More fans can make a setup louder.
- Protect port access. Check whether the accessory uses a USB port, includes a dedicated power adapter, provides pass-through, or makes external storage, headset, and power connections awkward.
- Check stability. The console should sit securely without excessive pressure, slipping, or cable-induced movement. A vertical stand must remain stable while controllers are docked.
- Plan maintenance. The accessory’s own grilles and fans collect dust. Inspect and clean them periodically; a dirty external fan can restrict airflow rather than improve it.
Safe installation and troubleshooting sequence
- Turn off the PS5 completely.
- Install the accessory exactly as directed and confirm that the console is seated correctly.
- Check that no side, bottom, or rear vent is covered.
- Keep at least 10 cm of clearance and ensure the fan is not exhausting directly into a wall.
- Confirm that the power, USB, headset, and external-storage connections remain accessible.
- Listen for unusual rattling, vibration, or a new tonal whine.
- Test the setup during a demanding game.
- Stop using the accessory if the PS5 becomes louder, hotter, unstable, or difficult to connect.
For dust cleaning, disconnect the AC power cable first and follow Sony’s low-powered-vacuum guidance. Do not assume aggressive compressed-air cleaning is Sony-approved simply because it is commonly suggested online.
What cooling-fan reviews often get wrong
Retail listings frequently turn “prevents overheating,” “improves performance,” or “extends lifespan” into product benefits without controlled evidence. Those are marketing claims, not established results. A useful review should distinguish between Sony guidance, a manufacturer specification, a retailer description, a user report, an independent measurement, and editorial judgment.
General airflow testing also shows why fan count is a poor ranking system: additional fans can worsen thermal behavior in some configurations when placement, pressure, or obstructions are unfavorable. The same principle applies to a PS5 accessory. A fan that moves air in the wrong direction—or moves it into a closed cabinet—may be ineffective or counterproductive.
