There is no single best portable scanner for every workflow. The Epson WorkForce ES-60W is the best wireless travel scanner, while the Brother DS-740D is the better choice for two-sided documents. Choose the Brother DS-640 for the lowest verified price, or the Canon imageFORMULA R10 if you need a small feeder for short batches.
Your decision should depend on whether you prioritize wireless operation, duplex scanning, battery power, feeder capacity, or the smallest possible footprint.

What counts as a portable scanner?
A portable scanner is generally a compact, sheet-fed document scanner that fits in a bag or drawer and runs from USB, an internal battery, or both. It is intended for receipts, forms, IDs, invoices, contracts, and ordinary letter- or A4-size documents.

The best portable scanners
Epson WorkForce ES-60W: best wireless portable scanner
The Epson ES-60W is the most versatile true travel scanner in this group. It can operate from USB or its internal battery and scan wirelessly to Windows PCs, Macs, iOS devices, and Android devices according to Epson. It measures 10.7 × 1.9 × 1.4 inches and weighs 0.66 pound.
It supports receipts, IDs, and documents up to 8.5 × 72 inches. Epson lists 600-dpi optical resolution and a rated speed of 15 pages per minute at 300 dpi. Its Epson ScanSmart software and bundled Nuance OCR engine can create searchable PDFs and recognized text.
The limitation: this is a single-sheet scanner, not a batch scanner. It is excellent for a few receipts or forms while traveling, but tedious for a stack of paperwork. Epson’s detailed product page also lists older operating systems, so check the current driver and software support for your exact computer before buying.
Best for: travelers, phone-first users, receipts, and occasional documents.

Brother DS-740D: best portable duplex scanner
The Brother DS-740D is the strongest choice when two-sided scanning matters more than wireless connectivity. Its dual CIS sensors capture both sides in one pass, avoiding the manual flipping and page-order mistakes associated with simplex models.
Brother describes speeds of up to 16 ppm, while its detailed specifications list up to 15 images per minute for duplex scanning. Remember that ppm means pages per minute, whereas ipm means images per minute; a two-sided page contains two images.

Brother DS-640: best budget portable scanner
The DS-640 is the sensible low-cost option for mostly one-sided documents. Brother lists a $134.99 direct price in the supplied research, a speed of up to 16 ppm, USB-powered operation, 600-dpi optical resolution, and support for documents up to 72 inches long.

The trade-offs are straightforward: it is simplex only, USB-only, and requires manual feeding. If you regularly scan contracts or forms printed on both sides, the price difference between the DS-640 and a duplex model may be less important than the time spent turning pages.
Best for: receipts, invoices, forms, and occasional one-sided scanning on a budget.
Canon imageFORMULA R10: best portable scanner for short batches
The Canon R10 is less minimal than the single-sheet models but more productive when you have a small stack. Its feeder holds up to 20 sheets, and it supports automatic or manual feeding, duplex scanning, blank-page skipping, deskew, double-feed detection, background removal, text enhancement, and automatic page-size detection.

Canon rates it at up to 12 ppm simplex or 14 ipm duplex in black-and-white or grayscale, and up to 9 ppm simplex or 10 ipm duplex in color. It has 600-dpi optical resolution, a USB connection, and built-in CaptureOnTouch Lite software. With trays closed, it measures 1.57 × 11.2 × 3.75 inches and weighs 2.20 pounds.

Canon lists a suggested daily volume of 500 scans and provides a one-year limited advanced-exchange warranty. That volume is manufacturer guidance, not an independent endurance test or a guarantee of performance at that workload.
Important compatibility caveat: Canon’s cited product page lists Windows 8.1/10 and macOS 10.13–10.15. Verify current drivers before buying for a newer operating system. The R10 is also USB-only and does not offer the battery or wireless operation of the Epson and Ricoh models.
Best for: users who occasionally scan short stacks and want plug-and-scan software.

Ricoh ScanSnap iX100: best battery-powered specialist
The Ricoh ScanSnap iX100 is built for travelers who value low weight and battery operation. Its internal 3.7 V/720 mAh lithium-ion battery and wireless ScanSnap workflow eliminate the need to keep it tethered to a laptop while scanning.
It weighs 0.88 pound and measures 10.74 × 1.87 × 1.42 inches. The scanner is simplex, has 600-dpi optical resolution, supports long documents up to 8.5 × 34 inches at 300 dpi or below, and can use carrier sheets for photographs and larger folded originals.
The iX100 is not a general-purpose replacement for a duplex office scanner. It has no automatic document feeder or multifeed detection, and it does not support TWAIN or ISIS drivers. Its ScanSnap-specific software is convenient for users already in that ecosystem but potentially restrictive for specialized third-party applications. Ricoh lists Windows 10/11 64-bit and macOS Catalina or later, with limitations for Windows ARM-based PCs.

How to choose a portable scanner
1. Start with your document volume
For a few pages at a time, a single-sheet scanner keeps size and weight down. If you routinely scan a stack, even a 20-sheet feeder makes a meaningful difference. Users processing hundreds of pages or mixed stacks should buy a compact desktop ADF scanner instead; portable models are designed for mobility and occasional work, not maximum throughput.
2. Decide whether duplex scanning is essential
Choose simplex if you mostly scan receipts or one-sided forms. Choose duplex if you frequently handle contracts, school packets, tax forms, insurance documents, or any paperwork printed on both sides. The DS-740D and Canon R10 capture both sides in one pass; the DS-640, ES-60W, and iX100 do not.
3. Separate wireless operation from standalone scanning
Wireless means the scanner can communicate with a phone, tablet, or computer over Wi-Fi. It does not necessarily mean that the scanner can save files without another device or app. The Epson ES-60W and Ricoh iX100 still rely on their software workflows.
USB-only models are usually simpler and can draw power from a laptop, but they require a computer nearby. The Brother models use Micro USB 3.0, which may require an adapter for a USB-C-only laptop.
4. Treat OCR as a workflow feature
OCR turns a scanned image into a searchable PDF or recognized text. Look for searchable PDF creation, Word or Excel export where needed, language support, and whether the feature is included locally or tied to a cloud service.
Brother provides OCR-related software and searchable PDF formats for the DS-640 and DS-740D. Epson includes Epson ScanSmart and a Nuance OCR engine with the ES-60W. Canon includes CaptureOnTouch Lite with the R10. Ricoh includes ScanSnap Home and ABBYY FineReader for ScanSnap, but its proprietary driver approach limits some third-party workflows.

Long receipts can curl, skew, or feed poorly. Flatten curled paper, remove clips and adhesive labels, align narrow receipts carefully, and use a carrier sheet when the model supports one. Epson and Brother list support for documents up to 72 inches; Ricoh lists documents up to 34 inches at 300 dpi or below.

ID cards may be supported, but embossed, rigid, laminated, or unusually thick cards can exceed a scanner’s limits. Check the manufacturer’s thickness specifications before feeding an important card.
6. Do not buy on maximum dpi alone
For ordinary documents, 300 dpi is usually the practical setting. A 600-dpi optical specification can help with tiny text or occasional image work, but feeding reliability, OCR, duplex capability, software, and compatibility matter more for everyday paperwork.
7. Verify current software support
Product pages can retain old operating-system lists. The cited Epson page lists Windows 7/8/10 and older macOS versions, while Canon’s R10 page lists Windows 8.1/10 and macOS 10.13–10.15. Ricoh lists newer Windows and macOS versions but warns about Windows ARM-based PCs.
Before buying, visit the manufacturer’s current driver-download page and check your exact Windows, macOS, Linux, or ARM configuration. USB compatibility alone does not guarantee that scanning software will work.
8. Consider duty-cycle guidance realistically
Brother lists a suggested maximum daily duty cycle of 100 pages for the DS-740D. Canon lists a suggested daily volume of 500 scans for the R10. These are manufacturer figures, not independent reliability tests. If your work regularly approaches those numbers, a desktop scanner with a larger ADF is usually the more appropriate tool.
Can a phone replace a portable scanner?
Often, yes—for occasional or unusual originals. A phone scanning app is better for bound books, pages lying on a desk, artwork, fragile documents, and objects that cannot pass through rollers. It is also the cheapest option.
A dedicated scanner is better for repeatable alignment, consistent lighting, automatic document processing, searchable PDFs, and multipage paperwork. It is also less dependent on holding a phone steady and clearing a suitable surface.
When a desktop scanner is the better purchase
Choose a compact desktop ADF scanner if you regularly scan more than a few dozen pages, process mixed stacks, need reliable batch feeding, or want fewer manual interventions. A portable model is valuable because it travels; it is not automatically a better office scanner.
Similarly, choose a flatbed or overhead document camera for books, fragile photographs, artwork, and irreplaceable originals. Sheet-fed rollers can damage curled, brittle, thermal, or delicate material.
Practical setup and maintenance
- Install the manufacturer’s current software before an important trip and test one searchable PDF.
- Carry the correct cable and, for USB-C-only laptops, a compatible adapter if required.
- Flatten curled receipts and separate pages stuck together.
- Keep paper guides aligned and do not force thick, rigid, or embossed cards.
- Clean rollers and the scanning glass when you see skew, streaks, or repeated feed errors.
- For sensitive medical, financial, legal, or identity documents, check whether OCR or cloud destinations upload files and review account, retention, and sharing settings.
- Use around 300 dpi for ordinary documents unless fine detail requires more; higher resolution creates larger files.
Which portable scanner should you buy?
- Choose the Epson ES-60W if you want the best combination of small size, battery operation, wireless connectivity, and phone support—and you accept single-sheet feeding.
- Choose the Brother DS-740D if two-sided scanning is your priority and you normally work from a laptop.
- Choose the Brother DS-640 if you want the lowest verified price and scan mostly one-sided pages.
- Choose the Canon R10 if a 20-sheet feeder and plug-and-scan software matter more than minimum weight, after confirming current OS support.
- Choose the Ricoh ScanSnap iX100 if battery-powered wireless travel scanning and very low weight matter most, and its ScanSnap-only workflow suits you.
