Best overall for a battery-equipped camper van: EcoFlow WAVE 3. It has the highest stated cooling capacity in this portable shortlist and also heats, but its battery is a separate purchase and a 1,024 Wh battery is not a promise of a full night of maximum cooling. Choose the lighter ZERO BREEZE Mark 3 if portability and a battery-oriented setup matter most, or the BougeRV PC35 PRO if you already own a power station with enough continuous output. For a permanent installation, consider a roof-mounted parking cooler such as Dometic CoolAir RTX instead.
Whichever you choose, a real compressor air conditioner must send its hot exhaust outdoors. Without a sealed exhaust route and enough battery or shore power, even a high-BTU unit can disappoint. The figures below are manufacturer specifications and claims, not independent comparative test results.

Price signals are especially volatile. Search results in August 2026 showed BougeRV PC35 PRO at about $529.99 on promotion (listed at $749.99), PC35 around $299.99–$329.99, and a ZERO BREEZE Mark 3 AC-plus-one-battery bundle at $2,499 (displayed list price $3,498). These are dated promotional observations, not guaranteed current prices; check the live manufacturer page and confirm exactly what the bundle includes. For WAVE 3, compare the total cost of the AC, battery or power station, ducting and installation parts rather than looking at the AC alone.

What counts as a portable air conditioner?
A compressor AC transfers heat out of the cabin and rejects it through an exhaust. That is what the products in the portable shortlist do. A fan moves air but does not remove heat from the van. An evaporative cooler uses water evaporation and can provide relief in dry air, but it is not equivalent to compressor air conditioning—particularly in humid weather, when evaporation is less effective and added moisture may be unwelcome.

“Battery-powered” also needs checking. It may mean a battery is built in, an optional battery is sold separately, or the unit can be run from an external power station. WAVE 3 does not have a built-in battery: EcoFlow lists a separate 1,024 Wh add-on battery. ZERO BREEZE offers battery configurations, so confirm whether the package you are considering includes one. The PC35 and PC35 PRO require an external AC supply or suitable inverter/power station.
Household portable ACs may be less expensive and offer greater output, but they are often heavier and less convenient for off-grid use. They still need exhaust ducting and usually an inverter when powered from a van battery. A roof-mounted 12V/24V parking cooler is a different category: more integrated, but permanently installed.
Why BTU alone does not tell you whether it will cool your van
Cooling depends on the whole heat load: interior volume, insulation, roof and wall exposure, window area and coverings, outdoor temperature, direct sun, humidity, occupants, door openings and how long the AC can run. A compact, shaded, insulated sleeping space is a much easier target than a large van with bare glass parked in the sun. Spot-cooling a bed area may be practical even when lowering the temperature throughout the van is not.
Treat each BTU figure as a manufacturer-stated capacity, not a guarantee of a particular cabin temperature. The makers also publish temperature-drop claims under their own conditions: EcoFlow cites a 15°F drop in 15 minutes, BougeRV an 18°F drop in 15 minutes, and ZERO BREEZE a 20°F reduction in five minutes. The test enclosures, starting conditions, humidity and measurement methods are not established as equivalent, so those claims cannot be used as a fair head-to-head ranking.
Best overall portable option: EcoFlow WAVE 3
WAVE 3 is the most capable all-rounder in this group if you want both cooling and heating and are prepared to build around EcoFlow’s power ecosystem. EcoFlow lists 6,100 BTU cooling, 6,800 BTU heating, a 33.7 lb unit weight and dimensions of 20.4 × 11.7 × 13.2 inches. Rated cooling input is about 640 W on DC and 690 W on AC; noise is listed at 44–58 dB. It uses R290 refrigerant and is rated IPX4. These figures describe the product, not a guarantee that it will cool every van or be quiet at every setting. See the WAVE 3 specifications.

The optional 1,024 Wh LFP add-on battery is listed with a 2–8 hour runtime range. That spread matters: runtime varies with operating conditions and settings, and the upper end should not be read as eight hours of maximum cooling. Heating can make the unit more useful in shoulder seasons, but heat-pump performance depends on outdoor temperature and available power. It is not a substitute for checking the manufacturer’s operating guidance.
- Choose it if: you value the highest stated cooling output among these portable picks, want heating, or already own compatible EcoFlow gear.
- Look elsewhere if: low weight, low total system cost, or long full-power runtime is your priority. The AC weighs 33.7 lb before battery and accessories.
EcoFlow describes an insulated exhaust duct and adaptable installation. Its manual and product guidance should be checked for the configuration you use. In particular, do not confuse powering the AC from a compatible battery/power station with charging a battery: EcoFlow says direct operation from the unit’s charging port is not recommended because of unstable power.
Best lightweight battery-oriented option: ZERO BREEZE Mark 3
At about 22 lb with a claimed 5,280 BTU of cooling, Mark 3 is attractive when the AC needs to be moved, stored, or aimed at a small sleeping zone rather than used as a whole-van system. The manufacturer positions it for vans and small spaces and offers battery configurations. Its stated temperature-setting range is 61–88°F; the product material also lists roughly two hours to charge from 0–80% using its official adapter. Confirm the current model package, battery and charging accessories before buying.
- Choose it if: portability and a battery-focused setup outweigh maximum stated output, particularly for targeted cooling.
- Look elsewhere if: you want the strongest output per dollar or need verified whole-van performance. Its bundle price can be high, and runtime depends on the selected battery and operating mode.
The manufacturer’s 20°F-in-five-minutes cooling statement is a product claim, not a standardized comparison with EcoFlow or BougeRV. Current bundle contents and prices can change; use the official Mark 3 page to verify them.
Best lower-cost option for owners with a power station: BougeRV PC35 PRO
The PC35 PRO combines a 3,500 BTU claim with an inverter compressor and a listed weight of 22.05 lb. Its dimensions are 21.6 × 11.8 × 11.0 inches. BougeRV lists 274 W in sleep mode and describes normal operation as around 400 W, but also recommends a battery or inverter capable of at least 2,000 W continuous output. Those numbers are not interchangeable: a sleep-mode or typical operating figure does not tell you whether the power source can handle startup and sustained operation. The unit uses R290 refrigerant, has a 3.94-inch exhaust-pipe inner diameter and carries a stated two-year warranty. It is a plausible value choice if you already have a suitable power station or inverter; the AC’s promotional price is not the total cost of an off-grid system.

- Look elsewhere if: you expect a small power station or vehicle outlet to run it without checking continuous and surge ratings.
Best budget purchase signal: BougeRV PC35
The standard PC35 also claims 3,500 BTU, but it is a different trade-off from the PRO: it has a fixed-speed compressor and weighs about 34.17 lb, versus 22.05 lb for the PRO. BougeRV lists 563 W in sleep mode, 55 dB noise, 100–120V AC input, an IPX5 rating and a two-year warranty. The IP rating is not permission to operate the appliance exposed to rain or standing water. Confirm the manufacturer’s use and placement instructions.
This can make sense when the initial purchase price matters more than weight or energy use, and the unit will be used where external AC power is available. It is a poor fit for frequent lifting or a battery system where every watt-hour counts. Compare the PC35 listing with the PRO listing carefully: same stated BTU, but not the same compressor, weight or listed power figures.
Permanent alternative: Dometic CoolAir RTX
Dometic’s CoolAir RTX range is a roof-mounted parking-cooler system, not a portable appliance. The range includes 12V and 24V variants, including RTX 1000 and RTX 2000 models. It avoids using floor space and may suit a permanent build, but installation means roof modification and a properly designed high-current electrical system. Dometic’s RTX 2000 manual specifies an 80 A in-line fuse; the exact model and wiring instructions matter. Start with the RTX range information and installation manual, and use qualified installation help if you are not equipped to design and install the circuit.

Approximate runtime (hours) = usable battery Wh × system efficiency ÷ average AC wattsFor an inverter-powered load, an efficiency allowance of 0.85 is a reasonable illustration, not a guarantee. For example:
1,024 Wh × 0.85 ÷ 650 W ≈ 1.3 hours
2,000 Wh × 0.85 ÷ 400 W ≈ 4.25 hours
2,000 Wh × 0.85 ÷ 700 W ≈ 2.4 hoursThese are approximate full-load calculations. Actual runtime can be longer when a compressor cycles or runs below full load, and shorter when the van is very hot, poorly insulated, the inverter loses more energy, or the power station reserves battery capacity or derates due to temperature. Fans and inverter overhead also consume energy. EcoFlow’s stated 2–8 hour range for the WAVE 3 plus its 1,024 Wh battery reflects varied conditions; it should not be collapsed into one guaranteed runtime.
Check the power source, not just the running-watt figure
- Continuous and surge output: Confirm the inverter’s continuous AC rating and startup/surge capability against the AC maker’s requirements. A high “peak” number is not a substitute for sufficient continuous output.
- AC versus DC: AC portable units need an inverter when fed by a DC house battery. A direct-DC unit can avoid that conversion loss, but still draws substantial current and needs correctly sized wiring and protection.
- 12V current: A 500 W load at 12V is over 40 A before conversion losses. Do not assume a cigarette-lighter/accessory outlet can power a 400–700 W AC. Follow the vehicle circuit rating and use a properly fused, sized installation.
- Charging: Solar can extend daytime runtime, but roof area, shade and weather limit production; it may not keep pace with an AC’s average load. Solar is unavailable overnight. Alternator charging can help while driving, but do not connect a large load to an undersized vehicle circuit or assume an alternator can support any charging setup.
- Temperature and configuration: Hot batteries or power stations may reduce output or shut down. Check the manufacturer’s permitted charging/discharging arrangement, especially if attempting to charge a battery while powering the AC.
Plan the exhaust, drain and placement
The exhaust hose is essential, not an optional accessory. The AC removes heat from the cabin and must discharge that heat outside; if hot exhaust returns through a gap or the hose is left in the van, cooling can be poor and the cabin may get hotter overall.
- Pick the outlet first. Decide whether the hose will exit through a window insert, door insert, roof vent or custom bulkhead. A house window panel may not fit a van opening; measure the opening and confirm hose diameter and adapter compatibility. The PC35 PRO lists a 3.94-inch exhaust-pipe inner diameter.
- Keep the route short and sealed. Use the intended ducting, limit bends and length where possible, seal around the opening, and prevent hot exhaust from reaching the unit’s intake. Follow the AC maker’s clearance guidance.
- Manage condensation. Humid conditions can produce more condensate. Do not assume a “no drain” or evaporation feature eliminates water under all conditions. Check the selected model’s manual, keep any drain outlet clear, and route an approved hose to a secure container or outside when required. A van parked on a slope can spill a container or cause drainage problems, so keep the unit level and inspect for leaks.
- Secure it for travel. A portable AC, battery, drain container and duct parts all need safe storage. Restrain the unit before driving; do not block exits, ventilation or vehicle controls. Remove or secure loose ducting and accessories.
Leave clearance around the appliance, account for the space taken by hoses and adapters, and test the installation while parked before relying on it overnight.
Make a small AC work better
- Park in shade when possible, and use reflective covers or thermal curtains on sun-facing glass.
- Pre-cool the van before the hottest part of the day or before bed, when power is available.
- Close off unused areas and focus cooling on the sleeping or living zone you actually occupy.
- Improve insulation and seal obvious air leaks; keep doors closed while cooling.
- Keep the exhaust short, sealed and separated from the intake. A badly routed duct can cancel out useful cooling.
- Use a small fan to distribute cool air rather than expecting the AC’s outlet alone to cool every corner.
- Check filters and condensate paths regularly, especially after dusty travel or humid use.
Noise, sleep and the complete system
EcoFlow lists WAVE 3 at 44–58 dB, while BougeRV lists the PC35 at 55 dB. These figures may not have been measured at identical fan settings or under identical conditions, so they do not establish which is quieter in a van. Compressor cycling, fan speed, duct vibration, the floor or cabinet transmitting vibration, and the power station’s own cooling fan all affect sleep comfort. Try a sleep or low mode, pre-cool before bed, use a vibration-isolating mat, and secure the duct so it cannot rattle. Place a power station away from the bed only where it remains safely ventilated, dry and within its operating limits.
Compare total system weight and cost: add-on batteries, power stations, inverters, ducting, adapters, drain containers, restraints and mounting hardware can outweigh or cost substantially more than the AC unit itself. Also check warranty service, replacement parts, installation support and the complete bundle contents before purchase.
