Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Short answer: the strongest currently documented choices are WP Popular Posts, MonsterInsights, WebberZone Top 10, and Jetpack. They differ mainly in how they measure popularity, where they can display recommendations, and which features require a paid plan. The available documentation supports four options—not five—so this guide does not add a weakly verified fifth plugin.
How to choose a popular-posts plugin
“Popular” can mean recent page views recorded by a plugin, Google Analytics data, statistics already collected by a broader suite, comments, or a manually selected list. Choose the measurement method first; a beautifully styled widget is not useful if its ranking data does not match your editorial goal.
- Ranking source: confirm whether the plugin tracks views itself, reads Google Analytics, uses suite statistics, or relies on manual selection.
- Placement: check for the exact locations you need—sidebar widgets, blocks, inline posts, shortcodes, templates, or a page-builder element.
- Compatibility: verify the current WordPress and PHP requirements, then check whether caching, firewalls, REST API restrictions, or analytics connections affect tracking.
- Feature gates: separate what works in the free plugin from Pro or commercial tiers.
- Performance: test on your own site. The available material contains no comparable benchmark, so it cannot establish a speed winner.
At-a-glance comparison
| Plugin | How popularity is measured | Documented placements | Free and paid notes | Compatibility/setup evidence |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| WP Popular Posts | Its own popular-post tracking | Block, shortcode, template tag, Elementor widget | Core plugin listing documents the feature set; paid tier information was not established | WordPress 6.2+ and PHP 7.4+; caching, REST API access and the theme’s wp_head() hook can affect setup |
| MonsterInsights | Google Analytics 4 data; recommendations described for the previous 30 days | Inline posts, sidebar/widget placement, product recommendations and pre-built templates | Vendor comparison reports a free version and “From $99.50/year” as of its March 7, 2026 update; verify the current plans | Requires a working Google Analytics connection through MonsterInsights |
| WebberZone Top 10 | Plugin tracking and query tools documented in its WordPress.org listing | Use the current listing to confirm the placement and display options you need | Some enhancements are marked Pro; exact current pricing was not established | Active development is documented; version 4.5.1 is dated September 19, 2026. Check the live listing for supported versions |
| Jetpack | Jetpack Stats and its discovery of top-performing posts and pages | Use Jetpack’s current Stats/discovery controls and placement documentation | The comparison source says popular-post functionality is available in the free version; confirm availability in your account | Best suited to sites already using Jetpack and its connected Stats service |
1. WP Popular Posts: the dedicated, flexible choice
WP Popular Posts is purpose-built for ranking content rather than being an add-on to an analytics suite. Its official listing documents four ways to display a list:
- a WordPress block;
- the
wpp_get_mostpopular()template tag; - a shortcode; and
- an Elementor widget.
The listing requires WordPress 6.2 or newer and PHP 7.4 or newer (accessed September 30, 2026). That makes it a practical fit when you want the same ranking engine available in both editor content and theme code.

Setup checks that matter
Before troubleshooting the widget itself, check the site infrastructure. Aggressive page or object caching can interfere with view counting. Security and firewall tools must allow the REST API requests the plugin uses, and the active theme needs to call wp_head(). If counts remain zero or lists never change, temporarily review those three areas and your cache purge rules.
Choose it when
Use WP Popular Posts when you want a dedicated tracker, several insertion methods, and control over a sidebar, article, template, or Elementor layout without adopting a full analytics suite.
2. MonsterInsights: analytics-based recommendations
MonsterInsights’ vendor comparison describes popular-content recommendations powered by Google Analytics 4, using the previous 30 days of data. It also lists inline recommendations, a sidebar/widget location, product recommendations, and pre-built templates.
Important cost qualification
The same vendor comparison, updated March 7, 2026, reports a free version and plans “From $99.50/year.” Those are vendor claims and prices can change, so confirm the current plan page before committing. Do not assume every recommendation template or placement is included in the free edition.

MonsterInsights is most coherent for a site that already treats GA4 as its reporting source and wants recommendations aligned with that measurement rather than a second, independent view counter.
3. WebberZone Top 10: an actively maintained alternative
WebberZone Top 10 is listed on WordPress.org as actively developed. Its 4.5.1 changelog is dated September 19, 2026 and records recent tracking, query, dashboard, and security fixes. The listing also marks some enhancements as Pro.

What to verify before installation
Because placement options, supported WordPress versions, and Pro boundaries can change, use the live WordPress.org listing to confirm those details for your site before installing. Treat the September 19 version date as release metadata, not a guarantee that it is the newest version when you read this.
Choose it when
Consider Top 10 when you want a dedicated popular-content system with visible ongoing maintenance and are comfortable checking which advanced controls belong to Pro.

4. Jetpack: convenient for existing Jetpack users
Jetpack Stats includes discovery of top-performing posts and pages. The comparison source says popular-post functionality is available in the free version. Availability and the exact setup flow can vary with Jetpack’s current modules and account connection, so confirm the control in your dashboard.
Rank #4
Choose it when
Jetpack is the least disruptive option if your site already uses Jetpack Stats and you want popular-content discovery without adding a separate tracking plugin. Installing Jetpack solely for this feature may add services you do not otherwise need.
How to add a popular-posts widget to a WordPress sidebar
- Install and activate the plugin you selected.
- Open Appearance → Widgets (or Appearance → Editor for a block theme).
- Add the plugin’s documented widget or block to the Sidebar template part.
- Choose the ranking period, number of posts, thumbnail or excerpt settings, and any category filters exposed by that plugin.
- Save, clear relevant caches, and visit several posts in a private browser session so tracking has data to rank.
- Check the front end and the plugin’s dashboard after the plugin’s documented collection interval; a brand-new site may not have enough views for meaningful ordering.
If your plugin offers only a shortcode, place that shortcode in a Shortcode block inside the sidebar. If it provides a template tag, add it to the appropriate theme template only if you are comfortable maintaining PHP changes.

They can add tracking requests, database queries, analytics calls, or front-end assets, but the effect depends on the plugin, configuration, cache layer, traffic pattern, and hosting stack. No comparable benchmark is established for these four products, so choosing a speed winner would be unsupported.

A practical test
- Record a baseline on a representative page with the widget disabled.
- Enable one plugin and the exact display configuration you plan to use.
- Test logged-out pages on mobile and desktop, including a cold-cache visit.
- Watch server response time, page-weight changes, database-query warnings, and tracking accuracy.
- Repeat after enabling your production cache and firewall rules.
Keep the configuration that provides useful rankings without an unacceptable change in your own measurements.
Which is the best free option?
There is no universal winner. WP Popular Posts offers a dedicated free plugin with four documented insertion methods and clear minimum requirements. Jetpack may be the simplest free route when Jetpack Stats is already active. MonsterInsights’ vendor comparison reports a free version, but its more advanced recommendation features may be plan-dependent. Top 10’s listing identifies some enhancements as Pro.
Why this guide lists four plugins, not five
The available current documentation substantiates these four candidates but does not establish a fifth plugin’s popular-post function, compatibility, and feature boundaries well enough to recommend it responsibly. WordPress.org’s popular tag is useful for discovering alternatives, but directory install counts and tested-version labels are live metadata, not proof of quality. For context, WP Popular Posts showed 100,000+ active installations when the directory was accessed on September 30, 2026.
The Bottom Line
Start with WP Popular Posts for a dedicated, placement-flexible tracker; choose MonsterInsights when GA4 should drive the rankings; consider Top 10 for an actively maintained alternative; and use Jetpack when its Stats ecosystem is already part of your site. Verify current compatibility, plan limits, and your own performance measurements before launch.
