The best place to hire a WordPress developer depends on the work and how much candidate screening you can take on. For WordPress-focused freelance help with specialist screening, consider Codeable; for broader choice, look at Upwork or Fiverr and plan to vet applicants yourself. Toptal is a screened, broader talent network, while WordPress Jobs and referrals support direct hiring. For complex projects that need several disciplines, compare agencies or managed teams.
Where can you hire a WordPress developer?
These options differ mainly in who finds and evaluates candidates, the breadth of the talent pool, and whether you are hiring one freelancer or a delivery team. Platform descriptions below are largely vendor-authored, so treat claims about screening and matching as the companies’ own positioning—not proof of better project outcomes.
| Hiring route | Best fit | Main trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Codeable | WordPress-specific freelance work when specialist screening and matching are useful. Codeable says it focuses exclusively on WordPress, screens developers, matches clients with experts, and provides one estimate. Codeable’s hiring guide | Premium positioning and less open browsing than a general marketplace. Its screening and matching descriptions are vendor claims. |
| Upwork | Flexible scopes and broad talent choice, especially if you can compare proposals and interview candidates. | You do more of the work of reviewing portfolios, proposals, and fit; fees and terms may change. Codeable’s comparison describes it as an open marketplace. |
| Fiverr | Discrete tasks with clear deliverables and acceptance criteria. | Quality and fit can vary, so define the scope precisely and review completed work. Codeable’s guide describes task-level options and cautions about variability. Codeable’s guide |
| Toptal | Buyers seeking a screened, broader freelance talent network and matching help. Toptal offers WordPress talent and hiring resources. Toptal’s WordPress hiring page | A broad technical screen does not replace checking WordPress-specific portfolio fit; its screening and matching claims are first-party. |
| WordPress Jobs | Direct hiring and reaching candidates connected to the WordPress community. | You handle applicant screening and the hiring workflow. Codeable’s guide identifies the board as an official community resource. Codeable’s guide |
| Agencies or managed teams | Complex builds requiring several roles, delivery management, or continuity beyond one freelancer. | Evaluate the agency’s relevant track record, who owns the work, and how handoff and ongoing support will work. Investigate firms individually; a general guide cannot establish their quality. Codeable’s hiring guide |
| Referrals and community channels | Finding a candidate through a trusted contact or visible community participation. | A referral is a lead, not a substitute for technical due diligence. Review work, references, and fit as you would for any candidate. |
Which hiring route fits your project?
Small, clearly defined fixes
For a discrete change with an objective way to check completion, Fiverr or an open marketplace may offer useful choice. Write acceptance criteria before hiring—for example, specify the affected page or feature, expected behavior, and how you will verify the change. The more precisely you can define the task, the easier it is to compare bids and judge delivery.
Custom themes, plugins, or technical engineering
Custom architecture and development call for evidence of similar work, not just familiarity with the WordPress dashboard. Toptal’s hiring guide distinguishes site managers working with existing themes and plugins from engineers building custom solutions, and recommends matching seniority to complexity and leadership needs. Toptal’s hiring resources can help clarify the role; still assess candidates against your own stack and brief.

Performance, security, maintenance, or ongoing support
These projects need a clear account of what is included and how work will be managed over time. Ask candidates to explain the relevant approach for your site, such as staging, backups, updates, security checks, or plugin-conflict diagnosis. For ongoing work, establish response expectations, responsibilities, and how changes outside the agreed scope will be handled.
Multi-discipline builds
If the project needs design, development, quality assurance, and coordinated delivery, an agency or managed team may fit better than a single freelancer. Compare who will actually do the work, who manages delivery, how decisions and approvals flow, and what documentation and handoff you receive.

How to choose and vet a WordPress developer
- Write a short brief. Describe what is broken or being built, what “done” means, your deadline, and any maintenance expectations. Name the relevant stack, including WooCommerce and specific plugins when applicable, and set out access or security constraints.
- Choose the role you need. Decide whether the job calls for an implementer handling a known task, an engineer solving a custom problem, or a team with design, QA, or project-management coverage. Match seniority to the complexity and leadership required.
- Pick a route that matches your capacity to screen. A specialist or screened network can reduce initial comparison work, though it cannot establish fit by itself. Open marketplaces provide broader choice but require you to assess candidates. Direct job-board and referral routes suit employers ready to manage the hiring process; agencies suit projects needing multiple skills or team continuity.
- Check relevant evidence. Inspect comparable live work, ask what the candidate personally delivered, and contact references where appropriate. Discuss project-specific skills rather than relying on a profile badge or general screening claim.
- Test the working relationship. Ask how the developer will approach the brief and communicate progress. Cover updates, staging, backups, security, accessibility, performance, and plugin conflicts where they matter to the project.
- Agree on delivery and ownership. Set milestones and acceptance tests, confirm ownership of code and credentials, and document how scope changes will be proposed and approved.
How much does it cost to hire a WordPress developer?
There is no neutral market-wide WordPress rate established by the sources cited here. One vendor-authored Codeable comparison, with its pricing table last updated July 2026, lists a 17.5% service fee and recommends an $80–$120 hourly-rate basis. Those are Codeable-published figures, not a market-wide rate; verify current terms directly before hiring. Codeable’s comparison and pricing information
Compare the complete engagement rather than an hourly number alone: whether billing is hourly or based on an estimate, what the platform fee covers, whether the work is one-off or ongoing, and how much time you will spend screening and managing it. Confirm deliverables, exclusions, and change terms before work starts.

What platform screening figures do—and do not—tell you
Codeable’s vendor-published comparison reports a 2.2% acceptance rate and a six-step selection process. It also reports Toptal’s claim that fewer than 3% of roughly 200,000 annual applicants are accepted. These are platform-reported screening figures, not independent measures of WordPress-specific ability or project success. Codeable’s comparison
Use screening as one input, then assess the person against your actual requirements: relevant work, technical judgment, communication, references, and a workable delivery plan. No platform can make those project-specific checks unnecessary.
