For most iPhone and iPad owners, the Canon SELPHY CP1500 is the best all-round photo printer: it makes conventional 4×6-inch prints and supports AirPrint, Wi‑Fi, USB and memory cards. If you want pocketable stickers or the distinctive look of instant film, a smaller printer may suit you better. The key choice is not simply which printer is “best,” but whether you want album-size photos, adhesive mini prints or instant-film keepsakes.

Simple decision: choose the CP1500 if you want regular photographs you can put in an album or frame. Choose Instax if the film look is the point. The Canon SELPHY CP1500 is the most versatile pick for people who want real 4×6-inch photos rather than pocket-size stickers. It supports Wi‑Fi, USB, memory cards and Apple AirPrint, and Canon lists both Canon PRINT Inkjet/SELPHY and SELPHY Photo Layout as app options. Canon’s U.S. list-price signal was $179.99, with a $159.99 promotional price observed August 18, 2026; treat those as time-sensitive, not guaranteed current prices.
AirPrint is its key iPhone and iPad convenience. When the printer and Apple device are on the same Wi‑Fi network, you can print through the standard Photos share menu instead of relying exclusively on a maker’s app. The printer is still a compact home device rather than a pocket printer: choose it for prints, not for slipping into a small bag for spontaneous outings.
Print from Photos with AirPrint
- Connect the CP1500 and your iPhone or iPad to the same Wi‑Fi network.
- Open Photos, select an image and tap Share.
- Tap Print, select the CP1500, and choose the paper size and number of copies.
- Check the preview and crop before tapping Print.
Canon’s AirPrint information is on its CP1500 product page. Paper and ink are consumables: check the current price and sheet count for the compatible RP-series set on Canon’s page before comparing ownership costs.
Best portable dye-sub sticker printer: Canon SELPHY QX20
The SELPHY QX20 is for a different job from the CP1500. It prints on adhesive-backed media in either 2.7×2.7-inch square or 2.1×3.4-inch card format. It uses dye-sublimation, has a built-in battery and charges over USB‑C. Canon specifies an approximately 40-second print time. Its USB‑C port is for charging, not a general wired-printing connection.
There is an important buying caveat: Canon’s U.S. page displayed a $189.99 price signal but also showed out-of-stock or discontinued language in the August 18, 2026 research snapshot. Do not assume it is currently available; confirm stock and compatible media before choosing it. Canon listed XC‑20L 20-sheet media at $16.99 and XC‑60L 60-sheet media at $46.99 in that snapshot—about 85 cents or 78 cents per sheet, respectively, before tax and shipping. Prices can change.

The QX20 requires Canon’s SELPHY Photo Layout version 4.0 or later; it does not offer the CP1500’s regular AirPrint workflow. Canon specifies a direct 2.4-GHz Wi‑Fi connection. You select an image in the app, choose the media format, adjust the crop and print. The built-in battery makes it more portable than the CP1500, but Canon says a power adapter is not included.
Canon advertises up to 100-year image longevity for the QX20 under specified storage conditions. This is a manufacturer claim based on controlled testing, not a universal guarantee: image, storage, environment and display conditions affect actual results.

Best for instant-film character: Fujifilm instax mini Link 3
The instax mini Link 3 suits people who want the physical character of an Instax photograph: a border, a small image area and a film rendering rather than a digitally neutral 4×6 print. Fujifilm specifies iOS and Android app support for the Mini Link family and approximately 12 seconds for image output in its Mini Link specifications. Film is purchased separately; it is not an ink-cartridge system.
Mini film has an image area of about 1.8×2.4 inches on film measuring about 2.1×3.4 inches. The border and writing area mean the photograph itself is smaller than the sheet. This is a fun format for parties, gifts, travel and memory keeping, but it is not a substitute for a conventional album-size print. Use the companion app to select and crop a photo, and confirm the current app listing supports your iPad model and iPadOS version.
Film format is model-specific: Mini, Square and WIDE film are not interchangeable. Confirm the exact printer model before buying film. Best larger instant-film format: Fujifilm instax Link WIDE
If Mini prints feel too small but you want the Instax look, consider the instax Link WIDE. It uses WIDE film and provides instax-Natural and instax-Rich image modes. Fujifilm supports printing from iOS and Android through the companion app. The larger format is useful for group photos and keepsakes; the printer and film packs take more room than Mini-format products.

Choose Link WIDE for its format and aesthetic, not as a claim of greater digital accuracy. Review the app preview and crop carefully, and buy film specifically marked WIDE for this printer. Check the current regional product information for exact outside and image-area dimensions and current U.S. pricing.
Best small ZINK alternative: HP Sprocket 200
The HP Sprocket 200 makes 2×3-inch prints on HP ZINK sticky-backed paper, with iOS and Android app support. Its main appeal is portability and easy use in journals, scrapbooks and crafts. It is a small-print option, not a competitor to the CP1500 for 4×6 photos or frame-ready output. Use the Sprocket app workflow and do not assume printing directly from the standard iPhone Photos share menu is supported.
Check the current paper pack price and sheet count before buying. ZINK avoids a separate ink cartridge, but the special paper is still a recurring proprietary-media cost.

Outside sheet dimensions are not always image dimensions. Borders, writing areas and cropping reduce the space occupied by the photograph. For WIDE format, consult the current regional specification for exact measurements.
iPad compatibility: check more than “iOS supported”
iPhone and iPad printing are not automatically identical. A printer may support AirPrint, use an app that runs on iPad, or require a specific app and a direct connection. An iOS-compatible app may still have a phone-sized interface on iPad. Before buying, check the current App Store listing and confirm:

For dye-sub, a pack may include both paper and the matching ink cassette. For Instax and ZINK, film or special paper is the recurring expense. A misprint or failed feed may also use a sheet, so the calculated figure is a baseline, not a promise of the exact cost of every successful photo.

Get better prints from iPhone and iPad photos
- Preview the crop. A photo’s aspect ratio may not match the paper. Small fixed-format prints can cut off edges; keep faces and important details away from the frame.
- Leave breathing room. Avoid placing a face or text right at the edge, particularly on sticker and instant-film sizes.
- Start with a well-lit original. Dark phone photos can lose shadow detail on a small print. Review the app’s brightness and crop controls rather than assuming the printer will correct every image.
- Test before a batch. Print one image before committing a larger pack, especially when using a new crop, layout or paper format.
- Match the media exactly. Confirm the printer model and format on the package. Instax Mini, Square and WIDE are distinct formats; QX20 square and card-size media are also different choices.
Troubleshooting common problems
The CP1500 does not appear in the Print menu
Check that the printer and Apple device are on the same Wi‑Fi network; a guest network may prevent devices from seeing one another. Restart both, then try Canon PRINT Inkjet/SELPHY or SELPHY Photo Layout. If needed, review the router’s band and device-isolation settings; network behavior varies, so this is a troubleshooting check rather than a guaranteed fix.
The QX20 or another app-based printer cannot connect
Confirm the correct companion app is installed and has permission to access Photos. Follow the in-app pairing flow rather than assuming AirPrint will find it. For QX20, Canon specifies direct 2.4-GHz Wi‑Fi and SELPHY Photo Layout 4.0 or later.

Return to the app’s crop preview, reposition the image and leave more margin around important subjects. A photo’s original aspect ratio may differ from the paper’s fixed shape.
The print looks darker or more saturated than the phone screen
A lit phone display and a physical print are different viewing conditions, and small-print systems process color differently. Check the original image and app adjustments, avoid judging only by a bright screen, and make a single test print before printing a batch. Do not assume that changing printers will produce a universal color match.
The paper or film will not feed
Check the media package for the exact model and format, reload it in the orientation shown by the manufacturer, and avoid mixing incompatible sizes. If the printer reports an error, follow its product instructions before trying another sheet.
