There is no single best payment gateway. Stripe is the strongest starting point for most online businesses and developers; Square is usually the better fit for retail, restaurants and simple omnichannel selling; Adyen suits high-volume global merchants; and Helcim is worth pricing when interchange-plus economics may beat flat rates. PayPal, Braintree and Authorize.net fill more specific wallet, app and traditional-gateway needs.

Prices and features in this comparison were checked August 16, 2026. They are current figures, not historical 2025 prices. U.S. pricing is assumed unless noted; country, industry, volume, card mix and approval status can change the result.

Quick recommendations

Business profile Start with Reason
Developer, SaaS or custom ecommerce Stripe Flexible APIs, Checkout, subscriptions, marketplaces and broad payment-method support.
Retail, restaurant or mobile seller Square Integrated POS, hardware, inventory, invoices and online payments.
Global enterprise or marketplace Adyen Local payment methods, acquiring and unified commerce at substantial volume.
High-volume SMB comparing interchange-plus Helcim Published volume-based markup over interchange.
Wallet-focused checkout PayPal Recognizable consumer wallet that can be added alongside a card processor.
App or marketplace developer Braintree or Stripe Developer tools, cards, wallets and platform-payment capabilities.
Traditional merchant-account buyer Authorize.net Established gateway model and recurring-billing support.

What a payment gateway actually does

A payment gateway is the checkout and authorization layer that securely sends payment details for approval. The processor or acquirer routes the transaction through card networks and settles funds. A payment facilitator such as Stripe or Square onboards businesses under its platform structure, while a traditional setup may use a separate merchant account. A merchant of record can go further by taking responsibility for collection, tax, fraud, refunds and compliance.

How to define “best”

Compare the cost and operational fit for your business, not a headline percentage. Check:

  • Percentage and fixed fees at your average order value.
  • International-card and currency-conversion charges.
  • ACH or bank-debit pricing, refunds and chargeback fees.
  • Payment methods, subscriptions, invoices and customer portals.
  • POS, hardware, offline operation and omnichannel reporting.
  • Marketplace onboarding, split payments and third-party payouts.
  • Fraud screening, 3-D Secure, dispute evidence and liability.
  • Payout timing, reserves, account reviews and business restrictions.
  • API, hosted-checkout, plugin and webhook quality.
  • Reconciliation, exports, migration and customer support.

Effective-cost examples

For a $50 domestic online card payment, Stripe’s published standard rate calculates as ($50 × 2.9%) + $0.30 = $1.75. Square’s displayed 2.9% + $0.30 rate produces the same arithmetic. On a $10 order, the $0.30 fixed fee is 3% before the percentage fee; on a $500 order it is only 0.06%. A provider with a lower percentage can therefore cost more for small tickets.

Provider reviews

Stripe: best general-purpose online and developer gateway

Stripe combines hosted Checkout, Elements, Payment Links, Billing, Connect, Radar and Terminal. It is particularly strong for subscriptions, usage billing, marketplaces and custom customer journeys. The trade-off is implementation work: webhooks, reconciliation, tax, fraud rules and account-level risk reviews remain important. A test-mode payment does not prove live underwriting, payout eligibility or reserve terms.

Use it when: you need APIs, recurring billing, broad methods or platform payments. Look elsewhere first when: you want a POS-first operation with minimal technical involvement.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Square: best POS-first omnichannel option

Square unifies card acceptance, POS, inventory, staff permissions, invoices, hardware and online selling. Its sandbox lets developers test application workflows. Channel-specific rates, software plans, hardware and instant transfers change the total cost, and it is less suited to complex global acquiring or sophisticated marketplace architecture.

  • Working status: Blue LED light indicator, the indicator LED lights up when powered on, the device status is clearly visible.
  • In the Box: SmartQ C368 USB 3.0 Card Reader (memory card not included), Cable organizer, User manual.

Adyen: best for global and enterprise scale

Adyen’s single integration can cover multiple payment methods, local acquiring and settlement options. Its fixed processing fee plus method fee and lack of setup or monthly fee can be attractive at scale, but interchange, scheme fees, risk products and commercial terms determine the real quote. Enterprise onboarding and implementation are usually excessive for a small merchant. Use the documented test environment for authorization failures, redirects and 3-D Secure; production approval is separate.

Helcim: transparent interchange-plus alternative

Helcim publishes online and in-person markups by monthly volume. That transparency helps established SMBs model costs, but interchange is still variable and flat-rate providers may be more predictable for small merchants. Confirm countries, payment methods, integrations, reserves and industry eligibility before switching.

PayPal: useful additional wallet

PayPal can add a familiar wallet to a checkout, but PayPal Checkout, invoicing, Braintree and other products have different pricing and risk rules. Treat holds, reserves, disputes and acceptable-use restrictions as selection criteria. It is often best added beside a primary card processor rather than assumed to be the only processor.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Braintree: developer-oriented PayPal-family platform

Braintree supports cards, third-party wallets and PayPal through developer tools. Its published U.S. standard rate is 2.89% + $0.29, with listed non-USD, international-card and $15 chargeback fees. Confirm current country availability, vaulting, onboarding and marketplace features. It is not a Square-style turnkey POS.

What a useful demo should test

“Demo” may mean a sales presentation, product tour, no-code payment link, sandbox or live trial. A successful card payment alone proves very little. Reproduce these flows in a documented test environment:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Stripe: create a test product or Payment Link, open hosted Checkout, complete a test card payment, inspect the dashboard, trigger a decline, then test refund and webhook handling using Stripe’s documentation.
  2. Square: create a sandbox application, generate a test payment, compare online API and invoice workflows, issue a refund and verify reporting in the Sandbox.
  3. Adyen: select a method, create a test payment, simulate authorization failure, exercise redirect or 3-D Secure and inspect the test Customer Area using the testing guide.
  4. PayPal: create sandbox buyer and seller accounts, test approval, cancellation and refund, and keep wallet behavior separate from card-processing behavior using PayPal’s sandbox guide.

Common mistakes and operational risks

  • Comparing online and card-present rates as if they were equivalent.
  • Ignoring fixed fees on low-value orders or FX on international sales.
  • Assuming interchange-plus is always cheapest.
  • Confusing payment-method support with merchant-country support.
  • Assuming sandbox success guarantees production approval or payout speed.
  • Failing to test declines, duplicate requests, delayed webhooks, partial refunds, 3-D Secure and abandoned checkouts.
  • Overlooking prohibited industries, reserves, holds and dispute-evidence requirements.
  • Relying on one provider without a continuity plan.
  • Not exporting customers, transactions, subscriptions and refunds before migration.
  • Choosing a gateway because an affiliate ranking calls it “best.”

How to make the final decision

  1. Record your country, currencies, monthly volume, average order, card mix, channels and industry.
  2. Shortlist two or three providers using the business-model recommendations above.
  3. Calculate effective cost at $10, $50 and $500 orders, including international, ACH, refunds, disputes, software and payout fees.
  4. Run the same decline, refund, webhook, reconciliation and reporting tests in each sandbox.
  5. Request written terms for approval, reserves, payout timing, chargebacks, data export and termination.
  6. Keep a fallback processor or wallet where downtime or account review would materially threaten revenue.

Editorial comparisons and customer reviews can reveal recurring support or usability patterns, but scores are not normalized across publications. Check the review date, country, plan, test method and any compensation disclosure; current vendor pages remain the authority for fees and availability.

The Bottom Line

Bottom line: Start with Stripe for flexible online payments, Square for POS-led businesses, Adyen for global enterprise scale and Helcim for an interchange-plus quote. Add PayPal when wallet familiarity matters, consider Braintree for app and marketplace development, and choose Authorize.net when a traditional gateway arrangement is the requirement. The winner is the provider with the lowest effective cost and lowest operational risk for your specific volume, geography and business model—not the lowest advertised rate.
