For most U.S. apartments with cable internet, the ARRIS SURFboard G34 is the best default modem-router combo. It combines a DOCSIS 3.1 cable modem, Wi-Fi 6, and four gigabit Ethernet ports without paying for capabilities most sub-gigabit plans cannot use.
The better choice changes if your apartment has fiber or building-provided Ethernet, a multi-gigabit cable plan, Wi-Fi 6E or Wi-Fi 7 devices, or bundled cable phone service. Check the connection type and your provider’s approval list before buying anything.
First: do you actually need a modem?
A modem-router combo is appropriate only when your internet arrives through a compatible cable connection. Apartment internet may instead use fiber, Ethernet, DSL, fixed wireless, or 5G.

- Fiber: Buy a router, not a cable modem. The building or ISP normally supplies or controls the optical network terminal.
- Building Ethernet: You generally need a router connected to the apartment’s Ethernet jack.
- DSL: You need DSL-specific equipment or the provider’s gateway.
- Fixed wireless or 5G home internet: These usually require an ISP-specific gateway.
If you are unsure, identify what connects to the current gateway. A coaxial cable with a screw-on connector usually indicates cable service; an Ethernet cable from a wall jack may indicate building Ethernet or fiber service.

Xfinity’s compatibility guidance also distinguishes fiber-to-the-unit service from cable service and directs customers to check equipment by address and plan.

Compatibility is a mandatory requirement, not a feature to compare after speed and Wi-Fi specifications. Check the provider’s current list for your exact plan, service area, address where applicable, and voice-service requirements.
Best overall: ARRIS SURFboard G34
The ARRIS SURFboard G34 is the most balanced choice for a typical cable-connected apartment. It uses DOCSIS 3.1 and includes dual-band Wi-Fi 6 plus four gigabit Ethernet ports.
That combination fits apartments with plans from the mid-hundreds of megabits up to around 1 Gbps, provided the ISP approves the model for the plan. It is compact enough to avoid the extra power adapter and cables of separate equipment, while Wi-Fi 6 is generally sufficient for phones, laptops, streaming devices, and ordinary smart-home equipment.
ARRIS lists coverage of up to 2,500 square feet, but treat that as a manufacturer estimate rather than a guarantee. A smaller apartment with concrete walls, metal framing, a utility closet, or dense neighboring networks can be harder to cover than a larger open home.
The G34’s important limitation is its gigabit-only Ethernet. It is not the right choice when you need wired speeds above 1 Gbps, and its dual-band Wi-Fi 6 design provides less capability than newer Wi-Fi 7 hardware for compatible 6-GHz clients.

Best premium option: ARRIS SURFboard G54
The ARRIS SURFboard G54 is the better fit for a multi-gigabit cable plan or an apartment with several newer Wi-Fi 6E and Wi-Fi 7 devices.
It combines DOCSIS 3.1 with a quad-band Wi-Fi 7 design using 2.4-, dual 5-, and 6-GHz bands. It also has one 10-Gbps Ethernet port and four 1-Gbps ports. That wired connection is more meaningful than a large headline wireless number: a multi-gigabit plan needs a suitably fast WAN/LAN path, as well as compatible client hardware.
Independent comparison testing favors the G54 for raw wireless performance over the G34, particularly because of its 6-GHz capability. That does not make it the better purchase for every apartment. On a sub-gigabit plan with mostly Wi-Fi 5 or Wi-Fi 6 devices, the additional capability may add cost and power consumption without improving everyday internet access.
Choose the G54 when your plan, devices, and wired network can use it—not simply because Wi-Fi 7 is newer. Verify the exact ISP and plan approval before ordering.
Best high-end Wi-Fi 6 alternative: NETGEAR Nighthawk CAX80
The NETGEAR Nighthawk CAX80 remains a capable DOCSIS 3.1/Wi-Fi 6 combo for cable customers who want faster wired networking without moving to Wi-Fi 7. It includes a 2.5-Gbps Ethernet connection and is listed for major U.S. cable providers including Xfinity, Spectrum, and Cox.

NETGEAR’s official page showed different price signals—$499.99 in one crawl and $449.99 in another—so treat the price as volatile and verify it before buying. At a high price, its value depends on whether you actually need the 2.5-Gbps port or its higher-end Wi-Fi 6 capability.
The CAX80 is not for fiber service. NETGEAR also states that it does not support bundled cable voice service, so it is unsuitable when the gateway must provide a cable phone line.
Wi-Fi 6 or Wi-Fi 7 for an apartment?
Wi-Fi 6 is usually the sensible choice when your plan is 1 Gbps or slower, your devices are mostly Wi-Fi 5 or Wi-Fi 6, and you want mature hardware at a lower cost.

Wi-Fi 7 cannot make an older phone or a sub-gigabit service use speeds it does not support.
Do not confuse these separate limits:
- Your ISP’s plan speed.
- The modem’s DOCSIS capability.
- The gateway’s WAN and LAN Ethernet speeds.
- The aggregate wireless link rate.
- The real throughput of one client device.
A device advertised with a theoretical 10-Gbps capability will not automatically deliver 10 Gbps. The ISP’s network, provisioning, plan, Ethernet port, client hardware, signal conditions, and congestion all matter.
How to choose by internet plan

DOCSIS 3.1 should generally be the minimum sensible standard for a new cable purchase. It is better suited to current gigabit and newer upstream technologies than DOCSIS 3.0, but it does not guarantee any particular speed. Approval and plan provisioning still control the result.

Combo versus separate modem and router

A combo is simpler initially, but a failure takes down both internet access and Wi-Fi. Separate equipment costs more space and may cost more initially, yet it can be easier to troubleshoot and more economical over a longer ownership period.

Compare the purchase cost with your actual monthly rental charge, included gateway upgrades, security features, technical support, warranty, and how long you expect to remain with the provider. Buying your own equipment does not automatically save money.
Apartment placement matters more than the coverage number
In an apartment, the gateway’s location and surrounding radio congestion can matter more than moving from Wi-Fi 6 to Wi-Fi 7.
- Place the gateway in an open, central location where possible.
- Keep it elevated rather than on the floor.
- Do not hide it inside a cabinet, closet, or behind large furniture.
- Keep it away from microwaves, cordless-phone bases, Bluetooth hubs, and large metal objects.
- Use the cable outlet that permits the best placement, not automatically the outlet nearest the television.
- Connect a gaming PC, work computer, streaming box, or access point by Ethernet when practical.
Cox also recommends a central location because wireless signals radiate outward from the gateway. If the coax outlet is at one end of a long apartment, Ethernet from the gateway to a wired access point may work better than buying a larger, more powerful wireless system.

Usually not automatically. A single well-placed gateway is often preferable in a small apartment because it costs less, consumes less power, avoids wireless-backhaul losses, and adds fewer transmitters to a crowded building.
Consider mesh or a separate wired access point when the apartment is long or multi-level, the gateway must remain at one end, thick walls create a persistent dead zone, or a bedroom or office cannot maintain a reliable connection. Wired Ethernet backhaul is preferable when available. Avoid buying a three-pack solely because its advertised coverage is measured in thousands of square feet.

Check compatibility before buying
Use this checklist:
- Identify whether the service is cable, fiber, Ethernet, DSL, fixed wireless, or 5G.
- Record the ISP and exact plan tier.
- Check the provider’s current approved-equipment page.
- Verify the model for your address or service area if the provider requires it.
- Confirm whether the plan includes voice service.
- Check DOCSIS version and Ethernet-port speed.
- Confirm whether customer-owned gateways are supported.
- Check the warranty, return policy, and whether the unit is new, refurbished, or previously registered.
Cox’s certified-modem list and NETGEAR’s compatibility database are useful starting points, but the provider’s current plan-specific information takes priority. Cox says customers using their own equipment are responsible for compatibility, security settings, upgrades, and much of the device troubleshooting.
Installation and activation
- Disconnect the old ISP gateway.
- Connect the coaxial cable firmly to the combo’s cable input, if you have cable service.
- Connect a computer to an Ethernet port for initial setup.
- Connect the power adapter and wait for the downstream, upstream, and online indicators to stabilize.
- Open the manufacturer’s setup app or local administration page.
- Set a unique Wi-Fi name and strong password.
- Change the default administrator password.
- Enable automatic firmware updates if the device offers the option.
- Use the ISP activation portal or contact support to register the modem’s MAC address.
- Reboot after activation.
- Run one wired speed test, then test Wi-Fi near the gateway and in problem areas.
The first test should be wired because it separates an ISP or modem problem from a wireless problem. Compare the result with the plan while allowing for test-server load, device limitations, Wi-Fi interference, and congestion.
What to do when activation fails
Check these items in order:
- The exact model is approved for the ISP and plan.
- The coax connector is secure and the apartment outlet is active.
- The gateway has finished its full boot cycle.
- The correct MAC address or device identifier was submitted.
- The old gateway was removed from the account if required.
- The device is not still registered to a previous customer.
- The ISP is not experiencing an outage.
- The modem supports the plan’s upstream requirements as well as its download rating.
- ISP support can provision the device manually.
If the ISP confirms that service is healthy but the gateway remains offline, device-specific troubleshooting may belong with the manufacturer. Customer-owned equipment can reduce the amount of support the ISP provides.

Likely causes include congested 2.4-GHz or 5-GHz channels, poor gateway placement, client-device limitations, thick walls, metal construction, neighboring networks, band-selection problems, outdated firmware, or interference from building equipment.
- Move the gateway to an open, elevated location.
- Test 5 GHz close to the gateway.
- Update gateway and client firmware or drivers.
- Use Ethernet for fixed, high-demand devices.
- Separate or rename bands only if band steering is causing a specific problem.
- Add a wired access point if the floor plan requires it.
- Use mesh only when one gateway cannot provide adequate coverage.
Bottom line
For an ordinary cable-connected apartment with a plan up to roughly 1 Gbps, start with the compatible ARRIS SURFboard G34. Choose the ARRIS SURFboard G54 for verified multi-gig service and Wi-Fi 6E/7 devices, or the NETGEAR CAX80 when you specifically want high-end Wi-Fi 6 and 2.5-Gbps wired networking. If your apartment uses fiber or building Ethernet, skip modem combos entirely and buy a suitable router.
