Android’s supported way to simulate a location is mock location. You enable Developer options, select an installed app as the mock-location provider, and then test the desired coordinate or route. This can help developers, QA teams and privacy researchers—but it is not a universal GPS override, anonymity tool or guaranteed way to bypass a game or service’s location checks.
This guide focuses on legitimate testing and controlled simulation. App names such as “Fake GPS,” “GPS Joystick” and “Location Changer” are frequently duplicated, so verify the exact developer, package ID, privacy disclosure and current Play Store listing before installing anything.
Quick answer
For a feature-rich consumer mock-location interface, Fake GPS Location–GPS JoyStick is the clearest currently documented candidate in this research. Its listing describes joystick-style movement and location changing, but its Play Data Safety disclosure says it may share location, app-performance information and device IDs with third parties.

What “GPS spoofing” means on Android
Mock location is the Android testing mechanism that supplies software-generated coordinates to supported location consumers. On Android Marshmallow and later, the documented workflow requires selecting a mock-location app in Developer options. Google’s location documentation also notes that entering mock mode clears cached fused-location data and can affect fused-location clients, including geofencing-related APIs.
GPS spoofing is the broader goal of making an app or service receive a false location. A mock-location app is one method; it does not physically alter satellite signals or guarantee that every application accepts the simulated position.
A VPN changes apparent IP geography, not the phone’s GPS or fused location. An Android Studio emulator simulates location inside a virtual device. Rooted or system-modified phones are a separate, higher-risk category and are unnecessary for ordinary mock-location testing.

Android can combine GPS, Wi-Fi, cellular networks and device sensors when estimating location. See Google’s explanation of location data. Consequently, changing one location provider may not change what every target app reports.
The strongest current options by use case

This is intentionally a defensible shortlist rather than a padded “10 best” ranking. The available evidence does not verify ten current, distinct Android listings, their latest compatibility, pricing and privacy disclosures. Generic names in this category often refer to multiple unrelated packages.
App candidates that require live verification
The following names may be useful search candidates, but they should not be treated as confirmed recommendations without checking the current official listing immediately before installation:

- GPS Emulator: a possible testing-focused option. Verify the exact developer, package ID, route controls, Android support, ads and privacy policy.
- Lexa’s Fake GPS Location: a long-running candidate for simple single-location testing, but older coverage does not prove current availability or compatibility.
- Fake GPS Location: a generic title used by multiple developers. Never install based on the name or icon alone.
- Location Changer: verify the exact publisher, update date, route features, account requirements and privacy documentation.
- Mock Locations: potentially relevant to developer and QA workflows; confirm that it supports the current Android mock-location process.
- Hola Fake GPS: include only if an identifiable current official listing and privacy documentation are available.
- GPS Joystick: a duplicated product name. Confirm the publisher and official distribution channel.
- Fake GPS Route: check whether it provides genuine waypoint playback or merely repeated single-point changes.
- GPS Location Changer / GPS Location Simulator: treat these as search categories, not unique products, until the developer and package are verified.
Prefer the Play Store, where publisher identity, version history, reviews and Data Safety information are visible. Play distribution is not a guarantee of safety, but it is preferable to an unknown APK mirror. Sideload only when the developer’s official site clearly documents the package and its authenticity.
How to set up a mock-location app
- Open Settings.
- Open About phone.
- Tap Build number repeatedly until Android confirms that Developer options are enabled. The number of taps and wording can vary.
- Return to Settings and open Developer options.
- Search for Select mock location app, Mock location app or similar wording.
- Select the installed simulator.
- Open the simulator, choose a coordinate and start the simulation.
- Check the result in a simple map or test application before using your own target app.
- When finished, stop the simulation and return the mock-location setting to None, if that option is available.
Menu names vary across Pixel, Samsung One UI, Xiaomi/HyperOS or MIUI, OnePlus/OxygenOS, Motorola and other Android skins. A work profile or organization-managed phone may hide or block the selector entirely.
What should happen when it works?
The selected test app should provide the simulated coordinate to supported location clients. A map may show the chosen point, although caching and the map’s own location logic can delay the change. After stopping the simulation, the device should return to its real location; an individual app may retain cached data temporarily.

Do not expect uniform behavior. Some apps ignore mock locations, detect them, use server-side verification, or combine GPS with Wi-Fi, cellular, IP, Bluetooth, sensors, account history and device-integrity signals. Unrealistic jumps or impossible travel speeds can also produce inconsistent results.

Free installation does not mean friction-free use. Apps may show full-screen advertising, limit saved locations, restrict route playback, impose background limits or place key controls behind an in-app purchase. Current prices, subscriptions and trial terms should be read from the live Play Store listing on the publication date; no reliable current price was verified here.
Read both the developer’s privacy policy and Play’s Data Safety section. The currently documented Fake GPS Location–GPS JoyStick listing says it may share location, app-performance information and device IDs with third parties, while also indicating encryption in transit. That is a material consideration for privacy-sensitive users, not a footnote.

A simulated coordinate is not anonymity. The simulator, target app, network, account and handset may still reveal other information. If the real goal is location privacy, review Android permissions and use a separate test device rather than assuming a fake coordinate hides all signals.
Games and protected services: the important warning
Do not treat a mock-location app as a safe game-spoofing tool. Location-based games may prohibit falsifying device location and can detect inconsistent signals, mock-provider metadata, impossible travel, modified environments or integrity problems. Niantic’s terms expressly prohibit techniques that alter or falsify device location, and its privacy information describes the use of GPS, Wi-Fi and cellular signals. An account penalty can be permanent.
The same caution applies to workplace attendance, delivery and fleet systems, financial or dating services, government services, emergency services and regional-access controls. Do not use these tools to misrepresent a real-world location or defeat fraud, identity or security checks.

Common failure modes
The app is missing from the mock-location selector
- Confirm it is installed in the same Android user profile.
- Restart the phone and reopen Developer options.
- Search Settings for “mock location.”
- Check whether a work or device-management policy blocks the feature.
- Remove duplicate fake-GPS apps and try a clearly documented Play Store app.
- Some apps do not implement Android’s mock-location mechanism at all.
The map returns to the real location
- Keep the simulator active during the test.
- Review battery optimization and background restrictions.
- Confirm Location is enabled.
- Test with a simple location-aware app to separate simulator problems from target-app behavior.
- Restart the target app after stopping and restarting simulation.
- Remember that another provider, cached data or mock-location detection may be responsible.
The simulator crashes or jumps unpredictably
Check the Android version, device manufacturer, background restrictions, route speed and waypoint spacing. Simulating an impossible movement pattern can be less reliable than testing a modest, realistic route.
The target app refuses to work
This may be intentional. The app may reject mock locations, inspect developer settings, combine multiple location sources or verify the location on its servers. Use the service’s supported developer or sandbox tools instead of trying to bypass its protections.
Better alternatives for professional testing
- Android Studio emulator: the best fit for repeatable developer workflows and virtual-device test cases.
- Dedicated test handset: isolates experiments from personal, banking, work and emergency apps.
- App-specific test tools: use a product’s own sandbox, simulator or QA environment when available.
- VPN: use only for IP-region and network testing. It is not a GPS substitute.
Google Play guidance is also evolving. Android developers should review the 2026 location-permission policy preview and current guidance favoring foreground location as the minimum scope where appropriate. Android 17 developers should also consult Google’s location-privacy update before relying on older assumptions.
