For browser automation through an MCP client, start with Microsoft Playwright MCP when you want to run or manage the browser yourself. Choose Browserbase MCP when you want browser automation on Browserbase’s hosted cloud infrastructure, using Browserbase and Stagehand. Neither choice is established as universally faster, cheaper, or more reliable: test both against your own workflows before deciding.
What these browser MCP servers do
The Model Context Protocol (MCP) lets an AI client call tools exposed by a server. A browser MCP server gives the client browser-oriented actions—such as navigating to a page, clicking controls, or entering text—rather than requiring the model to operate a browser manually.
Microsoft describes Playwright MCP as enabling LLMs to interact with web pages using structured accessibility snapshots. Its documented actions include navigation, clicks, typing, form filling, screenshots, tabs, dialogs, and keyboard and mouse input. Browserbase describes its MCP server as providing cloud browser automation using Browserbase and Stagehand.
These are different execution models, not interchangeable guarantees of quality. Playwright MCP is a browser automation server you configure and run; Browserbase MCP is the hosted-cloud option. The right fit depends on where you want browser sessions to run and who should manage their operational needs.

Playwright MCP is Microsoft’s official Playwright server for browser automation through MCP. Its structured accessibility snapshots give an agent page structure it can act on through roles, text, and element references; this is distinct from a workflow that depends solely on visual screenshots. That representation can be useful when an agent needs to identify a button by its accessible name or understand form controls.
What it can do
- Navigate, go back or forward, and reload pages.
- Click, type, fill forms, and select dropdown options.
- Take screenshots and operate tabs and dialogs.
- Send keyboard and mouse actions.
- Optionally run Playwright code for more complex interactions.
It also offers configuration choices for Chrome, Firefox, WebKit, and Microsoft Edge; headed or headless operation; persistent or isolated profiles; storage-state loading; CDP endpoints; browser-extension attachment; configurable idle timeouts; and standalone HTTP transport. Repository options also include capabilities such as vision, PDF, and DevTools, plus code-generation language choices. Check the current documentation for exact flags and compatibility before building a client configuration around them.
Connect a client
The official setup uses npx @playwright/mcp@latest and documents configurations for VS Code, Cursor, Windsurf, Claude Code, Claude Desktop, Codex, and other MCP clients. Since each client stores MCP server configuration in its own way, use the client-specific configuration shown in the Playwright documentation rather than copying a configuration for a different client. The command below is the documented package invocation; it is not, by itself, a universal client configuration file:
npx @playwright/mcp@latestBefore connecting an agent to an authenticated or sensitive site, decide whether it should use a persistent browser profile or an isolated one. A persistent profile can preserve browser state; an isolated profile is better suited to keeping a run separate. If you load storage state, use credentials and session data appropriate to the task, and avoid exposing secrets in prompts or logs.

When Playwright MCP fits
- You want control over browser choice, profile behavior, and connection setup.
- Your team can run and maintain the browser process and its network access.
- Your agent benefits from page structure and accessibility information, rather than screenshots alone.
- You need to evaluate local or self-managed execution before selecting a hosted service.
2. Browserbase MCP: consider it for hosted cloud execution
Browserbase’s official MCP page describes a server for cloud browser automation using Browserbase and Stagehand. That makes it the alternative to examine when your team prefers remote, managed browser execution rather than operating the browser process itself.
Review Browserbase’s current documentation for client setup, account requirements, session configuration, and available controls. The source-backed description establishes the hosted-cloud model, but does not provide enough detail here to claim a particular setup command, pricing, concurrency limit, browser matrix, or performance advantage.
When Browserbase MCP fits
- You prefer browser execution on hosted infrastructure.
- You want to evaluate Browserbase and Stagehand as the browser automation stack for an MCP client.
- Your team would rather assess a managed remote-browser workflow than own the browser runtime.
How to choose: test the workflow, not the label
The official product pages do not publish a neutral, same-task benchmark comparing these servers for cost, latency, reliability, or task success. Treat a choice as an architecture decision and measure it in the sites and sessions your agent will actually use.
- Use representative tasks. Include navigation, forms, pages with dynamic content, and the authentication flows your agent will encounter.
- Measure end-to-end latency. Record time from the client’s tool call to a verified completed action, not just browser startup.
- Track failure modes. Distinguish selector or page-understanding errors from network failures, expired authentication, timeouts, and browser startup problems.
- Test concurrency. Run the number of simultaneous sessions you expect in production and observe queueing and completion behavior.
- Check session isolation. Verify that cookies, storage, and logged-in state do not leak between users or jobs.
- Compare total cost. Include infrastructure and engineering time for a self-managed setup, and the applicable hosted-service charges for a managed setup. Confirm current prices with each provider; do not infer cost from the server description.
Use the same task definitions, target pages, success criteria, and run conditions for each candidate. Repeat runs enough to notice intermittent failures, and record browser choice and session setup so the results are interpretable. A result on one site or authentication flow does not establish a general winner.

Common decision mistakes
- Choosing based on an assumed speed winner: the official sources cited do not establish one. Benchmark your own tasks.
- Treating screenshots and browser control as the same need: an image capture does not replace clicks, typing, or session interaction. Use an interactive browser server when the agent must operate a site.
- Leaving session behavior implicit: decide deliberately between persistent and isolated profiles, and validate authentication handling.
