For most photographers, the Canon P is the best LTM camera to buy when you can find a serviced example. It combines a bright 35/50/100mm finder, a 1/1000-second shutter and broad lens compatibility without Leica collector pricing. Choose the Voigtländer Bessa R if you want a built-in meter and easier handling, the Leica IIIf for the classic Barnack Leica experience, or the Leica IIIg if you want the most refined—and usually most expensive—screw-mount Leica.
Here, LTM means Leica Thread Mount: the 39mm screw mount also called L39 or rangefinder M39. It is not the modern L-Mount bayonet used by Leica, Panasonic and Sigma mirrorless cameras.
What is an LTM camera?
Leica Thread Mount (LTM), L39 and Leica screw mount describe a family of 35mm rangefinder cameras and lenses using a 39mm screw thread. Leica developed the system before introducing the bayonet-mounted Leica M3 in 1953; Canon, Nikon, Voigtländer, Minolta and others also made compatible bodies and lenses. Leica’s history of the system places these cameras in the foundation of modern rangefinder photography.
“M39” needs care. Some M39 lenses were made for enlargers or SLRs and have a different flange distance or no rangefinder coupling. Before buying, confirm that a lens is an LTM rangefinder lens, check rear-element clearance and verify that its focal length is covered by the camera’s finder.

LTM lenses can be adapted to mirrorless cameras, but the original rangefinder coupling is not used. You focus through live view or an electronic viewfinder, and framing depends on the digital body and adapter.

Canon P: best overall for most photographers
Introduced in 1959, the Canon P uses the LTM/M39 mount, a metal focal-plane shutter from 1 second to 1/1000 second plus Bulb, and a combined finder with 35mm, 50mm and 100mm frame lines. Kamerastore’s Canon P specifications make it a useful reference.
That combination makes the P unusually easy to recommend for street, travel and documentary work. You can use common 35mm and 50mm lenses without buying several accessory finders, and the body generally costs less than a comparable Leica. A used listing observed around August 2026 showed approximately $418, but it was sold out; treat that as a dated market snapshot, not a normal or guaranteed price.

The compromises are real: film loads from the bottom, there is no built-in meter, and a shutter that fires at every speed may still be badly timed. Buy a P with documented service, a clear and aligned rangefinder, and demonstrated film transport rather than choosing solely on chrome condition.
Voigtländer Bessa R: best practical LTM camera
The Cosina Voigtländer Bessa R (introduced in 2000) is the most convenient LTM body for regular shooting. It adds a TTL meter, parallax-corrected 35/50/75/90mm framelines and a vertical metal shutter rated from 1 second to 1/2000 second plus Bulb. Its listed meter range covers ISO 25–3200. It is no longer manufactured, so every example is a used-market purchase. A meter that responds is not necessarily accurate: test it across light levels, inspect the battery compartment for corrosion and compare it with a known-good meter. Also check the rangefinder patch, shutter consistency and film advance. Observed specialist listings around August 2026 were roughly $719–$734 and sold out, illustrating both its premium and its intermittent availability.

Choose the Bessa R when a built-in meter and faster operation matter more than a historically original Leica body. Do not assume its later production guarantees reliability.
Leica IIIf: best classic Leica experience
The 1950 Leica IIIf is one of the last screw-mount Leicas before the M series. It has a horizontal cloth shutter from 1 second to 1/1000 second plus Bulb and no built-in meter. Kamerastore’s IIIf listing provides baseline specifications.
The IIIf is tiny, quiet and historically significant, but its separate viewing and focusing windows, bottom loading and external-meter requirement make it slower than a Canon P or Bessa R. It is best for deliberate photography and for buyers who specifically want the Barnack experience. A certified listing observed around August 2026 was about $960 and sold out; service history and condition explain much of the spread.

Make sure you are checking the filter mm size, not the lens focal length, as not all modern lenses display the filter symbol Ø size on the lens. Leica IIIg: the premium Barnack choice
The IIIg is generally the most refined user Barnack Leica. Its brighter finder and built-in 50mm/90mm framing make composition easier than on earlier models, while retaining the compact screw-mount form.
It is not automatically the best value. Collector demand can make an original, clean IIIg cost substantially more than a Canon P or IIIf without producing better photographs. Verify the exact variant, serial range, originality, repainting and service documentation; LTM collection listings show how cosmetic descriptions affect the market.

- Canon 7 and 7s: larger, capable Japanese bodies with bright finders and access to Canon’s LTM lenses. Individual specifications and condition differ.
- Canon VI-L and VI-T: advanced bodies with interchangeable finders and unusual features, but more complex to source and assess.
- Leica IIIc and earlier II/III models: historically important and sometimes cheaper, but usually slower to load and more likely to need substantial service.
- Voigtländer Bessa L: an LTM body without a rangefinder. It suits wide-angle lenses, an external finder and zone focusing; it is not a conventional focusing rangefinder. See its product description.
- FED and Zorki: inexpensive Soviet LTM options, but sample-to-sample tolerances, shutter condition and lens compatibility can vary considerably.
Choose by the feature that matters most
- Need a built-in meter? Start with the Bessa R. For a Canon or Leica, budget for a shoe-mounted, handheld or phone meter.
- Want the best value? Look for a serviced Canon P, not merely the cheapest body.
- Want a Leica body? Pick a serviced IIIf for value or a IIIg for finder refinement and collector appeal.
- Want the smallest camera? Barnack Leicas are exceptionally compact, but their loading and controls are slow.
- Want wide-angle photography? Ensure the body has suitable framelines or plan for an accessory finder; the Bessa L is explicitly an external-finder design.
- Already own LTM lenses for digital use? Choose an adapter and digital body based on sensor performance and focusing aids, not on the prestige of the film body.
What to check before buying
- Rangefinder alignment: Test at infinity and close distance with the actual lens, at a wide aperture. A moving patch is not proof of calibration.
- Complete shutter range: Test slow speeds as well as 1/1000 or 1/500. Barnack slow-speed escapements often become sticky.
- Curtains: Open the shutter in a dark room and shine a bright light through both curtains to look for pinholes. A film test or professional timing check is better.
- Film transport: Confirm advance, frame spacing, rewind release and take-up spool condition. Ask the seller to demonstrate loading if possible.
- Meter (Bessa R): Check batteries, corrosion and smooth response against a known-good meter.
- Lens optics: Distinguish dust from haze, fungus, balsam separation and cleaning marks. Check for oil on aperture blades and a smooth focusing helicoid.
- Collapsible lenses: Confirm the tube locks in shooting position and never collapse a lens unless that body-lens combination is known to clear the shutter.
- Mount and coupling: Verify thread standard, rangefinder coupling, rear-element clearance and correct focal-length framing. Do not assume every M39 lens is an LTM lens.
- Service evidence: “Works,” “shutter fires” and “CLA’d” are not equivalent. Prefer a dated invoice identifying the technician and adjustments, plus a return policy.
- Originality: Separate a good user camera from a collectible. Repaint, replacement leatherette, engraving and non-matching parts affect collector value but not necessarily photographic function.
Budget for the complete kit
The body is only the beginning. Include an LTM lens, an external finder when required, a meter for unmetered bodies, caps and hood, possible CLA or repair, film, processing and scanning. A cheap unserviced body can cost more than a complete serviced kit. Specialist dealers such as Kamerastore’s LTM collection may cost more than auctions, but grading and return terms reduce the risk of an invisible mechanical fault.

LTM versus an M-mount or fixed-lens camera
An M-mount film body is usually easier to load and more modern to operate, but normally costs more and may require an adapter ring for LTM lenses. If you do not need interchangeable lenses, a fixed-lens rangefinder can be a simpler beginner purchase. These alternatives trade away the LTM lens ecosystem, so choose based on the way you actually shoot rather than on the mount’s reputation.

“Best” in the LTM market is a condition decision before it is a specification decision. A serviced Canon P or IIIf with an aligned rangefinder and tested shutter is usually a safer photographic tool than a pristine-looking but unserviced prestige model.
