For making a live wallpaper from your own video, start with intoLive. VideoToLive is a straightforward alternative, while Zedge is better for browsing ready-made designs. Already have a Live Photo? Skip the extra app and use Apple’s wallpaper settings.
One important caveat: on current iPhones, a Live Photo wallpaper animates on the Lock Screen when the phone wakes. It is not an endlessly playing video behind Home Screen app icons. The iPhone 14 and 15 are suitable for this workflow, but “any iPhone” depends on the model, iOS version, and app compatibility.
What “live wallpaper” means on an iPhone
Apps use “live wallpaper” to describe several different things, so check what the app actually exports:

This is the closest match to a native live wallpaper.
- Video-to-Live-Photo converter: Turns a clip into a Live Photo that you then choose in Apple’s wallpaper editor.
- Dynamic, depth, or animated content: May shift with the time of day, add a spatial or parallax effect, or animate only in an app preview. That does not necessarily mean it exports as a Live Photo.
Apple’s documented Live Photo wallpaper feature applies to iOS 17 or later. Its setup instructions are for the Lock Screen, not a continuously animated Home Screen. See Apple’s Live Photo wallpaper instructions.

App features, minimum iOS versions, availability, and prices can vary by country and change over time. Confirm the current App Store listing for your region before downloading or paying.
Which app should you choose?
intoLive: best overall for your own clips
Choose intoLive if your starting point is a video, GIF, or other personal media and you want to create a Lock Screen Live Photo. Its purpose is more directly matched to that task than a general wallpaper catalog, and its listing indicates iOS 26 support. When exporting, use the app’s dedicated Live Wallpaper workflow rather than saving only a still or an ordinary video. The developer’s troubleshooting guidance also identifies Low Power Mode as a possible reason motion may not appear.

Some features may require payment, and the exact price depends on the storefront. If you only want to browse premade designs, a creator-focused editor may be more work than you need.

VideoToLive: a video-conversion alternative
VideoToLive is aimed at converting video to Live Photos; its App Store description also mentions trimming and combining clips. The developer lists iOS 15 or later and support for iPhone 6s and newer. Treat those as the developer’s stated compatibility details, not a guarantee for every model or future iOS release. The U.S. App Store listing shows a $12.99 in-app purchase to remove ads; check your local listing for current terms.

It is a converter rather than a reason to expect a large, curated wallpaper library. Its U.S. App Store privacy disclosures say identifiers may be used to track users and diagnostics may be collected. Review the current privacy label before importing sensitive personal media; App Store disclosures are developer-provided, not an independent audit.
Zedge: best for browsing designs
Zedge is the better fit if you want to explore a broad personalization catalog instead of converting your own clips. Its listing describes wallpapers and features such as dynamic 24-hour wallpapers, Spatial Scene effects with depth and motion, and Lock Screen widgets. These are distinct from a native Live Photo: a wallpaper that moves in a preview or changes with time does not automatically become an animated Live Photo on the Lock Screen. Availability and premium access can vary by item and region.

Apple’s built-in tools: best if you already have a Live Photo
If a suitable Live Photo is already in Photos, Apple’s wallpaper editor is all you need. This avoids installing a converter and is the simplest option for setting a photo you took with the iPhone. It cannot, by itself, convert a regular video into a Live Photo.

How to turn a video into a Live Photo wallpaper
- Choose a suitable clip. A short, clear portrait video is a practical starting point. Keep the important movement near the beginning and avoid a source that is already heavily compressed.
- Open it in intoLive or VideoToLive. Grant access to the relevant Photos items if iOS asks. App controls and labels can change between versions.
- Trim and frame the action. Keep the main subject clear of the clock, widgets, notifications, and the top and bottom crop. Preview the composition rather than assuming the full video frame will fit.
- Export as a Live Photo. Choose the app’s Live Photo or Live Wallpaper option. Saving a video or a still frame is not the same export.
- Set it in iOS. Open Settings → Wallpaper → Add New Wallpaper → Photos → Live Photo, then select the exported result.
- Check playback and add it. If the editor shows a playback control, make sure it is enabled. Tap Add, then choose Set as Wallpaper Pair or Customize Home Screen if you want a separate Home Screen appearance.
- Test on the Lock Screen. Wake the phone and check the Lock Screen. Do not expect the wallpaper to play continuously behind Home Screen icons.

Set an existing Live Photo without another app
On a compatible iPhone running iOS 17 or later, go to Settings → Wallpaper → Add New Wallpaper → Photos → Live Photo. Choose the Live Photo, confirm playback is enabled if that control is shown, and tap Add. Set it as a wallpaper pair or customize the Home Screen separately. This route is for a genuine Live Photo—not an ordinary video.
If your live wallpaper stays still
- Check where you are looking. Live Photo wallpaper playback is a Lock Screen feature; the Home Screen is not a continuously playing video background.
- Turn off Low Power Mode temporarily. Check Settings → Battery → Low Power Mode. intoLive specifically notes that Low Power Mode can prevent Live Photo motion from appearing.
- Check the wallpaper playback control. Reopen the wallpaper editor and make sure playback is enabled if the control is available.
- Confirm the export is a Live Photo. If Photos shows only a still image or an ordinary video, return to the project and export using the app’s Live Photo or Live Wallpaper option.
- Try a different source clip. A shorter portrait clip with a clear action is easier to frame. Re-export if the original appears corrupted, badly cropped, or excessively compressed.
- Test an Apple-created Live Photo. If that one animates, the third-party export or source file is the likely issue. If it does not, check iOS version, playback settings, and device compatibility.
- Check access and compatibility. Make sure the app can access the selected Photos media, and check its current minimum iOS version and regional App Store availability.
If an app calls content “live” but it remains static in Apple’s wallpaper editor, it may be offering an animated preview, video, depth effect, or dynamic design rather than a native Live Photo. Look for explicit wording such as “Save as Live Photo” or “Export Live Wallpaper.”
Common expectations to adjust
- Home Screen motion: Do not buy a converter expecting continuous video behind app icons. Apple’s Live Photo wallpaper playback is for the Lock Screen.
- Sound: Treat the wallpaper as a visual effect; do not expect a source video’s audio to play as part of the normal wallpaper experience.
- Battery: Do not assume there is no battery effect. Actual impact depends on display use, brightness, Always-On Display behavior, and other phone activity; avoid relying on unsupported battery estimates.
- “Any iPhone” compatibility: Compatibility depends on the iPhone model, iOS version, app support, and whether the export preserves Live Photo data. The iPhone 14 and 15 are suitable targets, but check the individual app’s current listing for older devices.
Do you need to pay?
Start with the free download or Apple’s built-in tools and see whether the export you need is available. Consider paying only if the upgrade removes disruptive ads, unlocks the Live Photo export or a useful editing control, or removes a watermark or quality limit that matters to you. VideoToLive’s U.S. listing has shown a $12.99 ad-removal purchase; intoLive and Zedge offer in-app purchases or premium features, but check current regional prices in the App Store. A larger catalog alone is not a reason to pay if you need a guaranteed personal-video-to-Live-Photo workflow.
