Short answer: the “AI analyzed one million reviews” project did not identify the best iPhone in 2026. Its September 2024 snapshot ranked the iPhone 14 Plus as the highest-scoring iPhone in a mostly 2022–2024 dataset, while Samsung’s Galaxy S24 Plus ranked first overall. That is useful evidence about customer sentiment—not a current, controlled product test.
What the million-review project actually found
The analysis, reported on September 27, 2024, processed more than 1.1 million online smartphone reviews. The reported sources were Google Reviews aggregating retailer and carrier reviews, including Amazon, eBay, Verizon and AT&T. The project used Puppeteer to scrape reviews and GPT-4o mini to classify comments.
The final comparison covered five categories:
- Value
- Performance
- Design
- Battery life
- Camera
In the main 2022–2024 comparison, Samsung’s Galaxy S24 Plus ranked first overall and the iPhone 14 Plus was the highest-ranked iPhone. The Galaxy Z Flip 6 ranked third, and the iPhone 14 Pro Max was the only Pro model in that top grouping. Adding older phones reportedly moved the iPhone 13 Pro Max into fifth place, while some iPhone 12 Pro models moved ahead of the iPhone 14 Pro Max.

The researcher said iPhone SE models often outperformed more expensive iPhones, although that result was not visible in the displayed table and should be treated as an attributed claim, not an independently verified ranking.

“One million reviews” does not mean one million equal votes
The headline number describes the initial scrape, not necessarily the number of reviews directly used in every score. Reviews shorter than 20 words were discarded. The process also removed emoticons and irrelevant characters, template-like material, comments that did not demonstrate actual device use, and complaints blamed on delivery or a reseller. Roughly 30% of the initial reviews reportedly survived.
A single review could contribute both positive and negative signals—for example, praise for the camera and criticism of value. The meaningful funnel is therefore:
- More than 1.1 million initial reviews
- Filtering for length, formatting and evidence of ownership
- Retained reviews
- Category-specific comments
- Positive and negative classifications
- An aggregate model score
That is still a large corpus, but it is not the same as a representative survey of one million owners.

It is best understood as a large-scale customer-sentiment snapshot. It can reveal recurring owner language about value, battery life, cameras and everyday performance. It cannot establish that one phone has the objectively best camera, processor, display or endurance.

Important unknowns
The report does not disclose enough to reproduce the ranking confidently. Unanswered questions include:
- How many reviews each model contributed
- The geographic and language mix
- The retailer and carrier proportions
- Whether purchases were verified
- How duplicate or syndicated reviews were removed
- Whether scores were normalized for sales volume
- The distribution of review dates
- The exact GPT prompts and category rubric
- Human-validation accuracy or confidence intervals
Models with more owners may have generated many more reviews. Older phones may also benefit from discounts, mature software and more time to accumulate feedback, while newly launched phones are judged before long-term problems appear.
AI classification can introduce errors
GPT-4o mini may misunderstand sarcasm, mixed opinions, comparisons with another phone or comments about iOS, a carrier or an accessory rather than the handset. “Battery” might refer to a charger, and a positive overall review can still contain a serious category complaint. The report itself cautions that ChatGPT can make mistakes.
Removing shipping and reseller complaints makes the score more focused on the device, but it also removes part of the real ownership experience. The resulting number should not be presented as an objective measurement.

Why the iPhone 14 Plus may have scored so well
The result is plausible without proving that the 14 Plus is technically superior. It offered a large display and potentially strong battery life without the Pro Max price. Buyers may have had more moderate expectations than Pro customers, whose premium purchase creates higher expectations for cameras, materials and performance.
Because value was one of the five categories, an affordable large-screen phone could outperform a more capable but much more expensive Pro model in overall sentiment. These are reasonable explanations, not conclusions demonstrated by the dataset.
Why the ranking is not a 2026 buying guide
The analysis was tied to a 2024 device set and excluded the iPhone 16 because those models were too new to appear meaningfully. Apple’s current comparison page now lists the iPhone 17, iPhone 17e, iPhone Air, iPhone 17 Pro and iPhone 17 Pro Max, alongside iPhone 16-series models and older phones available through authorized resellers. Those newer models were not in the original data. Prices, software, trade-in offers, battery condition in used devices and Apple Intelligence support have also changed. Carrying the iPhone 14 Plus result forward as “the best iPhone” would therefore be misleading.

How to choose the best iPhone in 2026
There is no defensible universal winner without a new, transparent comparison of the current models. Choose by the feature that matters most:

Apple Intelligence is not a simple model badge
Apple lists Apple Intelligence compatibility for the iPhone 15 Pro and 15 Pro Max, iPhone 16-series models, and the listed iPhone 17 models. Apple’s support documentation says features require supported hardware and software, at least 7 GB of device storage, matching device and Siri languages, and availability in supported regions. Some personal Siri capabilities remain in development.
Check Apple’s compatibility page and Apple’s requirements document before buying. Availability can vary by language and region, including restrictions affecting devices used in or purchased in mainland China.
A practical buying checklist
- Compare unlocked and carrier prices for the same storage capacity.
- Show the total cost, not only a monthly payment.
- Treat trade-in credit as conditional on model and inspection; obtain the current quote.
- Budget for storage if you keep video, photos, games or offline media.
- Check USB-C, wireless connectivity and satellite features if they matter to you.
- For used phones, verify battery health, parts history, activation lock status, warranty and return window.
- Consider AppleCare+ only after checking current regional pricing, deductibles and theft-and-loss terms.
- Factor in accessories, repairs, financing and the likely trade-in value over your ownership period.
Verdict
The 2024 project found that the iPhone 14 Plus generated unusually strong satisfaction language for its price in that review pool. It did not prove that the iPhone 14 Plus—or any phone in the dataset—is the best iPhone in 2026. Use the finding as a historical clue: large, value-oriented iPhones can satisfy buyers more than expensive Pro models. For a current purchase, choose among Apple’s present models according to your budget, size, camera, battery, longevity and Apple Intelligence requirements, and insist on current prices and independent testing.
