The best iMessage app for most people is GamePigeon if you want to play games inside a conversation. For group decisions, Apple’s built-in Polls feature is the better no-download choice. Built-in Stickers and Memoji are the most dependable option for reactions, while GIPHY is worth considering for GIFs only after checking its current App Store listing, pricing and Messages-extension support.
Many of the most useful “iMessage apps” are already part of Messages in iOS 26, including stickers, audio messages, polls, media sharing, collaboration tools and region-limited features such as Apple Cash. The key is knowing which tools are true iMessage extensions and which ordinary iPhone apps merely share a link or file into Messages.
What is an iMessage app?
An iMessage app is an App Store download with a Messages extension that opens from the + menu inside a conversation. It can send stickers, launch games, provide GIFs, share media or insert other interactive content directly into Messages. Apple’s current iOS 26 guide explains how these extensions work and how to find more through Messages → conversation → + → Store.
That is narrower than “an app that works with Messages.” A music, mapping or productivity app may simply use the iPhone share sheet to send a link with a rich preview. It is useful, but it is not necessarily an iMessage extension.

1. GamePigeon: best overall for iMessage games
Best for: quick games with friends, family, classmates or a partner.
GamePigeon is the strongest general recommendation because it is specifically made for Messages. Its U.S. App Store listing describes a collection of short multiplayer games including 8-Ball, Mini Golf, Basketball, Cup Pong, Chess, Checkers, Four in a Row, Gomoku, Reversi, Word Hunt and Dots and Boxes. It is free to download, although optional GamePigeon+ and other purchases are available.
The U.S. listing showed approximately 232,000 ratings and a 4.0-star rating in the research snapshot. Those figures, its price and its purchase options can change, so treat them as storefront-specific rather than permanent facts. Check the current GamePigeon App Store listing before installing.
What to know before installing
- It is intended for iMessage conversations, not ordinary SMS, MMS or RCS threads.
- The U.S. App Store listing shows an age rating of 13+ and includes in-app purchases.
- Different games can have different player-count requirements.
- Both participants may not always need identical installation steps, but installing GamePigeon before starting is the safest approach.
To start, open an iMessage conversation, tap +, choose GamePigeon and select a game. The invitation appears in the conversation for the other person to open.
If GamePigeon does not appear
- Open the conversation in Messages, rather than opening GamePigeon’s standalone interface.
- Tap + and swipe through the app list. Check More if it is available.
- Confirm that GamePigeon is installed on the current iPhone.
- Check that the thread is using iMessage rather than SMS, MMS or RCS.
- Update the app and iOS, then force-close and reopen Messages.
- Restart the iPhone. Reinstall only after checking whether purchases or saved content are linked to your Apple Account.
2. Apple Polls: best for group decisions without a download
Best for: choosing a restaurant, film, travel date, meeting time or other group preference.
Apple’s built-in Polls feature keeps a decision in the existing conversation. Apple documents polls for iMessage conversations and gives examples such as deciding what to eat, what to watch, where to travel or when to meet. See Apple’s Polls support documentation.
Polls are a better fit than a third-party survey app when the group only needs a quick answer. They do not replace advanced forms, anonymous surveys or detailed voting systems. Mixed iMessage, RCS and SMS groups may not support every behavior in the same way, and availability can vary by region, account state and operating-system version.

3. Built-in Stickers and Memoji: best dependable sticker option
Best for: everyday reactions, personal stickers and placing stickers over message bubbles or media.
Messages includes stickers and Memoji without requiring another download or subscription. The built-in tools are the safest default for readers who want quick reactions and reliable integration rather than a huge themed catalog. They are also less exposed to the risk that a third-party developer abandons an old extension.
The trade-off is variety. Dedicated sticker packs may offer fandoms, sports, artists, holidays, memes or niche artwork that Apple’s built-in collection does not. But “the best sticker app” is rarely universal: a small, well-maintained pack with clear pricing and sensible privacy practices can be better than a massive catalog filled with ads or locked behind an aggressive subscription.
4. GIPHY Sticker Extension: best GIF-oriented candidate
Best for: reaction GIFs and animated visual replies.
GIPHY appears among notable iMessage-related listings in current U.S. app-ranking data, making it a reasonable GIF candidate. However, its exact product, developer, price, iOS requirement and Messages behavior should be checked in the current U.S. App Store before publication or installation. Confirm that the current version still provides a Messages extension rather than only a keyboard or share-sheet destination.
Use the official U.S. App Store search for GIPHY to locate the current listing. Availability can differ by country. GIF apps also deserve closer privacy and moderation scrutiny because they may include advertising, user-generated content, search histories or account requirements. Animated reactions are not appropriate for every workplace, school or family conversation.
5. Apple Music: best for sharing songs in context
Best for: sharing a song, album, playlist or music discovery while chatting.

Previews, playback and library features depend on the music service, subscription, region and whether the recipient has the relevant app. Groups using Spotify, YouTube Music or another service may prefer that service’s normal share option, but do not assume it has a current full iMessage extension.
6. SharePlay and collaboration: best for doing something together
Best for: watching, listening, exercising, gaming, planning or editing shared content while chatting.
Messages supports SharePlay through compatible apps, allowing activities such as synchronized media, workouts or games. Collaboration features can also provide updates for shared projects. Useful examples include shared Freeform boards, Notes, documents, Reminders and other planning workflows.
These are often more valuable than novelty mini-apps, but they are not always separately installed “iMessage apps.” Participants may need compatible Apple hardware, current software, the same app, an account or an active subscription. “Works with Messages” does not mean that every feature works on every Apple device.

Third-party packs make sense when you have a specific theme in mind. App-discovery sites list hundreds of sticker-related options, but catalog size and star ratings do not prove that an app is maintained, safe or still exposes a working Messages extension. Sticker.ly is one example that appears in third-party catalog coverage, not a blanket editorial recommendation.
Before downloading any sticker app, check:
- Whether it appears in the Messages + drawer as a genuine extension.
- Whether stickers are static, animated or user-created.
- How much useful content is available without payment.
- Whether the payment is one-time or recurring.
- The trial length, renewal price and billing frequency.
- The App Store privacy label, developer identity and account requirements.
- The latest update date and current iOS requirement.
- The age rating and the risk of accidental in-app purchases.
Some 2026 user discussions report unexpectedly expensive weekly sticker subscriptions, including examples around $15 per week. That is anecdotal, not a verified industry-wide price, but it is a good reason to inspect the purchase screen carefully before starting a trial.

Built-in Messages tools you may not need to download
Before browsing the Store, open Messages and tap +. Depending on your device, region and account, built-in or integrated tools can cover:
- Camera and photo or video sharing.
- Stickers, Memoji and emoji stickers.
- Audio messages.
- Polls.
- Location sharing and Maps-related actions.
- Notes, Freeform, Reminders and other collaboration workflows.
- Apple Cash where supported.
Apple lists regional limits for features including Apple Cash, so do not assume that a U.S. feature is available in every country. Messages is designed to work across Apple devices including iPhone, iPad, Mac, Apple Watch and Apple Vision Pro, but a particular extension or collaboration feature may have narrower compatibility. Add an app
- Open Messages and a conversation.
- Tap +.
- Tap Store.
- Select an app.
- Tap Get for a free app, or tap the displayed price for a paid app.
- Return to the conversation and open the app from the + menu.
Purchases use the payment method associated with your Apple Account. Prices and availability depend on your local App Store.
Reorder apps
- Open a conversation and tap +.
- Touch and hold an app icon until it shrinks.
- Drag it to the preferred position.
- Drag toward the top or bottom edge to move it to another page.
Labels and management controls can vary between iOS releases and devices. If an app is hidden, inspect additional pages and the More menu before reinstalling it.

Many iMessage extensions depend on a blue-bubble iMessage conversation. In an SMS, MMS or RCS thread, the extension may be unavailable, or it may fall back to an ordinary link or message without the interactive experience.
Both people do not universally need the same app: some extensions send content the recipient can view immediately, while others require the recipient to install the app. Requirements vary by app, device and current version. For GamePigeon, the practical advice is to use an iMessage conversation and install it before beginning a game. Do not expect the same experience when the recipient uses Android or the thread is not using iMessage.
Pricing, privacy and family-safety checks
Do not confuse “free” with free to use
GamePigeon is free to download but includes optional purchases. Sticker and GIF apps may offer free downloads while locking useful content behind trials or subscriptions. Before confirming a purchase, check the trial duration, renewal price, billing interval and what remains usable after cancellation.

Review privacy separately for every extension
An extension appearing inside Messages does not automatically inherit Apple’s privacy protections. Check the app’s App Store privacy label, developer, data collection, account requirements and content policies. This matters especially for GIF and sticker services that search or host user-generated material.
Use purchase controls for children
GamePigeon’s U.S. listing shows a 13+ age rating and includes in-app purchases. Families should compare the App Store age rating with the child’s age and use Screen Time or purchase restrictions where appropriate. Also review recurring subscriptions immediately after any free trial is started.
How these recommendations were judged
The useful question is not which app has the highest historical rating or the largest catalog. A better comparison weighs:

App-ranking pages can help with discovery, but they are not substitutes for checking the current App Store listing, privacy disclosures, pricing and iOS compatibility. Historical catalog counts likewise do not represent the number of currently usable iMessage apps.
Final recommendations
Choose GamePigeon for casual games, Apple Polls for group decisions, and built-in Stickers and Memoji for dependable reactions without another subscription. Consider GIPHY for GIFs only after confirming its current Messages-extension behavior and local pricing. For users who want to watch, listen, plan or edit together, SharePlay and collaboration tools are more useful than a long list of novelty extensions.
For many iPhone owners, the best iMessage app is no download at all: iOS 26’s built-in Messages tools already handle the most common jobs.
