“Hummingbird” is usually a misspelling of Humminbird. The products below are multifunction fish finders, not all depth-only instruments. Your best choice depends on whether you need simple 2D depth, Side Imaging, GPS mapping, live sonar, or an ice-fishing flasher.

Choose the CMSI+ configuration when Side Imaging and Down Imaging should be ready from the box. The similarly named XPLORE 9 CHO is “control head only”: it generally does not include a transducer. That lower sticker price is useful if you already own a compatible transducer, but misleading if you do not.
Best value: HELIX 7 SI GPS G4
The HELIX 7 SI GPS G4 gives a small-boat angler GPS, Side Imaging and Down Imaging at a much lower manufacturer-listed price than XPLORE. Physical buttons work well with wet hands and gloves, and the 7-inch screen is a practical compromise for a console or kayak. The trade-off is a button-driven, older-generation interface and less flexibility for advanced networked systems. The MSI and G4N variants add capability and networking, but check the exact transducer and bundle contents before paying more.
Best for basic depth and GPS: HELIX 5 CHIRP GPS G3
If your real requirement is reliable vertical depth, bottom return and occasional waypoints, a HELIX 5 CHIRP GPS G3 is more sensible than buying a flagship. CHIRP 2D sonar is the foundational view for depth and fish arches. Its 5-inch screen is cramped for maps and split views, and configurations vary in whether Down Imaging or a transducer is included. It is also a different product from a live-sonar system.

APEX is for a large boat or a chartplotter-centered helm where screen area and integration matter. Current APEX sizes include 13, 16 and 19 inches; listed U.S. prices were approximately $3,399.99 to $4,699.99 by size and configuration. Applicable models support HDMI, radar, AIS, NMEA 2000, MEGA Live and One-Boat Network equipment. Best for live sonar: XPLORE + MEGA Live 2
MEGA Live 2 is forward- or down-facing real-time sonar: it can show fish, structure and lure movement as they happen. It is not a substitute for ordinary depth sonar. The standalone transducer was listed at $1,599.99, while XPLORE bundles started around $2,899.98 in the supplied catalog. Budget for the transducer mount, Ethernet and power wiring, a compatible control head and installation time. If you mainly fish while stationary and need only depth, Side Imaging or bottom contours, this is unnecessary expense. Details are on the official bundle page.
Best for ice fishing: ICE HELIX 5 CHIRP GPS G3
The ICE HELIX 5 package is designed around portability, a shuttle, battery and flasher-style operation. Confirm whether a listing is the standard, all-season, FB or AS configuration: battery, case, shuttle and transducer contents can differ. Advanced anglers can choose an ICE XPLORE plus MEGA Live 2 bundle, listed from roughly $2,849.99 to $3,499.99, but that is a specialist setup rather than a casual-ice value.
HELIX vs XPLORE vs SOLIX vs APEX
- HELIX: choose it below roughly $1,000, when buttons, compact mounting and value matter more than the newest interface. G4 and G4N suffixes affect networking and included capabilities.
- XPLORE: the current touchscreen-oriented middle ground for mapping, waypoints, imaging and future MEGA Live 2 expansion. Displays are 9, 10.1 and 12.1 inches.
- SOLIX: a premium, highly configurable touchscreen choice, especially for existing SOLIX G3 owners and networked Minn Kota/Humminbird systems.
- APEX: the large-screen, chartplotter-first option for radar, AIS, HDMI, NMEA 2000 and multi-display installations.
Humminbird’s family overview and suffix guide are useful because generations and package contents are not interchangeable.

Sonar terms that affect the buying decision
- 2D CHIRP: the traditional cone-shaped beam for depth, bottom and fish arches directly below the boat.
- Down Imaging (DI): a picture-like view beneath the boat.
- Side Imaging (SI): scans to both sides while the boat moves; it is not a replacement for vertical sonar when stopped.
- MEGA SI+/DI+: Humminbird’s high-frequency imaging modes. They are complementary to, not interchangeable with, MEGA Live 2.
- MEGA Live 2: real-time forward or down sonar for watching fish and lure interaction.
- GPS and chartplotter: position, tracks, routes and waypoints. Included LakeMaster/CoastMaster maps do not guarantee detailed coverage of every lake or coastal region; verify your location and map version.
- Flasher mode: a fast circular/vertical display especially useful for ice fishing.
Advertised depth is mode- and transducer-specific. Water clarity, sediment, bottom composition, boat speed, turbulence, frequency, cone angle and electrical noise all affect usable results. Humminbird describes MEGA+ imaging capability up to 250 feet in the relevant context; do not treat that figure as a universal maximum for every model or sonar mode. Choose the transducer before checkout
A display and transducer are a system. A transom-mounted unit suits many outboards; a trolling-motor transducer is convenient for bow fishing; a through-hull installation can be clean on a larger boat; ice packages use portable flasher transducers; MEGA Live 2 uses its own live-sonar transducer and mount.
Check the listing for “CHO,” included transducer model, power cable, mount, Ethernet hardware and mapping card. A compatible plug does not guarantee that an older transducer unlocks every 2D, DI, SI, MEGA or live-sonar feature. Use Humminbird’s compatibility spreadsheet and exact model number.
Installation and setup checklist
- Measure console space, viewing distance, glare and available electrical capacity before selecting screen size.
- Mount the transducer clear of hull turbulence, trim tabs and trolling-motor interference; keep it submerged and correctly aligned.
- Use an adequately fused power circuit and secure every connector against water.
- Update software over Wi-Fi before diagnosing networking or interface behavior; Humminbird documents update support for XPLORE, APEX and SOLIX G3.
- Select the correct sonar source, wait for GPS acquisition and confirm the map covers your lake or coast.
- Test depth, imaging and waypoints on the water at different speeds before relying on the installation.
Common problems and fixes
No depth reading
Confirm power and the transducer plug, check that the transducer is submerged and oriented correctly, reduce aerated water, select the correct sonar source, and verify that a CHO unit has a compatible transducer attached.

Poor Side Imaging
Slow the boat, inspect alignment and remove obstructions or interference from the hull, trim tabs and trolling motor. Image range is not automatically the same as reliable search distance in every depth or water condition.

GPS or map issue
Check satellite reception, card insertion and map compatibility, then update unit and chart data. Confirm that your lake or coastal region is actually covered.
MEGA Live 2 missing
Check power and Ethernet, update firmware, confirm the control head is a compatible XPLORE, APEX or SOLIX G3, and select the live-sonar source.
Existing transducer lacks expected features
Check the transducer’s supported modes in the compatibility table. Connector compatibility alone does not provide full feature compatibility.

Buy the XPLORE 9 CMSI+ for the best balance of current features and future expansion. Pick the HELIX 7 SI GPS G4 when value and physical buttons matter, the HELIX 5 for basic depth, APEX for a premium networked helm, and ICE HELIX for portable ice fishing. Before ordering, verify the exact suffix, transducer, map coverage and total installed cost—not just the display price.

Is HELIX or XPLORE better?
HELIX is usually the better value below about $1,000 and uses buttons. XPLORE is better when touchscreen controls, current mapping, networking and MEGA Live 2 expansion matter.
Do Humminbird fish finders include a transducer?
Some bundles do and CHO models generally do not. Check the exact model number and included transducer; an existing compatible connector may still lack support for desired sonar modes.
Is MEGA Live 2 worth it?
It is worthwhile for anglers who actively use forward-facing, real-time sonar. It is poor value if you only need depth, bottom contours or occasional fish finding.
What screen size should I buy?
Five inches suits basic depth and GPS, seven inches is a practical value size, nine inches is a strong general-purpose choice, and 10–12 inches or larger helps with split views and live sonar.
Do I need a map card?
Not always. XPLORE listings include LakeMaster and CoastMaster mapping, but coverage and detail vary. Verify your specific lake, coastal region and chart version; premium cards may still add useful detail.
