Short answer: The Huawei P60 Pro was the best Huawei phone a U.S. importer could choose in 2023, especially for photography and premium hardware. The Huawei Mate 50 Pro was the better discounted alternative, while the nova 11 Pro suited buyers focused on design and selfies. However, none was a normal U.S. phone purchase: the relevant global models lacked official Google Mobile Services, used 4G rather than 5G, had uncertain carrier compatibility, and could have no practical U.S. warranty.
This is therefore a ranking of imported Huawei devices—not a claim that Huawei offered the best phones sold through ordinary American retail channels.
Before buying any Huawei phone in the United States
Most 2023 Huawei phones were encountered by U.S. buyers through importers, gray-market retailers, or used-device marketplaces rather than conventional U.S. retail. A listing can be a genuine global model, a China-region phone with modified firmware, a refurbished device, or a handset with a misleading “global ROM” description. Confirm the exact model number, firmware region, network bands, warranty market, and return policy before paying.

- Warranty and repair risk: Huawei says warranty coverage varies by country and product. An imported handset may need service in its original sales market; read the country-specific warranty provisions.
Best Huawei phones for U.S. importers in 2023
1. Huawei P60 Pro — best overall and best Huawei camera phone
Best for: Photography enthusiasts who want Huawei’s strongest 2023 flagship hardware and can tolerate software and network compromises.
The P60 Pro was Huawei’s 2023 global flagship. Its P-series identity centered on photography: Huawei promoted the XMAGE imaging system, XD Optics, low-light performance, and a variable-aperture main camera on the official P60 Pro product page. - Why choose it: Best Huawei camera package, premium display and design, strong all-round hardware.
- What you give up: No official Google Mobile Services, no 5G on the relevant global configuration, uncertain U.S. carrier behavior, and no simple U.S. warranty path.
- Skip it if: You depend on Google Wallet, Android Auto, banking authentication, guaranteed push notifications, or reliable 5G.
2. Huawei Mate 50 Pro — best discounted premium alternative
Best for: Buyers who value face unlock, charging, battery capacity, and a premium design, especially when the phone costs substantially less than a P60 Pro.
The Mate 50 Pro launched in 2022 but remained one of Huawei’s principal high-end options during 2023. Huawei’s cited global DCO-LX9 specification lists a 4,700mAh battery, 66W wired Huawei SuperCharge, 50W wireless charging, and LTE bands including 2, 4, 5, 12, 13, and 66, among others. 3. Huawei nova 11 Pro — best for selfies and Huawei design at a lower tier
Best for: A Huawei loyalist who prioritizes slim styling, front-camera photography, and fast charging over maximum performance or U.S. convenience.
The nova 11 Pro occupied a lower tier than the P and Mate flagships, with a design- and selfie-oriented proposition. Huawei’s global product support list and regional device listings identify the nova 11 family, but buyers must verify the exact market configuration.
It remains an imported 4G phone without official Google Mobile Services. Compare its landed cost with an officially sold U.S. midrange phone: once shipping, taxes, a case, charger, and potential repair costs are included, the nova 11 Pro may offer little practical value unless its Huawei-specific design or camera experience is the reason for buying.
4. Huawei P50 Pro — older camera alternative
The P50 Pro can make sense only as a used or heavily discounted Huawei camera phone. It is older than the P60 Pro and carries the same Google-services problem, plus the normal risks of an imported used handset: battery wear, uncertain repair history, missing accessories, region firmware, and carrier activation failures. A lower price alone does not make it a low-risk purchase.

5. Huawei Mate X3 — best specialist foldable
The Mate X3 is the distinctive choice for someone specifically seeking Huawei’s foldable form factor. It is not the best general recommendation for a U.S. buyer because of high import cost, software limitations, uncertain service, and regional network differences. Treat it as a specialist secondary or enthusiast device rather than a dependable primary phone.

Choose the P60 Pro when the camera advantage matters most. Choose the Mate 50 Pro when it is meaningfully cheaper and its charging or face-unlock features matter more than having the newest model.
Google apps: what “no Google support” actually means
“No Google apps” does not mean that every Google website is inaccessible. Gmail, YouTube, Maps, and other services may be usable in a browser. The critical distinction is that the phone does not officially provide Google Mobile Services: Play Store, Play Services, Google location APIs, account integration, and the dependencies many Android apps expect.
Third-party app stores, app containers, microG-based tools, or sideloaded APKs may install some applications, but they are not equivalent to official support. Common failure modes include:
- An app installs but will not open because it requires Google Play Services.
- Google sign-in loops or push notifications arrive late.
- Banking, payment, authentication, or games reject the device’s integrity status.
- Location functions are incomplete, Android Auto does not work, or an operating-system update breaks the workaround.
Treat every workaround as experimental and app-specific. Do not buy a Huawei phone assuming that a “Google installer” will restore a normal Android experience.

Will an imported Huawei phone work on a U.S. carrier?
There is no carrier-wide yes or no. Compatibility depends on the exact model number, firmware region, LTE bands, VoLTE provisioning, IMEI policy, and the carrier’s current network deployment. Huawei notes that live-network functions depend on the carrier’s network and service.
Verification checklist
- Obtain the complete model number from the seller, not just “P60 Pro” or “Mate 50 Pro.”
- Confirm whether it is a genuine global model or a China-region phone with modified firmware.
- Compare its LTE bands with the intended carrier’s current requirements.
- Run the IMEI through the carrier’s official compatibility checker before the return period expires.
- Ask specifically about VoLTE, SMS, hotspot, Wi-Fi calling, emergency calling, and SIM behavior.
- Confirm the phone is unlocked and that the seller accepts returns if activation fails.
Matching bands is necessary but not sufficient. Do not generalize from an anecdote saying that one imported Huawei phone worked on one MVNO. A carrier can reject an IMEI, fail to provision VoLTE, or change policy later. A 4G-only phone will not gain 5G merely by using a 5G SIM.
Global EMUI versus China-market HarmonyOS

Do not assume that a listing’s “global ROM” is an official global device. Firmware conversion or rebranding can create update, security, language, and banking problems. Verify the model and software region in the phone’s settings and packaging, and use Huawei’s counterfeit-avoidance guidance when checking a seller.

- People who need straightforward U.S. warranty and repair support.
Safer alternatives for most U.S. buyers
If the real requirement is a dependable American daily driver, an officially supported Google Pixel, Samsung Galaxy, or iPhone is usually the better purchase. These alternatives provide clearer carrier support, 5G, app compatibility, accessories, repairs, and resale. Choose Huawei only when its camera character, design, or foldable hardware is worth accepting the ecosystem and import risks.
