Macs Fan Control is the best free choice for straightforward manual fan control. Choose TG Pro for advanced thermal diagnostics, alerts, and logs; iStat Menus 7 for broad menu-bar monitoring with fan controls; and Stats for free open-source monitoring, not current fan control.
Results vary by Mac model, Intel versus Apple silicon, macOS version, and whether the Mac has a fan at all. This guide was checked against the vendors’ current information on August 18, 2026; versions, pricing, and compatibility can change.

Macs Fan Control is the clearest recommendation when the main job is changing fan speed without paying for a larger monitoring suite. The official site lists version 1.5.21, support for macOS 10.13 High Sierra and later, and compatibility with Intel and Apple-silicon Macs.

It can show live fan RPM and temperature sensors, set a fan to a fixed RPM, or link fan speed to a selected sensor. Presets make it easier to switch between quieter everyday operation and a more aggressive profile for sustained workloads. When the app quits, it says it returns the fans to Apple’s automatic mode.
That last behavior makes it a sensible starting point, but it is not a guarantee of identical control on every Mac. The vendor warns that some Sonoma and Sequoia builds imposed firmware restrictions affecting manual control on certain MacBooks. If your model refuses a custom speed, use automatic mode rather than repeatedly forcing the setting.
Basic setup
- Download the app from the official site, or install it with Homebrew:
brew install --cask macs-fan-control- Open the app and select a fan.
- Choose Custom for a fixed RPM or Sensor Based for temperature-linked behavior.
- Save a preset if you need repeatable profiles.
- Choose Auto when you want Apple’s built-in fan management again.
Best premium option: TG Pro
TG Pro is the better choice when fan speed is only one part of the problem. It combines fan control with extensive temperature readings, threshold-based automatic rules, local and email alerts, logging, battery-health information, and diagnostics for components such as drives and the logic board where supported.

It also lists native support for Intel and Apple-silicon Macs, including M1 through M5 families.
Control options depend on the Mac. TG Pro’s guide explains that older Intel models generally expose Manual control more readily, while some newer Intel and Apple-silicon Macs may initially offer Max mode until Manual control is enabled in settings. Do not assume that an M-series support claim means every model exposes identical fixed-RPM or curve controls.

TG Pro is sold as a one-time license. The vendor page displayed a promotional price of US$10, marked as 50% off a stated US$20 price, when checked on August 18, 2026. Treat that as a dated promotion rather than a permanent price. The vendor also states that the app uses a dedicated secure service for fan control and contains no tracking code or analytics.
Best menu-bar monitor: iStat Menus 7
iStat Menus 7 is the strongest fit if you want a detailed menu-bar dashboard rather than a fan-only utility. It monitors CPU and GPU activity, memory pressure and swap, storage, network traffic, battery information, Bluetooth devices, weather, fans, and many sensor categories.

That makes it useful for someone editing video, running virtual machines, rendering 3D scenes, or managing a Mac mini or Mac Studio in a warm or enclosed setup while also wanting broad system statistics.
Bjango currently lists iStat Menus 7.3 for macOS 11 or later and offers a 14-day free trial. It is also available through Setapp, which the vendor lists at US$9.99 per month when checked. App Store pricing is regional: the Canadian listing showed C$14.99 at the time of checking, so it should not be treated as a universal US price.
Distribution can matter for low-level controls. The direct-download and App Store editions may not expose identical functionality because sandboxing and privileged-helper requirements can affect hardware access. An App Store review reports missing features compared with the website version; that is a user report, not proof of a universal limitation. Check the edition’s feature list before buying if fan control is essential.

Best free open-source monitor: Stats
Stats is a useful free, open-source menu-bar monitor under the MIT license. It offers modules for CPU, GPU, memory, disks, network, battery, sensors, and fan-related readings, and supports macOS 12 Monterey and newer.
It should not be the main recommendation for controlling fans. The project explicitly describes fan control as a legacy feature that receives no updates or fixes. Stats is therefore attractive for observing the system, but not a current, supported solution for custom fan curves.
Install it from the project’s official repository or with:
brew install statsStats installs an SMC helper for some functions. Its documented uninstall command requires administrator privileges:
sh /Applications/Stats.app/Contents/Resources/Scripts/uninstall.shOn Apple silicon, do not interpret every sensor label as one physical sensor per CPU core. The project notes that labels can represent thermal sensors or zones, and Apple changes sensor keys between SoC generations.

Core Monitor and older utilities
Core Monitor is an emerging free, open-source alternative aimed particularly at Apple-silicon monitoring. Its direct-download build includes optional fan control, while its Mac App Store build does not. That distribution difference is important: install the direct version only if fan control is the feature you need.
Because compatibility and maintenance can change quickly, treat Core Monitor as a secondary or experimental option rather than a default recommendation. Verify its support for your exact Mac and macOS release before relying on it.
Older tools such as smcFanControl may appear in long-standing comparison articles, but they should be treated as historical or limited Intel-era alternatives unless current compatibility and maintenance are verified. They are not leading recommendations for a modern Intel-and-Apple-silicon guide.
Monitoring is not fan control
A Mac utility can provide several different capabilities:
- Monitoring: displays temperatures, fan RPM, processor or graphics load, power, and other readings.
- Manual control: sets a fixed fan speed or RPM.
- Automatic control: changes speed according to a sensor, threshold, or curve.
- Diagnostics: records readings, sends alerts, and helps identify abnormal hardware behavior.
These are not interchangeable. Stats can be a strong monitor even though its current fan control is unsupported. iStat Menus can be the best overall dashboard without being the simplest fan-control tool. TG Pro’s value is largely its diagnostics and alerts, while Macs Fan Control is strongest when direct control is the only priority.

Intel versus Apple silicon
Older Intel Macs generally expose more fan and SMC controls. T2-equipped Intel models can impose additional security or firmware constraints. Apple-silicon Macs expose different sensors and may provide less granular low-level control, even when an app supports Apple silicon for monitoring.
Support can mean temperature display only, fan-RPM display, a maximum-speed command, fixed-RPM control, or a custom sensor curve. Ask which of those your exact model supports rather than relying on a simple “works with M1” or “works with Apple silicon” label.
Fanless MacBook Air models cannot be made to spin fans they do not have. A monitoring app may still show useful system information, but fan-speed recommendations do not apply.

How to control Mac fan speed safely
- Check the workload first. Open Activity Monitor and look for a process using sustained CPU or GPU resources. Video calls, browser tabs, virtualization, gaming, rendering, indexing, and system updates can all produce expected heat.
- Check airflow. Keep a MacBook on a hard surface, clear vents, avoid enclosed cabinets, and consider ambient temperature. Inspect dust and external enclosures or docks if the problem started after a hardware change.
- Install from an official source. Prefer the developer’s download page. Some utilities require a privileged helper because fan control interacts with low-level hardware; grant only the permissions the app actually requests.
- Remove competing utilities. Two fan-control helpers can fight over the same controls. Disable or uninstall older fan tools before testing a new one.
- Start in monitoring mode. Confirm that the displayed fans and sensors respond plausibly before changing speed.
- Use Apple Auto as the baseline. If you create a profile, prefer a conservative sensor-based curve over a permanently high fixed RPM.
- Test your real workload. A short spike is not the same as an hour of rendering or virtualization. Watch temperature, fan response, noise, and performance together.
- Return to Auto if behavior is unexpected. Quit the app, select Auto where available, and reboot if necessary.
There is no universal safe RPM or temperature curve. The correct setting depends on the Mac, sensor location, number of fans, workload, ambient temperature, and whether you value lower noise or more aggressive cooling. A higher fan speed may reduce temperature or delay throttling, but it also increases noise and power use and does not fix every performance bottleneck.
Why a Mac may be hot or loud
Changing the fan curve is not always the right answer. Investigate a runaway process, blocked airflow, dust, a failing temperature sensor, a failing fan, a replacement SSD or hard drive, a poor-quality dock or external enclosure, high ambient temperature, or a battery and power issue.
If the Mac is hot but quiet, it may be fanless, power-limited, reading a different sensor than the one you are watching, or operating within Apple’s intended thermal range. A displayed temperature is not directly comparable between apps unless both are reading the same sensor and using the same interpretation.
Do not use a utility to conceal a failed fan, sensor, drive, or battery. Persistent loud fan behavior in Apple Auto mode, unexplained throttling, sensor errors, or physical noises are reasons to investigate hardware and consider professional service.
Troubleshooting manual fan control
- Quit the fan-control app and confirm that fans return to automatic control.
- Reboot the Mac.
- Check Activity Monitor for sustained CPU or GPU usage.
- Update the utility to the newest version compatible with your macOS release.
- Disable or remove competing fan utilities and privileged helpers.
- Test the app in monitoring-only mode.
- If manual control fails, use the app’s automatic mode or Apple Auto mode.
- If fans remain loud in Auto, investigate airflow, dust, sensors, battery health, storage devices, and hardware service.
Manual control can fail after a macOS update because of firmware restrictions, an unsupported model, a missing helper, App Store sandboxing, or a change in the app’s operating mode. Macs Fan Control specifically documents restrictions affecting manual control on some MacBooks running certain Sonoma and Sequoia builds.
