For most homes, buy a pure-copper Cat6 Ethernet patch cable in the shortest length that reaches comfortably. It is inexpensive, works well for gigabit and most 2.5Gbps connections, and avoids paying for Cat7 or Cat8 ratings that typical home equipment cannot use. Choose Cat6A if you specifically need 10Gbps over a longer run or have a demanding installation.

Quick choice: Select Cat6 UTP for ordinary router, modem, computer, console, switch, or access-point connections. Select Cat6A when the network actually calls for 10Gbps over a longer distance. Buy from a seller that clearly states conductor material and the exact cable variant.

Cat6 is a sensible new-purchase choice for gigabit service and most home 2.5Gbps links. A cable category alone cannot guarantee a particular link speed, but a correctly made, undamaged Cat6 patch cable is ample for many residential connections. Check the product page for the exact length, style, and current price: the listing’s variants and prices can change.
Best for: Most users. Trade-off: If you need a specific length or color immediately, verify that exact variant is in stock; the product family page is not a promise that every SKU is available.
2. Belkin Cat6: best mainstream-brand alternative
The Belkin Cat6 snagless cable is a good alternative if you want clearly stated specifications and a recognized consumer-electronics brand. Best for: A short patch cable from a mainstream brand, especially when warranty coverage matters. Trade-off: It may cost more than a comparable basic cable, and the same product family can include differently priced lengths and variants.
3. Monoprice Cat6A: best targeted upgrade for 10Gbps
For a network built around 10GBase-T, consider a Cat6A cable such as Monoprice product 5901. The manufacturer lists this model as shielded (STP), pure bare copper, 26AWG, and intended for 10G. Cat6A is designed for 10Gbps Ethernet over longer distances than ordinary Cat6 under appropriate cabling and installation conditions.

A 7-foot version was listed at $8.39 in the available product information, but it was also marked out of stock with a future ETA. That makes it a specification to look for, not a guaranteed under-$20 purchase today. Confirm stock, exact length, and final price before selecting it; if unavailable, look for another reputable Cat6A patch cable with explicit pure-copper specifications.

Best for: Buyers with 10Gbps-capable ports who need the extra distance or margin Cat6A is intended to provide. Trade-off: Cat6A is often thicker and less flexible than Cat6, and the shield is not a universal benefit in a normal home.
4. Long cable under $20: choose by exact length
For a longer connection, compare standard round Cat6 or Cat6A options on Monoprice’s patch-cable page and confirm that the specific length stays below your budget. Its product range includes cables up to 100 feet, but price depends on length and series; a low starting price for a short cable does not establish the price of a long one.

A pre-made patch cable is suitable for a temporary route across a room or between nearby devices. For a permanent cable run inside walls, choose bulk cable with an appropriate jacket rating, install it with suitable jacks, and follow local requirements. A stranded patch cable is not a substitute for structured in-wall cabling.
Which Ethernet category should you buy?

Cat6 is enough for many 2.5Gbps home links when the cable and the rest of the connection are in good condition. Actual speed depends on both endpoints, port capability, termination quality, cable length and condition, and the network path—not just the category printed on the cable. Monoprice’s category comparison describes Cat6A as its 10GBase-T-oriented option and Cat8 as intended for specialized short 25GBase-T/40GBase-T applications.
A Cat8 cable will not increase your ISP plan speed, upgrade a 1Gbps router port, or make a slower computer adapter negotiate at 10Gbps. The connection is limited by the slowest capable component. A wired connection can be more stable than Wi-Fi, but a “gaming” label, gold-plated plug, or higher category does not guarantee lower ping; latency also depends on the router, ISP, route, server distance, and congestion.

Cat6 versus Cat6A
Choose Cat6 when the cable will connect ordinary home equipment and you want a flexible, inexpensive patch lead. Choose Cat6A when you have 10Gbps equipment and need a longer high-speed channel, or when your installation plan calls for that extra performance margin. The difference is not a general boost to every network: if your ports negotiate at 1Gbps, a Cat6A cable will not change that.
Cat6A’s extra bulk can make it harder to route neatly behind furniture. Shielded Cat6A may be useful in electrically noisy environments, but shielding only provides its intended benefit when the rest of the cabling system is appropriate. A quality UTP cable is usually the simpler choice in a typical living room or home office.
What to check before you buy
- Conductor material: Prefer pure bare copper or bare stranded copper. Avoid copper-clad aluminum (CCA) for demanding or permanent installations; it is not equivalent to pure copper. Monoprice explains its pure-copper positioning on its networking cables page.
- Exact length: Measure the route, not just the straight-line distance, then allow a little slack for bends and device movement. Common desk and console connections often need 5–10 feet; routes across a room may need 15–25 feet. These are planning examples, not rules.
- Patch cable or in-wall cable: For a modem, router, PC, console, or switch, a flexible stranded male-to-male RJ45 patch cable is normally right. Permanent wall runs need suitable bulk cable, jacket rating, and terminations.
- UTP or shielded: UTP is appropriate for most homes. Consider shielding near substantial interference sources, but do not assume a shielded lead fixes a poor or incompatible cabling system.
- Shape and durability: Round cable is a robust general-purpose choice. Flat or slim versions can be easier to route through tight spaces, but avoid crushing them or bending them sharply. Snagless boots help protect connector tabs; they do not improve speed.
- PoE use: For cameras or access points powered over Ethernet, use a clearly specified quality cable and check the device’s power and distance requirements. Avoid questionable CCA or ultra-thin cables for demanding PoE runs.
- Connector terminology: Consumer listings usually say RJ45; a standard patch cable is the familiar 8P8C modular connector, male at both ends. Check that it is not a coupler, wall jack, or specialty cable.
What not to pay extra for
- Cat7 or Cat8 labels alone: The rating does not help if the network devices cannot use it. For typical home RJ45 connections, Cat6 is usually the sensible value and Cat6A is the targeted 10Gbps upgrade.
- “Gaming” claims: A properly functioning Ethernet connection can help avoid Wi-Fi variability, but the cable branding itself does not lower latency.
- Gold-plated contacts as a speed feature: Gold plating is not a speed upgrade. Prioritize category, conductor material, fit, and condition.
- Shielding without a reason: More shielding can mean more stiffness and installation considerations; it is not automatically better in a normal home.
- Excess length: Do not stretch a lead tightly or run it where it creates a trip hazard. Buy enough for a safe route, not a large coil of unused cable.
If your Ethernet link is stuck at 100Mbps or keeps dropping
A cable or connector fault can cause a link to negotiate at 100Mbps, but a 100Mbps port, bad wall jack, coupler, setting, or device can do the same. Isolate the pieces before replacing hardware:

- Check the negotiated link speed in the computer’s network settings or the switch/router interface. Confirm that both connected ports support the speed you expect.
- Try the suspect cable with another known-good port or device, changing one item at a time.
- Inspect both plugs for damaged contacts or broken latch tabs, and look for sharp bends, crushing, or strain near the connector.
- If the direct test still negotiates at 100Mbps or disconnects, replace the patch cable. If the problem remains with a known-good cable, investigate the port, endpoint, or in-wall wiring.
Intermittent drops can come from a loose plug, a failing port, a poor wall termination, or unusual interference as well as a damaged cable. Replacing the cable is a useful test, not proof that the cable was the cause.
