If you want to back up a WordPress site to Dropbox, UpdraftPlus and BackWPup are two documented options. Both support Dropbox as backup storage, but their restore and migration features differ by plan. The available product information does not establish a universal winner, and “Dropbox support” here means storing site backups—not using Dropbox as a WordPress media library.
What Dropbox support means in these WordPress plugins
The documented use case is sending WordPress backups to Dropbox, with related backup and restore workflows. The available sources do not establish that either plugin turns Dropbox into a browsable media library, synchronizes media-library files, or lets you edit Dropbox files from WordPress. If those are your requirements, verify them separately rather than assuming backup support covers them.

BackWPup’s listing identifies direct restores from cloud destinations, encryption, migration, and some destinations as Pro features. Check whether your recovery plan depends on any of those capabilities before relying on the free tier: BackWPup on WordPress.org.
Choose by the recovery workflow you need
- Choose based on destination and schedule: Confirm that the version you plan to use supports the destinations and scheduled or manual backup workflow your site needs.
- Check what “restore” entails: Determine whether recovery requires downloading a backup archive and uploading it yourself, or whether a paid direct-cloud restore feature is available and necessary for your workflow.
- Decide whether you need more than a Dropbox copy: BackWPup’s free listing allows one job to write to multiple destinations. Consider whether keeping a separate copy is useful for your recovery plan.
- Review premium-only functions: Compare the specific restore, migration, encryption, incremental-backup, or cross-plugin functions you need against the relevant plan’s current feature list.
Set up Dropbox carefully and keep the integration current

UpdraftPlus changelog entry 1.26.8, dated September 17, 2026, describes a narrow credential-access concern involving a migrated site where an .htaccess file was not updated to the new site reference, a notice was not acted upon, non-admin dashboard users were present, and storage credentials had been saved. The entry says Dropbox credentials were not accessible in that described issue; it should not be read as a claim that all versions or Dropbox integrations share the problem. Verify that a backup can actually be recovered
A successful upload only shows that a backup was stored; it does not establish that the site can be restored from it. Check the plugin’s backup log, understand the archive-based or direct-cloud recovery steps for your plan, and, where practical, retain an independent copy. Treat these as prudent checks, not as evidence that either plugin has been tested here. BackWPup’s WordPress.org page includes individual user accounts of automation problems and support resolutions; those reviews are anecdotes, not an independent reliability study.

Which plugin should you use?
For a straightforward WordPress-to-Dropbox backup workflow, both UpdraftPlus and BackWPup have official documentation naming Dropbox as a destination. Base your choice on the restore path, plan limits, and whether you want a job to write to multiple destinations—not on an unsupported claim of superior reliability. Neither plugin’s documented Dropbox backup support, by itself, establishes Dropbox media-library synchronization or file editing.
