It is light, relatively easy to control and has well-documented limits: 87 g, up to 13 minutes of flight, 100 m maximum distance, 8 m/s top speed, 5 MP photos and 720p30 video. For children or indoor practice, the Holy Stone HS210 and Potensic A20 are simpler toy-scale alternatives. If GPS and outdoor features matter more than camera quality, consider the Holy Stone HS175D—but treat its “4K” label cautiously because the guide reports native recording at 2.7K.
Best drones under $100 at a glance
| Drone | Best for | Key documented details | Main limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ryze Tello | Most beginners and casual flying | About $99 in a 2026 comparison; 87 g; 13-minute maximum flight; 100 m maximum distance; 8 m/s maximum speed; 30 m maximum height; 5 MP photos; 720p30 video | Short flight time and basic, non-professional imaging |

1. Ryze Tello: the best general beginner choice
The Tello is the strongest default recommendation when your budget tops out at $100. A 2026 comparison places it at about $99, while Ryze Technology’s specifications provide unusually clear limits for a low-cost drone.
What you get
- Weight: 87 g.
- Flight time: up to 13 minutes under the manufacturer’s stated conditions.
- Distance and speed: maximum flight distance of 100 m and maximum speed of 8 m/s.
- Height: maximum 30 m.
- Camera: 5 MP still photos and 720p video at 30 frames per second.
Those figures describe a learning and casual-flying aircraft, not a replacement for a stabilized camera drone. Expect the best results in good light and in calm conditions, and plan around the short flight ceiling and battery endurance.
Who should buy it
- First-time pilots who want a controllable introduction to drone movements.
- Adults or older children flying under supervision in a clear, permitted area.
- Owners who value a documented product specification more than headline camera numbers.
Who should choose something else
Choose a protected mini-drone instead if your priority is indoor bump resistance or very young pilots. Choose a GPS-equipped model if outdoor position assistance and return-to-home are more important than a compact learning platform.
#1 Best Overall
- Drone with 1080P Camera: A camera mounted on it can be manually adjusted to see what's in front of the drone while it's flying, or it can be aimed down to see what's directly below it. I'm sure you can take some interesting photos & videos, or even use it to inspect the roof of a house or other hard-to-reach areas. Friends can shoot each other skating & capture really cool videos. Please charge the product using the provided charging cable. Before using this item, make sure to fully charge it.
- Play Longer: The FPV drone has two rechargeable batteries, each providing approximately 12 minutes of flight time. 2 batteries can be swapped & charged in rotation, greatly extending the fun time. Note that more flips & faster speeds will reduce the flight time per battery
- Remote Control & App: You can fly the mini drone with remote control or a smart phone. But in order to capture video or images, you must be connected to the drone via WiFi & the ''Hiturbo FPV'' app. If you need to use the voice control, trajectory flight & other functions which under the ''control switch'' button in the app, you need to disconnect the remote control from the drone, connect the drone with the app individually.
- Discover new adventures: 2 batteries provide you with up to 24 minutes of flying experience. Features such as altitude hold, 3D flip, headless mode, one key take off/landing, speed adjustment & voice control make it easy & fun for beginners or novices.
- Suitable for Beginners: This drone is a little easier to operate than other drones (it has fewer steps to fly, no manual pairing required), so it's suitable for people just starting out. If you're considering learning how to fly a drone, make this drone your first one. You'll be surprised at how easy it is to take your imagination to the next level with this starter drone
2. Holy Stone HS210 and Potensic A20: best for kids and indoor practice
Digital Camera World identifies the Holy Stone HS210 and the similar Potensic A20 as suitable inexpensive choices for children and beginners. Their appeal is simplicity: toy-scale aircraft, straightforward controls and protection that is more practical for indoor learning than a larger camera drone.
What to compare before buying
- Controller feel: check whether the transmitter layout is comfortable for the intended pilot.
- Propeller protection: guards reduce the consequences of contact with walls and furniture, but do not make a flight area safe by themselves.
- Spare batteries: confirm that replacement packs are sold separately and note charging time.
- Returns and support: verify the seller’s return window, replacement-part availability and warranty in your region.
These models make sense for short indoor sessions, learning throttle and direction, and supervised first flights. They are not the right purchase if your main goal is GPS navigation or high-quality aerial footage.

3. Holy Stone HS175D: the budget outdoor feature option
The HS175D is the more feature-oriented choice for outdoor use. Digital Camera World’s guide reports GPS, return-to-home, altitude hold, one-key takeoff and landing, and follow-me functionality, along with a reported 500 m range.
Published specifications to interpret carefully
- Weight: 215 g.
- Camera: 12 MP stills and 2.7K video in the cited guide.
- Battery claim: 23-minute batteries, as reported by that guide; confirm whether the listing means maximum per battery, total bundle runtime or another measurement.
- Range: 500 m reported maximum; real usable distance depends on interference, visibility, local rules and the controller.
Listings may call the camera “4K,” but the cited buying guide reports 2.7K video. Treat the native recording specification—not the marketing label—as the meaningful comparison. Also verify the exact bundle, because battery count and accessories can change the value substantially.

How to choose a sub-$100 drone
Prioritize stability and control aids
Altitude hold, optical or vision positioning, one-key takeoff and landing, and propeller guards can make a first flight less frustrating. No aid replaces supervision, a clear flight area and practice.
Separate camera claims from recording reality
Look for native video resolution, still-photo resolution and where files are saved. A drone that records to a memory card is different from one that sends compressed video to a phone. Words such as “4K” should be checked against the stated sensor and recording mode.

Budget for endurance, not just the aircraft
Maximum flight time is usually a best-case figure. Check spare-battery price, charging method and charging time before ordering. Two affordable batteries can be more useful for practice than a larger headline range.
Check portability and weight
Weight affects carrying convenience and may affect registration or other operating requirements. The Tello is 87 g and the HS175D is 215 g, but you still need to confirm the rules for the location where you will fly.

Look for safety and after-sale support
- GPS and return-to-home can help an outdoor model recover from signal or battery problems, but they are not guaranteed collision avoidance.
- Low-battery warnings, geofencing behavior and failsafe settings vary by model.
- Replacement propellers, guards, batteries and chargers determine whether a cheap crash remains cheap.
- Confirm warranty coverage and the seller’s return policy before purchase.
Indoor versus outdoor use
For indoor practice
Use a small protected model such as the HS210 or A20 in a room free of people, pets, fans, fragile objects and loose curtains. Start at low altitude, keep the controller close and land when orientation becomes confusing.
For outdoor flights
The Tello can be used for casual outdoor learning in suitable conditions, while the HS175D adds GPS-oriented features. Fly only where permitted, maintain the required visual awareness and avoid wind that exceeds the aircraft’s practical capability.
Rules, registration and responsible flying
Registration and operating rules depend on your country, aircraft classification and where you fly. TechRadar’s guide notes that drones over 250 g generally attract registration requirements in its guidance, but that is not a universal legal rule. Confirm the current requirement with the aviation authority for your flight location before launch; weight alone does not answer every regulatory question.
- Check local airspace restrictions and no-fly zones.
- Keep people, roads, buildings and property clear according to local requirements.
- Use return-to-home only after setting an appropriate home point and checking its behavior.
- Land immediately if the battery warning appears, control becomes unreliable or conditions deteriorate.
What a $100 drone cannot realistically deliver
At this price, expect a learning tool, indoor toy or casual outdoor aircraft. Professional-grade stabilized video, long endurance, robust obstacle avoidance and reliable performance in difficult weather generally require a higher budget. A low price can still buy useful practice and fun, but it cannot turn basic hardware into a professional imaging platform.
