The best docking station for an HP Spectre depends on the exact model and its USB-C capabilities. For newer Intel Spectre x360 laptops with Thunderbolt 4 or USB4, the Plugable TBT4-UDZ is the strongest balanced choice. The HP Thunderbolt Dock 120W G4 is the better first-party option, while an HP USB-C Dock G4 or equivalent USB-C DisplayPort Alt Mode dock makes more sense for older or non-Thunderbolt Spectres.
Do not choose by connector shape alone. Your Spectre must support the protocols required for video, charging and data, and its own display hardware determines how many monitors the dock can actually drive.

Prices and stock change frequently. The Plugable TBT4-UDZ was listed at $269.95 USD when checked on August 16, 2026. HP’s store page did not provide a dependable retail price for the Thunderbolt Dock 120W G4, so verify the current regional listing before buying.
First, identify your exact Spectre
“HP Spectre” covers several generations with different ports. An older Spectre x360 may have Thunderbolt 3, while a newer Intel model may provide Thunderbolt 4. Other versions have USB-C with DisplayPort Alt Mode but no Thunderbolt, and some USB-C ports may support charging or video with different limitations.

Check the exact product number rather than relying on the screen size or the words “Spectre x360.” Use one or more of these methods:
- Open Settings → System → About in Windows.
- Press Fn + Esc to open HP System Information on many HP notebooks.
- Read the label on the underside of the laptop or check the original purchase record.
- Search the product number on HP Support.
- Open the technical specifications or maintenance/service guide and inspect the description of each USB-C port.
Look specifically for Thunderbolt 3, Thunderbolt 4, USB4, DisplayPort Alt Mode and USB Power Delivery. A USB-C symbol alone is not enough. Dell’s docking guidance explains that USB-C docks require DisplayPort over USB-C, while Thunderbolt docks require a compatible Thunderbolt port. Older Spectre compatibility reports also show why results can vary by model and dock.
Which dock should you buy?
Plugable TBT4-UDZ: best overall for newer Spectres

Its headline display capability needs qualification. Plugable’s four-display configuration depends on a Windows Thunderbolt 4 or USB4 system with DisplayPort 1.4 HBR3 and Display Stream Compression. USB4 capabilities can vary by manufacturer, and a basic USB-C Spectre will not gain Thunderbolt functionality merely by connecting this dock.
Buy it if: you have a confirmed Thunderbolt 4/USB4 Spectre and want many ports without HP-specific fleet-management features.
Skip it if: your Spectre lacks Thunderbolt and you only need one display, Ethernet and a few USB devices.

HP Thunderbolt Dock 120W G4: best first-party HP option
The HP Thunderbolt Dock 120W G4 provides two DisplayPort 1.4 outputs, HDMI 2.0, an additional USB-C DisplayPort Alt Mode port, USB-A and USB-C connectivity, and Ethernet support including 2.5GbE. HP specifies up to 100W through USB-C and support for Windows, macOS and ChromeOS.
HP lists support for up to four 4K displays in supported configurations, but its documentation makes clear that the host notebook’s video capabilities determine the actual result. It is a sensible choice if you want HP’s support channels and firmware ecosystem.
There is an important Spectre-specific caveat: HP states that the dock’s power button is not functional with unsupported HP notebooks or non-HP notebooks. A consumer Spectre may work well for displays, USB and charging while lacking some commercial-notebook integration features.
Buy it if: first-party HP support and a conventional office-dock layout matter more than the lowest price.
Skip it if: you need a compact travel dock, the lowest-cost solution, or guaranteed access to HP commercial-only features.
HP Thunderbolt G4 and newer G6 docks: best for managed environments
HP’s current dock lineup includes Thunderbolt G4 variants and newer Thunderbolt 4 G6 models. HP positions these products around security, firmware integrity, remote management and fleet deployment.
Those features are valuable in a business fleet, particularly where IT needs centralized control. They are less compelling for a single home user with one Spectre, one monitor and a few peripherals. Availability and specifications vary by region and exact model, so confirm the product page before purchase.

Dell WD22TB4: a strong alternative
The Dell WD22TB4 is a full-size Thunderbolt 4 office dock with two DisplayPort 1.4 outputs, HDMI 2.0, USB-A and USB-C ports, Gigabit Ethernet and a 180W power adapter. Dell lists up to two 4K/60Hz displays in specified configurations and a three-year limited hardware warranty with advanced exchange.

The key limitation is charging. Dell specifies up to 130W for Dell commercial notebooks but up to 90W for non-Dell systems, which is the relevant figure for an HP Spectre. Dell also says its docks work best with Dell laptops, although standard USB-C and Thunderbolt functions can work with systems from other manufacturers.
Buy it if: your employer already uses it, or you find it at a strong price and need a sturdy Thunderbolt office dock.
Skip it if: you expect 130W charging on the Spectre, need an SD-card reader, or want many high-speed USB-C ports.
HP USB-C Dock G4: best for older or non-Thunderbolt models
The HP USB-C Dock G4 is aimed at laptops whose USB-C port supports multifunction USB-C, including video and charging. HP also lists support for Thunderbolt-enabled USB-C ports, a 90W AC adapter, and display configurations such as one 4K display, dual 2K displays or triple Full HD displays, subject to platform capability.

It is not the best choice for Thunderbolt storage, multiple 4K/60Hz monitors or maximum bandwidth.
Thunderbolt dock or USB-C dock?
Use this simple decision path:
- Confirmed Thunderbolt 3, Thunderbolt 4 or capable USB4? Choose a Thunderbolt 4 dock if you need multiple displays, fast external storage or many simultaneous peripherals.
- No Thunderbolt, but DisplayPort Alt Mode and USB Power Delivery? Choose a USB-C dock for one monitor and ordinary office accessories.
- USB-C charging only, or unclear video support? Do not assume a dock will work. Verify the port specification or use a direct video connection and separate charger.
Thunderbolt provides more bandwidth and flexibility, but it costs more and can involve additional firmware, BIOS and driver interactions. It also cannot add display capability missing from the Spectre.

Native video versus DisplayLink
A native Thunderbolt or DisplayPort dock uses the laptop’s built-in display pipeline. It is generally preferable for low-latency work, protected video and graphics-heavy applications.
A DisplayLink dock sends display data over USB and uses a software driver to create additional screens. That can be useful when the Spectre cannot natively drive enough monitors, but it introduces a software dependency and may behave differently with protected content, sleep/wake, games and graphics-intensive workloads.

DisplayLink is therefore an alternative, not an automatic upgrade or downgrade. Choose it when additional screens are more important than a purely native display path.
Monitor planning for an HP Spectre
- One 1080p or 1440p monitor: the least complicated target for a compatible USB-C dock.
- One 4K/60Hz monitor: a reasonable target for a Spectre with suitable Thunderbolt or USB-C Alt Mode support, using an appropriate cable and dock output.
- Two 4K/60Hz monitors: treat this as model-specific. Check the Spectre’s GPU, DisplayPort version, DSC support, operating system and the dock’s simultaneous-output limits.
- Four displays: a dock may advertise this, but it requires the right host display pipeline and monitor arrangement. It is not guaranteed by Thunderbolt 4 alone.
- High-refresh gaming displays: verify the dock output, cable, monitor input and Spectre GPU. Maximum resolution and maximum refresh rate may not be available together.
When HDMI and DisplayPort outputs share bandwidth, not all ports may operate at their maximum advertised modes simultaneously. If one monitor works but a second does not, test each display alone, lower the resolution temporarily and check whether the dock requires Thunderbolt rather than ordinary USB-C.

A dock’s advertised 90W, 98W or 100W output does not guarantee that the Spectre receives or sustains that amount. USB Power Delivery negotiates the available power, the dock may reserve some for itself, and the laptop may accept less than the dock can provide.
Heavy CPU or GPU use can also exceed dock power. A slow-charger warning, battery drain under load or charging that stops intermittently may indicate insufficient negotiated power rather than a defective dock.
Before buying, compare the wattage of the Spectre’s original HP charger with the dock’s output for non-HP systems. For example, Dell’s 130W WD22TB4 figure is for Dell commercial notebooks; Dell lists up to 90W for non-Dell systems. HP specifies up to 100W for the Thunderbolt Dock 120W G4, but actual behavior remains host-dependent.

If charging is unreliable, keep the original HP charger connected directly to the laptop and use the dock for displays and peripherals. That sacrifices the cleanest one-cable setup but can be the most dependable solution during sustained workloads.
Ports worth checking before purchase
- DisplayPort and HDMI count, version and simultaneous-output limits.
- USB-A quantity and speed, not just the number of sockets.
- USB-C data ports versus USB-C ports that also carry video.
- Downstream Thunderbolt ports for high-speed storage or additional devices.
- SD and microSD readers for photography and video work.
- Gigabit Ethernet versus 2.5GbE.
- Headphone and microphone support.
- Whether the host cable is included, replaceable and long enough for your desk.
- Firmware-update procedure, warranty and technical support.
- Power-button, wake and preboot behavior with a consumer HP notebook.
Troubleshooting an HP Spectre dock
The dock does not charge, or Windows reports a slow charger
- Confirm that the dock’s AC adapter is connected.
- Reconnect using the included host cable.
- Compare the dock’s non-HP charging specification with the Spectre’s original charger.
- Update the Spectre BIOS, Thunderbolt controller software and dock firmware.
- Test the original HP charger directly on the laptop.
- If charging fails only under heavy load, use the original charger alongside the dock.
One monitor works but the second does not
Confirm that the Spectre supports two external displays and that the dock is connected through the required Thunderbolt or USB-C protocol. Check the monitor cables, select Extend these displays in Windows, and install the DisplayLink driver if the dock uses DisplayLink. A direct USB-C-to-DisplayPort connection can establish whether the laptop itself can drive the second monitor.
HDMI works but DisplayPort does not
Try another cable, one monitor at a time and a lower resolution. The problem may be bandwidth sharing, an unsupported negotiated mode, a host-protocol limitation or outdated firmware and graphics drivers.
The Spectre sleeps or wakes unreliably
Update dock firmware, HP BIOS and graphics drivers. Test with only the monitor and keyboard attached, then reconnect USB devices individually. Also check Windows power-management and USB selective-suspend settings. Monitor EDID negotiation and peripheral power conflicts can affect wake behavior.
The dock works only after Windows starts
This can be normal. Preboot charging, wake-on-dock, Ethernet boot and power-button control may require BIOS support or manufacturer-specific integration. HP specifically notes host-BIOS dependencies, and the HP G4 power button is not functional on unsupported systems.
The Spectre becomes warm
High-resolution displays, DisplayLink software, external storage and sustained charging can increase system activity. A thin Spectre may also run warm during ordinary work. There is no basis for assuming one dock runs cooler without model-specific testing.
Buying a new or used dock
Prices and availability are volatile, so verify the exact SKU and current manufacturer listing before ordering. Confirm that the package includes the correct power supply and host cable, especially for used enterprise docks.

For a used dock, inspect the USB-C or Thunderbolt cable for damage, check firmware-update support, confirm whether the model is discontinued, and buy only with a usable return policy. Some docks require a proprietary high-wattage adapter to deliver their advertised performance.
For most newer Thunderbolt Spectres, choose the Plugable TBT4-UDZ for broad connectivity, the HP Thunderbolt Dock 120W G4 for first-party HP support, or an HP G4/G6 business dock when fleet management matters. For older or non-Thunderbolt Spectres, spend less on a USB-C DisplayPort Alt Mode dock and verify its charging and monitor limits first.
