There is no single dock that works best with every HP Pavilion. Check your laptop’s exact model and USB-C capabilities before buying: a Pavilion with USB-C DisplayPort Alt Mode and USB Power Delivery can use a native USB-C dock such as the HP USB-C G5 Essential Dock; a Pavilion with data-only USB-C may need a DisplayLink dock such as the Plugable UD-6950PDH for external displays. If the laptop does not accept USB-C charging, keep its original charger connected.
USB-C is only the connector shape—not a promise of video output or laptop charging. Verify the full Pavilion product number and port specifications first.

These are conditional recommendations, not guarantees for every Pavilion. Confirm the exact model’s video support, charging input, operating-system requirements, and display limits before purchase.
1. Find the exact Pavilion model
“Pavilion 15” or “Pavilion x360” is not specific enough: different generations and regional configurations can have different ports. On Windows, press Windows + R, type msinfo32, and check System Model. Find the product number in system information if listed, on the underside label, or in HP Support Assistant. Search that exact identifier on HP Support and consult its specifications.

For the USB-C port and power adapter, confirm all of the following:
- Whether USB-C supports DisplayPort Alt Mode (video output).
- Whether it accepts USB Power Delivery (USB-PD) input for laptop charging.
- Whether the laptop has Thunderbolt 3/4 or relevant USB4 display support.
- The port’s data rate and the Pavilion’s supported external-monitor configuration.
- The wattage of the original HP charger.
Icons on the laptop can offer clues, but use the model-specific HP specifications as the deciding evidence. HP’s dock compatibility guidance says full dock data and video require a host that supports DisplayPort Alt Mode, Thunderbolt 3 Alt Mode, or USB4 through USB-C; USB-PD support is needed for charging.
2. Choose the right dock technology
Native USB-C DisplayPort Alt Mode
A native USB-C dock uses the Pavilion’s DisplayPort video signal for its display outputs. It is generally the simpler choice for office work, gaming, video playback, and low-latency use, and typically does not require a separate display driver. The Pavilion must support DisplayPort Alt Mode, however. The dock cannot add that capability to a data-only USB-C port.
Thunderbolt or USB4
Thunderbolt and USB4 docks can provide high bandwidth and extensive peripheral support, but their more advanced capabilities are useful only when the Pavilion has the corresponding host support. A Thunderbolt dock connected to an ordinary data-only USB-C port does not create native video output or Thunderbolt-level performance. Match the dock to the laptop rather than paying for capabilities it cannot use.
DisplayLink
DisplayLink sends display data over ordinary USB traffic, so a compatible DisplayLink dock can add screens to some Pavilion laptops whose USB-C port lacks native video. It requires DisplayLink software and depends on drivers, making it less direct than native video. It is often practical for productivity displays, but gaming, protected streaming, color-critical work, high-refresh-rate use, and sleep/wake behavior can be less suitable or require troubleshooting. Treat these as possible limitations, not guarantees of failure.

Best native-video choice: HP USB-C G5 Essential Dock
For a newer Pavilion confirmed to support USB-C DisplayPort Alt Mode, the HP USB-C G5 Essential Dock is a sensible first-party desk-dock option. Its specification sheet lists up to 65W of host power and native USB-C Alt Mode video. That 65W output charges a Pavilion only if the laptop accepts USB-PD, and it may not meet the power needs of every model. Keep the original charger if the Pavilion does not support USB-C charging or needs more power.
Do not read the dock’s maximum display specification as a promise for every laptop. HP lists support as high as three 4K displays on suitable DisplayPort 1.4 systems with Display Stream Compression (DSC), with lower limits for DisplayPort 1.2 or systems without DSC. The Pavilion’s GPU, video implementation, operating system, resolution, refresh rate, and display configuration all matter. See the HP G5 Essential Dock specifications before matching it to your setup.
This is not the right choice for a Pavilion with data-only USB-C if you expect video from the dock. HP also notes that some features, including certain enterprise functions and power-button behavior, can be limited on unsupported or non-HP hosts. Dock firmware updates may temporarily interrupt use; HP says the dock is unusable while a connected firmware update is in progress.
Best DisplayLink option for two screens: Plugable UD-6950PDH
The Plugable UD-6950PDH is a candidate for Pavilion owners who need two external displays and cannot use native USB-C video. Because it uses DisplayLink, it may provide display output over a supported USB data connection even when the Pavilion’s USB-C port lacks DisplayPort Alt Mode. Install the appropriate DisplayLink software and confirm operating-system support before buying.

Plugable lists this dock as a dual-4K monitor model with up to 100W laptop charging. Those are dock capabilities, not a guarantee that a particular Pavilion will drive two 4K screens or accept 100W over USB-C. Charging still requires USB-PD support, and actual display resolution and refresh rate depend on the host and setup. If the Pavilion does not accept USB-C power, keep using its HP adapter.

Choose DisplayLink for office productivity and extra screen space when native video is unavailable. Prefer native video for gaming, latency-sensitive work, or a driver-free setup. Plugable’s dock catalog displayed the UD-6950PDH at $199.99 when accessed; prices and availability can change.
For three external screens: Anker Prime DL7400
The Anker Prime DL7400 is a 14-in-1, triple-display DisplayLink dock listed in Anker’s docking stations for HP collection. It is a specialized option for a Windows Pavilion setup that needs three external displays and can use DisplayLink software. “Triple display” describes the dock’s intended capability; it does not guarantee three independent high-resolution screens on every Pavilion.
Skip it if you want a driver-free connection, prioritize gaming or low-latency video, or need only one monitor and a few peripherals. Anker’s collection displayed a regular price of $299.99 when accessed; check the vendor for current pricing and exact configuration details.
Less expensive dual-monitor alternative: Plugable UD-MSTH2
The Plugable UD-MSTH2 is a practical dual-HDMI choice when the Pavilion supports native USB-C video. Plugable’s catalog lists 65W laptop charging, but charging depends on the laptop accepting USB-PD. Because this is a native USB-C/MST-style option, do not select it for video with a data-only USB-C Pavilion. Plugable’s catalog displayed it at $119.95 when accessed; that price is subject to change.

Plugable also lists the USBC-6950PDZ, a dual-HDMI dock with 100W pass-through charging, at $139.99 in the same catalog. Check that model’s specific video technology and requirements: a higher charging figure does not mean it works with a data-only port or that your Pavilion will accept the power. The catalog also includes more elaborate choices such as the triple-monitor UD-3900PDZ and UD-ULTC4K; buy those only when their particular technology and display capacity match the laptop.
Best compact travel choice: HP Travel USB-C Hub G3
HP describes the Travel USB-C Hub G3 as adding USB-C, USB-A, and HDMI connectivity. It can suit travel or occasional presentations when the Pavilion supports video through USB-C and you do not need a full desk dock. HDMI output still needs a host video path; this hub should not be treated as a fix for a data-only USB-C port. It is also not the obvious choice if you need a multi-monitor workstation, Ethernet, or extensive desk connectivity. Check HP’s dock and accessory information for details on the hub and your host.

Check three separate things before assuming a dock replaces the charger:
- Dock output: How much power reaches the laptop—not merely the dock’s total power supply or its advertised maximum.
- Pavilion input: Whether the laptop accepts USB-PD charging through that USB-C port.
- Power requirement: The wattage specified for the Pavilion’s original HP charger.
A dock can run monitors and peripherals without charging the laptop. If the Pavilion uses a barrel-style charger or its specifications do not confirm USB-C PD input, plan to keep the original adapter connected until compatibility is verified. Even a 100W dock cannot force a laptop that lacks USB-C charging support to charge over USB-C, and a lower-wattage dock may not keep up with a demanding Pavilion under load.
How many monitors can a Pavilion run?
The number of video ports on a dock is not the same as the number of independent displays your Pavilion can support. The limit may come from the laptop’s GPU, its USB-C video implementation, DisplayPort version, DSC or MST support, drivers, resolution, refresh rate, or dock technology. A dock advertised for 4K output does not guarantee 4K at a particular refresh rate—or multiple 4K displays—on your Pavilion.

For native video, check HP’s specifications for the exact laptop and the dock’s requirements. For DisplayLink, check the dock’s operating-system and display limits, then install its driver. Add monitors one at a time so you can identify where a host or bandwidth limit appears.
Setup and troubleshooting
Set up the dock in a controlled order
- Connect the dock’s own power supply, if it has one.
- Connect it to the Pavilion with the supplied or appropriately rated USB-C cable.
- Connect one monitor and confirm it works before adding others.
- Check USB peripherals, Ethernet, and charging separately.
- Add any remaining displays one by one, then test restart, sleep, wake, lid-close behavior, and audio.
- In Windows, open Settings > System > Display to detect displays, arrange them, and select the desired mode.
USB devices work, but the monitor is blank
First check whether the Pavilion’s port supports DisplayPort Alt Mode. USB data working does not prove video support. If the dock relies on native Alt Mode and the laptop is data-only, use a suitable DisplayLink dock instead. Also check the cable, monitor input selection, dock output, and—if applicable—whether the DisplayLink driver is installed.
The monitor works, but the Pavilion is not charging
Verify USB-PD input support on the laptop, host-delivered power from the dock, and whether the dock power supply is connected. Compare the dock output with the Pavilion’s charger requirement. If USB-C charging is unsupported or insufficient, connect the original HP charger.

Possible causes include the Pavilion’s native display limit, missing MST or DisplayLink support, a shared-bandwidth output, a resolution or refresh rate that exceeds the available capacity, or a driver problem. Check the dock’s exact technology and the laptop’s maximum display configuration; multiple connectors do not necessarily mean multiple independent displays.
A Thunderbolt dock does not fix video
A Thunderbolt dock cannot make native video appear on a Pavilion that has only ordinary USB data over USB-C. The laptop must support the relevant Thunderbolt, USB4 display, or DisplayPort Alt Mode feature. A DisplayLink dock is a different option if the Pavilion can run its software and supports the dock’s USB connection.
The dock stops working after sleep
Update the Pavilion’s graphics driver and, for DisplayLink, its driver. Check whether dock firmware is current, whether Windows power management or USB selective suspend is interfering, and whether the monitor is selecting the correct input after wake. Test with a reliable cable and note whether connecting the dock before or after waking changes the result. Follow the dock maker’s instructions for firmware updates; HP warns that use is interrupted during connected dock firmware updates.
Buying checklist
- Write down the Pavilion’s full product number—not just its family name.
- Confirm USB-C DisplayPort Alt Mode, USB-PD input, and any Thunderbolt or USB4 support.
- Compare the dock’s host-delivered charging power with the laptop’s needs.
- Choose native video for a compatible host or DisplayLink when native video is unavailable and software is acceptable.
- Match the number, resolution, and refresh rate of displays to the Pavilion, not just the dock’s headline claim.
- Check the exact outputs and other ports you need, such as HDMI, DisplayPort, Ethernet, USB-A, SD, or audio.
- Do not pay for Thunderbolt or extra monitor capacity the Pavilion cannot use.
