There is no universal best data migration tool in 2026. The right choice depends on whether you are moving a database once, running low-downtime change-data capture (CDC), ingesting SaaS data into a warehouse, modernizing ETL/ELT, or moving files. Start with the destination cloud for a cloud-bound database move, choose a managed ingestion service when operational simplicity matters, and choose a self-hosted or streaming stack only when you need that control and can operate it.
Quick recommendations
| Migration need | Best starting point | Why it fits |
|---|---|---|
| AWS-centered database migration | AWS Database Migration Service (DMS) | Managed full-load replication and CDC with AWS networking and security integration. |
| Azure and on-premises hybrid integration | Azure Data Factory; evaluate Fabric Data Factory for new Microsoft projects | Broad connectors, self-hosted integration runtime, scheduling and orchestration. |
| Google Cloud database CDC | Google Cloud Datastream | Serverless CDC and backfill into BigQuery, Cloud Storage, Cloud SQL, Spanner and Dataflow. |
| Managed SaaS or database ingestion | Fivetran | Hosted connectors and low day-to-day operating effort. |
| Self-hosting, sovereignty or custom connectors | Airbyte | Cloud, self-hosted and on-premises deployment choices. |
| Visual, transformation-heavy analytics pipelines | Matillion | Cloud-native visual workflows for warehouse and lakehouse modernization. |
| Governance and enterprise data quality | Qlik Talend Cloud | Broad integration, quality and governance capabilities. |
| Engineering-led, low-latency CDC | Debezium with Kafka or another streaming platform | Fine-grained event control, at the cost of substantially more infrastructure. |
These products are not interchangeable. DMS and Datastream are primarily database migration and replication services; Fivetran is managed ingestion; Matillion and Data Factory cover broader transformation and orchestration; Airbyte and Debezium provide more engineering control.
What counts as a data migration tool?
A migration tool moves or replicates data between relational or NoSQL databases, SaaS applications, files, object stores, warehouses, lakehouses and on-premises systems. It may perform a one-time bulk load, maintain a recurring sync, or capture changes continuously.
Keep adjacent categories separate:
- Backup and restore can work for some homogeneous database moves, but usually does not solve heterogeneous conversion or continuous replication.
- ETL/ELT moves and transforms data, often for recurring analytics rather than a controlled application cutover.
- CDC replication captures inserts, updates and deletes after an initial snapshot or backfill.
- Application migration moves servers or workloads, not just their data.
- File-transfer tools suit documents and object storage, not relational schema conversion.
Google describes Datastream as a CDC and replication service that also supports backfill and migration. Microsoft describes Data Factory as a managed ETL and integration service spanning on-premises and cloud systems.

- Get NVMe solid state performance with up to 1050MB/s read and 1000MB/s write speeds in a portable, high-capacity drive(1) (Based on internal testing; performance may be lower depending on host device & other factors. 1MB=1,000,000 bytes.)
- Up to 3-meter drop protection and IP65 water and dust resistance mean this tough drive can take a beating(3) (Previously rated for 2-meter drop protection and IP55 rating. Now qualified for the higher, stated specs.)
- Use the handy carabiner loop to secure it to your belt loop or backpack for extra peace of mind.

Identify your migration pattern first
One-time bulk migration
Examples include SQL Server to Azure SQL, Oracle to PostgreSQL, MySQL to Cloud SQL, a warehouse replacement, or S3 to another object store. Prioritize schema conversion, throughput, restartability, validation, the downtime window and rollback.
Continuous replication or low-downtime cutover
You need source-log compatibility, CDC, lag monitoring, ordering, DDL handling, reconciliation and a tested cutover. A full copy that cannot keep up with writes is not a migration plan.
SaaS-to-warehouse ingestion
For Salesforce, HubSpot or operational databases feeding a warehouse, connector coverage, API limits, incremental sync, deleted records, schema drift, managed operations and usage-based cost matter more than database conversion.
ETL/ELT modernization
Look for transformation execution, orchestration, tests, lineage, CI/CD, reusable components, governance and observability. A replication service alone may leave the core modernization work undone.
File or object-storage migration
Check large-object support, checksums, permissions and metadata, versioning, encryption, cross-region and egress charges, and resume-after-failure behavior.
Comparison by capability
| Tool | Best fit | CDC/backfill | Schema and transformation | Deployment | Pricing model | Main limitation |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| AWS DMS | AWS database moves | Full load plus CDC | Replication; schema conversion is a separate capability | AWS managed, including serverless option | On-demand, serverless and savings-plan models; see pricing | AWS-specific setup and potentially several surrounding services |
| Azure Data Factory | Microsoft and hybrid integration | Depends on connector and design | Broad ETL/ELT and orchestration | Cloud or self-hosted integration runtime | Usage-based runtime, activity, movement and transformation charges | More platform than a simple database copy requires |
| Google Cloud Datastream | Google-native CDC | CDC plus historical backfill | Replication; use Dataflow or other services for complex transforms | Serverless | Processed GiB plus separate destination and network charges | Not a universal ETL or SaaS connector platform |
| Fivetran | Managed recurring ingestion | Connector-dependent incremental sync and CDC | Destination-oriented transformation; verify source-specific behavior | Hosted | Consumption-based plans; see pricing | Costs can be difficult to forecast at high volume |
| Airbyte | Control and self-hosting | Connector-dependent; test exact source and target | Customizable, with operational responsibility on the customer | Cloud, self-hosted or on-premises | Open-source infrastructure cost plus cloud or enterprise terms | Upgrades, scaling, security and connector reliability become your job |
| Matillion | Visual cloud ELT | Usually pipeline and connector dependent | Strong transformation focus | Managed cloud orientation | Subscription or quote-based; confirm current plan | May be excessive for a one-time operational copy |
| Qlik Talend Cloud | Enterprise governance and quality | Workload and connector dependent | Broad integration, quality and lineage capabilities | Enterprise cloud offering | Plan or sales confirmation generally required | Higher implementation and licensing complexity |
| Debezium | Streaming-platform builders | CDC event streams | Use Kafka ecosystem components for transforms and sinks | Self-managed architecture | Open-source license; Kafka, operations and support still cost money | Not a turnkey migration interface |
Detailed tool guidance
AWS Database Migration Service
DMS is the default starting point for an AWS-bound relational migration, especially when the source must remain online during a full load and CDC phase. It integrates with AWS endpoints, IAM, TLS and Secrets Manager, and offers managed replication and a serverless option.
Do not confuse row replication with system conversion. AWS presents Schema Conversion as a separate capability in its migration decision guide. Costs vary with replication instance or serverless usage, storage, transfer and destination services. AWS has announced that DMS Fleet Advisor support ends on May 20, 2026; verify the current replacement before adopting it for long-term planning.

- Solid state performance with up to 800MB/s read speeds in a portable drive. (Based on internal testing; performance may be lower depending on host device, interface, usage conditions and other factors. 1MB=1,000,000 bytes.)
- Back up your content and memories on a storage solution that fits seamlessly into your mobile lifestyle.
- Take it with you on your adventures—up to two-meter drop protection means this durable drive can take a beating. (Based on internal testing.)

- From Sandisk, a brand professional photographers trust to take on assignments.
Runtime, activity, data-movement and mapping-data-flow costs need separate estimates. Connector availability does not guarantee identical behavior for every engine version or workload. Microsoft now positions Data Factory in Microsoft Fabric as the next-generation path for new data-integration users, so compare Fabric with classic Azure Data Factory before starting a new Microsoft program.
Google Cloud Datastream
Datastream is compelling when the destination is Google Cloud and low-infrastructure CDC is central. It supports sources including MySQL, PostgreSQL, AlloyDB, SQL Server, Oracle, MongoDB and Spanner, with some application sources listed as preview, and can feed BigQuery, Cloud Storage, Cloud SQL, Spanner and Dataflow.
Google bills processed data volume separately from those destination services. Its pricing page notes that internal processed-byte representation can be two to five times larger than apparent source data in many use cases. Current published CDC tiers are $2.00/GiB for the first 2,500 GiB, $1.50/GiB for the next tier, $1.20/GiB for 5,000–10,000 GiB and $0.80/GiB above 10,000 GiB; these figures are region- and date-sensitive, and backfill is priced separately. Check the current pricing page before budgeting.

Fivetran
Fivetran is the practical choice when a team values managed connectors and frequent synchronization over infrastructure control. Its pricing page advertises a free introductory plan limited to 500,000 monthly active rows for connections, while Standard, Enterprise and Business Critical plans add capabilities such as 15-minute Standard syncs, more than 700 managed connectors, RBAC, API access and SSH tunnels. Enterprise sync intervals can be as short as one minute according to the same page.
Consumption pricing can rise quickly with updates, deletes and high-frequency syncs. A managed connector may not expose every source-specific behavior, and a tightly controlled heterogeneous cutover may still require a database migration service.
Airbyte
Airbyte suits teams that need self-hosting, on-premises deployment, custom connectors or data-sovereignty control. The trade-off is operational ownership: you must plan upgrades, scaling, monitoring, security, connector changes, schema drift and recovery. “Open source” removes or reduces license cost for some components; it does not remove infrastructure or engineering cost. Verify current cloud and enterprise terms directly because pricing varies by deployment and contract.
Matillion
Matillion is designed for cloud warehouses and lakehouses, with visual workflows and an emphasis on transformation. It is a strong fit for analytics modernization where data must be reshaped as it moves, but a one-time operational database copy may not justify its broader platform. Transformation execution can create additional warehouse or compute charges.

Qlik Talend Cloud belongs on an enterprise shortlist when data quality, governance, lineage, compliance and complex integration outweigh quick setup. It is more likely to fit a formal data-management program than a small team seeking an inexpensive migration. Packaging and pricing generally require direct confirmation; do not treat older Talend Open Studio references as equivalent to the current product.

Debezium
Debezium is an architectural choice for teams intentionally building event-driven CDC. You still need Kafka or another streaming platform, connectors, schema management, sinks, security, monitoring and replay procedures. It offers control and flexibility, not a low-maintenance migration UI.
Features to verify before purchase
Exact source and destination compatibility
Confirm the engine and version, managed versus self-hosted deployment, authentication method, network path, replication-log requirements, data types, large objects, stored procedures, triggers, views, partitions, sequences, spatial/XML/JSON fields and proprietary types. “Supports databases” is not sufficient evidence.
Full load plus CDC
A production migration normally needs an initial snapshot or backfill, ongoing change capture, lag and failure monitoring, controlled cutover, reconciliation and restart or rollback. Ask whether DDL changes, deletes and transaction ordering are preserved.
Schema conversion and transformation
Check data-type mapping, names, constraints, indexes, partitioning, character sets, collations, time zones, NULL semantics, precision and scale. Replication may move rows without converting procedures, keys or application logic.
Security and networking
- Private networking, VPN or dedicated interconnect
- VPC/VNet placement, firewall rules and allowlists
- TLS, secrets management and customer-managed keys
- Role-based access, audit logs and support-access controls
- Data residency and on-premises agents or runtimes
Validation and observability
Require row counts, key-range counts, checksums or hashes, source-to-target reconciliation, failed-record quarantine, replication-lag metrics, alerting, audit trails, lineage and replay or restart controls. “Pipeline completed” is not proof that the migration is complete.
How to compare total cost
Compare the complete operating model, not a license headline:
- Subscription, consumption or instance charges
- Source and destination compute
- Cross-region or cross-cloud egress
- Staging storage, warehouse queries and transformation compute
- CDC-log retention and private-networking charges
- Support tiers, self-hosting infrastructure and connector maintenance
- Engineering, testing, reconciliation and failed-load labor
- Consultancy, partner and rollback costs
AWS DMS publishes on-demand, serverless and Database Savings Plans, with no minimum fees for on-demand and serverless options; see AWS DMS pricing. Google Datastream uses processed-GiB pricing, while Fivetran uses consumption-oriented plan pricing. These billing units cannot be compared directly.

A safe migration workflow
1. Inventory the estate
Record source and target engines and versions, data volume, daily change volume, peak write rate, largest tables and objects, data types, dependencies, retention and residency rules, downtime tolerance, network path and required cutover date.
2. Run a representative compatibility pilot
Include the largest table, the highest-change table, difficult types, Unicode and special characters, large objects, deletes, updates, schema changes and realistic network conditions.
3. Test the full load
Measure throughput, source impact, target write performance, retry and restart behavior, cost and validation duration. Do not reuse vendor throughput claims as your own benchmark.
4. Test CDC
Generate inserts, updates, deletes and DDL changes. Verify ordering, transaction boundaries, lag, log-retention requirements, network interruptions, duplicates, missing records and target idempotency.
5. Reconcile independently
Use row counts, key-range counts, aggregates, hashes or checksums, application queries, NULL and uniqueness checks, referential-integrity checks and business totals.
6. Cut over and retain rollback
- Freeze or reduce writes if possible.
- Confirm CDC lag is zero or within the approved threshold.
- Run final reconciliation.
- Switch application connections or DNS.
- Monitor errors and business transactions.
- Keep the old source read-only for the agreed rollback period.
- Decommission only after retention and rollback requirements are satisfied.
Failure modes that deserve explicit tests
Schema drift and deletes
Ask whether a new column, type change or rename is detected, ignored, propagated or causes a pause. Confirm that physical deletes and tombstones reach the destination; soft deletes need separate business logic.
Log retention and source impact
Transaction, redo or bin logs can be purged before a slow or interrupted consumer reads them. Size retention for long initial loads, outages, destination throttling, maintenance and reprocessing. Also limit full-table scans, CDC parallelism and long transactions so the source is not overloaded.
Large objects, time zones and precision
Test BLOB, CLOB, XML, spatial and document fields separately. Check timestamp precision, offsets, daylight-saving behavior, decimal precision and scale, character encoding and case-sensitive identifiers.

Referential integrity
Load parent tables first, use staging tables, temporarily defer constraints where supported, or apply constraints after reconciliation. Arbitrary load order can create transient or permanent foreign-key failures.
Network, egress and compliance
Budget cross-region transfer, cross-cloud egress, NAT gateways, private-link charges and temporary staging. For managed connectors, confirm processing regions, subprocessors, encryption, customer-managed keys, retention, support access and required HIPAA, PCI, GDPR, SOC 2 or sector controls.
“Real-time” claims
Require a defined latency target. “Real-time” may mean seconds, minutes, eventual consistency or a five-minute schedule, depending on the source, destination, volume and configuration.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the best free data migration tool?
There is no universally free production choice. Self-hosted Airbyte or Debezium can reduce license fees, but infrastructure, monitoring, security and engineering remain paid costs. Cloud free tiers and introductory plans have workload limits.
Is ETL the same as data migration?
No. ETL may be used during a migration, but it is usually designed for repeatable extraction, transformation and loading. A database cutover additionally needs full-load consistency, CDC, reconciliation, application switching and rollback.
When should I use AWS DMS instead of Fivetran?
Use DMS first for an AWS-bound database move requiring full load plus CDC and controlled cutover. Choose Fivetran when the primary need is managed, recurring SaaS or database ingestion with minimal operations.
Is Airbyte cheaper than Fivetran?
It can have lower license cost when self-hosted, but you assume infrastructure, upgrades, connector maintenance, scaling and support. Compare total cost for your volume and staffing rather than the license line alone.
Recommended Free Tools
How much downtime does a migration require?
It depends on source behavior, CDC capability, validation and application design. Full load plus CDC can reduce the final switch window, but no tool guarantees zero downtime or zero data loss without workload-specific testing and rollback controls.
Should I build a migration pipeline instead of buying one?
Build when you need specialized events, transformations or controls unavailable in products and have a team to operate the system. Buy or use a managed service when connector maintenance, security and recovery would otherwise consume more engineering time than the subscription.
