There is no single best crypto payment gateway in 2026. The right choice depends on whether you need stablecoins or many assets, fiat settlement or self-custody, a plug-and-play checkout or an enterprise API, and which countries and industries your business can serve.
For most merchants, BitPay is the strongest managed option for fiat settlement; NOWPayments is attractive for asset breadth and a low advertised service fee; BTCPay Server is the leading self-hosted choice; Coinbase Payment Acceptance is aimed at platforms needing a stablecoin payment API; and CoinGate offers a balanced international alternative. Crypto.com Pay is most compelling for businesses targeting Crypto.com users.
Prices, supported assets, country coverage and compliance requirements change frequently. The figures below were checked against provider pages on August 16–18, 2026.

How crypto payment gateways work
- The customer selects an asset and network at checkout.
- The gateway creates a quote, invoice or payment session.
- The buyer pays from a supported wallet or app.
- The gateway detects and verifies the transaction.
- The merchant fulfills the order after the required payment status is reached.
- Funds are settled in cryptocurrency, stablecoins, fiat or a combination.
- Refunds, exceptions and reconciliation are handled separately.
A wallet is not automatically a payment gateway. A gateway adds merchant-side functions such as invoice tracking, exchange-rate locking, payment-status verification, webhooks, refunds and settlement reporting.

Best crypto payment gateways by use case
Best for managed fiat settlement: BitPay
BitPay is the best fit for merchants that want an established managed processor rather than direct wallet operations. It supports local-currency, cryptocurrency or combined settlement, along with ecommerce, billing, retail, reporting and refund workflows.
Its published pricing is volume-based:
- Below $500,000 monthly volume: 2% + $0.25
- $500,000–$999,999: 1.5% + $0.25
- $1 million or more: 1% + $0.25
Higher rates may apply to high-risk industries. The fixed $0.25 component makes BitPay less attractive for low-value purchases, even when the percentage looks manageable.
Choose BitPay if: you prioritize managed compliance, fiat conversion, established merchant tooling and predictable operational workflows.
Look elsewhere if: your main goal is the lowest advertised fee, direct self-custody or a very broad long-tail asset list.
Best for low advertised fees and asset breadth: NOWPayments
NOWPayments advertises more than 350 currencies, a 0.5% service fee and an average transaction time of five minutes. That makes it appealing to merchants that want customers to pay with less common cryptocurrencies as well as mainstream assets.
However, “350+ currencies” measures breadth, not equal liquidity, reliability, wallet compatibility or settlement quality. Confirm the exact asset-and-network combination before launch. Also model network charges, exchange costs, payout fees, withdrawal charges and any compliance-related restrictions separately from the 0.5% service fee.
Choose NOWPayments if: broad asset coverage and a low advertised processor fee matter more than a narrow, highly standardized asset strategy.
Look elsewhere if: you need highly predictable bank settlement, minimal accounting complexity or enterprise underwriting with publicly documented commercial terms.

- Trusted by 6 million users worldwide (4.9 App Store, 4.8 Google Play) - buy, sell, swap, stake, and spend cryptocurrency directly. The secure offline storage wallet designed for how people actually use crypto wallets
Best self-hosted option: BTCPay Server
BTCPay Server is free, open-source and self-hosted. It sends funds to a connected wallet and does not charge a third-party processing percentage. It can run on cloud infrastructure, personal hardware or an existing host, with integrations for ecommerce, point of sale, payment links, crowdfunding and platforms including WooCommerce, Shopify, Magento, BigCommerce and Wix.
The trade-off is responsibility. You must manage hosting, backups, monitoring, updates, wallet security, key management, uptime and incident recovery. “No processor fee” does not mean zero cost: infrastructure and engineering time can exceed a hosted provider’s percentage fee.
Choose BTCPay Server if: you are technically capable, want direct wallet control and primarily need Bitcoin-oriented self-custody.

Best stablecoin API for platforms: Coinbase Payment Acceptance
Coinbase Payment Acceptance is a platform-grade stablecoin API, not simply a replacement for a hosted checkout plugin. Its documentation describes hosted payment pages, redirects, embeddable components, authorization, capture, voids, full and partial refunds, configurable settlement and USD or USDC settlement.
Supported networks listed in the documentation include Ethereum, Base, Arbitrum, Optimism and Polygon. Buyers can pay from Coinbase accounts or major self-custody wallets. The API includes a payment-session flow and lifecycle operations that resemble the control a platform may expect from card payments.
Coinbase says the product is intended for payment service providers, marketplaces and enterprise commerce platforms and requires onboarding with its team. Pricing is not publicly presented on the cited overview page.
This current product should not automatically be treated as identical to older comparisons of Coinbase Commerce. The current Coinbase business destination is Coinbase.com/commerce.

Choose Coinbase Payment Acceptance if: your platform needs stablecoin authorization, capture, refunds, settlement controls and API-level reconciliation.
Look elsewhere if: you are a small merchant seeking instant self-service signup and a publicly listed plugin fee.
Best balanced international gateway: CoinGate
CoinGate’s standard plan lists a 1% processing fee with no monthly fee, acceptance from more than 180 countries, more than 10 cryptocurrencies, fiat conversion, plugins, APIs, payment channels, invoicing and full or partial crypto refunds.
The 1% rate is not the complete cost. The pricing page separately lists crypto payouts at €0.50 + 0.5%, or €0.50 + 1.5% when the payout includes conversion. It also lists a €50 minimum withdrawal and weekly automatic settlements on the standard plan. These conditions may matter more than the processing percentage for a small or cash-flow-sensitive merchant.
Choose CoinGate if: you want managed international checkout, invoicing, plugins, fiat conversion and documented refund workflows.
Look elsewhere if: you need instant bank settlement, maximum asset breadth or the lowest possible all-in cost for small payments.
Best for the Crypto.com ecosystem: Crypto.com Pay for Business
Crypto.com Pay for Business advertises no transaction fee, but payout fees apply. It supports payments involving assets such as CRO, BTC, ETH, DOGE and USDC, subject to the supported asset and network lists. Fiat payout currencies include USD, EUR and AUD, with minimum settlement amounts listed in its documentation.

Crypto.com documents checkout buttons, redirects, APIs, test mode and webhooks. It also documents underpayment and overpayment handling, but warns that payments sent with an unsupported cryptocurrency or network will not be refunded or rebounded. Its documentation says the API is under heavy development and may introduce breaking changes.
Choose Crypto.com Pay if: your customers already use the Crypto.com App or your business operates within that ecosystem.
Look elsewhere if: you need universal wallet reach, highly stable API expectations or a payment experience independent of one provider’s app ecosystem.

Advertised fees are not total acceptance costs
Compare gateways using this model:
Total cost = processor fee + network or gas cost + conversion spread + payout fee + withdrawal fee + software and hosting + compliance and accounting overhead + payment-related fraud and dispute costs.
| Cost item | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Percentage fee | The provider’s charge on each payment |
| Fixed fee | Can make small transactions disproportionately expensive |
| Network fee | May be paid by the buyer, merchant or deducted from the transfer |
| Conversion spread | Reduces the value received when crypto is converted to fiat |
| Payout and withdrawal fees | May apply even when transaction processing is free |
| Minimum payout | Can delay settlement for low-volume merchants |
| Infrastructure | Especially important for self-hosted systems |
Illustrative examples
These are calculation examples, not claims about final provider charges:
- A $100 payment at a 0.5% service fee produces a $0.50 processor charge before network, conversion or payout costs.
- A $100 payment at 2% + $0.25 produces a $2.25 processor charge before other deductions.
- A self-hosted payment can have no processor percentage while still creating hosting, monitoring, wallet-security and engineering costs.
- A low-value payment can become uneconomical if a fixed charge, network fee or payout minimum is applied.
Stablecoins, Bitcoin, Lightning and altcoins
“Accepting crypto” describes materially different strategies:
- Stablecoins: generally reduce exchange-rate volatility, but retain issuer, reserve, blacklist, network and regulatory risks.
- Bitcoin or Ether: expose the merchant to price movements unless the gateway converts immediately.
- Altcoins: may expand customer choice but add liquidity, support, accounting and compliance complexity.
- Lightning: can suit fast, small Bitcoin payments but requires appropriate liquidity and operational infrastructure.
A gateway advertising hundreds of assets is not automatically better than one supporting a few reliable stablecoins and well-supported networks. Evaluate liquidity, settlement, wallet compatibility, refund handling and accounting—not just the asset count.
Hosted versus self-hosted gateways
| Hosted processor | Self-hosted gateway |
|---|---|
| Faster setup | Greater control |
| Provider manages more checkout and compliance functions | Merchant manages infrastructure and keys |
| Usually charges processing or payout fees | Usually shifts costs to hosting and engineering |
| May impose account, banking or asset restrictions | Reduces processor dependence but increases operational risk |
| Often includes managed support | Support may be community-based |
Integration features to check
Before choosing a provider, verify that it supports the functions your business actually needs:
Best Value
- Dual-chip architecture for maximum protection: The next-gen, fully auditable TROPIC01 chip works alongside a certified EAL6+ Secure Element—completely NDA-free—to deliver radically transparent, industry-leading defense against physical attacks.
- Quantum-ready security: Get protection against future threats with the first-ever hardware wallet designed with quantum-ready architecture.
- See every detail with confidence: Our largest high-resolution color touchscreen makes it easy to navigate your assets, review transactions and manage your coins with clarity.
- Wireless freedom with encrypted Bluetooth control: Manage, buy, swap and stake securely using Trezor Suite on desktop or mobile. Qi2-compatible wireless charging keeps your Trezor powered up. No cables required—security meets convenience.
- Works seamlessly with Android, iOS and desktop: Connect wirelessly or via USB-C to your phone or computer. Manage your crypto anywhere with our companion Trezor Suite app.
- Hosted checkout, payment links and invoices
- Plugins for your ecommerce platform
- REST or equivalent API access
- Sandbox or test mode
- Signed webhooks and server-side status verification
- Idempotency and duplicate-payment protection
- Payment expiry and quote locking
- Underpayment and overpayment rules
- Full and partial refunds
- Settlement webhooks and reconciliation exports
- Wallet and network validation
For example, the Crypto.com documentation shows a payment-creation flow, checkout rendering or redirect, server-side payment verification and webhook use. Its example API specifies amounts in the smallest currency unit, such as cents for USD:
curl https://pay.crypto.com/api/payments
-u YOUR_SECRET_KEY_PLACEHOLDER:
-d amount=10000
-d currency=USD
-d description="Product Name"
Coinbase’s documented lifecycle similarly covers payment-session creation, authorization, capture, void and refund operations. In either case, do not mark an order paid solely because a browser redirect succeeded; verify the payment on your server.
Exceptions that can cost more than the fee
Wrong network or unsupported asset
A customer can send the correct token on the wrong blockchain. Detection may fail, recovery may require manual intervention, and the funds may be unrecoverable. Crypto.com explicitly warns that unsupported cryptocurrency or network payments will not be refunded or rebounded. Make the selected asset and network unmistakable at checkout.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Underpayment
Underpayments can result from an expired quote, exchange-rate movement, a network fee deducted from the amount or customer error. Check whether the gateway rejects the payment, accepts it within a threshold, credits it proportionally, or requires manual review. Crypto.com documents configurable underpayment thresholds and a proportional-credit example.
Overpayment and duplicate payment
Confirm whether excess funds are automatically returned, whether network fees are deducted, and how duplicate payments are matched to an order. Your accounting process should distinguish an overpayment from a second legitimate order.
Refunds
Crypto refunds are not identical to card refunds. The asset’s fiat value can change, the customer may need to provide a wallet address, the original asset may be required, and network fees may apply. CoinGate advertises full and partial crypto refunds, while Coinbase documents partial refunds through its payment lifecycle.
Subscriptions
Blockchain payments are not automatically equivalent to card-on-file billing. Verify recurring invoices, renewal authorization, failed-payment retries, cancellation and partial-period refunds. Crypto.com documents subscription payments for customers using the Crypto.com App, but requirements vary by provider and wallet.

Compliance, custody and geographic eligibility
Eligibility has several separate dimensions:
- Whether your business may register in its country
- Whether buyers in a country may pay
- Whether fiat settlement is available there
- Whether banking partners support the relevant currency
- Whether your industry passes KYC/KYB and risk review
Hosted providers may simplify compliance while creating dependence on account approval, banking partners, withdrawal policies and supported-asset lists. Self-hosting reduces reliance on a processor but transfers responsibility for security, sanctions screening, transaction records and operational controls to the merchant. Consult qualified legal and tax professionals about local requirements.
Stablecoins also retain issuer and network risk. A stablecoin can be frozen or restricted, and a wrong-chain transfer cannot necessarily be recovered. Immediate fiat conversion reduces price exposure but does not remove compliance or banking risk.
A practical selection scorecard
| Criterion | Suggested weight | What to measure |
|---|---|---|
| Settlement and volatility control | 20% | Fiat conversion, stablecoins, settlement speed and currencies |
| Total cost | 20% | Processing, network, payout, withdrawal and conversion charges |
| Integration quality | 15% | Plugins, API, webhooks, sandbox and documentation |
| Compliance and geography | 15% | Merchant eligibility, restricted industries and banking access |
| Asset and network coverage | 10% | Useful liquidity and wallet compatibility |
| Refunds and exceptions | 10% | Underpayments, late payments, wrong networks and partial refunds |
| Custody and operational risk | 5% | Wallet control, account restrictions and key management |
| Support and reliability | 5% | Support channels and incident communication |
Apply country, industry and banking eligibility as hard filters before scoring. Treat unavailable pricing as “not publicly disclosed,” not as free or as a zero score.
Launch checklist
- Confirm merchant-country eligibility and prohibited industries.
- List the exact assets and networks you will accept.
- Decide whether settlement should be fiat, stablecoin, crypto or a mix.
- Calculate a realistic total cost for your average and smallest payments.
- Test invoice expiry, underpayment, overpayment and duplicate payment handling.
- Test full and partial refunds.
- Verify webhook signatures and payment status server-side.
- Reconcile a test settlement against your accounting system.
- Document customer support procedures for wrong-network and late payments.
- Start with a small transaction volume and recheck provider terms before scaling.
The Bottom Line
Bottom line: choose BitPay for managed fiat settlement, NOWPayments for broad asset coverage and a low advertised service fee, BTCPay Server for self-hosted control, Coinbase Payment Acceptance for enterprise stablecoin APIs, CoinGate for balanced international merchant tooling, and Crypto.com Pay when its app ecosystem matches your customers. Compare total cost, settlement, exception handling and eligibility—not just the headline transaction percentage.
