For most B450 owners, the AMD Ryzen 7 5700X3D is the best gaming upgrade. Choose the Ryzen 7 5800X3D if it costs nearly the same, the Ryzen 9 5900X for serious multicore work, the Ryzen 7 5700X for a cooler 65 W system, or the Ryzen 5 5600 for a low-cost modernisation.
B450 is an AM4 platform. Its practical final-generation upgrade family is Ryzen 5000—not Ryzen 7000, 8000, or 9000, which require an AM5 motherboard and DDR5 memory.

Ryzen 7 5700X3D: best gaming upgrade for most owners
The Ryzen 7 5700X3D is the strongest all-round gaming recommendation for a B450 system. Its eight Zen 3 cores, 16 threads, and 96 MB of L3 cache make it particularly effective in CPU-limited games and high-refresh-rate setups. The additional 3D V-Cache can help reduce processor bottlenecks, although the benefit is smaller when the graphics card is already the limiting component.

It is most compelling for owners upgrading from Ryzen 1000, 2000, or 3000 processors, especially with a powerful graphics card. At 1440p and 4K, GPU limitations often narrow the difference between processors. A Ryzen 5 5600 may therefore be sufficient for a budget or GPU-limited system.
Check the exact motherboard BIOS before buying. AMD provides product information and support downloads for the Ryzen 7 5700X3D. Availability can also be a problem: it is an older AM4 product, and reported end-of-life concerns have made inflated, used, and third-party listings more likely. Do not pay a premium that makes an AM5 platform more sensible.
Ryzen 7 5800X3D: top gaming-focused AM4 choice
The Ryzen 7 5800X3D remains one of the highest-end gaming upgrades available for AM4. It also has eight cores, 16 threads, 96 MB of L3 cache, and a 105 W TDP. AMD’s specifications list B450 compatibility, subject to motherboard firmware support: AMD Ryzen 7 5800X3D specifications.
Buy it when its price is close to the 5700X3D or when a specific game benefits from its higher advertised boost clock. It is a poor value if priced substantially above newer-platform alternatives. The X3D cache is primarily a gaming advantage; it does not automatically make the chip the best choice for rendering, encoding, or compiling.
Ryzen 9 5900X: best productivity balance
For video encoding, software compilation, 3D rendering, virtual machines, and heavy multitasking, the 12-core, 24-thread Ryzen 9 5900X is usually a better fit than either X3D processor. It offers a substantial multicore step up while allowing you to retain your B450 motherboard and DDR4 memory.

The trade-off is greater cooling and motherboard demand. Sustained all-core workloads can stress the VRM on an entry-level B450 board, particularly in a compact case with limited airflow. Confirm the board’s CPU list and look for independent VRM testing before installing this processor.
Ryzen 9 5950X: maximum AM4 core count
The 16-core, 32-thread Ryzen 9 5950X is the fastest commonly considered AM4 option for heavily threaded professional workloads. It makes sense for users who already own a capable B450 board and need maximum multicore performance without replacing the platform.

It is not automatically the best B450 CPU. Gaming-only users generally gain more from an X3D processor, while owners of weak VRMs, basic coolers, or poorly ventilated cases may not be able to sustain its potential. Compare the combined CPU, cooler, and possible platform cost before purchasing.
Ryzen 7 5700X: best efficiency-oriented eight-core option
The Ryzen 7 5700X provides eight cores and 16 threads at a 65 W TDP. It is a sensible choice for a quiet, efficient general-purpose PC, moderate productivity, or a B450 board that is less robust than premium ATX models.
It is easier to cool than the 105 W CPUs in this list, but it is not as fast in CPU-limited gaming as the 5700X3D or 5800X3D. If the X3D premium is small and gaming is the priority, choose the 5700X3D instead.

Ryzen 5 5600: best low-cost upgrade
The six-core, 12-thread Ryzen 5 5600 is the least expensive worthwhile modernising upgrade for many older Ryzen systems. It works well with a mid-range graphics card, delivers a clear architectural improvement over first- and second-generation Ryzen, and has a manageable 65 W TDP.
It is less suitable for high-refresh competitive gaming with a powerful GPU or sustained professional rendering. For those workloads, spend more on the 5700X3D or 5900X respectively.
What B450 actually supports
B450 is an AMD AM4 chipset, but the chipset name alone does not guarantee support for every AM4 processor. Compatibility depends on the exact motherboard model, hardware revision, manufacturer CPU support list, BIOS version, BIOS-chip capacity, and power delivery.
Some B450 boards support Ryzen 5000 only after a BIOS update. Early, inexpensive, or OEM-derived boards may have limited processor support or VRMs that are unsuitable for sustained 12- or 16-core loads. Treat the manufacturer’s model-specific CPU list as the final authority. For examples, see the ASUS PRIME B450-PLUS CPU support list and ASRock’s AM4 support list.
Is Ryzen 5000 the latest generation for B450?
It is the latest practical desktop upgrade family for B450, not the latest Ryzen generation overall. Ryzen 5000 uses AM4 and DDR4, while Ryzen 7000 and later mainstream desktop families use AM5. AMD introduced Ryzen 7000 with AM5, DDR5, and PCIe 5.0 support: AMD’s Ryzen 7000 announcement.

Do not attempt to install a Ryzen 7000, 8000, or 9000 desktop processor in a B450 motherboard. AM5 requires a new motherboard and DDR5 memory. The B450 upgrade saves the cost of those components, but it also leaves you with PCIe 3.0 connectivity on many implementations, DDR4, older I/O, and no future AM5 CPU path.
BIOS and compatibility checklist
- Record the exact motherboard name and PCB revision.
- Open the manufacturer’s official CPU support page.
- Find the exact processor, not merely the Ryzen 5000 family.
- Record the minimum required BIOS version and read its notes.
- Update BIOS while the current CPU still boots, unless the board has BIOS Flashback.
- Check VRM cooling, case airflow, and cooler compatibility.
- Confirm that you have a discrete graphics card when buying a non-G Ryzen CPU.
BIOS numbers are model-specific. For example, ASUS lists BIOS 3802 for the 5700X3D and BIOS 2409 for the 5900X on the PRIME B450-PLUS. Those versions do not apply universally to B450 boards.
Safe BIOS update procedure
- Download the BIOS only from the motherboard manufacturer.
- Read the release notes and flashing instructions.
- Use reliable power and do not reset the PC during flashing.
- Record important BIOS settings.
- Flash using the specified utility.
- After rebooting, load default settings.
- Install the new CPU and confirm detection in BIOS.
- Re-enable XMP or DOCP, then test memory and system stability.
If the replacement system does not boot
Clear CMOS, verify the CPU power connectors, reseat the memory, test with one memory module, and confirm that the BIOS update completed. Reinstall the old CPU if available. Check for bent AM4 CPU pins, excessive cooler mounting pressure, and whether a bridge BIOS version is required. If the board lacks BIOS Flashback and the old CPU is unavailable, a retailer or repair service may be needed.

TDP is not the same as measured wall power. It is a thermal-design indicator; actual package and system power vary with motherboard limits, boost behaviour, workload, BIOS configuration, and cooling. The 5700X’s 65 W rating generally makes it easier to cool than the 105 W 5700X3D, 5800X3D, 5900X, and 5950X, but it does not guarantee a particular electricity bill or temperature.
Use a capable AM4-compatible tower air cooler for a 105 W processor, verify case height clearance, and ensure the case has adequate intake and exhaust airflow. An entry-level cooler may be acceptable for a Ryzen 5 5600 but is a poor choice for sustained 5900X or 5950X workloads. Retail packaging varies, so do not assume a cooler is included.

B450 boards range from premium ATX models with substantial VRM heatsinks to basic micro-ATX designs with limited power delivery. A processor can be technically compatible yet throttle under sustained all-core work if VRM temperatures become excessive. Gaming is usually less demanding than rendering or encoding, so evaluate the workload rather than relying on the chipset label.
Integrated graphics: an important catch
The Ryzen 5 5600, Ryzen 7 5700X, Ryzen 7 5700X3D, Ryzen 7 5800X3D, Ryzen 9 5900X, and Ryzen 9 5950X generally require a discrete graphics card. AMD’s G-series models, such as the 5600G and 5700G, include integrated Radeon graphics but have different cache and PCIe characteristics. If your computer has no graphics card, do not buy a non-G CPU expecting the motherboard video outputs to work.
When AM5 is the smarter upgrade
Stay with B450 when you can reuse good DDR4 memory and the board has suitable BIOS and VRMs. Moving to AM5 is usually better when you are already replacing the motherboard, memory, cooler, and CPU; need DDR5, PCIe 5.0, or newer connectivity; want several future CPU upgrades; or find that a 5900X or 5950X plus cooling costs close to a new-platform build.
Do not compare only processor prices. Include a cooler, possible BIOS service, replacement motherboard, memory, shipping, and the risk of buying a discontinued or used AM4 chip. A cheap 5700X3D can be excellent value; an overpriced one can make AM5 the more rational purchase.
Buying advice in 2026
- Prefer a reputable seller with a clear return policy.
- Check whether the listing is new, tray, OEM, refurbished, or used.
- Be cautious of delidded, modified, or relabelled processors.
- Do not infer current retail value from historical launch pricing.
- For discontinued AM4 models, compare the total price with an AM5 CPU, motherboard, and DDR5 kit.
- Link to the exact model and verify live availability before publishing or purchasing.
