The best context-menu editor depends on what you want to change. Use ShellMenuView to disable unwanted static entries, ShellExView to investigate slow or crashing menus, and Nilesoft Shell to build a deeply customized menu. Winaero Tweaker is the better choice for Windows-wide tweaks such as enabling the classic full menu.
These tools are not interchangeable. Some manage existing Registry commands, some diagnose DLL-based shell extensions, and others add an entirely new configuration layer to File Explorer.

For most people who simply want to remove an unwanted item, start with ShellMenuView. If right-clicking is slow or Explorer crashes, start with ShellExView instead. If you want to design the menu yourself, Nilesoft Shell is the most capable option in this list.

Windows 11 has two related but different menu layers. The streamlined menu appears first; older commands may be available after selecting Show more options. Microsoft notes that some Windows 10 extensions do not appear in the streamlined menu but remain available in the older menu layer. See Microsoft’s File Explorer guidance.

That means a tool can successfully edit the classic menu while having no control over the first-level Windows 11 menu. An application may also need to update its own integration using Windows’ newer Explorer context-menu model, including IExplorerCommand and the windows.fileExplorerContextMenus package extension. Microsoft documents that model here.
Before installing anything, right-click the object, select Show more options, and check whether the command is already there. If it is, the problem may be menu discovery rather than menu configuration.
Best for removing unwanted entries: ShellMenuView
ShellMenuView is the focused choice for static Explorer context-menu items. It lists registered commands and lets you disable or re-enable entries instead of permanently deleting them.
How to use ShellMenuView
- Download it from the official NirSoft page and extract the ZIP to a dedicated folder.
- Run the executable appropriate for your system architecture where separate builds are provided.
- Inspect the item name, target type, file extension, company, product and path.
- Disable one unwanted item using the program’s enable/disable control.
- Test the file, folder, desktop or other object type where the command appeared.
- Restart Windows Explorer, sign out, or reboot if the menu has not refreshed.
- Re-enable the item if an application feature disappears or stops working.
ShellMenuView is deliberately narrow. It does not edit every visible context-menu command, and it is not a custom menu designer. If a command is supplied by a dynamic shell-extension DLL, investigate it with ShellExView.
Best for slow or crashing menus: ShellExView
ShellExView targets dynamic shell extensions. These integrations can come from cloud-storage clients, archive tools, antivirus software, version-control systems, graphics applications and other programs. A faulty or inefficient extension may contribute to delayed right-click menus, Explorer freezes or crashes.

A safer diagnosis workflow
- Download ShellExView from the official NirSoft page rather than a third-party repackaging site.
- Sort or filter extensions by publisher, product, file type or path.
- Pay particular attention to recently installed or updated third-party software.
- Hide or de-emphasize Microsoft extensions if the interface offers that option, while remembering that a non-Microsoft extension is not automatically unsafe.
- Disable one suspect extension.
- Restart Explorer and reproduce the problem.
- If nothing changes, re-enable the extension and test the next suspect.
- After identifying the likely cause, update, uninstall or reconfigure the parent application where possible.
Do not disable several extensions at once. You may remove useful thumbnail, preview, synchronization-overlay, antivirus, archive or drag-and-drop functionality and lose the ability to identify the cause.
ShellMenuView and ShellExView complement each other: one focuses on static commands, while the other focuses on dynamic extensions.

Nilesoft Shell is the strongest choice for power users who want to add and organize commands rather than merely clean up an existing menu. Its official documentation describes custom items, nested menus, separators, icons, expressions, filtering and scripts configured through a plain-text file.
Download it from the official download page and consult the configuration documentation before making extensive changes. The project offers installer and portable builds and describes support for Windows 7, 8, 10 and 11 across x86, x64 and ARM64 variants.
Use Nilesoft Shell when you need
- Application launchers for selected files or folders.
- Nested submenus instead of a long flat list.
- Conditional commands based on file type or selection.
- Scripts, separators, icons and custom actions.
- A configuration you can back up and edit as plain text.
Add one simple command first, test it on the intended object type, and only then add conditions or submenus. Keep a backup of the configuration file. If Explorer behaves unexpectedly, restore the previous configuration or temporarily remove the custom configuration.

Nilesoft Shell is excessive if your goal is just to disable three unwanted entries. It adds another customization layer that you will need to maintain as Windows and other applications change.
Best for restoring the classic menu: Winaero Tweaker
Winaero Tweaker is a broad Windows customization utility, not a dedicated context-menu editor. Its relevant advantage is access to Windows 11 context-menu and Explorer-related tweaks, including options associated with the classic full menu.
Use the exact option labels shown by the current release rather than relying on an old guide’s menu path. Create a restore point first, apply one change, and restart Explorer if necessary. Restoring the classic menu is different from customizing Windows 11’s modern first-level menu: it changes which layer you see by default but does not automatically give you complete control over every modern command.
Simpler graphical alternatives
Easy Context Menu
Easy Context Menu is suited to beginners who want practical preset commands through a graphical interface. It is less appropriate for complex conditions, elaborate nested menus or fine-grained control over shell-extension behavior. Check the current official release and licensing information before downloading.
FileMenu Tools
FileMenu Tools provides a richer command-oriented feature set for file and folder operations. It is a better fit than a minimalist cleaner when you want useful actions added to Explorer, but it may be more software than necessary for disabling one broken handler. Confirm current Windows 11 compatibility and licensing on the developer’s site.

What the built-in and manual options can do
Use Show more options first
If an older program’s command is missing from the Windows 11 first-level menu, right-click the object and choose Show more options. The command may already be available in the classic layer. Updating the application may also add support for Windows 11’s modern integration model.
Separate related problems
- New submenu: file templates are a separate use case from ordinary context-menu cleanup.
- Open With: this is primarily a file-association problem.
- One file type: a command targeted at one extension requires different registration from a global file or folder command.
- Group Policy: useful only where an applicable policy exists, particularly in managed environments.
Manual Registry or PowerShell changes offer precise control without a third-party download, but they are a last resort. Export the relevant Registry key first, record whether the change affects the current user or all users, and prepare a tested rollback. Updates, application repairs and reinstallations can re-register removed commands.
Safety and reversibility
- Download only from the developer’s official site or an official project repository such as the Nilesoft Shell repository.
- Create a restore point before system-level tweaks and export Registry settings before manual edits.
- Prefer disable or hide operations over deletion when troubleshooting.
- Record the item name, publisher, path and parent application.
- Change one item at a time and test the relevant file, folder or location.
- Remember that portable software can still modify the Registry, require elevation or change Explorer behavior.
- If antivirus or SmartScreen raises a warning, verify the source, signature and any developer-published hashes rather than assuming the warning is false.
A visible menu item may be only one part of a larger integration. Removing an antivirus, cloud-storage or version-control command can also remove useful status overlays, previews or file operations.

The entry still appears
Check both the streamlined menu and Show more options. Confirm that you changed the correct file, folder, drive or desktop entry, then restart Explorer. The application may have registered both a static command and a shell extension.

Re-enable the item or extension immediately. Test the parent application, then look for an application update or a setting that disables only the visible command.

Right-click is still slow
Continue with ShellExView one extension at a time. The delay may be conditional on a particular file type, network location, multiple selection or special shell namespace. Disabling one handler is not guaranteed to improve performance.
The application keeps adding the command back
Updates, repairs and reinstallations can restore registrations. Identify the parent product and change its own integration settings where available.
The tool cannot see the item
The item may belong to the other menu layer, the New submenu, Open With, a packaged-app integration, a special shell object or a custom menu utility. No editor should be assumed to cover files, folders, drives, desktop background, taskbar and every special Explorer location.

- Avoiding downloads: Show more options, application settings and applicable Windows policies.
For advanced shell and startup diagnosis beyond context menus, Microsoft’s Autoruns can expose broader Explorer and startup integration, but it is not a dedicated context-menu editor and should be used cautiously.
