The best Comcast combo unit is the one Xfinity approves for your exact address, service, speed tier and, if applicable, Xfinity Voice. For many cable customers with internet only, a DOCSIS 3.1 gateway is a sensible starting point. Before buying, check the live Xfinity compatibility list; approval can change, and a product’s advertised speed is not a promise of your actual service speed.

A gateway, also called a modem-router combo, combines a cable modem and Wi-Fi router in one enclosure. The models below are candidates, not universal recommendations. Xfinity’s published list dated March 25, 2025 includes the ARRIS and Netgear models shown; verify the exact model against Xfinity’s live checker and your address before purchasing.

The Xfinity capability figures in the table are approximate wired-download ratings in its March 25, 2025 device list, not measured household results. The list also includes Netgear CBR750 and Hitron CODA-series devices, but a CODA56 is a modem, not a combo unit. A standalone modem needs a router for Wi-Fi.

Confirm that the connection is cable
A cable modem-router combo is for cable-based Xfinity service, not a universal replacement for fiber equipment. At some fiber-only WiFi Ready Apartment or Xfinity Communities properties, residents may need to use the preinstalled Xfinity Fiber Gateway and may not have an option to activate a customer-owned cable modem. Check the property’s rules and Xfinity’s WiFi Ready guidance before buying.

Check Xfinity Voice and special features
If your account includes Xfinity Voice, select only equipment Xfinity explicitly marks as Voice-enabled. Many popular data-only gateways—including the G34, G36, G54 and Netgear CAX80—are not Voice choices; Netgear also states that the CAX30S does not support bundled cable voice. Xfinity Home and some smart-home features can have their own gateway requirements. Confirm the exact model and features in Xfinity’s checker rather than relying on a retailer’s “Comcast compatible” label.
Match speed and Ethernet ports
For a new cable purchase, DOCSIS 3.1 is the practical baseline. Some DOCSIS 3.0 devices may work on some lower tiers, but they leave less headroom and can be a poor long-term buy. Manufacturer throughput claims describe device capability, not the speed Xfinity will deliver to your home.

- A gigabit Ethernet port can limit a wired connection on service above 1Gbps.
- For multi-gig service, look for at least one 2.5Gbps Ethernet port, then confirm both that the gateway has the needed port and that Xfinity approves it for your plan.
- Check the number and speed of ports if you will connect multiple wired devices; a single multi-gig port may not meet every home’s needs.
Choose Wi-Fi for the home, not just the label
Wi-Fi 6 is enough for many homes. Wi-Fi 6E adds a 6GHz band, which requires compatible client devices; Wi-Fi 7 can be appealing in a new high-end network, but does not compensate for missing Xfinity approval, inadequate Ethernet ports or poor placement. Walls, floors, interference, gateway location and client devices determine practical coverage. A faster modem cannot fix a weak Wi-Fi signal or a poor coax connection.

ARRIS SURFboard G34: a modest internet-only gateway
The March 25, 2025 Xfinity list identifies the DOCSIS 3.1 G34 as a Wi-Fi gateway with no Voice support and about 934Mbps of listed wired-download capability. It is a possible fit for internet-only customers whose plan is within the limit Xfinity currently confirms. Skip it if you need Voice, multi-gig capacity or broad coverage across a large home; consider mesh or separate equipment for the latter.
ARRIS SURFboard G36: more listed headroom
Xfinity’s 2025 list identifies the DOCSIS 3.1, Wi-Fi-equipped G36 as data-only, with about 2.32Gbps of listed wired-download capability. It may suit internet-only customers on a faster compatible cable tier who want one box. Voice customers should skip it, and homes needing several wired multi-gig connections should check its port layout before purchase.
ARRIS SURFboard G54: high-capacity option, not an automatic winner
The same Xfinity list gives the G54 about 2.34Gbps of wired-download capability and identifies it as a DOCSIS 3.1 Wi-Fi gateway without Voice support. That small numerical advantage over the G36 is not enough by itself to establish better value. Compare current approval, ports, Wi-Fi needs, price and support, and skip it if you need Xfinity Voice.

Netgear Nighthawk CAX80: premium Wi-Fi 6 in one box
Netgear describes the DOCSIS 3.1 CAX80 as a Wi-Fi 6 modem-router for cable providers including Xfinity. Its product page showed a price of $499.99 on August 16, 2026; confirm the current price and Xfinity approval before ordering. It may suit an internet-only customer who wants a premium single unit and whose plan is supported. Netgear says it is not for bundled cable voice or fiber, and it may be excessive for a small home or a customer who does not need its capabilities. See Netgear’s CAX80 specifications.
Netgear CAX30S: a less expensive Wi-Fi 6 option
Netgear advertises the CAX30S as a DOCSIS 3.1/Wi-Fi 6 gateway with up to 2.7Gbps device throughput. Its product page showed $379.99 on August 16, 2026. That manufacturer figure is not an Xfinity plan rating or guaranteed internet speed; use the live Xfinity checker to establish whether the exact model supports your plan. Netgear says it does not support bundled cable voice or fiber. It is a possible internet-only option, but less suitable if you need a dedicated mesh system. See Netgear’s CAX30S specifications.

Combo gateway, separate equipment or Xfinity gateway?

Xfinity says customers can use their own approved modem, router or gateway, and that a standard router compatible with the speed tier can be used with compatible equipment. Its customer-owned equipment guidance is the starting point; Xfinity’s service agreement says it is not responsible for operating, supporting, maintaining or repairing customer equipment. A separate setup can also make it easier to upgrade Wi-Fi or place mesh access points without replacing the modem.
Compare the actual monthly cost, not a generic rental fee
Owning a gateway may reduce equipment costs, but does not automatically remove every charge or add-on. Plan structures, promotions and whether a gateway or unlimited data is included can vary; customer-service discussions also show that these arrangements change. Check your own plan checkout and account details instead of assuming a standard rental price. Xfinity discussions about custom modems and removing xFi Complete illustrate why the account-specific terms matter.
- Compare the monthly total with Xfinity equipment and with customer-owned equipment.
- Check whether unlimited data is included or separately priced, and note any promotion’s expiration date.
- Include the purchase price, possible replacement cost, expected ownership period and any mesh equipment or pods you need.
- Consider whether you expect to move or change providers before the device pays for itself.
Owning equipment does not itself provide unlimited data, mesh pods, advanced security or other plan features. There is no reliable universal break-even figure without your account’s current pricing.

Buy used only after checking the exact unit
- Verify the complete model number and hardware variant against Xfinity’s current checker.
- Ask whether the device is still registered to another customer and whether it can be returned if activation fails.
- Check warranty coverage and transferability with the manufacturer or seller.
- Avoid obsolete DOCSIS 3.0 gateways unless the plan is modest and the price makes the limitations worthwhile.
- Do not buy a rented Xfinity gateway expecting to convert it into customer-owned equipment.
Activate a customer-owned gateway with the Xfinity app
- Connect the gateway to an active coax outlet using its Cable In or RF In port, then connect power and wait for it to become ready.
- Open the Xfinity app and sign in with your Xfinity ID. Select Get Started.
- If replacing equipment, go to Account → Set up equipment or devices → Xfinity Gateway or Modem under Internet.
- Let the app check the connection, then enter the Wi-Fi network name and password you want to use.
- Confirm the settings, finish activation, and reconnect your phones, computers, smart-home devices and streaming equipment to the new network.
Xfinity says app activation generally takes about 20 minutes; setting up the network after confirmation can take up to 10 minutes. Menu labels may change. Follow the current Xfinity app activation instructions if your screen differs.
If activation does not work
- Check that Xfinity approves the exact model for your account and address, and that it is not still associated with another account.
- Confirm the coax is seated in Cable In/RF In. Try another active outlet using the app’s Try Another Outlet option, and temporarily remove unnecessary splitters.
- If no active outlet is found, use the app’s technician-help path or contact Xfinity.
- Restart the gateway by unplugging its power cable, waiting one minute, and reconnecting it, as described in Xfinity’s cable modem troubleshooting guidance.
Place the gateway where Wi-Fi can reach
Even a compatible gateway can provide poor wireless coverage if it is hidden in a cabinet, placed low, or separated from devices by dense walls. Put it in an open, central location when practical; Xfinity recommends keeping a gateway off the floor and out of cramped spaces in its activation guidance. For persistent dead zones, a separate mesh system may address the coverage problem more effectively than buying a gateway with a higher advertised speed.
