For most SpellTable players, a properly mounted 1080p webcam—or an existing smartphone—is the right choice. SpellTable’s official FAQ recommends a camera capable of 1280×720 streaming, and its card-recognition guidance prioritizes a level, directly overhead view, readable card size and unobstructed cards over headline resolution. A Logitech C920s Pro is the sensible dedicated budget choice; Logitech Brio 4K and Elgato Facecam 4K make sense mainly when you also stream, record or need advanced controls.
What SpellTable actually needs from a camera
SpellTable’s official recommendation is a webcam capable of 1280×720 streaming, not a 4K camera. Its FAQ says the service captures an approximately 300×300-pixel region from a 720p stream when a card is selected, so a sharp, well-framed card is more useful than unused capture resolution. See the official SpellTable FAQ for the platform’s guidance.
- Overhead geometry: Mount the lens directly above the play area and parallel to the table. A tilted view makes cards trapezoidal, shrinks the far side of the mat and can make recognition harder.
- Useful framing: Show every zone opponents need, including cards near the top and bottom edges, without making individual cards too small.
- Stable mounting: A rigid arm, tripod or phone holder is more important than a premium sensor if the camera moves whenever the desk is touched.
- Focus behavior: Autofocus is convenient, but a permanent overhead setup may benefit from a focus lock or manual focus if the camera repeatedly hunts when hands enter the frame.
- Lighting: Diffused side lighting usually works better than a bright ceiling light reflected in glossy sleeves or foil cards.
- Browser compatibility: The camera should appear as a normal selectable input, with the required USB connection, permissions and software available on your computer.
You do not need a second camera for your face. One camera aimed at the battlefield is the simplest arrangement; a second view is optional for streaming or calls.

Best budget choice: phone or Logitech C920s Pro
Use an existing phone when you already own one
SpellTable officially supports Apple and Android phones as cameras, although its legacy FAQ describes the feature as experimental. A recent phone can look better than a cheap webcam, but only if it stays mounted, powered and connected. Notifications, calls, screen locking, battery drain and heat are practical risks.
Buy the C920s Pro when you want a dedicated USB device
The C920s Pro’s 1080p output is comfortably above SpellTable’s 720p recommendation. It is a sensible value because the money saved can go toward a rigid overhead arm and diffused lighting. It is not automatically sharper than every newer webcam, and its image still depends on distance, focus and room lighting.

Premium webcams: when 4K is worth paying for
Logitech Brio 4K
The Brio is the most flexible all-purpose option in this group. Logitech lists 4K at 30 fps, 1080p at up to 60 fps and 720p at up to 90 fps, with selectable 65°, 78° and 90° diagonal fields of view. It has autofocus, a detachable clip with a tripod thread and software controls, including manual-focus adjustment through Logitech software. Details are on the Brio product page.
Start with autofocus at the final overhead height. If hands repeatedly trigger blur, use manual focus if your software version exposes it. The monitor clip is not an overhead mount by itself.

Elgato Facecam 4K
Facecam 4K targets creators who want 4K60, manual image controls and lens-filter support. Elgato lists macOS 13 or later, iPadOS 17 or later on a native USB-C iPad, and USB-C or USB-A operation with the relevant adapter or port. It has no built-in microphone, so plan separate audio for calls or streams. See the official specifications.
Razer Kiyo V2
Razer lists 4K30, HDR, AI-powered auto-framing and compatibility with OBS and XSplit on Windows 10 or later through a direct USB-C connection. Auto-framing is primarily a face-facing feature and may be undesirable for a fixed tabletop shot. One May 2026 review reported a mounting concern when the camera was pointed sharply downward; that is one reviewer’s experience, not a universal product verdict. Check the Razer specifications before buying.

Set the geometry first
- Place the mount so the lens is parallel to the tabletop, not aimed diagonally at it.
- Raise or lower the camera until the complete relevant play area fits.
- Leave margin for cards, tokens and counters placed at the edges.
- Check that cards remain large enough to read; an ultrawide view can make the entire mat visible but individual cards too small.
Test optical problems
- Use sleeved cards, a foil card and a token during testing.
- Add diffused light from the side or from multiple directions.
- Move your hands over the battlefield and watch for autofocus hunting or shadows.
- Tap the desk deliberately; the image should not swing or sag.
- Check cards at every edge and confirm that no hand, die or object regularly obstructs them.
Community reports commonly identify glare, overhead lighting and camera angle as practical problems, but those reports are anecdotal rather than controlled tests. A camera upgrade cannot fix a card that is hidden, reflective or outside the frame.

Streaming, recording and interchangeable-lens cameras
If SpellTable is only for playing, a phone or 1080p webcam is usually the better value. Premium hardware becomes easier to justify when you record local video, stream through OBS, use the camera for meetings or want one device for several jobs.
A mirrorless or DSLR can feed SpellTable through the Elgato Cam Link 4K, which converts HDMI output into a webcam input. This requires a compatible camera, clean HDMI output, capture hardware, cables, power and a stable mount. It also introduces possible heat, battery, HDMI and software failures, making it excessive for ordinary games.
Troubleshooting a missing or poor camera feed
- Camera does not appear: Confirm browser camera permission, close other apps using the camera, reconnect it and try another USB port.
- Feed stays on the old device: Refresh SpellTable after changing the selected input.
- Phone is not detected: Open the same game URL on the phone and computer, sign in with the same account and check the phone browser’s camera permission.
- OBS feed is wrong: Verify that OBS is outputting the intended scene and that SpellTable has the OBS virtual camera selected.
- Cards are blurry: Test final camera height, allow autofocus to settle, then use a model-specific manual-focus control if available.
- Cards are shiny or unreadable: Move or diffuse lights and test again with foil and glossy sleeves.
- Image shakes: Replace improvised stacks or monitor balancing with a rigid arm or tripod mount.
SpellTable notes that modified cards, proxies, custom tokens and alters may not exist in its database. Better optics cannot solve a database limitation.
Quick Recap
Which camera should you buy?
- $0: Use an existing Apple or Android phone if you can mount and power it reliably.
- About $70: Logitech C920s Pro for a dedicated USB webcam.
- About $170: Logitech Brio 4K if you also want meetings, recording, adjustable FOV and a tripod thread.
- About $200: Elgato Facecam 4K for creators who value 4K60 and manual image control, and can provide separate audio.
- Already own a mirrorless or DSLR: Consider Cam Link 4K only when the existing camera and production workflow justify the extra complexity.
