1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFor most people, start with Copyfish if you need to select a region and copy text from images, video, or PDFs. Choose Project Naptha when you want text in ordinary web images to behave like selectable page text. Use Google Lens in Chrome or Firefox when searching, translating, and copying are part of the same visual-search workflow. None of the available official descriptions establishes a universal OCR-accuracy winner, so the right choice depends on your content, browser, and privacy requirements.
Quick comparison
| Tool | Best fit | Content and interaction | Data path and requirements |
|---|---|---|---|
| Copyfish | Region-based OCR across varied content | Select an area; extracted text appears in an overlay. Official listings cover images, videos, PDFs, photographs, charts, diagrams, screenshots, comics, memes, and subtitles. | Uses OCR.Space’s free OCR API. Developer lists Chrome, Edge, and Firefox support. Optional desktop OCR requires the UI.Vision XModule. |
| Project Naptha | Inline selection in web images | Move the I-beam over detected text, highlight it, then copy, edit, or translate with Ctrl+C. | Listing says OCR and detection run locally. When text is highlighted, it checks a remote server for a public transcription using a cryptographic hash of the image URL; cookies and user tokens are excluded. |
| Google Lens in Chrome | Visual search plus text actions | Search an entire page, an individual image, or a selected page region; copy or translate recognized text. | Google says a screenshot and page data are sent for processing and temporarily stored for the specific query. |
| Google Lens in Firefox | Built-in image search and translation | Right-click an image, select a region, identify objects, translate, copy, highlight, or search selected text. | Requires Google as the default search engine. Mozilla says rollout is gradual, so availability varies. |
Store metadata changes independently by browser. For example, the Chrome listing showed Copyfish 7.0.12 updated September 17, 2026, while Firefox showed 7.0.9 updated September 2, 2026; Project Naptha’s listing showed 0.9.7 updated January 2, 2026. Check the current listing before installing.
Which extension should you choose?
Choose Copyfish for mixed media and precise regions
Copyfish is the most explicit match when your text may be in a video frame, PDF, infographic, screenshot, comic, meme, or photograph. You drag over only the area you want recognized, then read or copy the overlay. Its repeat function is useful for subtitles or another region that changes repeatedly, and translation is included in the described workflow.
Copyfish is not presented as purely local OCR: its listings say it uses OCR.Space’s free OCR API. That means the image region follows the service’s OCR path. The normal browser extension and its optional desktop mode are separate. For desktop applications or files outside a browser page, the Firefox listing documents UI.Vision XModule support; OCR.Space separately describes local Windows and Mac OCR through UI.Vision XModules2.

Choose Project Naptha for an I-beam over image text
Naptha aims to make words embedded in a web image feel like normal text. Hover until the I-beam appears, select the characters, and use Ctrl+C or the available edit and translation actions. This is often quicker than drawing a rectangle for every label in a scanned page or screenshot.
The privacy description has two parts that should not be conflated. The listing says OCR and text detection happen locally. It also says that, after you highlight text, the extension can query a remote server for a public transcription identified with a cryptographic hash of the URL, without cookies or user tokens. The listing focuses on web images; it does not establish Copyfish’s explicitly documented video and PDF workflow.
Choose Google Lens when search is as important as copying
Lens is built into supported browser workflows rather than installed as a dedicated OCR toolbar. In Chrome, open Lens from the page or image context menu, then select the portion to search or work with. In Firefox, Mozilla documents right-clicking an image and choosing Search image with Google Lens; you can select regions, translate text, copy or highlight it, identify objects, and search selected words.
Chrome’s data path is explicit: Google says that Lens searches of web-page content send a screenshot and page data to Google for processing and temporarily store them for that query. Firefox requires Google to be the default search engine, and Mozilla says the feature is being rolled out gradually, so a missing menu item may reflect availability rather than a misconfiguration.

How to copy text from an image in your browser
Copyfish
- Install Copyfish from the Chrome Web Store or Firefox Add-ons. The developer also lists Edge support.
- Open the page containing the image, video frame, or PDF and click the Copyfish toolbar button.
- Drag a rectangle around the text. Include complete characters but avoid nearby graphics where possible.
- Read the overlay, copy the result, or use the translation control. For changing subtitles, use the repeat function on the same region.
- If you need OCR from a desktop window rather than a browser page, install the separately documented UI.Vision XModule and follow its desktop-OCR setup. Do not assume this module is required for ordinary page captures.
Project Naptha
- Install the Chrome extension.
- Open a web image and move the pointer over its lettering until the I-beam cursor appears.
- Drag across the words, then press Ctrl+C (or use the context actions) to copy, edit, or translate.
- If no text is detected, try a larger image, zoom the page, or use Copyfish’s explicit region selection instead.
Google Lens in Chrome
- Right-click the page or image and open the Lens action documented in Chrome Help.
- Select the image or draw a region around the words.
- Use Lens’s copy, translate, or search controls. Remember that Chrome sends the screenshot and page data to Google for processing.
Google Lens in Firefox
- Set Google as Firefox’s default search engine.
- Right-click an image and choose Search image with Google Lens, as described by Mozilla Support.
- Select the text or object and choose copy, highlight, translate, or search. If the command is absent, the gradual rollout may not have reached your installation.
Privacy and data-path checklist
- Copyfish: its listings identify OCR.Space’s free OCR API. Treat selected image regions as data sent through that service rather than assuming local-only processing.
- Project Naptha: local OCR and detection are stated, with an additional remote lookup for a public transcription when text is highlighted. The lookup uses a cryptographic URL hash and excludes cookies and user tokens.
- Chrome Lens: Google documents transmission of a page screenshot and page data, with temporary storage for the query.
- Firefox Lens: the Mozilla page documents the feature and its Google dependency; review Google’s handling terms if the image is confidential.
For private documents, first check whether your organization’s policy permits uploading or querying the image. A browser feature’s convenience does not by itself make the processing local.
What affects OCR results
- Resolution: small, compressed, or blurred lettering produces less reliable recognition than a large, sharp crop.
- Layout: columns, curved text, tables, decorative fonts, and text over busy backgrounds can confuse any OCR workflow.
- Language: the cited listings describe translation and OCR capabilities but do not establish support for every language or script.
- Selection: a tight Copyfish rectangle or Naptha highlight reduces unrelated pixels; Lens region selection serves the same purpose.
- Verification: compare names, numbers, URLs, and punctuation with the source image before reusing extracted text.
Troubleshooting
The extension icon is missing
Open the browser’s extensions menu, pin the tool, and confirm it is enabled for the current profile. Store installations and versions are browser-specific.
Nothing is recognized
Reload the page, zoom in, select a tighter region, and try a clearer source image. For Naptha, ensure the pointer changes to an I-beam. For Lens in Firefox, verify Google is the default search engine and that the feature is available in your rollout.
The result contains wrong characters
Crop out borders and graphics, enlarge the image, and check every number and punctuation mark manually. OCR output is a transcription aid, not proof of correctness; no cited source supplies a comparative accuracy guarantee.

Copyfish desktop OCR does not work
Desktop OCR is an optional path requiring UI.Vision XModule. Install the module documented by Copyfish/OCR.Space, then restart the browser or module if prompted. Ordinary browser-page OCR does not require that add-on.
Translation or search raises a privacy concern
Use the tool whose documented data path fits your policy, or avoid sending the image to a remote service. Naptha’s local-detection statement does not remove its separate remote transcription lookup, and Chrome Lens explicitly sends page data and a screenshot.
Or skip the browser setup
If your actual goal is a clean screenshot for OCR or archiving, ScreenshotNeo returns an image or PDF from one GET request. It accepts cookie and consent banners, removes more than 60 known consent platforms plus newsletter popups and chat widgets before capture, and reports whether a response was a clean page, a bot check, blank page, timeout, failed load, or cache hit. Only clean shots are billed; those failed or blocked outcomes and cache hits cost nothing.
See the complete parameter list in the ScreenshotNeo documentation. Basic cURL:
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
Python:
import requests
r = requests.get("https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot", params={"access_key": "YOUR_API_KEY", "url": "https://stripe.com"}, timeout=90)
open("shot.webp", "wb").write(r.content)
Node.js:
const q = new URLSearchParams({ access_key: 'YOUR_API_KEY', url: 'https://stripe.com' });
const res = await fetch(`https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot?${q}`);
ScreenshotNeo also has an MCP server with take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf for Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients. All plans include the features; 1,000 screenshots per month are free with no card, and paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots. Create a free ScreenshotNeo account.

Bottom line
Use Copyfish for region-based extraction from images, video, and PDFs; Project Naptha for inline selection in web images; and Google Lens when visual search and translation matter as much as copying. Check each tool’s documented data path and verify important text against the original. Because no reviewed source provides a controlled accuracy comparison, test your own image types and languages before standardizing on one extension.
