There is no single best app for every App Store screenshot job. Choose a dedicated screenshot generator when you need device frames, reusable templates, localization, or repeated exports. Choose Canva or Figma when you want hands-on control over typography and composition. Use App Store Connect’s Preview tool for the final check, not as a full design editor. Whichever app you use, start with Apple’s current specifications: you can upload one to ten JPEG, JPG, or PNG screenshots, and files must not contain transparency.
Start with the files Apple will accept
App Store Connect accepts one to ten screenshots for a listing. The accepted formats are JPEG/JPG and PNG; screenshots cannot contain an alpha channel or transparency. Apple publishes separate pixel requirements for iPhone, iPad, Mac, Apple TV, Apple Vision Pro, and Apple Watch, so there is no universal canvas size.

For the iPhone 6.9-inch slot, Apple’s current table includes these portrait dimensions: 1260 × 2736, 1290 × 2796, and 1320 × 2868 pixels, with corresponding landscape orientations. The correct choice depends on the device family and slot you are submitting to. Check the live Apple table immediately before export because accepted dimensions can change.
Use the highest required resolution when layouts match
Apple says that if your interface is unchanged across device sizes and localizations, you can provide only the highest-resolution screenshots required and let the system scale them down. If you want different compositions, copy, or imagery for a particular device, use App Store Connect’s Media Manager to provide device-specific versions.

Know the upload limits and status requirements
Screenshot uploads are made in App Store Connect when the app is in an eligible submission-related status. App previews are optional; screenshots are required, with a minimum of one and a maximum of ten images. Keep the original, uncompressed exports so you can revise text or localization without rebuilding the design.

A June 2026 comparison from Nuvex maps dedicated generators against Canva and Figma, but it is vendor-authored rather than an independent test. Treat claims about speed, quality, rankings, and prices as items to verify in each product’s current documentation.
Dedicated screenshot generators
These products are designed around the recurring problems of App Store artwork: placing a raw screen inside a device frame, adding a headline, maintaining a consistent sequence, and exporting many device or language variants. They are the most convenient category when you publish several apps or update screenshots frequently.
When to choose one
- You need repeatable templates rather than a blank canvas.
- You must produce the same story for several device families.
- You want a workflow that emphasizes import, framing, text, and export instead of general illustration.
- You expect frequent localization or version updates and need to reproduce the set reliably.
Questions to ask before paying
- Does it export every device family you submit, including the exact 6.9-inch dimensions you need?
- Can it create portrait and landscape assets without manually rebuilding each frame?
- Can you replace text and screenshots for each locale without breaking the layout?
- Does it export PNG or JPEG without transparency and at the required pixel dimensions?
- Are batch exports and saved templates included in the current plan?
No independently tested winner, universal speed advantage, or verified price comparison among named generators is established. Test a real five-to-ten-image set, including a second language, before moving a production workflow.

Canva: a practical manual-design option
Canva is a reasonable choice when you want a visual editor and do not need a specialized screenshot pipeline. Build one design per target dimension, import your simulator or device screenshots, add a short benefit-led headline, and duplicate the page for the remaining sequence.
A reliable Canva workflow
- Create a custom design using the exact pixel dimensions from Apple’s current device table.
- Place the app screen at 100% scale or inside a frame that leaves no unintended transparent area.
- Add one concise message describing the feature shown. Keep the message legible at the thumbnail size customers see in search.
- Duplicate the page for each screenshot position, changing the screen and message while preserving type, spacing, and branding.
- Export PNG or JPEG and inspect the file properties. Confirm the dimensions and that transparency is disabled.
- Repeat for each localization and device size that needs a custom composition.
Canva’s suitability here is about manual control and familiarity, not a verified App Store automation feature. Confirm current export behavior in Canva before standardizing your process.
Figma: best when the team already works in components
Figma can make screenshot production efficient for product teams that already maintain app mockups, design tokens, and shared components there. Create frames at Apple’s required dimensions, place the final UI captures, and use components for recurring headlines, badges, gradients, and device frames.

- Create named frames such as iPhone 6.9 portrait — en-US — 01 so exports remain auditable.
- Keep text styles and spacing as shared components; expose only the values that change per screenshot.
- Check that every font used in the marketing layer is available to the person exporting.
- Export at 1× when the frame is already the required pixel size. Do not rely on an arbitrary scale multiplier to fix a wrong frame.
- Open exported files and verify dimensions, color, and transparency before uploading.
Figma gives you control, but it does not remove the need to manage Apple’s device table, localization, and upload limits yourself.

How to plan the screenshot story
Apple Developer’s guidance is direct: “Lead with your value proposition or most compelling feature.” Put the strongest customer outcome first rather than opening with a settings screen.
A useful ten-slot sequence
- Core promise: what the app enables.
- Primary action or fastest path to value.
- The feature that differentiates you from alternatives.
- A proof point such as automation, breadth, or a saved result.
- Another high-frequency workflow.
- Personalization or accessibility, if it matters to the buyer.
- Collaboration, sharing, or export.
- Privacy or security explanation, only if it is a genuine benefit.
- An advanced feature for experienced users.
- A final callout that reinforces the app’s best outcome.
You do not need to fill all ten slots. Submit only screenshots that add a distinct reason to install; repetitive screens dilute the sequence.
Design checks that prevent rework
- Use large type and high contrast; screenshots are often viewed as small thumbnails.
- Keep headlines short enough to survive localization expansion.
- Do not place important copy where a device frame, notch, or rounded corner hides it.
- Use the same visual grammar across all screenshots: headline position, margins, colors, and frame treatment.
- Review the complete set in order, not just individual images.
Export, upload, and preview
- Export one to ten images per app version in PNG or JPEG/JPG.
- Check every file for the exact Apple-listed dimensions for its device family.
- Confirm that no file has transparency or an alpha channel.
- In App Store Connect, open the app’s submission area and upload screenshots for each required localization and device family.
- Use Media Manager when you want device-specific assets instead of relying on downscaling.
- Open Apple’s Preview tool to see how the assets will appear before publication.
Common problems and fixes
“The image has an invalid size”
Cause: The canvas matches a different device family or an outdated dimension. Fix: Recheck Apple’s live table, create a frame at the exact pixel size, and export at 1×.

Cause: A PNG contains an alpha channel, often from a removed background. Fix: Flatten the artwork against a solid background and export again, or use JPEG when appropriate.

The upload looks soft
Cause: A low-resolution source was enlarged or a design was exported at the wrong scale. Fix: Start with the highest required canvas and place screenshots at native resolution; avoid repeatedly resaving JPEGs.
Text is cut off or unreadable
Cause: The headline is too close to a frame edge, too small, or expanded in another language. Fix: Add safe margins, shorten the copy, and preview every localization at thumbnail size.
One device looks wrong while others are fine
Cause: A shared high-resolution asset was downscaled into a composition that needed a device-specific layout. Fix: Create a dedicated Media Manager asset for that device.
