For most iPhone owners, the Apple Watch Series 11 is the best Apple Watch in the 2025 lineup. It offers the best balance of health features, battery life, display quality, comfort, and price. Choose the Apple Watch SE 3 if you want the core Apple Watch experience for less, or the Apple Watch Ultra 3 if you genuinely need long battery life, rugged construction, advanced GPS, diving features, or satellite connectivity.
This guide covers the 2025-generation models: Apple Watch SE 3, Series 11, and Ultra 3. U.S. prices are used unless stated otherwise. All three require an iPhone 11 or later running iOS 26 or later; Apple Watch does not work with Android phones. Exact features and availability can vary by region.
The quick answer
| Best for | Model | U.S. starting price |
|---|---|---|
| Most people | Apple Watch Series 11 | $399 |
| Best value | Apple Watch SE 3 | $249 |
| Battery and outdoor use | Apple Watch Ultra 3 | $799 |
Buy the Series 11 for the best all-round experience. Buy the SE 3 if notifications, workouts, activity tracking, sleep tracking, safety features, and apps are all you need. Buy the Ultra 3 only if its battery, GPS, durability, water-sports capabilities, or satellite features solve a specific problem.
Apple introduced the 2025 models with store availability beginning September 19, 2025. See Apple’s Series 11 launch announcement for launch details.

Apple Watch Series 11: best overall
The Series 11 is the sensible default recommendation. It has the mainstream Apple Watch design, comes in 42mm and 46mm sizes, and provides the advanced health features most buyers are likely to want without the Ultra 3’s bulk and price.
What you get
- Always-on Retina display with up to 2,000 nits of brightness
- ECG capability
- Hypertension notifications
- Sleep tracking, sleep stages, sleep score, and sleep apnea notifications
- Temperature sensing and retrospective ovulation estimates
- Up to 24 hours of Apple-rated normal-use battery life
- Up to 38 hours in Low Power Mode
- Fast charging: up to 80% in about 30 minutes under Apple’s test conditions
- Aluminum or titanium case options
- GPS and GPS + Cellular configurations, including 5G-capable cellular models where supported
The aluminum GPS model starts at $399 in the U.S. GPS + Cellular starts at $499, while titanium configurations start at $699. Check Apple’s current buying page for the exact configuration and regional price.
Who should buy the Series 11?
Choose it if you want one Apple Watch recommendation without overthinking the decision, particularly if you care about health monitoring, sleep tracking, regular workouts, or keeping the watch for several years. Its improved battery rating and quick charging also make it easier to wear overnight than older models with shorter battery life.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
The 42mm version is generally the safer choice for smaller wrists or anyone who prefers a lighter, less conspicuous watch. The 46mm version offers more screen area and can make text and workout metrics easier to read.
Who should skip it?
The Series 11 is unnecessary if you only want basic notifications and activity tracking and are happy to give up ECG and hypertension notifications. In that case, the SE 3 is better value. It is also not the right choice for someone who needs multi-day endurance, scuba-diving support, or satellite communication.
Apple Watch SE 3: best value
The SE 3 is not simply an obsolete budget watch. It uses the same S10 generation of processor as the Series 11 and Ultra 3, adds an always-on display to the 2025 SE generation, and retains much of the software experience that makes Apple Watch useful.
What the SE 3 does well
- Notifications, calls, messages, apps, and Apple Pay
- Activity rings and workout recording
- Heart-rate monitoring and alerts
- Sleep tracking
- Safety features such as Emergency SOS and fall detection, subject to requirements and availability
- Apple’s S10 chip
- 50-meter water resistance for swimming
It starts at $249 in the U.S. That makes it a strong choice for a first Apple Watch, a child or family member where Apple’s setup requirements are satisfied, or a buyer who expects to replace the watch sooner rather than paying for premium materials and additional sensors.

What you give up
The SE 3 does not provide the same advanced health hardware as the Series 11 and Ultra 3. It lacks ECG and hypertension notifications, and it is not the model to choose if you specifically want the broadest health feature set.
Apple’s support specification describes up to 32 hours in Low Power Mode under its stated test scenario. That figure should not be compared directly with the Series 11’s normal-use rating or the Ultra 3’s normal-use rating. Actual endurance depends on features and usage.
When the Series 11 is worth the extra money
Pay more for the Series 11 if you want ECG, hypertension notifications, the brighter and more advanced display, longer rated normal-use battery life, faster charging, additional case choices, or a watch you expect to wear for years. The premium is particularly easy to justify for health-focused users and people who want reliable overnight wear.
Apple Watch Ultra 3: best for battery and adventure
The Ultra 3 is the most capable model, but it is not automatically the best Apple Watch. Its advantages are concentrated in endurance, durability, navigation, and water sports rather than everyday notifications or universally better health readings.

- Up to 42 hours of Apple-rated normal-use battery life
- Up to 72 hours in Low Power Mode
- Dual-frequency precision GPS
- Emergency SOS via satellite, where available
- Customizable Action button and built-in siren
- 100-meter water resistance
- Support for swimming, snorkeling, scuba diving, and high-speed water sports
- Depth gauge rated to 40 meters and water-temperature sensing
Ultra 3 starts at $799 in the U.S., with cellular connectivity included. Its battery advantage is substantial for multi-day trips, long races, camping, hiking, and other situations where regular charging is inconvenient.
The drawbacks are significant
The Ultra 3 is 49mm, about 12mm deep, and weighs approximately 61.6–61.8 grams before the band. It can feel oversized for smaller wrists, be less comfortable for sleep, and look conspicuous as an everyday watch. Titanium and sapphire are more durable materials, but neither makes the watch indestructible.
Do not buy the Ultra 3 merely because it is the most expensive model. If you mainly receive notifications, record gym workouts, track sleep, and carry your iPhone, the Series 11 provides the more balanced experience at a much lower price.

Which Apple Watch is best for health features?
The Series 11 and Ultra 3 share the more complete 2025 health platform. Both include ECG, heart-rate notifications, irregular-rhythm notifications, sleep stages, sleep score, sleep apnea notifications, temperature sensing, cycle tracking with retrospective ovulation estimates, and hypertension notifications.
The SE 3 covers core heart-rate, activity, workout, sleep, and safety functions, but omits selected advanced health hardware. Choose the Series 11 rather than the SE 3 if those omissions matter to you.
These features are wellness and screening tools, not a substitute for medical care. A hypertension notification is not a blood-pressure measurement or diagnosis. Similarly, an irregular-rhythm or other health notification should be discussed with a qualified professional rather than treated as definitive medical evidence.
Blood Oxygen availability
Blood Oxygen availability is affected by region, legal restrictions, model, and sales market. Do not assume that every U.S.-sold Series 11 or Ultra 3 provides the same Blood Oxygen experience as an international model. Check Apple’s regional specifications for the exact watch being purchased.

Apple rates the Series 11 for up to 24 hours of normal use and the Ultra 3 for up to 42 hours. The SE 3’s published Low Power figure is up to 32 hours under Apple’s specified test scenario. These are not guarantees of real-world endurance.
Cellular use, GPS workouts, screen brightness, music playback, frequent notifications, sleep tracking, and battery health can all reduce runtime. Low Power Mode can extend endurance but may change which features are active or how often they operate.

- Bluetooth Calling and Wide Compatibility: Make and answer calls from your watch. Control music and your phone's camera remotely. Works with iPhone iOS 9.0 and above and Android 5.0 and above. A smart, all in one watch for easier living.
- Alexa Built-in and Smart Notifications: Talk to Alexa directly from your wrist. Get real time alerts for calls, messages, and apps like Facebook and WhatsApp. Supports 15 languages. Stay connected without picking up your phone.
For nightly charging, the Series 11 and SE 3 can be adequate. For sleep tracking with fewer charging interruptions, the Series 11 is the more comfortable compromise. For multi-day travel, races, hiking, or camping, the Ultra 3’s normal-use rating offers a meaningful advantage.
Apple says the Series 11 can reach up to 80% in about 30 minutes, while the Ultra 3 can reach up to 80% in about 45 minutes, using the correct charger and Apple’s test conditions. Fast charging means a Series 11 can often be topped up during a shower or morning routine, which can matter more than having the absolute longest battery rating.

GPS models are generally the better value if you usually carry your iPhone. They can use the iPhone’s connection when it is nearby and still track workouts and location in supported situations.
GPS + Cellular models can make calls, send messages, access data, and use connected features away from the iPhone, subject to carrier support and a separate service plan. Cellular can be worthwhile for runners, children, older adults, or anyone who intentionally leaves the phone behind.
It is unnecessary if your iPhone is almost always with you. Calculate the total cost as:
Watch price + cellular service, if applicable + optional AppleCare+ + accessories.

Which Apple Watch is best for specific uses?
For sleep tracking
Series 11 is the best practical choice because it combines a mainstream, relatively light design with improved battery life and fast charging. Choose the Ultra 3 if minimizing charging frequency is more important than comfort and size. Choose the SE 3 for the lowest-cost entry point, provided its missing health features are acceptable.
For running and general fitness
The SE 3 is adequate for casual exercise and gym workouts. The Series 11 is the best balance for regular runners, cyclists, and fitness users. The Ultra 3 is preferable for trail running, endurance events, navigation, and long outdoor sessions because of its battery, brighter display, Action button, rugged construction, and dual-frequency GPS.
There is no basis for claiming that the Ultra 3 produces universally more accurate health readings than the Series 11. Its strongest advantages are endurance and outdoor functionality.

For swimming and diving
The SE 3 and Series 11 have 50-meter water resistance and are positioned for swimming. The Ultra 3 has 100-meter water resistance and adds support for snorkeling, scuba diving, high-speed water sports, a depth gauge, and water-temperature sensing.
“Water resistant” is the correct term; no Apple Watch is permanently waterproof. Water resistance can diminish with wear, and ordinary swimming is not equivalent to scuba diving or high-speed water activity.
For children and older adults
The SE 3 is usually the sensible starting point when the priority is communication, safety, location-related features, and basic activity tracking at the lowest price. Cellular may be useful when the wearer will not carry an iPhone, but setup, Family Setup support, carrier compatibility, and plan costs must be checked first.
For small wrists
Choose the 42mm Series 11 where its screen and feature set fit your needs. The Ultra 3 is available only in a large 49mm case and may be uncomfortable or visually oversized, particularly for overnight wear.
Should you upgrade from an older Apple Watch?
- Series 4 or older: Replacement is easier to justify as compatibility and software support become more important.
- Series 5–7 or first- and second-generation SE: Upgrade is most compelling if battery health has declined or you want newer health features, faster charging, improved displays, or better sleep tracking.
- Series 8–10 or Ultra 1–2: The upgrade case is weaker. Consider upgrading only for a specific need such as better battery life, 5G, hypertension notifications, satellite connectivity, or Ultra 3’s outdoor features.
Do not upgrade solely for the S10 chip if your current watch remains fast and supported. The right decision depends on battery health, the features you actually use, and how long you plan to keep the replacement.
Buying checklist
- Confirm that your phone is an iPhone 11 or later and can run iOS 26.
- Choose between SE 3, Series 11, and Ultra 3 based on use rather than price alone.
- Select the case size: 42mm or 46mm Series 11, or 49mm Ultra 3.
- Decide whether GPS is enough or whether you will leave your iPhone behind often enough to justify cellular.
- Check carrier compatibility and the recurring cellular cost.
- Verify regional availability of ECG, Blood Oxygen, hypertension notifications, and other health features.
- Choose a comfortable band if you plan to sleep or exercise in the watch.
- Compare AppleCare+, warranty, return, and activation terms.
- For older or refurbished models, verify battery health, Activation Lock removal, exact model, return window, warranty, and software compatibility.
Who should buy none of these?
Skip these models if you use Android, have an iPhone older than the supported generation, or only want a basic fitness tracker. They may also be a poor fit if you require week-long battery life without Low Power compromises, dislike wearing a watch overnight, or need a medical diagnostic device rather than wellness and safety features.
