For a home with serious traffic-related gas concerns, the Austin Air HealthMate Plus is the most compelling option here because it pairs particle filtration with a large carbon-and-mineral media bed. For a car, consider the purpose-built IQAir Atem Car. If your main concern is soot and PM2.5, the Blueair Blue Pure 511i Max is a more practical particle-first choice. None of these is a complete exhaust-safety solution: HEPA-style filters target particles, carbon can reduce some gases, and you should never rely on a portable purifier to remove carbon monoxide or compensate for an exhaust leak.
Can an air purifier remove exhaust fumes?
Partly. Vehicle exhaust is a mixture, not one pollutant. It can include soot and fine particles such as PM2.5 and ultrafine particles, as well as gases and volatile organic compounds (VOCs), including nitrogen dioxide, benzene and aldehydes. Carbon monoxide (CO) is a separate, potentially life-threatening hazard.
A high-efficiency mechanical filter can capture airborne particles. Activated carbon or another sorbent may reduce some gases and odors. These are different jobs: a HEPA filter does not, by itself, remove gaseous pollutants, and a carbon stage does not guarantee protection from every exhaust constituent. The EPA notes that gas-filter performance depends on having enough sorbent and that no air cleaner removes every indoor pollutant. EPA guide to air cleaners for the home.
There is no widely used gas-removal rating comparable to particle CADR. Results depend on the gas, concentration, carbon type and quantity, humidity, airflow, contact time and filter age. Product claims about gases should therefore be treated cautiously unless testing details and independent results are available.

Do not rely on a consumer air purifier to protect against carbon monoxide. Common portable air cleaners generally do not effectively remove CO, according to the California Air Resources Board. If a CO alarm sounds or you suspect CO exposure, leave the area and contact emergency services or the appropriate local authority. A purifier is not a substitute for a certified CO alarm or fixing the source.

Best for a home near traffic: Austin Air HealthMate Plus
The HealthMate Plus stands out for gas concerns because Austin Air says it contains up to 15 pounds of carbon and mineral-based adsorption media alongside HEPA media. The company says its impregnated media targets traffic emissions and gases including nitrogen dioxide, sulfur dioxide and VOCs. Those are manufacturer claims; the product page does not establish independently verified removal of every exhaust gas or provide a gas-removal CADR. Its stated five-year filter life applies to normal residential conditions and may not hold in unusually polluted settings.

At 47 pounds, it is better treated as a dedicated-room unit than something to move around regularly. Austin Air also lists the HealthMate Plus Junior from $660 for smaller spaces. Neither model makes source control unnecessary.
Best for a vehicle: IQAir Atem Car
The Atem Car is designed for cabin mounting and combines particle and gas filtration. IQAir lists coverage up to 150 square feet and claims particle removal down to 0.003 microns. That particle claim does not establish complete removal of exhaust gases, and the unit is not a remedy for fumes entering through a damaged exhaust system.
For traffic pollution, use the car’s recirculation setting when appropriate and replace the cabin filter with a compatible particulate-and-carbon option if available for your vehicle. Position a portable unit so its intake and outlet are unobstructed, and follow its mounting and power instructions. If exhaust odor persists inside the cabin, stop treating it as a filtration problem and have the vehicle inspected.

Best for particle-heavy traffic pollution: Blueair Blue Pure 511i Max
If your priority is soot and PM2.5 rather than sustained gas adsorption, the Blue Pure 511i Max offers a more conventional room-purifier approach, with app features and a low listed minimum sound level. Blueair describes its standard Particle & Carbon filter as suitable for particles and light household odors; its SmokeBlock replacement has more carbon. Neither description makes it equivalent to a large carbon bed for persistent exhaust gases.

Mila offers several filter configurations, so check the filter rather than buying on the purifier name alone. The Basic Breather has no carbon and is a poor match for exhaust odors or VOC concerns. The Overreactor has 1.25 pounds of modified granular carbon and is targeted at formaldehyde; this does not mean it addresses every exhaust gas. Mila also lists a 460 m³/h CADR, a particle metric rather than a gas-removal measure.

- Identify the pollutant concern. For soot and PM2.5, prioritize particle filtration and smoke CADR. For persistent chemical odors or smog, look for meaningful carbon mass or other clearly described gas-targeted media. If carbon monoxide is possible, use a CO alarm and investigate the source.
- Check particle performance at a usable fan speed. Prefer independently reported smoke CADR or clearly stated airflow over an unqualified maximum-room claim. A purifier only cleans the air it moves; a setting that is too loud to use may not be practical.
- Inspect the gas-filter details. A thin carbon-coated sheet is generally intended for light odors and has limited sorbent capacity. A granular-carbon cartridge or large carbon bed is more promising for gas adsorption, but is not a guarantee. Look for the amount and type of media, target gases, independent test conditions and replacement guidance.
- Size it for the actual space. Room size, ceiling height, connected open-plan areas and the fan speed you can tolerate all matter. For a car, choose a unit designed and mounted for cabin use rather than improvising with a desktop model.
- Plan for maintenance. Pollution concentration, runtime, fan speed and filter size affect service life. Check prefilters monthly in high-pollution conditions and follow the manufacturer’s cleaning and replacement instructions. Reduced airflow or odor breakthrough can signal an exhausted or overloaded stage; a fading smell does not prove that hazardous gases are gone.
- Avoid intentional ozone generation. Choose mechanical filtration where possible. The EPA warns that ozone is a lung irritant and advises avoiding devices that intentionally produce it. EPA information on ozone generators sold as air cleaners.
CADR is a particle-performance measure. It does not tell you how well a purifier removes nitrogen dioxide, benzene, formaldehyde, carbon monoxide or other gases. A high CADR should not be read as an all-pollutant score. The EPA’s air-cleaner guide explains particle and gas filtration and CADR.

How to size a room purifier
For rooms with eight-foot ceilings, the EPA’s guidance gives these minimum particle CADRs:

A practical shortcut is about two-thirds of the floor area expressed as CADR in cubic feet per minute—for example, about 200 cfm for a 300-square-foot room. The CDC gives this rule for rooms with ceilings up to eight feet; increase airflow proportionally for higher ceilings. CDC ventilation FAQ.

For a room beside a garage, a highway-facing bedroom or a home near heavy diesel traffic, consider more airflow than the minimum so the purifier can run at a quieter setting while still moving useful air. Treat an open-plan area as the full connected space. These sizing figures address particles, not gas-removal capacity.
What to do if you smell exhaust indoors
- Act on a possible immediate hazard first. If anyone has headache, dizziness, nausea, weakness, confusion or other concerning symptoms—or a CO alarm activates—leave the building or vehicle and seek emergency help. Do not wait for a purifier to improve the air.
- Stop or move the source. Do not run an engine in an attached garage, even with the garage door open. A portable purifier is not an exhaust extractor.
- Find the path indoors. Arrange inspection of the vehicle, garage, furnace or other combustion equipment, HVAC system and building openings if fumes recur. Get qualified help where needed.
- Ventilate only when outdoor air is cleaner. Opening a window beside congested traffic can bring more pollution inside. Follow local air-quality and emergency instructions during smoke events or industrial releases.
- Use filtration as a supplement. A correctly sized particle purifier can reduce particles; a substantial sorbent stage may help with some gases. Neither replaces source repair, appropriate ventilation or emergency response.
For central HVAC, the EPA recommends MERV 13 or the highest rating the system can accommodate. A compatible HVAC filter can help with particles when the fan runs, but residential HVAC filtration is generally much better suited to particles than exhaust gases. Check system compatibility before upgrading the filter.
Purifiers and situations to avoid
- Ozone generators: Do not use devices that intentionally generate ozone as air cleaners in occupied spaces. Ozone can irritate lungs and is not a safe exhaust-removal shortcut.
- Unsupported “detox,” plasma or ionizer claims: Do not confuse a technology label with demonstrated exhaust-gas performance. CARB certification is an ozone-emission compliance signal, not a performance endorsement. Its certified-device list distinguishes mechanical and electronic categories; certification does not prove effective exhaust removal.
- Purifiers in garages as a safety measure: Do not use one instead of source capture and outdoor exhaust venting. If fumes enter the home from an attached garage, arrange a professional inspection.
- Any purifier as a CO solution: Carbon monoxide requires source control, alarms and emergency action—not a portable filter.
During a major industrial release, chemical spill or severe smoke incident, a consumer purifier may be inadequate. Follow local shelter-in-place or evacuation directions. For respiratory disease or persistent symptoms, filtration is not treatment; follow advice from a clinician.
