For a neck-worn purifier, choose a fan-and-filter model that directs filtered air toward your face if your priority is airborne particles. The Respiray Wear A+ is the strongest fit in this category on the evidence available here; its filter claims do not mean it reduces your inhaled exposure by the same percentage. For odors and fragrance sensitivity, consider its activated-carbon version. The AirTamer A315 is quieter and claims much longer battery life, but it uses ionization rather than a replaceable HEPA filter. None of these devices should be treated as a substitute for a well-fitting respirator, ventilation, or a properly sized room purifier.

What counts as an air purifier necklace?
The name covers several different products. An ionizer necklace emits charged particles and typically has no fan or replaceable particle filter. A fan-and-filter wearable draws air through a filter and blows it toward the wearer’s nose and mouth. A wearable purifier-mask hybrid, such as LG’s PuriCare design, covers more of the face and incorporates filters. Some pendants simply advertise “negative ions” without publishing enough information to establish what they do.
A necklace hanging below the chin does not form a seal or create a controlled pocket of clean air. With any open design, the practical question is how much filtered air reaches your breathing zone before it mixes with the surrounding air.

Do wearable air purifiers actually work?
There are three different claims to keep separate:
- Filter performance: A mechanical filter can capture particles in the air that passes through it. Respiray says its Wear A+ filter captures 99.9% of particles in the relevant test conditions. That number describes a filter result, not a 99.9% reduction in what the wearer inhales.
- Breathing-zone performance: Airflow rate and outlet position matter, as do fit, head movement, talking, breathing rate, wind and turbulence. If the outlet is pointed away, blocked by clothing or too far from the face, ambient air can dominate what you breathe.
- Health outcomes: A particle-removal figure alone does not prove fewer allergy symptoms, lower infection risk or protection from wildfire smoke or toxic gases. Those outcomes require evidence that directly measures them.
Respiray describes its device as using targeted airflow, HEPA filtration and testing that includes allergen and clinical evaluation. Those are relevant product claims, but they do not establish respirator-level protection in everyday conditions. LG reports HEPA13 filters and product-level test results on regional pages; its specifications and test claims likewise should not be read as a guarantee of protection for every wearer or setting. Wind can disrupt a wearable’s clean-air stream outdoors. Walking quickly, exercising or speaking increases the amount of air you draw in and may increase mixing with untreated air. A still-air result does not settle how the device performs while moving outside.
Best for filtered airflow: Respiray Wear A+
The standard Wear A+ is the most defensible choice here for someone who specifically wants a neck-worn particle filter: it uses a replaceable HEPA filter and fans to direct airflow toward the face, rather than relying on ions to affect nearby particles. Respiray lists USB-C charging, a washable pre-filter and up to eight hours of battery life. Its technical page gives a main-unit weight of 9.2 oz (261 g), airflow of 2.5 CFM (70 L/min) at normal setting and 4.2 CFM (120 L/min) at higher setting, and noise of 45 dBA. These figures are useful for judging wearability, not proof of protection.

Consider it for: mild-to-moderate everyday particle or allergen concerns when unobstructed face wear matters and you accept the limits of an open airflow device. Do not rely on it for: severe smoke, high-risk infection exposure, or any situation that calls for a respirator.
Best for odors and fragrance sensitivity: Respiray Wear A+ with Activated Carbon
This version adds activated carbon to a pre-filter and HEPA filter. Respiray markets it for fragrances, odors, fumes, VOCs and chemical sensitivities, and reports 97.6% filter effectiveness for allergens, particulate matter and other harmful particles. The figure is a manufacturer-reported filter result, not a guarantee that a specific odor or gas will be removed from the air you inhale.

The company lists eight hours of normal airflow or three hours at high airflow, USB-C charging and replaceable filters. Carbon capacity is finite, and performance depends on the specific chemical, the amount of carbon and how much air passes through it. It is not a defense against severe chemical exposure or carbon monoxide. Check that replacement filters are available before purchase. The A315 uses negative-ion technology rather than drawing air through a conventional HEPA filter. AirTamer claims more than 50 hours of runtime, silent operation, no filter replacement, a replaceable ion-emission brush and a three-foot sphere of cleaner air. Treat the “sphere” as a manufacturer marketing claim, not independently established protection around the wearer. The observed official price was $149.99 with a leather travel case; AirTamer lists a two-year warranty.
AirTamer says the A315 produces no measurable ozone and is CARB certified. Those statements are not EPA approval or proof of clinical effectiveness. EPA says it does not certify air-cleaning devices or endorse manufacturers, and notes that ionization evidence is less established than filtration. The A315 product page also warns that pregnant users should not use it because its conductive lanyard uses the body as a ground. Read the A315 product information and AirTamer’s ozone explanation; if you prefer a mechanical filter or do not want an ionizer near your face, this is not the right category.

Mask-style alternative: LG PuriCare, availability permitting
LG’s regional product pages describe a more face-covering wearable with HEPA13 filters, a rechargeable battery, up to eight hours of use on the listed model, USB-C charging and an approximate weight of 94 g. LG also reports filter and product testing for bacteria and viruses. These specifications and results are product- and test-specific, not a promise of infection prevention.

For infection concerns or heavy smoke, a well-fitting, appropriately rated respirator is a more defensible baseline than an open wearable purifier. A neck-worn device may offer comfort and convenience for mild exposures, but that is not the same as verified respiratory protection. For sustained indoor air cleaning, use a suitably sized room purifier and address ventilation and the pollutant source. The EPA says air cleaning complements rather than replaces source control and ventilation: EPA guidance.

Are ionizer necklaces safe?
Ionizers charge particles rather than capturing them in a replaceable filter. Some charged particles may deposit on nearby surfaces, where they can later be disturbed; ionizers may not remove gases or odors. EPA notes that ion generators and other electronic air cleaners can produce ozone under some conditions. A CDC-hosted study of wearable ionization cleaners also found that ozone production and performance varied among devices—evidence to look for device-specific testing, not a basis for declaring every model either safe or unsafe. Read the EPA ionizer guidance and the CDC-hosted study.
For bipolar-ionization products, EPA says the evidence is less established than for filtration and recommends looking for UL 2998 validation where applicable. UL 2998 concerns zero-ozone emissions; it is not a general effectiveness certification. EPA also warns against ozone generators in occupied spaces. People with asthma or other lung conditions should be especially cautious about any device that might emit ozone. Stop using a device if it causes irritation, an unusual odor, headache or breathing discomfort. Follow product-specific warnings; AirTamer’s pregnancy warning for the A315 is one example.
Buying and maintenance checklist
- Identify the mechanism. If you need particle filtration, look for a specified mechanical filter rather than treating “negative ions” as equivalent to HEPA.
- Separate filter efficiency from whole-device performance. Ask whether a percentage refers to a filter test, a product test or air measured in a wearer’s breathing zone.
- Check airflow delivery. Consider outlet direction, distance from your face, clothing obstruction and whether independent breathing-zone testing is published.
- Verify ozone evidence. Prefer a named standard or independent test report over an unqualified “ozone-free” claim. CARB certification is not proof of health effectiveness; EPA does not certify consumer air cleaners.
- Price consumables. Confirm replacement-filter availability, replacement interval, cost and cleaning instructions for pre-filters and housing.
- Check realistic runtime and comfort. Higher airflow may shorten battery life. Compare weight, noise near your face, charging connector and strap adjustment; ensure it stays positioned while you move.
- Keep the outlet clear. Charge before travel, follow the manufacturer’s filter schedule and do not wear it under clothing that blocks airflow.
- Do not use it for carbon monoxide or severe exposure. Use a CO alarm for carbon-monoxide risk; choose appropriate respiratory protection and exposure controls for smoke or infection risk.
There is no verified current independent head-to-head test here that establishes one wearable as the best performer in real-world breathing-zone protection. Prefer products with transparent specifications and testing, and regard broad claims such as “99.9%,” “medical-grade,” “virus protection” or a “clean-air sphere” as incomplete unless the test setup and outcome are clear.
