Best overall: ADATA HD330. It balances capacity, shock protection and ADATA’s stated AES feature. Choose the HD710 Pro when water, dust and drops are the bigger risks, or the slim HV620S for everyday carry. For genuinely secure storage, though, a rugged case is not enough: configure full-volume encryption, keep the recovery key somewhere separate and maintain another backup.
What secure storage needs to protect
“Secure” can mean several different things. Encryption helps stop someone from reading files on a lost or stolen drive. A rugged enclosure can reduce the risk of physical damage. A separate backup helps recover from drive failure, accidental deletion or ransomware. None of these protections replaces the others: a water-resistant drive is not encrypted, and an encrypted drive is still a single copy of your data.

- Confidentiality: use full-volume encryption and protect the password or recovery key.
- Physical durability: select an enclosure suited to the drops, dust or water exposure you realistically expect.
- Recovery: keep another copy offline or separately stored, and test restoring files.
ADATA’s US portable-storage catalog lists the HD330, HD710 Pro and HV620S among its portable hard drives. Availability and configurations can vary by market and retailer.
Compare the three ADATA drives
| Model | Best for | Listed capacities | Interface | Protection and encryption evidence | Main trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| HD330 | Best overall balance | 1TB, 2TB, 4TB, 5TB | USB 3.2 Gen 1 (USB 5Gbps) | Triple-layer construction, shock sensor; datasheet states 256-bit AES | Not the choice for immersion-level water protection |
| HD710 Pro | Outdoor and rugged travel | 1TB through 5TB, depending on configuration | USB 3.1/USB 3.2 Gen 1, as listed in ADATA documentation | IP6X dust protection; water-resistance and drop-test claims; independent encryption recommended | Bulkier than the slim model |
| HV620S | Slim everyday backup | 1TB, 2TB, 4TB | USB 3.2 Gen 1 (USB 5Gbps) | Datasheet states 256-bit AES; slim, scratch-oriented design | Less physical protection than the rugged models |
These are mechanical hard drives, and the interface rating is not a promise of real-world sustained transfer speed. Dimensions, weight and warranty are not included here because they vary by capacity or configuration in the referenced material.

Best overall: ADATA HD330
The HD330 is the most balanced pick for a portable backup drive: ADATA lists capacities up to 5TB, triple-layer protective construction and a shock sensor. Its datasheet also states 256-bit AES encryption. That is useful evidence of an encryption feature, but it does not establish that every file on the drive is automatically protected by full-drive hardware encryption.
Choose it for home or office backups and ordinary travel when you want a degree of impact protection without the HD710 Pro’s more protective enclosure. If water immersion is a realistic risk, the HD710 Pro is the better physical-protection choice. For sensitive files, enable independently verified full-volume encryption regardless of the HD330’s advertised AES feature.
Best for harsh travel: ADATA HD710 Pro
The HD710 Pro prioritizes physical protection. ADATA describes it as IP6X dust-resistant, water-resistant beyond ordinary IP68 requirements, and tested for immersion up to 2 meters for 60 minutes. Its documentation also states 1.5-meter shock resistance and references MIL-STD-810G 516.6 testing. These are manufacturer claims under specified conditions, not a guarantee against every fall, liquid, pressure or handling accident.

With configurations listed up to 5TB, it suits field work, outdoor travel and other situations where dust, water or drops are credible hazards. It is larger and heavier than the HD330, and the available documentation emphasizes durability rather than clearly establishing built-in encryption. Add your own full-volume encryption for confidential data. See ADATA’s HD710 Pro datasheet and its additional product documentation for the stated conditions.
Water resistance depends on the drive being properly sealed, including its port cover; do not expose it with the connector unprotected. An IP rating does not establish protection against every liquid or against damage to files or the internal mechanism.
Best slim option: ADATA HV620S
The HV620S is a more suitable fit for a desk drawer, briefcase or backpack where low bulk matters more than ruggedness. ADATA describes a profile of approximately 11.5mm and lists 1TB, 2TB and 4TB configurations with USB 3.2 Gen 1. Its datasheet states 256-bit AES encryption, but the same caution about encryption scope applies: do not assume every file is protected automatically. Its documented strengths are slimness and everyday portability, not waterproofing or heavy drop protection. Product details are on ADATA’s HV620S page.

How to make an ADATA drive more secure
Windows: encrypt the whole removable drive
- Decide how the drive will be used and choose a compatible file system before formatting. Formatting erases existing data, so copy anything important elsewhere first.
- On a Windows edition that supports it, turn on BitLocker To Go for the removable drive. Availability and interface labels depend on Windows edition and organizational policy.
- Set a strong unlock password and save the recovery key somewhere separate from the drive, such as a secure password manager or another protected location.
- Eject the drive safely after use. Test unlocking it and restoring a file before trusting it with the only backup.
ADATA’s software documentation recommends built-in Windows encryption such as BitLocker for Backup ToGo users. Its software guidance also says Backup ToGo does not itself provide encryption.

macOS and mixed Windows–Mac use
Do not assume ADATA’s Windows utilities provide the same workflow on macOS. ADATA’s Backup ToGo support information documents Windows support, while ADATA support guidance notes that Mac use may require reformatting depending on the model and setup. For a Mac-only drive, use macOS-compatible encrypted storage. If you need the drive to move between Windows and Mac, decide on file-system and encryption compatibility first; native encryption on one platform may not open on the other without additional software. Verify compatibility for your operating-system versions before reformatting.
Keep a backup that can survive a mistake
Keep the working files on your computer, one encrypted copy on the ADATA drive and another copy offline, on a second drive or in a reputable cloud service. Disconnect an offline backup when it is not being updated so ransomware cannot reach it. ADATA says Backup ToGo can support scheduled, complete and incremental backup plans on supported Windows systems, but it does not provide encryption; see its backup-plan documentation. A synchronized backup may also reproduce deletions or ransomware changes, so test recovery rather than relying on file presence alone.
When an external SSD is a better fit
Consider an ADATA external SSD instead if you carry the drive constantly, edit photos or video from it, need quieter operation or want better tolerance of movement and vibration. SSDs are faster, lighter and have no moving mechanical parts, but typically cost more per terabyte. A rugged HDD is still a mechanical drive; its enclosure does not make it equivalent to an SSD for shock tolerance. ADATA lists external SSDs alongside HDDs in its portable-storage range.
Quick Recap
Choose by your main risk
- Capacity, ordinary travel and a balance of features: HD330, paired with full-volume encryption and another backup.
- Dust, water exposure or drops during field travel: HD710 Pro, with separate encryption for confidential files.
- Thinness for a desk, drawer or protected bag: HV620S, kept away from drops and water.
- Irreplaceable files: use two encrypted backups rather than treating any single drive as a complete backup plan.
Handling and failure precautions
- Keep a mechanical HDD still while it is reading or writing; shock protection reduces risk but does not make it indestructible.
- Use the operating system’s safe-eject function before disconnecting, and avoid high heat or direct sunlight. ADATA’s support guidance advises safe removal, avoiding drops and preventing overheating.
- If the drive disappears or fails to mount, try another compatible cable and port before concluding the disk itself has failed; a damaged connector or cable can also block access.
- Protect the encryption password and recovery key separately. Losing them can make data inaccessible, and a protected folder is not the same as full-volume encryption.
- Do not reformat or change encryption systems until files have been copied elsewhere and access to that copy has been verified.
