The LG 38WR85QC-W is the best 38-inch monitor for most buyers in 2026. Its 3840×1600 resolution, 144Hz refresh rate, USB-C with up to 90W power delivery, KVM, HDMI 2.1 and DisplayHDR 600 make it suitable for work, gaming and media. Choose the Dell UltraSharp U3824DW instead if office productivity, IPS Black contrast and Dell’s business-focused support matter more than gaming speed. The 38-inch market is unusually small, so older models such as the Alienware AW3821DW and LG 38WN95C-W are worth considering only when the discount, condition and warranty are clear.

LG listed the 38WR85QC-W at $1,199.99 in the United States on August 16, 2026. Dell’s U3824DW page showed $1,449.99 and limited-stock messaging on the same date. Prices and stock change, so treat those figures as dated price signals rather than permanent MSRPs.
Why the LG 38WR85QC-W is the best overall choice
Most “38-inch” ultrawides use a roughly 37.5-inch viewable panel with a 21:9 aspect ratio and 3840×1600 resolution. That extra 160 vertical pixels over a 34-inch 3440×1440 monitor is useful for long documents, code, spreadsheets and editing timelines, while the width accommodates two or three windows comfortably.
- 144Hz: smoother gaming, scrolling and cursor movement than a 60Hz office display.
- Nano IPS: wide viewing angles and generally quick pixel response, though contrast is below OLED and IPS Black.
- DisplayHDR 600: a meaningful HDR qualification, but not equivalent to OLED or a high-zone full-array display.
- Connectivity: HDMI 2.1, DisplayPort, USB-C video/data and up to 90W charging.
- KVM and speakers: useful for switching keyboard and mouse between two computers and for basic audio.
- Adaptive sync: LG lists NVIDIA G-SYNC compatibility and AMD FreeSync Premium Pro support; actual behavior depends on the input, GPU and settings.
The main drawbacks are price, ordinary IPS-level black performance and the fact that 90W may not fully power a high-performance gaming laptop. LG also notes that achieving maximum refresh rate requires suitable DisplayPort 1.4 or HDMI 2.1-capable hardware.

Best for productivity: Dell UltraSharp U3824DW
The U3824DW is the specialist choice for office-first users. Its IPS Black panel is listed at a 2000:1 contrast ratio, which can make dark interfaces and text-heavy work more comfortable than conventional IPS. It includes a USB-C hub, up to 90W Power Delivery, KVM and Dell’s business-oriented ergonomics and support ecosystem.
Its decisive limitation is 60Hz. Documents, programming and email work perfectly well at 60Hz, but games, fast scrolling and general pointer movement feel less fluid than on the LG. At the observed US price, it also cost more than the faster LG, so its premium is justified mainly by IPS Black contrast, office features and Dell support—not speed or HDR.
What to look for before buying
3840×1600 and roughly 110 PPI
This resolution sits between 3440×1440 and 4K in both workspace and GPU demand. It is sharp enough for most productivity and gaming at normal viewing distance, but a 32-inch 4K monitor has denser text and may suit readers who prioritize maximum crispness.
Refresh rate and graphics requirements
3840×1600 contains about 6.14 million pixels. It is easier to drive than 4K but substantially more demanding than 3440×1440. Performance varies with the game, ray tracing, graphics settings and upscaling. A capable GPU and the correct cable are required for 144Hz; a laptop dock may silently restrict the signal to 60Hz.

USB-C, charging and KVM
USB-C can carry display, USB data and laptop power through one cable, but the host port must support DisplayPort Alt Mode, USB4 or Thunderbolt video. “90W” is an upper limit, not a guarantee that every laptop charges at full speed. Gaming and workstation laptops commonly still need their own adapter.
KVM is not automatically a complete Thunderbolt dock. Verify the number of USB upstream connections, hub speed, whether video-input switching also changes USB devices, and whether webcams, Ethernet and audio switch as expected.
Ergonomics and desk space
These monitors are about 35.2–35.3 inches wide with their stands. Measure desk width and depth, clearance behind the panel, stand footprint and viewing distance. A VESA arm can reclaim space, but it must support the monitor’s weight and mounting pattern. Height, tilt and swivel adjustment are especially valuable on a panel this large.

Gaming, HDR and compatibility caveats
Most modern PC games support 21:9, but not all do perfectly. Older titles may need community fixes; cutscenes can remain 16:9; menus may show borders; and some competitive games restrict ultrawide field of view. Consoles generally target 16:9, so a 38-inch ultrawide is a poor primary console-gaming choice.

HDR 600 on the LG can improve highlights and supported games, but IPS black levels and local-dimming limitations prevent OLED-like contrast. Expect panel-to-panel variation in IPS glow and backlight uniformity.
Older 38-inch models: when a bargain is actually worthwhile
The Alienware AW3821DW, LG 38GN950-B, LG 38WN95C-W and Acer Nitro XR383CUR can be good buys only at a substantial discount. Many are discontinued or available mainly through marketplace, refurbished or leftover inventory. Before paying, confirm:
- new, refurbished or used condition;
- dead-pixel and backlight-bleed policy;
- remaining manufacturer or seller warranty;
- return window and regional support;
- included stand, power brick and cables;
- actual refresh rate, ports and USB-C features.
An older high-refresh monitor without USB-C docking may still suit a desktop gaming PC, but it should not be priced like a current premium model.

38-inch versus other sizes
- 34-inch 3440×1440: cheaper, easier to drive and more widely available; 38-inch wins for vertical workspace.
- 34-inch OLED: better contrast, HDR and response times, often with a smaller footprint; choose it if image quality matters more than 1600-pixel height.
- 40-inch 5K2K: sharper text and more workspace, but usually pricier and more demanding, with fewer high-refresh gaming options.
- 32-inch 4K: higher pixel density and excellent text clarity, but less horizontal room for side-by-side windows.
- 49-inch 32:9: wider than a 38-inch screen and useful as a two-monitor replacement, but needs more desk width and can be less compatible with games and remote-work software.
Setup and troubleshooting checklist
- Check your GPU, laptop or dock for DisplayPort 1.4, HDMI 2.1, DSC and the required refresh rate.
- Use a certified cable and connect directly to the computer when testing 144Hz.
- Set the native 3840×1600 resolution and desired refresh rate in advanced display settings.
- For USB-C, use a full-featured video/data cable and confirm the laptop supports charging through that port.
- For KVM, connect both video inputs and both USB upstream paths, then map each input to its computer in the monitor menu.
- Test games, HDR, USB peripherals, speakers, dead pixels and uniformity during the return period.
If the display is stuck at 60Hz, bypass a low-bandwidth dock, try DisplayPort or HDMI 2.1, replace the cable and check input-specific limits. If USB-C shows video but does not charge, the host port, cable, monitor power setting or laptop wattage requirement is the likely cause.

Is the Dell U3824DW good for gaming?
It can handle casual gaming, but its 60Hz refresh rate makes it a poor choice for buyers who want smooth, high-refresh gaming.
