BeReal’s friend-adding feature is not confirmed to be broken only on Android. The fastest way to isolate a contact-discovery problem is to search for the person’s exact BeReal username. If that works, check contact permissions and BeReal’s Privacy settings; if you cannot add anyone, update and restart the app, test another network, then contact BeReal if the issue persists.
First identify what is failing
“Add Friends” problems can mean different things: a person is missing from search, the contact list is empty, the Add button does nothing, or a request appears to send but the recipient never sees it. Check whether the problem affects one person or everyone. That distinction helps separate contact or account settings from an app, network, or service problem.
- One person is missing: verify their exact username and check whether phone-number discovery or a pending request is involved.
- All contacts are missing: check contact permissions and BeReal’s Contact sync setting.
- Add fails for everyone: test username search, update and restart the app, and try another network.
Add the person by exact username
BeReal supports adding friends by username, through synced contacts, and by invitation. Username search is the best first test because it does not depend on your address book or phone-number matching. BeReal’s friend invitation instructions give this route:
- Open BeReal and tap the friend icon in the top-left corner.
- Tap the search bar and enter the friend’s exact username.
- Check that the account is the right person, then tap Add.
Ask your friend to send their username from inside BeReal rather than relying on a display name, nickname, or an old contact entry. Check punctuation and numbers, and make sure both of you are using the intended accounts. If the request does not work one way, ask the other person to search for and add you instead.

If a contact does not appear
BeReal’s contact recommendations depend on address-book access, contact syncing, and a match between the saved phone number and the number associated with the other account. A contact section may be empty if none of your synced contacts use BeReal or if the matching users have already been added. A missing contact is not proof that the person has no BeReal account.
Turn on contact access
First check BeReal’s own setting: open your profile → Settings → Privacy and turn on Contact sync. BeReal says disabling contact sync removes contact-based recommendations, but people can still find you through username search or mutual friends. See its contact syncing guidance.

Then confirm the operating system lets BeReal access your contacts:

- Android: Open Settings → Apps (or Apps & notifications) → BeReal → Permissions → Contacts, then allow access. Labels vary by phone. Reopen BeReal and try again.
- iPhone: Open Settings, scroll to BeReal, and turn on Contacts. Reopen the app.
Permission only lets BeReal use your address book for discovery; it cannot guarantee a match. The friend may have changed numbers, use a different number or account, or have an outdated or incorrectly formatted number saved in your contacts. Check the country code for international numbers and allow the app to refresh. On Android, battery-saving or background-data restrictions may also interfere with refreshing a list.

Check phone-number discovery
Contact syncing and phone-number discovery are separate controls. If the other person has disabled discovery by number, their account may not appear through your contacts even when you have their number saved. They can check profile → Settings → Privacy → Find me by my phone number. BeReal explains this option in its phone-number discovery settings. Username search can still work when this setting is off.
BeReal says it does not share users’ phone numbers with other users. Enabling discovery allows an account to be found through a phone number; it does not make the number publicly visible.

If the Add button spins or does nothing
Try these steps in order. They are standard mobile-app recovery measures, not fixes BeReal guarantees:
- Force-close BeReal and reopen it.
- Switch from Wi-Fi to mobile data, or the other way around. Temporarily disable a VPN, private DNS, ad blocker, or network filter to test whether it is interfering.
- Update BeReal in the Google Play Store or Apple App Store, then restart your phone.
- Try adding someone by exact username rather than through contacts.
- Android only: Open Settings → Apps → BeReal → Storage (or Storage & cache) and tap Clear cache. Do not choose Clear data as an early step; it can remove local app state and make signing back in harder.
- If the problem remains, consider reinstalling BeReal only after confirming you know how to sign in to the same account. Removing the app is not the same as deleting an account, but reinstalling can still create account-access trouble if you cannot recover your login.
Use the symptom to choose your next step

Check device compatibility
BeReal’s Help Center minimum requirements state Android 8 or newer with Google Play Services, and iOS 15 or newer. A device can still be unable to install or run a current release if the app store lists a newer requirement or if its services or hardware are not supported. Check the compatibility information in the store for your device and region, and use the current store update rather than relying on a version number or a static minimum alone.

When to contact BeReal
Contact support if username search fails for every account, Add remains unresponsive after updating and restarting, requests repeatedly disappear, or the problem continues across networks and after reinstalling. Also contact support if you cannot sign back into your account. BeReal’s Help Center provides support routes; the Google Play listing identifies [email protected] as a support contact.
Include your BeReal username, phone model, Android or iOS version, BeReal app version, the exact error text, and when the failure happened. Say whether it affects one person or everyone and whether username search and contact syncing were tested separately. Screenshots or a short screen recording can make the failure easier to diagnose.
