The Beelink Mate Mini is an external storage dock for the 2024 Mac mini that can add two M.2 NVMe SSDs, plus USB-A, SD, 2.5GbE and audio ports. Choose Model A if you want two drives and more capacity; choose Model B if you want one SSD with a wider PCIe x4 connection. Neither upgrades the Mac mini’s internal storage, and the advertised 80Gbps connection is not a promise of 80Gbps of sustained SSD performance.
It is most appealing as a permanent desktop expansion for people who want local storage and extra connectivity in a compact footprint. If all you need is an occasional extra drive, a conventional enclosure or portable SSD is simpler.
What the Mate Mini adds
The Mate Mini is a 127 × 127 × 16mm aluminum dock, about 250g without its rubber feet, designed to sit with a Mac mini. It connects to the computer over USB-C and provides external NVMe storage and additional ports. Beelink advertises compatibility with the Mac mini M4 and says it also supports computers with Thunderbolt 3, Thunderbolt 4, Thunderbolt 5 or USB4; actual speed depends on the host, port, cable and installed SSD. Check Apple’s specifications for your exact Mac mini rather than assuming every generation has the same connectivity.
The dock does not replace or enlarge the Mac mini’s internal SSD. macOS sees the installed drives as external volumes. You can keep project files, media libraries or other data there, but the internal system volume remains separate, and external storage needs to be connected and mounted when you use it.

Beelink’s current listing describes an 80Gbps USB-C/Thunderbolt 5 interface. Treat that as an advertised interface rate, not a guaranteed storage benchmark. The host may negotiate a lower link rate, and the dock’s internal drive arrangement, SSD behavior and workload all affect actual throughput.
Model A or Model B?

Beelink advertises up to 16TB total for Model A. That is a manufacturer capacity claim, not a guarantee that every pair of 8TB drives will fit, cool properly or perform alike. Confirm supported drive capacity and physical clearance for the exact version before buying. Beelink also advertises up to 6,228MB/s read for Model B; this is a claimed figure, not an independently verified sustained result.
The specified drives are M.2 2280 PCIe NVMe SSDs, with PCIe 3.0, 4.0 and 5.0 support listed. Do not assume M.2 SATA drives will work. A PCIe 5.0 SSD may be compatible without reaching PCIe 5.0-class speeds through the dock, so a cooler, less expensive PCIe 4.0 drive may be the more sensible buy—especially for Model A.

Performance: what the review actually tested
In its July 2025 review, ServeTheHome tested the dual-drive Mate Mini with two WD Black SN850X 4TB SSDs. Both drives were recognized and usable. The review found that adding a second drive left the first slot’s performance roughly unchanged—about a 3% difference, described as within test-run variation—while the second drive ran more slowly because the dual-drive design divides PCIe resources.
ServeTheHome judged the dual-drive performance adequate for demanding photo and video work, and discussed high-end 12K DCI 60 ProRes 422 HQ as a workload reference. That assessment applies to the tested setup and review’s workload discussion, not every SSD, Mac or editing project. Results vary with drive model and capacity, cache, temperature, file size, filesystem, negotiated host link and whether both drives are busy at once. The review’s measurements are not a promise of a particular speed for your setup.
If your priority is one fast working volume, Model B’s single PCIe x4 slot is the more direct choice. If capacity and two separate volumes matter more, Model A trades some per-drive bandwidth for a second bay. The 80Gbps headline alone does not settle that decision.

Ports, networking and power
Beelink lists two USB-A 3.0 ports, an SD 4.0 card reader, 2.5GbE Ethernet, a 3.5mm audio jack, the high-speed USB-C host connection and a USB-C PD input. This makes the dock more useful than a storage enclosure alone for photographers with card-based workflows, users with USB-A accessories, and desks that need wired networking.

It can improve transfers to a compatible NAS or network over gigabit Ethernet, but only if the rest of the path—switch or router, cabling and destination storage—also supports the faster link. It is not 10GbE, and it will not make a gigabit network faster by itself. The dock also consumes a high-speed port on the Mac; its other connections are not independent full-speed Thunderbolt ports.
The dock can draw power from the Mac mini for lower-power use. Beelink says an external PD adapter is needed when attached peripherals exceed 15W. Consider supplemental power if you use multiple SSDs under sustained load or connect bus-powered accessories. The PD jack is an input for the dock; it does not power the Mac mini.

Installing SSDs and setting them up in macOS
Installing a drive requires opening the enclosure, so this is less convenient than a tool-free portable SSD. In its reviewed hardware revision, ServeTheHome reported removing about eight screws, including access beneath the rubber feet, and taking off the cooling assembly to reach the SSD positions. Layouts can vary by revision; follow the instructions for the unit you receive and avoid forcing the cover or heatsink.
- Shut down the Mac mini, disconnect the dock and place the dock upside down on a clean, soft surface.
- Remove the rubber feet as needed to reach the screws, then remove the bottom-cover screws and open the enclosure carefully.
- Remove the cooling assembly if required to reach the M.2 slots.
- Insert each M.2 2280 NVMe SSD at the correct angle and secure it with its retaining screw. Check that the drive sits flat and does not interfere with the cooling assembly.
- Reinstall the cooling assembly, cover and feet. Connect the dock to the Mac with the supplied or otherwise suitable cable.
- In macOS, open Disk Utility, choose View > Show All Devices, select the physical external SSD and choose Erase.
- Choose APFS for a Mac-only working volume, or exFAT if you need to exchange files with Windows. Select GUID Partition Map where the scheme option is shown, name the volume and confirm. Repeat for the second drive.
Disk Utility wording and options can vary by macOS release. Formatting erases the selected drive, so verify that you have selected the new external SSD, not the Mac’s internal disk. APFS is generally the natural choice for Mac-only storage. exFAT is convenient for cross-platform exchange, but has different metadata, permissions and durability behavior. Neither format is a backup.
You can leave the two SSDs as separate volumes. Do not assume the dock supplies hardware RAID: Beelink’s listed storage configurations describe drive slots and PCIe paths, not a guaranteed RAID mode. A striped software array can make one larger volume and improve aggregate throughput in some workloads, but failure of either drive can make the whole array unavailable. A mirror can improve availability while reducing usable capacity, but it is still not a backup. For valuable media, separate working storage and a second backup destination are usually easier to reason about.

Placement, cooling and everyday trade-offs
The square chassis is intended to match the Mac mini’s footprint, but stacking involves a practical choice. Putting the Mate Mini underneath keeps it out of sight but can obstruct access to the Mac mini’s underside power button. Putting it on top preserves access to that button, though the dock is visible above the computer. ServeTheHome noted that the colors are not an exact match; Beelink’s current page recommends top placement. Keep vents clear in either arrangement.
The dock has active cooling for the SSDs, which is useful when storage is working hard but adds a fan, a moving part and a possible source of noise or dust. The research available here does not establish a measured noise level or prove which stacking arrangement runs cooler. If you are sensitive to fan noise, or need a completely silent setup, account for that uncertainty before choosing a fan-cooled dock.
ServeTheHome’s review unit included two Thunderbolt 5 bridge cables for a tidy stacked arrangement. The current product listing may describe included cables differently, so check the contents for the precise SKU and region you are buying. A flexible cable can be preferable if you plan to place the dock beside the Mac mini or connect it to another computer.

Is it better than the alternatives?
- Compared with a larger internal SSD: Apple’s internal storage is integrated and avoids another cable and mounted volume. Mate Mini expansion is external and modular, and may offer more capacity per dollar, but a fair cost comparison needs current prices for the exact Mac mini configuration, dock, SSDs, tax and region. Do not rely on an old review-era saving.
- Compared with a conventional Thunderbolt or USB4 NVMe enclosure: A single-drive enclosure is usually the simpler route if you already own an SSD or only need one external volume. The Mate Mini adds the second bay in Model A, extra ports and a Mac-mini-sized desktop form.
- Compared with a portable SSD: A portable drive is easier to carry and often simpler to plug in and use. The Mate Mini suits a more permanent desk setup, not a pocketable one.
- Compared with a NAS: A NAS is better suited to centralized, multi-device access and a broader backup or redundancy plan. It requires networking and setup; local NVMe storage is not the same thing as shared network storage. The Mate Mini’s 2.5GbE port can help connect a Mac mini to a capable network, but does not turn the dock into a NAS.
Who should consider it?
Consider Model A if you want two local NVMe volumes for a photo library, video assets, project files or other large data, and accept that the drives share bandwidth. Consider Model B if one fast external volume matters more than fitting a second SSD. The dock’s USB-A, SD reader and 2.5GbE may be a large part of its value if those ports solve real desk problems.
Look elsewhere if you need portable storage, only need occasional extra space, want a simple plug-and-play drive, require a quiet accessory, or expect external storage to behave exactly like Apple’s internal SSD. It is also a poor fit if you need multi-user storage or a complete redundancy strategy; use a suitable NAS or backup system for those needs.
Before you buy
- Confirm you are buying Model A (two PCIe x2 drives) or Model B (one PCIe x4 drive), not just a listing that says “Mate Mini.”
- Confirm the host Mac and port support the connection you intend to use, and check which cable is included.
- Choose M.2 2280 PCIe NVMe drives; verify capacity and physical fit rather than relying solely on the 16TB marketing maximum.
- Decide whether you need a PD adapter for the drives and attached peripherals.
- Check current price, stock or presale status, shipping estimate, included accessories, warranty and return terms for your region. The ServeTheHome review recorded $179 in July 2025; Beelink’s listing showed a $119 base variant and presale shipping within 30 days when checked in August 2026. These are dated, variant-specific signals, not guaranteed current prices or availability.
- Plan a separate backup for any data you cannot afford to lose. Two SSDs inside one dock do not make a backup.
If a drive disappears after sleep, wake or an accidental disconnect, first check whether the dock appears in System Information > Thunderbolt/USB4 and whether the drive appears in Disk Utility with Show All Devices enabled. Reconnect it with the supplied or a suitable certified cable, try supplemental PD power when multiple peripherals are attached, and test each SSD separately. If needed, try another Mac port and check for macOS updates and Beelink support guidance. These steps help isolate cable, power, seating, drive and host issues; they do not imply a universal Mate Mini defect.
