BCLK TSC Hardware Fixup is a specialized BIOS/UEFI control for systems using elevated base-clock (BCLK) frequencies. It concerns how the platform handles the processor’s Time Stamp Counter (TSC) during an internal copy operation—not CPU performance, Windows time synchronization, or hardware repair.

If your system runs at the stock BCLK, leave the setting at Auto or its motherboard default. If you are experimenting with BCLK overclocking, keep the default initially and test the alternate setting only when the motherboard documentation or reproducible timing symptoms justify it.

What BCLK TSC Hardware Fixup means

BCLK, or base clock, is a reference frequency from which the processor and other platform clocks are derived. Increasing it can affect the CPU, memory, cache/ring, DMI, PCIe, and other clock domains unless the motherboard provides suitable clock isolation or asynchronous BCLK operation.

TSC stands for Time Stamp Counter. It is a processor counter that operating systems, hypervisors, schedulers, and performance tools may use as a high-resolution time source.

The BIOS wording refers to handling TSC data during a low-level transfer or copy from PMA to APIC. Motherboard manuals do not fully document the underlying register-level mechanism, so it is more accurate to describe this as an internal processor/platform TSC-copy operation than to claim a specific undocumented implementation.

ASUS exposes the control as BCLK TSC HW Fixup and describes it with wording about enabling or disabling the fixup-disable behavior during TSC copying from PMA to APIC. The wording is awkward and can make the visible Enabled or Disabled choice appear logically inverted. MSI exposes a similarly purposed control called Core HW Fixup During TSC Copy and explicitly places it in the context of BCLK overclocking. These labels indicate a related purpose, but they should not be assumed to be bit-for-bit identical across vendors. ASUS documentation · MSI documentation

Is it a hardware repair?

No. Despite the word “Fixup,” this is not a repair for a damaged CPU, failing motherboard, defective clock generator, or depleted CMOS battery. It is a firmware-controlled compatibility or correction mechanism associated with TSC handling during BCLK-related operation.

Does it improve performance?

No. The setting does not directly increase CPU frequency, multiplier, voltage, memory speed, or benchmark performance. Any performance increase comes from the separate BCLK overclock. The fixup control may influence timekeeping behavior or stability in a particular BCLK configuration, but it is not an overclocking performance switch.

Who needs to care?

System or use case What to do
Stock CPU and stock BCLK Leave Auto or the factory default unchanged.
CPU-ratio overclocking with BCLK near standard Usually leave the setting at its default; it is primarily associated with altered BCLK operation.
BCLK overclocking Start with the board’s default, then test the alternate state only if needed.
Virtual machines or hypervisors Pay particular attention to timekeeping, suspend/resume, and guest-clock behavior after changing BCLK.
Workstation motherboard Do not assume the option indicates aggressive-overclocking support. ASUS also documents it on the Pro WS W680-ACE series.

ASUS documents the option across several Intel motherboard families, including ROG Z790, Intel 600-series, and W680 boards. Its presence alone does not prove that a particular CPU, board, or BIOS revision supports a desirable BCLK-overclocking configuration. ASUS 600-series manual · ASUS W680 manual

Should BCLK TSC Hardware Fixup be enabled or disabled?

There is no universal value that applies to every motherboard, processor, BIOS revision, and BCLK mode. The available vendor manuals document the control but do not establish an “always enable” or “always disable” rule.

  • At stock BCLK: use Auto or leave the existing default unchanged. If the board offers only Enabled and Disabled, retain the factory-selected value.
  • With BCLK overclocking and no symptoms: begin with the manufacturer default. Do not change the option simply because it exists.
  • With reproducible timing or resume problems after raising BCLK: test the alternate state while keeping every other setting identical.
  • With PCIe, storage, memory, or boot instability: return BCLK and related clocks to default. This option cannot correct a broader clock-domain problem.

Because ASUS’s description refers to enabling or disabling the disable behavior, the words “Enabled” and “Disabled” should not be casually translated into “the correction is active” and “the correction is inactive.” Follow the exact guidance for your model and BIOS revision where available.

  1. Reboot and enter UEFI/BIOS setup, commonly with Delete or F2.
  2. Switch to Advanced Mode if the firmware opens in a simplified view.
  3. Open the CPU overclocking menu, such as Ai Tweaker, Extreme Tweaker, or OC.
  4. Open the advanced BCLK-related controls.
  5. Find BCLK TSC HW Fixup, Core HW Fixup During TSC Copy, or a similar label.
  6. Record the original value and save a known-good BIOS profile.
  7. Change only this option for a troubleshooting comparison, then save and reboot.

There is no normal Windows or Linux command, registry value, bcdedit switch, or Intel utility command that directly changes this motherboard firmware control.

How to test it properly

1. Establish a baseline

Record the motherboard model, BIOS version, CPU, operating system, virtualization status, BCLK, CPU ratio, memory ratio, voltages, and power limits. Confirm that the system boots, keeps time, and resumes from sleep normally at stock BCLK.

2. Change one variable at a time

If testing BCLK, increase it in small steps and document the CPU ratio, memory divider, voltages, and any PCIe/DMI settings. A comparison is meaningful only when the fixup option is the sole change between two otherwise identical configurations.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

3. Test beyond a short CPU benchmark

Check cold boot, warm reboot, sleep and resume, operating-system timekeeping, virtualization, and a sustained CPU-and-memory workload. Also watch for PCIe or USB errors, storage-controller problems, device re-enumeration, and inconsistent benchmark timing.

Compare these configurations:

  1. Stock BCLK with the default fixup state.
  2. Elevated BCLK with the default fixup state.
  3. Elevated BCLK with the alternate fixup state.

If a problem disappears only when BCLK returns to standard, BCLK is the likely trigger; that does not prove the fixup option was the sole cause.

Symptoms that may justify investigation

Possible clues include incorrect elapsed-time measurements, clock-source changes or drift, inconsistent benchmark timing, sleep/resume or reboot anomalies, and virtualization timing irregularities that begin only after BCLK is raised. These are diagnostic clues, not a definitive symptom list caused by this setting.

Do not confuse this control with Windows time synchronization or the RTC. Windows time services correct wall-clock time through software and network or domain mechanisms. The RTC is a separate platform clock, and a bad CMOS battery or incorrect time zone will not normally be fixed by changing TSC hardware behavior.

For a Windows clock problem, first check automatic time, time zone, the Windows Time service, dual-boot configuration, and hypervisor behavior. For Linux clocksource warnings, compare kernel logs at stock and elevated BCLK rather than immediately forcing a different clocksource; an override can hide the underlying firmware or hardware configuration problem.

When this setting is not the answer

  • The system is unstable even at stock BCLK.
  • Memory training fails or ordinary memory tests report errors.
  • PCIe devices disappear, reset, or produce errors.
  • NVMe or other storage becomes unreliable.
  • The CPU crashes under a normal workload because of voltage, temperature, or ratio settings.
  • The BIOS is outdated or the current firmware changed microcode, BCLK limits, or memory-training behavior.

Raising BCLK can affect PCIe, DMI, memory, and other interfaces on platforms without effective isolation. A machine may pass a short CPU benchmark while still suffering from storage corruption, intermittent bus errors, cold-boot failures, or virtualization problems.

Recovery steps

If the system will not boot

  1. Power the system off completely.
  2. Use the motherboard’s safe-boot or recovery feature if available.
  3. Restore the previous BIOS profile or return the fixup, BCLK, and related settings to default.
  4. If BIOS setup remains inaccessible, clear CMOS using the motherboard manual’s procedure.
  5. Load defaults and reapply settings gradually, testing after each change.

If timing problems appear

Return BCLK to its standard value and reboot fully. If the issue disappears, leave the platform at stock or retest with a board-specific BCLK configuration. Avoid raising voltage merely to compensate for unexplained timing behavior.

Alternatives to BCLK overclocking

Where supported, multiplier-based CPU overclocking generally isolates the change more effectively from platform clock domains than raising BCLK. It still carries thermal, voltage, stability, and warranty considerations, but it reduces the number of buses and devices potentially affected.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Manufacturer automatic overclocking profiles can configure ratios, voltage, power limits, and memory behavior together. They are convenient, not automatically safer, and can make it harder to identify which setting caused a problem.

A BIOS update may improve BCLK behavior or address platform bugs, but it is not guaranteed to solve a TSC issue. Verify the exact motherboard model, read the release notes, and document your existing configuration first. Firmware documentation may also warn about changing microcode from the current version; use the latest vendor-supported microcode unless you understand the security and compatibility consequences. See ASUS’s BIOS documentation.

Bottom line

BCLK TSC Hardware Fixup is a narrow, motherboard-specific firmware control for TSC handling during BCLK-related operation. Leave it at the default for stock systems, and do not treat it as a performance feature, Windows clock repair, or general stability cure. BCLK overclockers should use controlled A/B testing and return BCLK and related platform clocks to default if PCIe, storage, memory, boot, or timing problems appear.
