Bandicoot is a remotely operated manhole-cleaning robot developed by Kerala-based Genrobotics. Its purpose is to remove waste without sending a sanitation worker into a confined, potentially toxic space. That makes it an important safety tool—but not proof that hazardous sanitation work has ended. Its impact depends on regular use, maintenance, enforcement and a just transition for the workers whose jobs it is meant to make safer.

Why a robot for manholes matters

Entering a sewer or septic tank can expose workers to toxic gases, drowning, asphyxiation and infection. The danger is compounded by the history and stigma of sanitation work, which has been closely tied to caste discrimination. A ban on dangerous work cannot make it disappear if municipalities and contractors lack equipment, oversight and safe ways to clear blockages.

It is important to distinguish manual scavenging from hazardous sewer cleaning. Under India’s legal framework, manual scavenging refers to handling human excreta from insanitary latrines. Hazardous cleaning of sewers and septic tanks is a related but distinct problem. The 2013 Prohibition of Employment as Manual Scavengers and their Rehabilitation Act prohibits manual scavenging and restricts hazardous sewer and septic-tank cleaning, subject to specified safety requirements. The continuing toll shows why mechanisation and enforcement both matter. The government reported 471 sanitation-worker deaths linked to hazardous sewer and septic-tank cleaning between 2019 and October 31, 2025 (Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment, December 2025).

Who built Bandicoot?

Bandicoot came from Genrobotics, a robotics company based in Thiruvananthapuram. Reporting on its early development identifies Vimal Govind as the company’s CEO and describes the project as the work of four engineers who turned their attention to the risks sanitation workers face. The available reporting does not reliably establish all four founders’ names and engineering specialities, so it would be misleading to fill those details in by inference.

The team had been working in robotics, including powered exoskeletons and human-controlled machines, before focusing on sanitation. After studying the dangers of sewer cleaning, it began developing Bandicoot in 2018. Kerala Startup Mission provided early support, and the machine was developed for the Kerala Water Authority, according to contemporary reporting by The Indian Express. The company and news coverage have described Bandicoot as a first-of-its-kind or first Indian manhole-cleaning robot; such “first” claims should be attributed rather than treated as independently settled global rankings.

How the robot is meant to work

The operating idea is straightforward: put the machine into the manhole rather than a person. A sanitation crew secures the work area and positions the deployment stand over the opening. The robot is lowered into the chamber, where an operator uses camera feeds to inspect conditions and control an articulated arm. A bucket mechanism gathers sludge, silt and other solid or semi-solid debris so it can be lifted out for handling and transport.

  1. The crew identifies the chamber, secures the opening and manages the surrounding work area.
  2. A deployment stand is positioned and the robot is lowered into the manhole.
  3. The operator uses the camera systems to assess the chamber and guide the arm.
  4. The arm and bucket collect waste that the machine can reach and lift.
  5. The robot is brought back to the surface; the removed waste still needs safe transport and disposal.

Genrobotics describes the system as including a robotic arm, cameras, bucket and pneumatic components. It lists an operating depth of up to 12 metres and an IP68 waterproof design. These are manufacturer specifications, not independent performance findings; actual use will depend on chamber geometry, access, waste conditions and operating procedures. The product details are on the Bandicoot product page.

“No human entry” does not mean “no human work.” People still deploy and operate the machine, supervise the site, maintain equipment, manage traffic and handle the waste after removal. Nor does a robot guarantee that every blockage can be cleared remotely. Irregular chambers, narrow or damaged openings, compacted waste, roots, cables or conditions beyond the arm’s reach may limit what it can do. The key safety question is what the crew does when the machine cannot complete the job—and whether anyone is then sent inside.

From Kerala development to wider deployment

Bandicoot has moved beyond an early prototype, but its public milestones need to be read according to what they establish. A launch or demonstration shows that a machine was presented; it does not by itself prove routine use, uptime or avoided human entries.

  • 2015: Contemporary reporting says Genrobotics was founded.
  • 2018: Bandicoot was developed, with early support in Kerala and work for the Kerala Water Authority. Bandicoot 2.0 was publicly launched in Kerala that year.
  • 2022: Genrobotics was selected among the Top 10 startups in the Swachhata Startup Challenge, according to company news.
  • 2023–24: The national NAMASTE scheme set out a broader policy approach to mechanised sanitation and worker safety.
  • June 2024: Genrobotics reported that Bandicoot Mobility+ units had facilitated the cleaning of more than 5,000 manholes in Chennai.
  • August 2024: The company announced Bandicoot Mini, a smaller drain-cleaning version.

As of August 2026, Genrobotics says Bandicoot operates in 19 states and three Union Territories, serving more than 120 cities and 140 clients. Those are company-reported reach figures, not independently audited counts of machines in routine service. A deployment total is most useful when paired with operating logs, maintenance records and the number of jobs completed without human entry.

What the robot can—and cannot—solve

Bandicoot is most useful where a chamber is accessible, the equipment fits, crews are trained and the municipality can maintain the machine and manage the waste. Repeated cleaning routes may make equipment ownership or a service contract practical. But a robot is a poor substitute for planning when a site is inaccessible, the chamber is unsuitable, there is no maintenance support or the machine cannot handle the blockage.

Mechanisation also cannot repair deficient sewer infrastructure, guarantee that contractors follow the law, or ensure that removed waste reaches safe treatment and disposal. Safety has to cover the whole job: securing the road and opening, operating lifting equipment correctly, protecting workers from contamination, having a retrieval and emergency procedure, and documenting any case where a person enters.

Genrobotics describes its “Mission Robohole” approach as a move from manholes to “machine holes” and says sanitation workers can be trained as robotic operators. That is a meaningful possibility, but a company’s stated model is not evidence that every deployment has improved wages, employment security or benefits. Worker testimony and municipal records are needed to establish whether people are being trained and retained, displaced, or moved to other hazardous tasks.

Technology needs a worker and policy plan

The government’s NAMASTE scheme, launched in 2023–24, aims to prevent hazardous cleaning and direct contact with human waste while supporting worker profiling, safety training, formalisation, emergency-response sanitation units and mechanisation. Its framework connects equipment with training and worker support rather than treating a machine as the entire intervention (NAMASTE scheme information).

The law and policy direction also put pressure on public authorities to mechanise sanitation work. A 2023 Gazette amendment included provisions concerning conversion of manholes into machine holes and government agencies’ contracting practices. Their existence should not be confused with proof that the requirements have been implemented everywhere. In July 2026, the government reported 332 sanitation-worker deaths in 18 states and Union Territories from January 2021 through June 2026 (official statement). These figures are reported deaths, and the date range and official category matter; they are not a measure of Bandicoot’s performance.

A credible assessment of a city’s deployment would ask how many units are operational, how many jobs they complete, how often they require repair, and what happens when they fail or cannot reach the obstruction. It would also ask how many human entries were avoided, who is trained to operate the equipment, whether those workers have secure terms and protective equipment, and where the extracted waste goes. Purchase announcements and demonstrations cannot answer those questions on their own.

The measure of success

Bandicoot represents a significant attempt to replace dangerous entry into manholes with remote mechanical work. Its spread, if sustained and properly supported, can reduce exposure in jobs the machine is suited to. But it cannot by itself end manual scavenging or all hazardous sanitation work in India. That requires enforcement of the law, reliable municipal procurement and maintenance, emergency procedures, safe waste handling, and training and rehabilitation that protect workers’ livelihoods as well as their lives.
