The fastest way to diagnose an AW2720HF problem is to separate the monitor from the computer. If the monitor can display its own no-signal message and built-in color diagnostics, focus on the cable, input, graphics card, computer, or driver. If it cannot display its self-test or diagnostics, suspect the power supply or monitor hardware.
This guide covers the Alienware AW2720HF’s most common problems, including no power, “No HDMI Signal,” “No DP Signal,” missing 240Hz, flickering, ghosting, dead pixels, USB failures, locked controls, and AlienFX detection problems.
Start with the symptom
- No power or no LED
- Power LED on but no picture
- “No HDMI Signal” or “No DP Signal”
- Picture works but only at 60Hz, 120Hz, or 144Hz
- Black screen, flickering, or intermittent signal
- Blur, ghosting, or motion artifacts
- Lines, dead pixels, stuck pixels, or incorrect colors
- USB ports do not work
- Headphone or monitor audio does not work
- OSD buttons or the power button appear locked
- AlienFX or Alienware Command Center cannot detect the monitor
- The monitor fails its self-test or built-in diagnostics
Before troubleshooting
Do not open the monitor or attempt board-level repair. If you see smoke, sparks, melted plastic, smell burning, or hear unusual electrical noise, unplug the monitor and contact Dell or a qualified service provider. Do not keep cycling power after signs of electrical damage.
The AW2720HF is a 27-inch, 1920×1080, 240Hz monitor with one DisplayPort 1.2 input, two HDMI 2.0 inputs, a USB 3.0 hub, AMD FreeSync Premium, and NVIDIA G-SYNC Compatible certification. Dell documents 1920×1080 at 240Hz over both DisplayPort and HDMI, but the graphics card, cable, adapter, dock, and driver must also support the complete signal path. Five-minute AW2720HF checklist
- Check the power cable, outlet, and power LED.
- Select the correct input in the monitor’s Input Source menu.
- Reseat the video cable at both ends.
- Try another input and a known-good cable.
- Connect directly from the graphics card to the monitor, bypassing docks, KVMs, adapters, receivers, and extension cables.
- Run the monitor self-test with the video cable disconnected.
- Run the built-in color diagnostics.
- Test the monitor with another computer, or test the computer with another monitor.
- Temporarily use 1920×1080 at 60Hz, then increase the refresh rate gradually.
- Use Factory Reset if a display configuration may be corrupted.
How to run the AW2720HF self-test
The self-test is the most useful isolation test because it removes Windows, the graphics card, and the video cable from the equation.
- Turn off both the computer and monitor.
- Disconnect the video cable from the computer. Remove all digital video cables so the monitor receives no video signal.
- Turn on the monitor.
- A dialog box should appear against a black background. The power LED blinks blue in self-test mode.
- Turn the monitor off, reconnect the video cable, and turn on the computer and monitor.
If the self-test dialog appears, the monitor can power up and produce an image. Investigate the selected input, cable, graphics card, computer, or driver. If the screen stays blank even with no video cable attached, investigate power or monitor hardware. This test does not prove that every input, refresh rate, or feature works.
Use the built-in diagnostics to check the panel
The internal diagnostic tool displays solid colors, making it useful for finding permanent lines, bright or dark spots, color abnormalities, flickering, or uneven areas.

- Make sure the screen is clean.
- Press and hold Button 5 for four seconds until the menu appears.
- Use the rear joystick to highlight Diagnostics, then press the joystick.
- Inspect the gray screen and toggle the joystick through red, green, blue, black, and white screens.
- Look for lines, spots, blocks, flickering, or areas with abnormal color.
- The test ends on a text screen. Toggle the joystick again to exit.
A defect visible on the monitor’s own diagnostic colors points to the panel or internal monitor electronics. Clean diagnostic screens with a defective Windows image point instead to the cable, GPU, driver, settings, or source device. Dell says this test requires the video cable to be disconnected and the monitor to be in self-test mode.
AW2720HF has no power or no LED
- Firmly reconnect the power cable at the monitor and wall outlet.
- Test the outlet with another device.
- Press the monitor’s power button fully.
- Disconnect unnecessary peripherals and video cables, then try powering on the monitor by itself.
- If possible, try a known-good compatible power cable.
A solid blue LED indicates that the monitor is on and functioning normally. A blinking white LED indicates standby. If there is still no LED, OSD, self-test message, or diagnostic behavior, the problem is more likely power-related or internal than related to Windows.

“No HDMI Signal” or “No DP Signal”
- Open Input Source and select the port actually in use.
- Reseat the cable at both ends and inspect the connectors for damage or bent pins.
- Try DisplayPort instead of HDMI, or HDMI 1 instead of HDMI 2.
- Connect directly to the graphics card, not the motherboard video output, dock, KVM, adapter, or receiver.
- Try a known-good DisplayPort or HDMI cable.
- Test the monitor with another computer.
- Test the computer with another monitor.
- Power off both devices, disconnect them from AC briefly, reconnect them, and try again.
- If Windows is running but the screen is black, press
Win + Ctrl + Shift + Bto restart the Windows graphics driver.
If both HDMI inputs and DisplayPort fail with multiple known-good sources, the monitor becomes more suspect. If one input works, investigate the failed input, its cable, or that source. If the monitor works with another computer, the original computer or its signal path is probably the primary fault.
AW2720HF will not run at 240Hz
The monitor’s documented maximum preset mode is 1920×1080 at 240Hz over both DisplayPort and HDMI. That does not mean every laptop, console, USB-C adapter, dock, KVM, or HDMI adapter can deliver the mode.
Set 240Hz in Windows
- Open Settings.
- Go to System → Display.
- Select the AW2720HF if multiple displays are connected.
- Open Advanced display.
- Set the resolution to 1920×1080.
- Choose 240Hz as the refresh rate and apply it.
- Verify the active rate in Advanced display or the monitor’s Display Info OSD page.
If 240Hz is missing or unstable
- Update the graphics driver from the GPU or computer manufacturer.
- Remove docks, KVMs, converters, extension cables, and adapters.
- Test DisplayPort and HDMI independently.
- Try the supplied cable or a short, properly rated replacement.
- Confirm the GPU output supports 1080p at 240Hz.
- Temporarily disable HDR, variable refresh, and custom resolutions.
- Test 60Hz, then 120Hz or 144Hz, then 240Hz.
- Use Factory Reset if the display configuration may be corrupted.
If 60Hz works but 240Hz fails, the cable or an intermediate device is a strong suspect, although GPU output and driver limitations can produce the same symptom. Do not assume DisplayPort is always the answer: Dell specifies 240Hz for both inputs, while the entire signal chain determines what works in practice.
Black screen, flickering, or intermittent signal
- Test at 60Hz.
- Temporarily disable FreeSync or G-SYNC.
- Disable HDR and custom resolutions while isolating the fault.
- Use a direct GPU-to-monitor connection.
- Replace the video cable.
- Try another input.
- Test another computer.
- Run the monitor self-test and built-in diagnostics with the computer disconnected.
- Reset the monitor to factory settings.
A problem that changes when the cable moves, disappears with a shorter direct cable, or occurs only at 240Hz points toward the signal path. Failure during the monitor’s own self-test or color diagnostics points toward the monitor.
Some community reports describe intermittent blanking at high refresh rates or with variable refresh, but those reports are anecdotal and do not establish a universal AW2720HF defect.

Blurry image, ghosting, or motion artifacts
- Use the native 1920×1080 resolution.
- Remove video extension cables.
- Check that Windows is not using a non-native resolution or unusual scaling mode.
- Reset the monitor to factory defaults.
- Try a less aggressive response-time setting.
The AW2720HF guide notes that the Extreme response-time mode targets a 1ms gray-to-gray response but can produce visible artifacts. Inverse ghosting, halos, or bright trails may improve when you select a less aggressive mode. Compare a static desktop, scrolling text, and a game rather than judging from one scene alone.

- Power-cycle the monitor.
- Disconnect the video cable and run self-test.
- Run the built-in diagnostics through gray, red, green, blue, black, and white screens.
- Check whether the defect remains on every diagnostic color.
- Inspect the cable and test another source.
A line, spot, or missing color visible on the monitor’s own diagnostic screens is evidence of a panel or internal monitor problem. A defect visible only from one computer or input is more likely a cable, GPU, driver, or source issue.
Photograph the defect on the relevant diagnostic color and record the monitor’s service tag, purchase date, and input used. Do not assume that one dead pixel automatically qualifies for replacement. Check Dell’s current regional pixel policy and warranty terms.
Brightness, colors, or geometric distortion
- Use Factory Reset.
- Adjust brightness and contrast in the Display menu.
- Check whether the problem appears during self-test.
- Confirm Windows is using 1920×1080.
- Disable unusual GPU color overrides while testing.
- Check whether only one game or application is affected.
If geometric distortion or abnormal colors appear in the monitor’s self-test, the monitor is more suspect. If self-test is normal, continue with the computer, cable, driver, and application settings.
USB ports do not work
The AW2720HF’s USB hub requires the included USB 3.0 upstream cable. HDMI or DisplayPort carries video; it does not activate the monitor’s downstream USB ports. The monitor has one upstream port and four downstream ports, including a charging port.

- Turn on the monitor.
- Connect the USB upstream cable from the monitor to the computer.
- Try another USB port on the computer.
- Reconnect the downstream device.
- Power-cycle the monitor and reboot Windows.
- Test a low-power device such as a keyboard or mouse.
- Connect high-current devices directly to the computer.
- Confirm USB 3.0 support if SuperSpeed performance is expected.
If a wireless receiver behaves poorly near a USB 3.0 port, move it away or use an extension. If the hub works on another computer, investigate the original computer’s USB configuration rather than replacing the monitor.
Unlock the OSD or power button
The monitor’s rear controls can be locked separately or together. Press and hold Button 5 for four seconds. When the lock menu appears, select the Unlock icon.

Use the OSD’s Factory Reset option after a failed custom resolution, incorrect input behavior, persistent configuration problems, or a display-driver change that leaves the monitor unusable. Reset Others resets settings under the Others menu; Factory Reset resets all OSD settings.
A reset cannot repair a damaged cable, failed input, defective GPU, unsupported adapter, or damaged panel.

AlienFX or Alienware Command Center cannot detect the monitor
- Connect the monitor’s USB upstream cable to Windows.
- Install or update Alienware Command Center through Windows Update or Dell Support.
- Install the Alienware Gaming Monitor Control Center Driver.
- Reboot Windows.
- Confirm that the monitor is detected before troubleshooting lighting.
Dell’s older guide lists Windows 10 R3 or later, an active internet connection, the supplied USB cable, and the monitor control driver as prerequisites on a non-Alienware Windows system. Its version wording may not match current Windows 11 labels, so use the current package on Dell’s support page where available. Lighting detection and video output are separate problems: if AlienFX works but the image does not, troubleshoot the signal path independently.

When the AW2720HF is probably defective
Contact Dell or the seller when one or more of these conditions apply:
- The monitor has no LED, OSD, self-test message, or diagnostic behavior after outlet and cable checks.
- The built-in diagnostics show persistent lines, spots, blocks, or abnormal colors.
- The OSD itself flickers or disappears.
- Multiple known-good sources and cables fail on the same input.
- The monitor loses signal during its own self-test or diagnostics.
Stop changing drivers once the monitor’s own tests implicate the hardware. Record the service tag, symptoms, inputs tested, cables used, diagnostic colors affected, and photographs. Use Dell Support to check warranty and service options. The service tag is used for support, warranty status, and Dell resources.
Testing a used AW2720HF
Before accepting a used unit, test the power button and OSD, both HDMI inputs, DisplayPort, 1920×1080 at 60Hz and 240Hz, and the built-in diagnostic colors. Also test the USB hub with its upstream cable, buttons, lighting, and intermittent signal stability during an extended session. The internal diagnostics are especially valuable because they remove the seller’s computer and GPU from the panel test.

The OSD can display the monitor’s firmware version, but the available documentation does not establish that a current, user-installable AW2720HF firmware update exists. Do not flash firmware intended for another Alienware model. Check Dell’s current support page for an exact model-specific package before considering any update.
