If YouTube does not start the next playlist video, first check Autoplay on the device currently playing the video. YouTube stores this setting separately across computers, phones, TVs, and cast sessions. If Autoplay is already enabled, the next likely causes are page interaction, an unavailable playlist item, browser or app interference, a network problem, an account restriction, or a temporary YouTube issue.
Use the diagnostic steps below in order. They distinguish a queue-selection problem from a video that was selected but could not play.
Quick fix: test YouTube Autoplay in the right order
- Turn on Autoplay for the device you are using.
- Start a video from inside the playlist, not from a separate search result.
- Keep the player visible and do not scroll, open comments, search, or select another video.
- Test a different short, public playlist.
- Look for private, deleted, age-restricted, region-restricted, or unavailable entries.
- Refresh YouTube, then restart the browser or app and your device.
- Test the playlist in an Incognito or Private window.
- Disable extensions, especially ad blockers, script blockers, privacy tools, downloaders, and interface customizers.
- Update your browser or YouTube app.
- Clear browser site data or the YouTube app cache where available.
- Switch between Wi-Fi and mobile data.
- Test another device.
- Check whether a supervised account or age setting controls Autoplay.
- If the problem affects multiple devices and playlists, check for a current YouTube service issue.
The result of each test matters more than simply trying every fix. For example, if the playlist works in Incognito, the playlist is probably fine and the cause is likely an extension, cookie, cache, or browser setting.
First, identify what is actually failing
“Autoplay is not working” can describe several different problems:

- The next video is not selected: Autoplay may be off, the queue may have changed, or YouTube may have stopped advancing after page interaction.
- The next video is selected but does not play: The item may be unavailable, or playback may be failing because of the network, app, browser, or device.
- Some entries are skipped: Those specific videos may be private, deleted, restricted, or unavailable in your country.
- The switch is missing or keeps turning off: You may be using a different device or Google account, a supervised account may restrict it, or browser data may be reset.
- A “Continue watching?” prompt appears: This is a viewing safeguard, not necessarily a playlist problem.
- The playlist will not load or show all entries: The playlist page, app, connection, or YouTube service may be having trouble.
Watch for the next-video preview when the current video is near its end. That tells you whether YouTube has selected the next item before playback begins.
Check Autoplay on your current device
Desktop browser
- Open a video that belongs to the playlist.
- On the watch page, find the Autoplay switch at the bottom of the video player.
- Turn it on and confirm that a next-video preview appears.
YouTube’s official instructions place this control on the watch screen, so checking only the playlist page may not be enough. See YouTube’s Autoplay help page.
Android and iPhone or iPad
- Open the YouTube app.
- Tap your profile picture.
- Tap Settings, then Autoplay.
- Turn Autoplay on.
You can also change it from the player while watching a video. The app setting and the player control should be checked on the phone or tablet that is actually playing the playlist.
Smart TV and game console
- Open YouTube.
- Open Settings.
- Select Autoplay and enable it.
Menu names and remote-control layouts vary between TVs, consoles, and streaming devices. A setting enabled in the phone app does not guarantee that the TV app has the same state.
Casting
When casting from a phone or tablet, expand the control bar at the bottom of the screen and inspect the active queue and Autoplay control. The phone’s normal YouTube setting and the cast session’s queue are separate things to verify.

Keep the player visible during the test
YouTube says the next video may not start automatically if you scroll past the player or type a comment or search. This can make Autoplay appear broken when it is actually responding to the page state.
For a clean test, start the playlist and leave the video player in view until the video ends. Do not open comments, use search, select another recommendation, or create a new queue. If the next item starts in this test, the setting is working.

Check the playlist for unavailable videos
Test three things separately:
| Result | Likely explanation |
|---|---|
| No videos autoplay anywhere | Device setting, browser or app problem, account restriction, network issue, or YouTube service problem |
| Ordinary videos autoplay but playlists do not | Playlist contents, queue state, playlist loading, or a playlist-specific problem |
| Only one playlist fails | One or more unavailable, private, deleted, age-restricted, or region-restricted items |
| The same playlist fails on every device | Playlist access or contents, or a YouTube-side issue |
| The playlist works in Incognito | Extension, cookie, cache, or browser configuration problem |
| Videos work manually but not automatically | Autoplay state, page interaction, queue interruption, or an automatic playback error |
Look for “Video unavailable” placeholders and check whether the playlist contains:
- Private or deleted videos
- Age-restricted videos
- Videos unavailable in your country
- Items removed by the uploader or YouTube
- Videos that the signed-in account can no longer access
Do not assume that every skipped item is an Autoplay failure. If a video is private, you need permission from the owner; otherwise, remove or replace it in a playlist you control.
For playlists played inside an embedded player on another website, YouTube specifically notes that private, age-restricted, and embedding-disabled videos may not appear or play. Those restrictions should not automatically be applied to every normal playlist opened at youtube.com. If the issue occurs only in an embed, select Watch on YouTube and test the underlying playlist there. Embedded playback can also depend on a valid HTTP Referer and other embed requirements; see YouTube’s embedded-playlist guidance and embedded-player requirements.

Fix Autoplay in a desktop browser
Use Incognito or Private mode first
- Open an Incognito or Private window.
- Visit YouTube and open the same playlist.
- Start a video and wait without scrolling or interacting.
If it works there, the normal browser profile is the likely source of the problem. Disable all extensions, reload YouTube, and test again. Then re-enable extensions one at a time. Ad blockers can interfere, but so can privacy tools, script blockers, video downloaders, and extensions that modify YouTube’s layout or player.
Update the browser
Install the latest supported version of Chrome, Firefox, Safari, Edge, or your preferred compatible browser. An outdated browser can cause loading and playback problems beyond Autoplay itself. YouTube includes browser updates among its recommended playback troubleshooting steps.
Check JavaScript
YouTube depends on JavaScript. In Chrome, open Settings → Privacy and security → Site settings → JavaScript and ensure sites are allowed to use JavaScript. Reload YouTube and test again. The exact labels may differ in other browsers. See Chrome’s JavaScript and site-settings guidance.
Clear YouTube site data only after the controlled tests
In Chrome, open More → Delete browsing data, choose a time range, select cached images/files and cookies or site data, and select Delete data. Sign in again if necessary.
Clearing cookies can remove YouTube preferences and sign you out. YouTube explains the consequences and steps in its cache and cookies guide.

Fix Autoplay in the YouTube mobile app
Android
- Update YouTube from Google Play.
- Force-close and reopen the app.
- Restart the device.
- Test Wi-Fi and mobile data separately.
- Open Settings → Apps → YouTube → Storage and cache → Clear cache.
- Retest the playlist.
Android menu names vary by manufacturer and operating-system version. Clearing the cache should not be confused with clearing all app data, which can reset more settings and sign-in state. YouTube’s Android troubleshooting guide covers these recovery steps.
iPhone and iPad
- Update YouTube in the App Store.
- Force-close and reopen the app.
- Restart the device.
- Test Wi-Fi and cellular data separately.
- If the issue continues, delete and reinstall YouTube.
- Sign in again and retest.
iOS generally does not provide the same universal clear-cache control as Android, so reinstalling is the practical app reset when updating and restarting do not help.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Check the connection and playback errors
Autoplay cannot continue if the next video cannot load. YouTube recommends restarting the connection, trying another network, reducing video quality when the connection is insufficient, closing and reopening the app or browser, and restarting the device. Do not treat a particular internet speed as a universal Autoplay requirement: buffering also depends on resolution, congestion, device performance, and other users sharing the connection.
- Works on cellular but not Wi-Fi: Check the router, DNS, VPN, firewall, filtering, or network-level ad blocking.
- Works on Wi-Fi but not cellular: Check mobile-data permissions, data-saving settings, and carrier connectivity.
- Other video services also fail: The problem is probably broader than YouTube.
- Only YouTube fails: Browser or app state, account settings, or YouTube availability is more likely.
General playback steps are listed in YouTube’s video playback troubleshooting guide.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsCheck account restrictions and age settings
YouTube states that users aged 13–17 have Autoplay turned off by default but may turn it on. A supervised account may not be allowed to change Autoplay if a parent or guardian has disabled it.

If the control is unavailable or keeps reverting, verify that you are signed into the intended Google account and check whether the account is supervised. Also remember that Autoplay can legitimately differ between devices, so an apparent reset may simply reflect the computer, phone, TV, or cast session currently in use.
Understand “Continue watching?” and inactivity limits
A playlist may stop even while Autoplay remains enabled:
- On a mobile network, Autoplay may stop after 30 minutes of inactivity.
- On Wi-Fi, it may stop after four hours of inactivity.
- YouTube may show “Video paused. Continue watching?” after uninterrupted viewing—before 30 minutes on mobile, 60 minutes on the web, or 180 minutes on TV.
These are usage safeguards rather than proof that the playlist is broken. Select Yes or otherwise continue the session when prompted. See YouTube’s Autoplay documentation and its “Continue watching?” explanation.
Fix Autoplay on a TV, console, or cast session
Test direct playback in the TV or console YouTube app separately from casting. If the playlist works on the phone but stops on the TV, the playlist is not necessarily defective; the TV app, device setting, cast queue, or connection may be responsible.
- Check Autoplay in the TV or console app’s own Settings menu.
- Update the YouTube app and the device software if updates are available.
- For casting, inspect the queue and Autoplay control in the expanded mobile control bar.
- Power-cycle the TV or streaming device: unplug it, wait at least 30 seconds, reconnect it, and test again.
- Try direct playback without casting, then try casting again.
When YouTube itself may be having a problem
Consider a service-side issue when the same failure affects multiple playlists, devices, and networks, especially if playlists will not load or show errors such as “Error loading—Tap to retry.” A June 9, 2026 YouTube Community incident involving playlist loading was later marked fixed, but that historical event is not evidence of a current outage. Look for a current official YouTube notice before concluding that the service is down.
If local troubleshooting fails, send a report through Profile icon → Help and feedback → Send feedback. Include:
- Device model and operating-system version
- YouTube app or browser version
- Whether all playlists or only one fail
- The exact error message
- Whether Incognito or Private mode works
- Whether another network works
- Whether the issue occurs while signed out
- The playlist URL, if support requests it
Do not buy YouTube Premium specifically to repair Autoplay. Premium provides other benefits, but the cited YouTube troubleshooting material does not establish it as a fix for a malfunctioning playlist control.

If Autoplay works with a different public playlist in Incognito while the player remains visible, the original problem is probably the playlist or browser profile. If the next item appears but fails to play, investigate that video, the network, or playback errors. If nothing autoplays on any device or playlist, check account restrictions, app or browser state, network conditions, and current YouTube service availability.
