To automate a CSV download reliably, start listening for the download before triggering the export, wait for it to finish, save it to a known path, and only then close the browser context. Playwright provides a download event and a saveAs method for this workflow. Selenium’s standard API can click an export, but it does not expose download progress; for deterministic transfers, Selenium’s guidance is to use the browser to establish the session and discover the export URL, then fetch the file with an HTTP client using the required authentication state.
Choose the download path that fits the job
There are two different goals hidden in “automate a CSV download.” You may need to verify that a user can export a file through the application interface, or you may need to retrieve the resulting data reliably for downstream processing. Those goals often call for different techniques.
- Test the user-facing export: click the application’s export control in a browser and observe the resulting download. Playwright makes that flow straightforward with a first-class download event.
- Transfer the data reliably: use browser automation to authenticate and find the export endpoint, then use an HTTP client to transfer the CSV. This can be easier to monitor and retry than a browser-managed download, but you must preserve the request’s authentication and context.
- Run Selenium remotely: account for the fact that the browser and its download directory are on the remote machine. Use Grid’s managed-download capability when you need the file transferred back to the client.
Whichever route you choose, do not treat “the export button was clicked” as proof that a valid CSV is ready. Wait for the download or transfer to complete, save it somewhere controlled, and validate the content before passing it to another system.

The essential sequence is: create the download waiter, trigger the export, await the resulting Download object, and save it before closing the context. Registering the waiter first avoids a race in which a fast download begins before your code starts listening.

JavaScript: save to a deterministic path
const downloadPromise = page.waitForEvent('download');
await page.getByRole('button', { name: /export csv/i }).click();
const download = await downloadPromise;
await download.saveAs('/data/exports/report.csv');
The example assumes that the page and browser context have already been created and that the export is exposed as a button whose accessible name matches “Export CSV.” Adjust the locator and destination to your application and runner. Create the destination directory before the test if your environment does not create it automatically.
saveAs gives the test a stable application-chosen path rather than making later steps depend on a browser’s temporary download location. Keep the context open until the save has completed: Playwright deletes downloaded files when the producing browser context closes.
Python: use the download expectation around the action
async with page.expect_download() as download_info:
await page.get_by_role("button", name="Export CSV").click()
download = await download_info.value
await download.save_as("/data/exports/report.csv")
This is the asynchronous Python pattern. The expectation encloses the action that starts the download, so Playwright is already waiting when the click occurs. In a synchronous Playwright script, use the corresponding synchronous expect_download() context manager and call save_as on the returned download object.

Use the suggested name when the server owns the filename
A download object exposes the suggested filename and the download URL. Playwright documents that the suggested name is typically based on the response’s Content-Disposition header or the link’s HTML download attribute. If the application controls useful names such as orders-2026-09.csv, you can use that suggestion when choosing the destination. For repeatable tests and data pipelines, an explicit destination such as report.csv is often simpler.
Do not build logic around an assumed temporary filename or path. The temporary location is an implementation detail, and a file may not remain available after its browser context closes. Save the download to the location your next step expects.

Unknown or variable download triggers
If the trigger cannot be wrapped in a known action, a page-level download listener can observe download events. Make sure the main scenario waits for the work started by that listener. An unawaited listener can let the scenario finish while the file is still downloading or before it has been saved. For a test with a known export button, the explicit waiter-and-click sequence is easier to reason about.
Automate downloads with Selenium
Selenium can control a browser that clicks a download link, but its standard API does not expose download progress. The Selenium Project describes this as “less than ideal for testing downloaded files.” A click therefore does not by itself give your test a portable, reliable signal that a file is complete, nor does ordinary WebDriver provide the same download-object workflow as Playwright.
Use the browser for authentication, then transfer with HTTP
When reliable file transfer matters more than reproducing the browser’s final save behavior, Selenium’s documented approach is to use the browser to locate the download link, retain the required session cookies, and transfer the file with an HTTP client such as curl. This is particularly useful for large exports or when you need transfer progress and retry control.
- Use Selenium to sign in and navigate to the export screen as the application requires.
- Locate the export link or otherwise identify the URL that returns the CSV.
- Collect the cookies and any other authentication state required for that request.
- Make the request with an HTTP client, supplying the required state, and write the response to a controlled file path.
- Check the response and CSV contents before treating the transfer as successful.
The export URL may rely on more than a cookie: for example, an application may require a particular request context. Preserve whatever the endpoint actually needs rather than assuming that copying a URL alone is sufficient. The available Selenium guidance recommends carrying the required cookies to the HTTP client; it does not promise that every application’s export endpoint can be called with cookies alone.
This hybrid method changes what is being tested. It verifies that the authenticated session can retrieve the export resource, but it does not reproduce the browser’s final download handling in the same way as clicking and saving through the UI. If that final user experience is the requirement, keep a browser-driven test as well.

When a browser-managed download is still necessary
If the purpose is specifically to exercise the browser download behavior, configure a download directory in the browser setup and wait for the file by an application-appropriate completion signal. Selenium’s ordinary API does not supply a download-progress event, so avoid treating the click return as completion. Also distinguish an incomplete file from a completed one: a browser may write a temporary or partial file during transfer. The Selenium sources establish the progress limitation but do not prescribe a universal directory-polling algorithm; the right completion check depends on the browser and application environment.
Save CSVs from a remote Selenium session
In remote WebDriver, the browser usually writes the download on the remote computer, not on the machine running your test code. Looking for the file in a local client directory can therefore fail even when the export worked on the remote node.
Selenium Grid documents managed downloads: enable the feature in the Grid and in the client capability, then list the files available for download after triggering the export and request the selected file through the managed-download operation. This is the route to use when you want Grid to transfer the remote file back to the client. Without managed downloads, plan for the file to remain on the remote computer and arrange access to that location as part of your environment.
- Enable managed downloads in the Grid configuration.
- Set the corresponding managed-download capability in the WebDriver client.
- Trigger the export and wait for the file to become available.
- Ask the session for its downloadable-file listing, select the expected CSV, and use the file-download operation to transfer it.
- Save the returned file on the client and validate it before downstream use.
Do not use a local directory check as the only success condition for a remote session. First establish where the browser ran and whether managed transfer is enabled.
Decide whether to click the UI or call the export URL
| Consideration | Browser download | HTTP transfer after browser setup |
|---|---|---|
| What it exercises | The user-facing export path and browser download behavior. | Retrieval of the export resource with the required authenticated request state. |
| Completion signal | Playwright exposes a download event. Selenium’s standard API does not expose download progress. | The HTTP client can manage the transfer; check its result and the returned content. |
| Authentication | The browser session carries its own state. | Transfer required cookies and any other request context the endpoint needs. |
| Remote execution | Files may reside on the remote browser machine; Selenium Grid managed downloads can transfer them. | The HTTP client writes where that client runs, provided it has the necessary URL and authentication state. |
| Best fit | UI regression tests and confirming the export control starts a download. | Large or repeatable data transfers where progress and retries are important. |
These approaches can complement each other. A UI test can confirm that the export control is wired correctly, while a separate transfer step can handle routine extraction. Keep the distinction explicit in test reports: a successful HTTP retrieval does not establish that the browser’s save flow works, and a successful click does not establish that a usable CSV was saved.

Validate the file before using it
Browser download documentation describes how to detect and save a download; it does not guarantee that the downloaded response is a valid CSV for your application. Treat validation as an engineering control at the boundary between retrieval and processing.
- Check the response: where your transfer method exposes response metadata, inspect the status and content type. A URL that returns a login page or an error document is not a successful CSV export merely because a file was written.
- Check the content: confirm that the file has a plausible header row and the columns your consumer expects.
- Check encoding and parsing: use the parser and encoding assumptions of the downstream application, and fail visibly if decoding or parsing fails.
- Use a controlled destination: write to a known path and avoid letting later processing race the still-running download.
- Keep authentication out of logs: cookies and other session values are credentials; do not print them while troubleshooting transfer setup.
These checks are not a browser guarantee or a substitute for an application-specific schema contract. Define expected columns and other acceptance rules for the export you actually consume.

The Playwright test clicks but never receives a download
Create the event waiter before the click. Confirm the action really starts an attachment download: the application may instead open a new page, generate data in the page without initiating a download, or reject the export. Check the application response and locator rather than adding an arbitrary delay as the only fix.
The file disappears after the test step
Save it with saveAs before closing the browser context. Playwright deletes downloads when their originating context closes, so a temporary download path is not a durable handoff to later jobs.

Inspect the download’s suggested filename and application response behavior. The server’s Content-Disposition header or the link’s download attribute can influence the suggestion; browser behavior and headers can affect which name is used. Selenium reports success but the file is missing locally
Determine whether the browser was remote. In a remote session, the download normally lives on the remote machine. Enable Grid managed downloads and use its file listing and transfer operation, or use an HTTP client from an environment that can access the authenticated endpoint.
The HTTP request returns an error page or empty content
Check that the URL is the actual export endpoint and that the request includes the required session cookies and other authentication context. Inspect the response rather than saving every response body as though it were a CSV. Then validate the header row and expected columns before processing.
The link has a download attribute but opens or navigates instead
HTML’s download attribute is not universally applicable: MDN describes it as working for same-origin URLs and blob: or data: URLs. Browser settings and the response’s Content-Disposition can also affect download behavior and filename selection. For cross-origin exports, inspect how the server responds and choose the transfer method that matches the application’s actual behavior.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does an HTML link need a `download` attribute to save a CSV?
No. The attribute is one influence on browser behavior, not a universal requirement or guarantee; the response headers, origin, URL scheme, and browser settings matter too.
Can a screenshot API retrieve the CSV itself?
No. A screenshot API returns an image or PDF of a page, not the page’s CSV export file.
