The dependable way to automate price graphics is to separate design from data. Build a reusable brand template with dynamic fields for product name, current price, previous price, discount, currency, badge and product image. Then send validated catalog records to an image-automation API, save the returned JPG, PNG, WebP or other channel asset, and publish it at the dimensions each destination requires.
This approach supports price drops, restocks, localized currencies and channel-specific banners without manually editing every image. Bannerbear, Creatomate and Placid all document this template-plus-data architecture.
How the automation pipeline works
- Catalog is the source of truth. Keep SKU, product name, current price, former price, currency, promotion dates, locale and product-image URL in your commerce platform, catalog, spreadsheet or application.
- A designer creates the template once. Lock logos, fonts, backgrounds and legal text. Expose only fields that should change, using names such as
product_name,sale_price,regular_price,discount_percent,currency,badgeandproduct_image. - Your integration validates each record. Reject missing images, unsupported currencies, negative discounts, stale prices and promotions outside their effective dates before a render request is sent.
- The renderer produces an asset. Send the template identifier and dynamic values through an API, URL request, spreadsheet automation or no-code connector. Capture the returned asset URL or file.
- Publishing uses the right variant. Store the SKU, locale, template version, price snapshot and render timestamp with the asset, then send the correct dimensions to your storefront, email, social or advertising destination.
Render on catalog change for price drops and restocks, or on a schedule when a campaign starts. Use webhooks or polling for asynchronous jobs where the provider supports them.
Design a template that survives changing prices
Keep brand elements locked
Place the logo, background, typefaces, legal disclaimer and primary layout in fixed layers. Dynamic layers should contain only product-specific content. This prevents a feed update from changing visual identity or moving required disclosure text.
Plan for long names and large discounts
Set maximum line counts, truncation rules and minimum type sizes. Define what happens when a product name is unusually long, a currency symbol is wider than expected, or a discount has three digits. Auto-resizing text and responsive templates can help, but review the smallest supported output manually.

Use explicit price fields
Do not calculate a “was” price inside the design file. Pass regular_price, sale_price, currency and an already validated discount value. That makes the published claim auditable and keeps rounding consistent across channels.
Validate commerce data before rendering
- Identity: SKU and locale must identify one catalog record.
- Prices: Confirm both prices are numeric, non-negative and expressed in the declared currency.
- Sale logic: A sale price should not exceed the former price; calculate the displayed percentage with one documented rounding rule.
- Dates: Check promotion start and end times in the campaign’s intended timezone.
- Images: Verify that the URL is reachable, points to an allowed format and has sufficient resolution.
- Freshness: Reject records older than your acceptable catalog age so an expired price is not rendered.
- Localization: Format decimal separators, currency placement, language and tax wording for the target locale before insertion.
Keep the input snapshot with every output. If a customer or regulator questions a graphic, you can identify the exact SKU, values, locale and template revision that produced it.

| Bannerbear | Documents Shopify, WooCommerce, Airtable, Zapier and API routes. | Designer-created templates can modify text, images and colors. API reference lists JPG, PNG and PDF; its product page also lists WebP and AVIF. | Its e-commerce page documents batches of up to 100 renders. It advertises a 30-credit free trial; verify current limits before relying on them. |
| Creatomate | REST, spreadsheet and no-code workflows. | Mark dynamic elements in a reusable template and supply captions and product images. Cloud rendering returns MP4, JPG, PNG and GIF. | Its banner tutorial says automated workflows can generate hundreds of banners; actual limits depend on current account terms. |
| Placid | REST and URL APIs for structured data. | Dynamic text, photos and colors, auto-resizing layers, filters and effects; intended for consistent on-brand assets. | Designed for producing large volumes, but confirm current credits, queue behavior and format limits. |
Choose a native commerce connector when you want minimal integration code. Choose REST when your catalog, pricing rules or approval system already lives in your own application. For high-volume jobs, check whether rendering is synchronous, queued or webhook-driven, and whether batch requests have a documented maximum.

Implement the data-to-image workflow
Example record
{"sku":"shoe-042","product_name":"Trail Runner","regular_price":129.99,"sale_price":99.99,"currency":"USD","discount_percent":23,"badge":"Weekend sale","product_image":"https://store.example/images/shoe-042.jpg","locale":"en-US","starts_at":"2026-10-01T00:00:00Z","ends_at":"2026-10-07T23:59:59Z"}
Your application should map these fields to the provider’s named template modifications or dynamic properties. Keep provider credentials server-side, not in browser JavaScript.
Triggering renders
- Event-driven: A catalog webhook starts a render when price, inventory or image data changes.
- Scheduled: A campaign job renders all products whose promotion becomes active at a defined time.
- Bulk: Send a bounded batch, record each job identifier and retry only failed records.
Make requests idempotent. A key built from SKU, locale, price snapshot and template version prevents duplicate assets when a webhook is delivered twice. Cache unchanged combinations instead of paying to render them again.
Publishing and approvals
Do not publish immediately if your workflow requires merchandising or legal approval. Save the generated asset and metadata, show reviewers the exact price source and effective dates, then promote the approved file to your CDN or channel API. Retain the old asset until the new one is confirmed live.
Output formats and channel sizing
Use JPG for photographs and broad compatibility, PNG when transparency or crisp text matters, and WebP when your destination supports it and smaller files improve delivery. Some providers also support AVIF, PDF, GIF or MP4. Treat each channel size as a deliberate template variant rather than stretching one image.

- Storefront: Match the product-card or hero-slot dimensions and keep text readable on mobile.
- Email: Optimize file size and provide meaningful alt text separately; do not rely on image text alone.
- Social and ads: Maintain the platform’s current aspect-ratio and safe-area requirements in separate variants.
- Print or sales PDFs: Use the provider’s PDF settings, including paper size, margins and orientation, when available.
Reliability, performance and cost controls
- Queue intentionally: For a large catalog, throttle concurrency to the provider’s documented limits and process retries with exponential backoff.
- Separate transient from permanent failures: Retry timeouts and rate limits; fix invalid template fields, missing images and unsupported formats before retrying.
- Use webhooks safely: Verify signatures where offered, make webhook handling idempotent and poll as a fallback if a callback is delayed.
- Measure the pipeline: Track records received, validated, rendered, rejected, retried and published. These are operational counts, not conversion claims.
- Control spend: Render only changed data, reuse cached assets and select the smallest output set that each channel needs. Review monthly credits and batch limits before a seasonal launch.
No independent conversion-lift or performance percentage is established here; treat vendor throughput and credit figures as product terms that can change.
Troubleshooting common failures
The graphic shows an old price
Inspect the catalog timestamp and cache key. Invalidate an old cached combination, confirm the webhook carried the latest currency and price, and compare the stored input snapshot with the storefront’s current value.
Images are cropped or missing
Check that the source URL is publicly reachable by the renderer, returns an image content type and is not protected by a short-lived token. Use a template crop mode that matches the source aspect ratio, or provide a prepared variant.
Text overflows
Shorten or wrap the product name, increase the text box, reduce the font within an approved minimum, or route the record to manual review. Do not silently shrink legal copy until it is unreadable.

Discount percentages disagree
Define whether the percentage is calculated from the former price before or after tax and how it is rounded. Compute it once in the validated data layer and pass the resulting display value to every template.
Jobs time out or exceed limits
Reduce concurrency, split bulk work into documented batch sizes and use asynchronous jobs where available. Store job IDs so a retry does not create duplicate published assets.

FAQ
Can I generate graphics directly from Shopify?
Yes. Bannerbear documents Shopify and WooCommerce connections; Creatomate and Placid document API, spreadsheet or no-code routes. The catalog still needs validation before rendering.
Should prices be calculated in the template?
No. Calculate and validate prices in your commerce data layer, then pass explicit display fields to the template so rounding and currency rules remain consistent.

Frequently Asked Questions
How do I prevent an expired sale graphic from being published?
Validate promotion end time against the campaign timezone before rendering, and retain the effective-date snapshot with the asset for approval and audit.
Quick Recap
What should happen when a product has no image?
Reject the record or route it to a fallback template; do not render a broken image placeholder into a customer-facing banner.
