AutoCAD, FreeCAD, and OpenSCAD are not interchangeable versions of the same product. Choose AutoCAD for professional 2D drafting, DWG-based delivery, documentation, and Autodesk toolsets; choose FreeCAD for free, open-source, graphical parametric 3D CAD; and choose OpenSCAD for code-defined, repeatable solid models and parameterized 3D-printing parts.
The right decision depends more on your files and workflow than on a feature checklist. A free program that cannot preserve a client’s DWG drawings may cost more in conversion and retraining than a subscription, while a hobbyist may gain nothing from paying for a full drafting platform.

What each application is designed to do
AutoCAD: drafting and documentation first
AutoCAD is a proprietary commercial CAD platform built around precise geometry, layers, blocks, external references, dimensions, layouts, viewports, plotting and the DWG ecosystem. It also creates 3D solids, surfaces and meshes, but its central advantage is production documentation and compatibility with organizations already using Autodesk. Autodesk lists architecture, mechanical, electrical, MEP, plant, mapping and raster-focused toolsets alongside desktop, web and mobile access. See the official AutoCAD overview.
That makes AutoCAD the safest choice when an employer, contractor, consultant or client specifies native DWG, established templates, plot styles, standards or Autodesk workflows. It is normally licensed by subscription; pricing varies by country, term, tax and promotion. Eligible students and educators can receive renewable educational access, but that is not ordinary commercial licensing.

FreeCAD: open-source parametric 3D CAD
FreeCAD is a free, open-source, cross-platform parametric 3D modeler. Its graphical workflow uses sketches, geometric and dimensional constraints, features, Boolean operations and a visible model tree. Part Design, Part, TechDraw, FEM, CAM-related and other workbenches extend the core application, while Python, macros and the Addon Manager provide automation and customization.
FreeCAD is especially relevant to mechanical parts, engineering designs, product development, architecture/BIM-related work and 3D printing. The trade-off is inconsistency: different workbenches and community add-ons can have different interfaces, maturity and compatibility. The project’s licensing documentation and Addon Manager page should be checked for the core version and any extensions you distribute.
OpenSCAD: CAD through source code
OpenSCAD is a free, open-source script-based solid modeler. Instead of dragging faces and editing a feature tree, you describe geometry with primitives and constructive solid geometry: union(), difference(), intersection(), transforms and extrusions. A design can be stored as text, reviewed in a diff, regenerated in batch and changed globally by editing variables.

It is not a conventional drafting application, an interactive sketcher or a substitute for a drawing-management system. Compare them by real task
2D drafting and drawing sheets
AutoCAD is the clear leader for 2D production: layers, blocks, xrefs, annotation scales, hatches, dimensions, layouts, title blocks, viewports, plotting and standards are mature and widely understood. It is the natural choice for construction, architecture, civil, MEP, electrical and documentation-heavy teams.
FreeCAD’s TechDraw workbench generates drawing views from 3D models, with dimensions, annotations and PDF export. That is useful when the drawing is derived from a mechanical model, but it is less direct for a large 2D-only document set. FreeCAD supports formats such as DXF, SVG, STEP, IGES, STL and IFC, yet its format documentation makes clear that support is format-specific.
OpenSCAD can produce 2D projections, but it is generally unsuitable for floor plans, construction sets, title blocks, plotting standards or interactive annotation. It should not be selected for an AutoCAD-style drafting office.
3D mechanical modeling
FreeCAD is the most conventional 3D CAD choice here. You can constrain a sketch, pad or pocket it, add fillets and chamfers, create patterns, and revise earlier features through the model tree. STEP and other neutral formats make it practical for exchange, although imported meshes are not automatically editable feature histories.

OpenSCAD is faster when the shape is naturally expressed as primitives and Booleans. It excels at dimensions that are explicit in code and at generating many variants. It becomes less attractive for organic forms, imported geometry, complex assemblies and designs that another person expects to edit graphically.
AutoCAD’s solids, surfaces and meshes are useful when 3D coordination is part of a DWG documentation workflow. AutoCAD can model in 3D, but that does not make it the best general mechanical feature-history system.
Parametric design means different things
- FreeCAD: parameters and constraints drive a feature history; changing an earlier sketch can update downstream features.
- OpenSCAD: variables and functions drive source code; changing a value regenerates the model.
- AutoCAD: automation, blocks, constraints and APIs are powerful, but its design-history assumptions differ by workflow and are not identical to a mechanical parametric modeler.
3D printing
OpenSCAD is a strong fit for dimension-controlled printer parts, repeated patterns and design families. Keep variables at the top of the file, use modules, document units, avoid magic numbers and render/export test parts in the target slicer. Watch for non-manifold geometry, coincident surfaces, Boolean artifacts, insufficient curve resolution, incorrect scale and differences between preview and final render.
FreeCAD is preferable when a part needs sketches, holes, pockets, fillets, chamfers, patterns or a visible revision history. Common problems include broken references after changing topology, confusion between Part and Part Design, and imported meshes that are not clean solids.

AutoCAD makes sense when the printable part is only one element of a professional drawing or fabrication package, or when the organization already standardizes on DWG. It is usually excessive for a hobbyist who only needs an STL or 3MF.

AutoCAD has the largest command vocabulary and requires understanding coordinates, object snaps, layers, annotation, layouts and plotting. Its advantage is an enormous training ecosystem and familiar conventions in many workplaces.
FreeCAD’s challenge is choosing among workbenches and managing feature-history dependencies, including topological naming issues. Its advantage is a familiar graphical CAD mental model: sketches, constraints and features are visible and inspectable.
OpenSCAD has a smaller core language but requires programming habits. Long scripts need modules, naming conventions, comments, library separation and version control. It is easy to branch and review text, but a colleague who expects GUI editing may find the model difficult to maintain.

Files, DWG and interoperability
AutoCAD’s native environment is DWG. Autodesk documents version-specific DWG compatibility in its drawing-file guidance. FreeCAD can work with many exchange formats, but “opens DWG” or “exports DXF” does not promise preservation of dynamic blocks, associative dimensions, layouts, proxy objects, xrefs, plot styles, fonts, vertical-product data or annotation behavior. OpenSCAD is not a DWG editor.
Use STEP for neutral solid exchange where supported, STL or 3MF for printing, and DXF only for selected 2D geometry. Mesh exports do not retain sketches, constraints, feature history, named dimensions or assembly relationships. Always retain the source: .dwg/.dxf, .FCStd or .scad, alongside exports.
Licensing, support and operating systems
AutoCAD is paid commercial software with vendor support, Autodesk web/mobile access and specialized toolsets. AutoCAD 2026 requirements are version-specific; Autodesk lists 64-bit Windows 10/11, 8 GB basic RAM and 32 GB recommended RAM, with separate macOS support and higher needs for large 3D datasets. FreeCAD’s official downloads page listed version 1.1.1 as stable in the supplied research, with 64-bit Windows 10, macOS 12 Monterey and Linux packages. Verify the page before installing because release support changes. The core is open source and free to use under its stated licenses; add-ons and macros may have separate terms. Support is primarily community and ecosystem based.
OpenSCAD is also positioned as free/open source, but current release, license wording and supported platforms should be taken from its official site and repository rather than assumed from an old article. “Free” can mean no subscription, open source, educational access or personal-use permission—these are not interchangeable.
Recommendations by user
- AutoCAD office, contractor or consultant: AutoCAD, especially when clients require native DWG, templates and plotted documentation.
- Linux user seeking broad 3D CAD: FreeCAD.
- Programmer or maker building parameterized parts: OpenSCAD.
- Student learning conventional mechanical CAD: FreeCAD; learn AutoCAD instead if your course or employer is DWG-centered.
- 3D-printing hobbyist: OpenSCAD for code-friendly dimensional parts, FreeCAD for interactive mechanical modeling.
- Small business delivering DWG files: AutoCAD or a carefully tested commercial DWG alternative; do not assume FreeCAD round-tripping is lossless.
- Team with mixed authors: Prefer the tool your collaborators can maintain. A technically powerful OpenSCAD script may be a poor hand-off if nobody else writes code.
Run a migration pilot before switching
- Open a representative production DWG, not a trivial sample.
- Test layers, blocks, dimensions, layouts, xrefs, fonts, plot styles and specialized objects.
- Model a constrained mechanical part and revise an early feature.
- Test an assembly or multi-body design if your work requires one.
- Generate a drawing sheet with annotations and export it.
- Export a printable part, reopen it in the slicer or manufacturing software, and verify units, scale, holes and curved surfaces.
- Have another user revise the model without the original author’s help.
- Check software, add-on, education and commercial-use licenses.
If you need advanced organic surfacing, cloud-native simultaneous collaboration, enterprise PDM/PLM, validated regulated workflows or a specific CAM/BIM ecosystem, evaluate a purpose-built alternative such as Autodesk Fusion, Onshape, BricsCAD, LibreCAD or SolveSpace against the actual requirements.
