Choose Audacity for recording and editing audio; choose LMMS for MIDI composition, synthesizers, beat-making, and electronic arrangement. They are free, open-source desktop applications, but they are not interchangeable “audio editors.” Audacity works primarily with recorded waveforms, while LMMS is a music-production workstation built around notes, patterns, instruments, samples, and automation. If your project combines vocals or live instruments with electronic composition, using both is often the most practical free workflow.
Audacity and LMMS solve different problems
Audacity is an audio editor and recorder. You can capture a microphone or mixer input, see the resulting waveform, cut and move selections, reduce noise, apply effects, inspect a spectrogram, and export a finished file. Its official feature overview covers recording, mixing, noise reduction, equalization, filters, tempo and pitch changes, plug-ins, and common formats including MP3, M4A, AIFF, FLAC, and WAV: Audacity FAQ.
LMMS is a digital audio workstation for MIDI sequencing and electronic music production. Its Song Editor arranges instrument, sample, pattern, and automation tracks; the Piano Roll edits notes; and the Beat+Bassline Editor builds repeating rhythmic patterns: LMMS interface documentation. The LMMS manual explicitly says the application cannot record sound or edit recorded sounds, so loading an audio sample is not the same as waveform editing: Song Editor.
Quick comparison
| Task or capability | Audacity | LMMS |
|---|---|---|
| Primary purpose | Waveform recording, editing, cleanup, analysis, and conversion | MIDI sequencing, synthesis, beat programming, sampling, and arrangement |
| Microphone or mixer recording | Core workflow | Not supported; use another recorder |
| Cut, copy, and repair waveform sections | Core workflow | Not a comparable feature |
| Noise reduction and spoken-word editing | Strong fit | Poor fit |
| MIDI notes and Piano Roll | Not its main workflow | Core strength |
| Beat and bassline patterns | Not its main workflow | Core strength |
| Software instruments and synthesizers | Effects plug-ins, but not a composition-centered instrument rack | Built-in instruments, synthesizers, SoundFonts, and plug-in instruments |
| Automation and song arrangement | Limited compared with a music-production workstation | Song Editor and Automation Editor are central |
| Audio samples | Open and edit as waveforms | Play through AudioFileProcessor and sample tracks; no destructive waveform editing |
| Best hardware input | Microphone, mixer, or line input | MIDI keyboard or controller |
| Project files | AUP3 in current 3.x releases | .mmp or compressed .mmpz |
| Core cost and license | Free and open source under the GNU GPL | Free and open source |
Project files are not interchangeable. Rendering an LMMS song to WAV preserves sound, not editable MIDI instruments or automation; exporting an Audacity project does not create an LMMS arrangement.

What Audacity is best at
Recording and spoken-word production
For a podcast, interview, lecture, voice-over, field recording, or live guitar take, connect the microphone or mixer, select the input, create a recording track, press Record, and edit the captured waveform. You can trim unwanted sections, remove silence, fade, adjust levels, and export without building a musical arrangement.
Cleanup, effects, and analysis
Audacity provides documented workflows for noise reduction, equalization, filters, reverb, echo, distortion, compression, limiting, tempo changes, and pitch changes. Spectrogram views and analysis tools help inspect frequency content, making it useful for education, restoration, and troubleshooting as well as publishing.
Import, conversion, and plug-ins
Common WAV, MP3, FLAC, AIFF, and M4A workflows are supported. Some formats, including AAC, AC3, WMA, and audio from many video files, may require the optional FFmpeg library. Third-party effect plug-ins are available, but compatibility depends on the operating system and Audacity version; consult Audacity support and the Audacity plug-in directory.
Desktop availability
Audacity is desktop software rather than a mobile editor. The official download page showed stable Audacity 3.7.8 and a separate Audacity 4 Beta 2 listing when checked in August 2026; the beta should not be confused with the stable release: official downloads. The Windows page lists Windows 10 and 11 testing, a Windows ARM64 beta, and a requirement for fast, uninterrupted local storage: Windows requirements. ARM beta builds and plug-in or FFmpeg compatibility have additional limitations.

What LMMS is best at
Notes, patterns, and arrangement
Enter melodies and chords in the Piano Roll, create drum and bass patterns in the Beat+Bassline Editor, then arrange sections in the Song Editor. Automation tracks can control instrument or effect parameters over time, while the FX Mixer handles routing and processing.
Instruments, samples, and MIDI
LMMS includes software instruments and synthesizers, supports SoundFonts, and can play imported WAV, FLAC, or OGG material through the AudioFileProcessor. MIDI settings support WinMM on Windows, Apple MIDI on macOS, and JACK-MIDI on Linux and macOS; controllers can be assigned to instruments and parameters: MIDI documentation and settings documentation.
What LMMS cannot do
LMMS is not the right application for recording vocals, guitar, or other live audio, nor for destructive editing of a recorded waveform. Record those parts in Audacity or another DAW, then import the file. The LMMS FAQ describes this sample-import route through AudioFileProcessor: LMMS FAQ.
Which one fits your project?
| If you want to… | Use | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| Record a microphone, interview, lecture, or voice-over | Audacity | Direct recording and waveform editing |
| Remove background noise, trim silence, or repair a take | Audacity | Selection-based editing and cleanup tools |
| Edit a finished WAV or MP3 | Audacity | Designed for file-level audio work |
| Compose beats, melodies, and bass lines from scratch | LMMS | Piano Roll, patterns, instruments, and arrangement |
| Use a MIDI keyboard as your main input | LMMS | MIDI routing and controller assignments |
| Arrange loops and automate synthesizers | LMMS | Song Editor and Automation Editor |
| Record live instruments while sequencing MIDI in one session | A fuller DAW | Neither application provides the complete workflow |
Ease of use follows the task. Audacity is usually quicker when the job is linear: open or record a waveform, edit it, and export. LMMS makes more sense to someone who thinks in beats, notes, instruments, and patterns, but its multi-window production model can feel excessive for a simple recording.

Using Audacity and LMMS together
Record first, compose second
- Record the vocal or instrument in Audacity.
- Trim unwanted material and remove obvious noise.
- Export a lossless WAV.
- In LMMS, add a sample track or load the file with AudioFileProcessor.
- Align the recording with the project tempo and arrange MIDI instruments around it.
- Export the LMMS composition to WAV.
- Optionally reopen that WAV in Audacity for final trimming, fades, analysis, metadata preparation, or format conversion.
Compose first, finish second
- Build and mix the instrumental in LMMS.
- Export WAV rather than MP3 when further editing is planned.
- Open the WAV in Audacity.
- Make final cuts, fades, level adjustments, or inspections.
- Export MP3 or another delivery format only for the final copy.
WAV is the safer interchange format because repeated lossy MP3 encoding can reduce quality. LMMS documentation recommends WAV as a broadly readable export choice: LMMS export guidance.
Plug-ins, formats, and compatibility details
LMMS plug-ins
LMMS supports LADSPA and VST instruments and effects. VST instruments are loaded through VeSTige, while effects use the configured VST directory: VST documentation. The current manual states that VST3 is not supported. A plug-in can also fail because of a wrong directory, 32-bit/64-bit mismatch, missing dependencies, or host-specific incompatibility. Windows-built VSTs on Linux may require Wine or Wine-Staging.
Export and project formats
LMMS projects use .mmp or .mmpz, and the application can import MIDI and Hydrogen files. Its documented audio exports include WAV, OGG, and MP3; some 1.3-era documentation also mentions FLAC, so confirm the formats exposed by your installed build: menu documentation. Audio exports are rendered sound, MIDI exports are note and performance data, and stems are separate rendered track files where available.
Recommended Free Tools
Audacity uses AUP3 project files in current 3.x releases. Linux distribution packages can lag behind the official AppImage, and repository, app-store, MuseHub, and direct-download versions may update at different times: Linux installation guidance and download guidance.

Versions, operating systems, and stated requirements
Audacity
The official download page’s August 2026 listing showed Audacity 3.7.8 as stable and Audacity 4 Beta 2 as pre-release. Check the page again before installing because release labels change: Audacity downloads. Windows support covers Intel 32- and 64-bit builds and a separate ARM64 beta; macOS offers a universal binary; Linux offers a 64-bit AppImage.
LMMS
The official download page listed LMMS 1.2.2 as the stable Linux version, while the current manual documents the 1.3.x development line. Alpha, beta, and nightly builds are pre-release and should not be presented as stable: LMMS downloads and installation documentation.
LMMS’s stated minimum is a 1.5 GHz two-core x86, x86_64, or ARM processor, 1 GB RAM, and 100 MB storage. Its stated recommendation is a 2 GHz four-core processor, 4 GB RAM, and 512 MB storage. These are developer requirements, not independent performance benchmarks.

Performance considerations
For Audacity, reliable local storage matters during recording; external USB, network, or thumb-drive storage can be less dependable. In LMMS, CPU demand rises with instruments, effects, plug-ins, and tracks. Buffer size trades latency against stability: lower settings help MIDI performance but can produce pops, clicks, or dropouts on a heavily loaded project. Increase the buffer, reduce plug-in load, and test again if playback is unstable.

When a different DAW is the better answer
Choose a fuller digital audio workstation when you need simultaneous multitrack recording and MIDI composition, vocal comping and take management, advanced routing, comprehensive mixing or mastering, VST3 support, industry-standard project interchange, or one application for live instruments, vocals, MIDI, and collaboration. Audacity and LMMS are excellent specialists, but neither is a universal replacement for that category.
Common mistakes and fixes
“Why can’t LMMS record my microphone?”
Recording sound is outside LMMS’s documented scope. Capture the part in Audacity or another DAW, export WAV, and import it into LMMS.
“Why can’t Audacity make my MIDI beat?”
Audacity can edit the rendered audio, but it is not a Piano Roll-and-pattern composition environment. Use LMMS or a full DAW for note-based production.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
“Why did my LMMS plug-in fail?”
Check whether it is VST2 rather than VST3, verify the configured directory, match 32-bit and 64-bit architectures, install dependencies, and account for Wine when using Windows plug-ins on Linux.
“Why is an Audacity format unavailable?”
Install or enable FFmpeg for formats that need it, and compare your package with the current official download if a Linux repository build appears outdated.
