Atom 1.18, released in 2017, improved launching the Windows version of Atom from a Windows Subsystem for Linux (WSL) shell. It made an early cross-environment workflow less awkward: use Linux command-line tools in WSL, then open the project in a Windows desktop editor. Atom did not become a Linux application running inside WSL. Today, this is historical context: GitHub archived Atom’s repository on March 3, 2023, and the editor is discontinued.
What Atom 1.18 changed
A contemporary report described Atom 1.18 as improving its launch behavior from WSL. The change was an Atom-side interoperability improvement, not a new WSL feature or a redesign of the editor. The report does not establish the precise launcher code or path-conversion method, so it is best understood at the workflow level: invoking the Windows editor from a Linux shell became more practical.
WSL let developers run Linux command-line tools on Windows while also supporting calls from WSL to Windows programs. Microsoft’s WSL release notes document examples of launching Windows executables from a WSL shell. Atom 1.18 addressed friction in applying that kind of interoperability to a graphical editor.

How the workflow worked
The conceptual sequence was:
WSL Bash → Atom launcher → Windows Atom executable → Windows desktop GUI
A representative command-line workflow might look like this:
cd /path/to/project
atom .
Or, to open a file:
atom path/to/file
These illustrate Atom’s command-line launcher, not a verified, release-specific WSL command contract. The Atom repository documentation describes the atom command, while the contemporary WSL report establishes the launch improvement. In this arrangement, WSL provided the shell and project context; Atom remained a Windows-installed program with a Windows GUI.

Why paths made the handoff tricky
A Linux path such as /home/user/project and a Windows path such as C:Usersnameproject are different representations. Passing a project location across the boundary requires the launcher and receiving application to agree on a path they can access. The 1.18 report does not specify exactly how Atom handled that translation, so the improvement should not be taken to mean that every path or filesystem edge case was solved.
The location of a project could matter. Files in a WSL distribution’s Linux filesystem, files on a mounted Windows drive such as /mnt/c, and paths with spaces or non-ASCII characters can present different interoperability conditions. Permissions, case sensitivity, and the way each environment sees a file may also differ. Microsoft’s WSL notes track changes to path translation and Windows/Linux filesystem interoperability over time; behavior from today’s WSL should not be projected backward onto the 2017 release.

What “launching from WSL” did not mean
- Not a Linux Atom binary: The described workflow launched the Windows build of Atom.
- Not a Linux GUI running inside WSL: Atom’s window was a Windows desktop application, not a GUI rendered as a Linux application inside WSL.
- Not modern remote development: Atom 1.18’s launch improvement was different from later editor integrations that connect to a development environment inside WSL.
- Not a cure-all for file access: Cross-environment path, permission, and filesystem behavior could still cause problems.
In 2017, WSL was primarily a Linux command-line environment with Windows interoperability. WSL 2 and later Linux GUI application capabilities came afterward. Microsoft’s historical release notes show those later changes separately. They are not part of what Atom 1.18 introduced.
Historical troubleshooting context
For someone documenting or recreating this legacy workflow, failures can be diagnosed by separating the handoff stages rather than assuming Atom itself was running under Linux:

atomis not found: The shell cannot locate the launcher. Check whether the historical Windows installation and its command-line launcher are present and whether the relevant path is exposed to WSL. An outdated or missing PATH entry could make a working Windows installation unreachable from the shell.- Atom starts but cannot open the target: The path may be expressed in a form the Windows application cannot use, or the target may not be accessible from that side of the boundary. Try to distinguish a launch failure from a file-path failure.
- A path with spaces fails: Shell quoting and argument handling can affect how a path is passed. This is a general command-line concern, not proof of a particular Atom 1.18 defect.
- Access or file behavior differs: Permissions and filesystem semantics can differ between the WSL filesystem and a Windows-mounted location. A launch improvement does not guarantee identical behavior in both places.
- Results differ on a modern machine: WSL and Windows have changed substantially since 2017. Current behavior does not establish how every historical Windows build, WSL distribution, or Atom package behaved.
These are diagnostic categories, not a claim that Atom 1.18 had a documented fix for each one. Exact behavior could depend on the Windows and WSL versions, Atom build, installation type, and project location.

Atom is discontinued legacy software, not a current editor recommendation. GitHub archived the Atom repository on March 3, 2023. GitHub also issued a certificate-revocation notice in February 2023 concerning Atom 1.63.0 and 1.63.1 and directed affected users to an earlier version. Old installers, packages, and community extensions may be unavailable or unmaintained; avoid treating unofficial copies as trustworthy downloads.

Historical Atom documentation described Windows installer and ZIP options, but those details are not current installation guidance. If your interest is preservation or research, verify a binary’s provenance and consider the security implications before running discontinued software.
Quick Recap
What to use for a similar workflow today
- Visual Studio Code: For a Windows editor integrated with a development environment in WSL, see Microsoft’s VS Code WSL documentation. This is a modern remote-development model, not the same mechanism as Atom 1.18’s launch improvement.
- Neovim or Vim: For an editor that runs in the WSL terminal itself, visit Neovim or Vim. These are terminal-oriented rather than Atom-style graphical editors.
- Sublime Text: A Windows graphical editor option for people who prefer a standalone application; consult its official site for current details. Its workflow should not be assumed to match VS Code’s WSL integration.
- JetBrains IDEs: For full IDE tooling, debugging, and project navigation, see JetBrains. These products are generally a broader, heavier category of tool than Atom.
