Verdict: The ATI All-in-Wonder 9800 Pro is a high-end 2003 AGP Radeon 9800 Pro combined with an analog TV tuner, composite/S-Video capture, TV output, and remote-control software. It remains an excellent choice for an authentic Windows XP multimedia or retro-gaming PC, but it is a poor modern capture solution because its hardware, drivers, and inputs are obsolete.
What the name means
“ATI” refers to ATI Technologies, before AMD acquired the company. “Radeon 9800 Pro” identifies the underlying high-end DirectX 9 graphics platform, while “All-in-Wonder” identifies ATI’s multimedia range. This was not merely a standard Radeon with a television application: the board added an analog tuner, capture circuitry, TV output, proprietary cabling, and media-center software.

ATI announced the card in April 2003 for gaming, home-theater PCs, television viewing, recording, and analog-video work. Period announcements listed Windows XP, Windows 2000, Windows Me, and Windows 98/98 SE support (The Register; Videomaker).

What the multimedia hardware does
Analog television tuner
The tuner received analog broadcast or cable television. Period coverage described a 125-channel tuner, stereo support on the Pro model, and GuidePlus/GemStar listings (The Register). It cannot receive ATSC or DVB digital broadcasts, digital cable, IPTV, or streaming services.
Analog capture
With the correct breakout harness, the card captures composite and S-Video sources such as VHS players, camcorders, older consoles, and analog set-top boxes. Results depend on the analog signal, WDM driver, video standard, codec, and application. A fast Radeon GPU does not by itself guarantee better VHS capture.
TV output and displays
It can drive a VGA or DVI monitor while sending video to a television or VCR. However, the tuner and video connectors occupy rear-bracket space. Unlike a standard 128 MB Radeon 9800 Pro, the All-in-Wonder does not offer the same flexible dual-PC-monitor output arrangement, as HotHardware’s review noted.
Remote and software
Many packages included an ATI Remote Wonder RF receiver that connects by USB and a handheld remote. Multimedia Center supplied TV, recording, and playback functions; EAZYLOOK provided a large on-screen interface for living-room use. GuidePlus/GemStar supplied listings where supported. Installing only the display driver does not enable all of these features.
Gaming performance in its era
The graphics portion used the same broad eight-pipeline Radeon 9800 Pro design as the 128 MB card and was high-end hardware in 2003. Actual frame rates depended on the CPU, AGP chipset, driver, game patch, resolution, anti-aliasing, and memory configuration, so period results should not be treated as a universal ranking. Today it is suitable for period games, not modern gaming or current Windows systems.
Windows XP setup: drivers matter
For the most authentic and reliable configuration, use a compatible AGP motherboard, Windows XP 32-bit, the correct breakout cable, auxiliary power, and a period audio connection. AMD’s legacy page still lists archival packages, including Catalyst 10.2 for XP, a separate WDM Integrated Driver 10.2, Multimedia Center 9.08, and older Catalyst/WDM packages for Windows 2000 and Windows Me/98 (AMD legacy support).
- Identify the exact board and operating system; do not assume an ordinary Radeon 9800 package is sufficient.
- Install the matching display driver.
- Install the WDM capture driver. AMD identifies this package as required for All-in-Wonder and VIVO capture functions.
- Install Multimedia Center or a WDM-compatible third-party application.
- Install Remote Wonder software if the receiver is present.
- Attach the correct harness, reboot, and check both display and capture devices in Device Manager.
- Test composite first, then S-Video or tuner input, using the correct NTSC, PAL, or SECAM setting.
- Test audio separately through the sound card’s line-in and recording mixer.
Troubleshooting
Display works but capture does not
Check that WDM is installed, the regional standard is correct, the breakout cable matches the board, and the application supports legacy WDM devices. Remove conflicting driver packages and test on Windows XP. A damaged tuner or capture section is also possible.

Video works but audio is missing
Verify the RCA audio connection to the sound card, select the correct line-in recording source, and adjust Windows mixer levels. Video capture and audio capture use separate signal paths.
No picture during startup
Drivers are not involved before boot video appears. Check auxiliary power, AGP compatibility, contacts, capacitors, cooling, and memory. Artifacting, dead memory, corrosion, and failed power components are realistic risks in hardware now more than two decades old.

- Confirm the exact model is an All-in-Wonder 9800 Pro, not a standard Radeon 9800 Pro.
- Prefer a tested board with photographs showing video output and, ideally, capture operation.
- Require the proprietary breakout cable; it is essential hardware, not a cosmetic extra.
- Check for the remote, USB receiver, auxiliary power lead, and driver media where applicable.
- Confirm NTSC/PAL/SECAM compatibility for your source.
- Inspect capacitors, fan, memory chips, AGP contacts, connectors, and corrosion.
- Use a return policy, especially for “untested” listings.
Do not rely on a fixed current price: the card is discontinued and used-market values vary with completeness and tested condition.

Modern alternative
For practical analog capture, a current USB device such as the Hauppauge USB-Live2 is usually the better choice. It offers composite and S-Video, stereo RCA audio, USB 2.0, and listed support for Windows 7, 8, 10, and 11. It avoids AGP hardware and XP driver maintenance. It does not reproduce the All-in-Wonder’s Radeon 9800 Pro graphics, tuner integration, or period authenticity.
A separate retro GPU plus capture device is another practical compromise: less elegant than an All-in-Wonder, but easier to replace and troubleshoot.
Final assessment
The ATI All-in-Wonder 9800 Pro is historically significant because one AGP board combined high-end 3D graphics, analog television, video capture, TV output, a remote, and media-center software. Preserve or buy it for a compatible vintage computer and the experience it represents. For modern Windows capture, HDMI workflows, digital television, or dependable VHS archiving, choose contemporary USB hardware instead.
